Ayany Jowi
The Raging Buffalo
A collection of rare recordings from one of Kenya's most famous players from Kenya's long tradition of fiddle music: Ayany Jowi (born Silvanus Ayany). Among the most classic of classic 1970s Kenyan music, Ayany Jowi is a household name to that generation of Kenyans. His frantic and aggressive take to fiddle music and the infectious percussion backup make his music an irresistible dancing experience. Ayany Jowi's music was the basis for benga, the well-known guitar-orientated music that became raged through Kenya throughout the '70s and '80s and continues to be popular today. He was called "Jowi" which means "wild Buffalo", because of his wild and uncontrollable nature and is likely the best known fiddle player of the classic era of Kenyan recorded music. This restored and remastered set of rare recordings are of some of Kenya's, and by extension Africa's, most important music on limited vinyl.
