Wareham, Dean
That's The Price Of Loving Me
That's the Price of Loving Me marks Dean Wareham's return, reuniting with producer Kramer for the first time since Galaxie 500's This Is Our Music (1990). Recorded in six days in Los Angeles, the album features Wareham's reverb-drenched guitars, melancholic vocals, and contributions from Britta Phillips (bass, harmonies) and Gabe Noel (cello). Kramer's focus on spontaneity gives the work raw immediacy. Thematically, the album explores memory, nostalgia, and existential reflection. Highlights include the introspective single "We're Not Finished Yet," the emotionally complex "You Were the Ones I Had to Betray," and the title track, driven by conga rhythms and vintage Moog. Covers of Mayo Thompson's "Dear Betty Baby" and Nico's "Reich der Träume" reflect Wareham's affinity for homage, with the latter sung chillingly in German. This fourth solo album, his first with Carpark Records, blends dream-pop roots with mature introspection, balancing personal recollections with catchy hooks. Wareham's work, described as "haunted by the past yet pushing forward," captures the duality of his career with poignant depth and timeless resonance. Released on limited clear vinyl.
