First founded in 2017 as a solo project by Philip Paulus, Michael Zagorec is now part of The Velvet Swing's core line-up. From the very beginning, both of them shared a great love for psychedelic rock between its classic surf and garage precursors and their modern adaptations (Allah-Las, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Black Angels). A handful of chords, little progression and sparse instrumentalization create a timeless coolness that deliberately leaves out any frills. This attitude also pervades The Velvet Swing's recordings (3 EPs and 1 LP), which are full of psychedelic pearls in the classic three-minute format. Psychedelic rock as a disagreement with reality, where cool films not only want to be watched, but where people want to live in them. This extended player contains 5 songs, including the previously released singles 'Trouble And Mud' and 'Dream Of Abstract.' Mixed and mastered by Leonard Kaage (Error and The Underground Youth). Armadillo Cafe
Ghost World's fourth album, 'Armadillo Café,' is a slice of life depiction of a fictional café, its customers, and staff. The moods of the album change from one person to another, just like the people in the café. The lyrics of the songs consist of amusingly sad, relatable stories. Musically, 'Armadillo Café' is like something straight out of the 'Gilmore Girls' soundtrack at times, while at other times the whole thing is like the best effort of a dusty and forgotten '70s rock band. The full-length was recorded live on reel-to-reel tape under the direction of Aleksi Karppinen, and it was mixed by Graham Hunt, a well-known visionary musician. The whole thing was finished with mastering by Justin Perkins, whose hand can be heard on albums by The Replacements, among others. Ghost World promises that the album will tempt you to bang on air drums and give your friends high-fives. Edition on pink vinyl, limited to 200 copies.

Puñal is back with their debut LP seven years after their demo. Hailing from Mallorca, their punk sounds angry, dirty and very prickly. The 10 tracks of the LP are rooted in the classic Iberian punk sound while sounding current. Powered by the classic 1-2 drum beat, with a bass driven sound that is both sharp and dirgy at the same time, and sets the tone for their raging anti-social message. Nihilistic street thug lyrics which bring to mind Cicatriz or Eskorbuto but sonically are closer to UK82 and Latin American '80s aggro, with hints of So-Cal punk at times. The entire record is dedicated to Puñal's former drummer Martí (Orden Mundial, Trau and a million other bands), a stalwart of the Mallorca punk scene who tragically died in a motorbike accident in 2019.

Since its formation in 1977 Mark Perry's group Alternative TV has moved far away from its direct punk rock beginnings into all manner of other areas of music that have sometimes themselves drawn from improvisation, free jazz, industrial and electronic music. On the CD reissue of 2023's 'Direct Action', Alternative TV's first studio album since 'Opposing Forces' in 2015, we are presented with seven instrumental tracks which steadily rip apart all expectations. 'Direct Action' marries guttural electronics to sounds most artists would consign to the bin and through Perry's long perfected mastery of pulling together disparate strands to create something entirely alchemical and invigorating delivers a unique stamp to the ATV story. With 'Umwelt, Room,' An'archives releases the first vinyl LP by Japanese singer, songwriter and guitarist Kotonashiso. An elegant collection of seven slow-moving, free-ranging song forms, 'Umwelt, Room' is reflective, pensive, and yet has a great, expansive sense of movement, each song's parameters feeling almost infinitely flexible. Born in Tokyo in 1984, Kotonashiso began playing music in 2000. After taking a long break from making music between the years 2005 to 2016, he returned with renewed focus, and over the past eight years, he's toured Japan and Europe, performing in venues, street performances and open mic events. Currently, Kotonashiso plays either solo, on in three separate duos, with Sou Mori, and Hideya Kyooka, respectively. He's not released much music, as yet - a single, 'In The Cavern,' with Sou Mori, in 2021, and a soundtrack to Hiroki Nakajima's solo exhibition, 'Ray,' the following year. All of this gives 'Umwelt, Room' the feeling of a major statement, a debut shot across the void. The seven songs collected here were recorded in 2024, with a guiding principle, for Kotonashiso, being his desire to "[imagine] the time when people started recording blues and folk songs on analog records," creating a ghost-like presence in the listener's room. When talking about the songs on 'Umwelt, Room,' Kotonashiso focuses on a number of concepts, such as prayer, tragedy, 'the cycle of life,' and the disappear ance of the gulf between fantasy and reality. They're songs with deep, rich resonance, performed without guile. You might be able to hear, at times, the fragility of fellow Japanese singer-songwriter Hisato Higuchi, or the bluesy touch of Loren Connors in the guitar. However, Kotonashiso's aesthetic remit is wide, identifying with artists like Bill Callahan, Scout Niblett, Inukaze, and Tomoko Shimazaki, and sharing sympathies with "the psychedelic rock, avant-garde and ambient communities." Ultimately, though, the pellucid, dream-like songs of Kotonashiso, somewhere between folk, pop and blues, sit, disarmed and lovely, within their own universe. Debut album by tete De Chou, the trio of Mark Anderson, Kurumi Kido and Arlo Wynks. Some may know Anderson for his membership of Greymouth, Suisho No Fune etc. Kido and Wynks have more personal music histories, which informs the intimacy and gently exploratory nature of the eight pieces contained here. It's an album of snapshots, at once vivid in their performance, and obscure in their methodology. Organ drones tussle with field recordings; thin streams of noise rub up against clanking metallics; whispering, wistful reeds drift alongside warping strings and a tingling glockenspiel. There's a fair breadth to the instrumentation here: in addition to what's already mentioned, you can add a microphone, mini-amp, dulcimer, guitar, shehnai, violin, and 'two-stringed goatophone.' Placed together, the eight pieces here form an elliptical narrative that's far from easy to pin down, but infinitely pleasurable to listen to, a kind of home-built, humble electro-acoustic pastorale, and an impressive, unexpected first shot across the bow. The roots of African music are always open to new possibilities. This is revealed in the music of this unprecedented quartet. Alongside the Malian singer Rokia Traore, Mamah Diabate, Malian griot and djeli ngoni player, has been playing for several years with Stefano Pilia (Afterhours, Massimo Volume). Now, their path intertwines with the artistic and human partnership between Jabel Kanuteh, Gambian griot and kora virtuoso, and percussionist Marco Zanotti (Classical Afrobeat Orchestra, Cucoma Combo). The union of these two pairs develops unusual geographies and architectures, where dual African and Italian identities merge into one universal sensibility. The predominant Malian and Gambian modes chase each other, but all is fused into a broader rhythm factory or embellished by more abstract and liquid experimental digressions. The curiosity and pliability of the individual musicians search for a language that is both current and contemporary, always poised between ancient and modern, landscape and narrative, with jazz, rock and folk influences.

In 2024 he compiled 'Synthesizing The Silk Roads: Uzbek Disco, Tajik Folktronica, Uyghur Rock & Tatar Jazz,' released in collaboration with Ostinato Records. 'Digging Central Asia' is a mixtape that journeys through the psychedelic landscapes of the Silk Road, featuring recordings recorded between the 1970s through to the early 1990s.
