Robbie The Werewolf
At The Waleback
The first ever vinyl reissue of this (infamous) private press classic, championed by lovers of the weird'n'wonderful, including Jello Biafra. Active in LA's post-beatnik, pre-hippie scene, Robbie The Werewolf -a red haired and bearded folksinger with a fetish for monsters- was a manic performer, acting out his songs as much as singing them. His set consisted of both originals and unique reworkings of folk standards, played on a beat-up twelve-string guitar. This resulted in truly bizarre songs s.a. 'Count Dracula' (check out those proto-psychedelic effects!) or the insane 'Rockin' Werewolf'. The LP was recorded during a heady night at The Waleback in LA, in 1964. Robbie would later become a founding member of cult band Clear Light, but that's another story. The LP includes an insert with detailed liner notes by Gray Newell (Shindig!, Ugly Things) and Alan Brackett (Peanut Butter Conspiracy) and is housed in an old-style tip-on sleeve.
