Shigeto
Cherry Blossom Baby
"Cherry Blossom Baby", Shigeto's first album since 2017, is a vibrant, collaborative work rooted in Detroit's musical traditions and the artist's Japanese-American heritage. Blending electronic, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop, Shigeto (Zach Saginaw) embraces his role as producer and composer, creating a rich, band-built sound that reflects themes of self-love, resilience, and renewal. Inspired by cherry blossoms in Hiroshima, a symbol of hope and growth, the album draws from Saginaw's cultural history and personal introspection during a period of self-discovery. It features collaborations with Detroit musicians, with a production style reminiscent of '70s and '80s jazz and psych records, emphasizing spacious, live-in-the-studio dynamics. Shigeto describes the album as a metaphor for regrowth and transformation, honoring the contributions of his collaborators while exploring identity, community, and creative evolution.
