CAN - IN CONCERT AT THE BBC 1973
Recorded specially for BBC radio In Concert during Can's 1973 UK tour, at The Paris Theatre, London on February 19th, the excellent-sounding recording presented here finds the five-piece band at the height of its live prowess, exploring themes and riffs whilst responding to each other in real time. The constantly evolving interplay between keyboards (Schmidt), guitar (Karoli) and vocals (Suzuki) is underpinned by the propulsive Czukay-Liebezeit rhythm section. The LP comes with comprehensive sleeve notes and full recording details.

ELVEN, THE - SOLSTICE
'Solstice' is the debut album by The Elven, a side project by members of Saturna and Earthless. What began at the end of 2020 as an irrational need to write music by Rod Tirado and James Vieco from Saturna soon took on a different identity when they brought their friends Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless) on lead guitar, Tabatha Puig on keyboards and Javi Gómez on drums. In just one month, they wrote the 8 songs that make up this debut album, titled 'Solstice', in which they blend psychedelia, progressive rock and classic heavy rock. For the graphic design, they once again enlisted an illustration by Jondix (Tool, Black Sabbath, High On Fire, Electric Wizard) and the design by Jalón de Aquiles for a vinyl edition that will be released via Spinda Records, in a new collaboration with Clostridium Records (DE) and Echodelick Records (US), who previously worked together on the debut album by Loma Baja. Limited to 300 copies on yellow marbled vinyl.

LICORICE ROOTS - LICORICE ROOT ORCHESTRA
"Have you ever had a great afternoon nap? The kind where you drift off, and on your way back to the afternoon, shards of the dream creep into your reality, bits of reality creep into your dream? As you wake up, you cant tell if the afternoon just got better because the best parts of the dream made it into the day, or because the nap refreshed you so completely that you now have a whole new perspective? That's what 'Licorice Roots Orchestra' by Raymond Listen sounds like. If you tilt your head at the appropriate angle, you will hear the best parts of Marc Bolan, Donovan, and the Beatles. Or maybe just a massively talented fan refracting those things, but when you're just waking up, who can tell? Raymond Listen, as the band was originally known, was formed in the early 1990s by singer/songwriter/pianist Edward Moyse, when he moved from rural Wellsboro in Northern Pennsylvania to Newark, Delaware and asked Dave Milsom to form a band with him. Milsom quickly took up the drums. Gradually, they added Dave Silverman (flute/glockenspiel/keyboards) and Kim Benner (finger cymbals). There was a fertile music scene percolating in Delaware, including peers like Jimmy Crouse, Zen Guerrilla, Smashing Orange, and Carnal Ghia, some of whom Raymond Listen shared stages with in 1991 and 1992. If you wanted to see a national touring act, you probably had to go to Philadelphia, but there was something going on. In 1992, Raymond Listen started recording at Noise New York, with studio owner and legendary scenester gadfly (Mark) Kramer. His business was in transition, and sessions quickly moved to his new facility Noise New Jersey. The recordings that became 'Licorice Root Orchestra' went so well that Kramer offered to release the results on Shimmy-Disc. A brief refresher course for those of you who didn't live through the indie-rock boom of the 1980s/1990s: Kramer is an artist/producer/collaborator/label head who worked with a dizzying array of artists, including Galaxie 500, The Butthole Surfers, Ween, Penn Gillette, John Zorn, Jad Fair, Daniel Johnston, Low, King Missile, Bongwater, Gwar, Boredoms, Jon Spencer, Yo La Tengo, and many, many more. Shimmy-Disc was his label, and it was known as much for the outsize and outsider personalities he collected (and personified) as for his deft and clever production style. The label was no commercial powerhouse, but it had an outsized cultural footprint. People paid attention to Kramer and Shimmy-Disc. In a world where punk and indie rock had recently upended the established commercial order, small labels were potential breeding grounds for the next thing, and Shimmy-Disc was high on the New York City list. Probably as a result of Shimmy-Disc's reach, the album was widely reviewed, and reviews were ecstatic. Melody Maker called it "Seismic" and hailed it as "a delicate work of weird genius." NME called it "magical and childlike." CMJ said "infused with the essence of 'Pet Sounds' without sounding derivative." Sassy magazine issued them their coveted "Cute Band Alert." None of this seems to have contributed to much in the way of airplay or sales. A short tour in Spring, 1994 took them to Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Louisville, and two different cities in West Virginia. They played some regional shows with Dogbowl, a few scattered shows in New York City, and gradually changed their name from Raymond Listen to Licorice Roots Orchestra. A second album was recorded at Noise New Jersey, but disagreements between Moyse and Kramer over mixing and production resulted in the band leaving the label, and Moyse taking over the producer role for their subsequent recordings. They made and released 6 more excellent, lower-profile albums, the most recent one of which came out in 2009. How could such a beautiful, unique piece of work come out in the midst of a creative boom time, and go mostly unheard? My theory is: It was too nice. People were looking for snark, angst, neurosis, and despair in their indie rock music in 1993, and Raymond Listen offered peace and serenity. Grace doesn't win a battle with a jackhammer. Now Riding Easy comes to the rescue. If you ever loved the dreamier side of the Flaming Lips, the idea of Elephant 6, or a great afternoon nap, here's your chance. This is why the world needs record collectors. 'Licorice Roots Orchestra' is, on its own terms, a masterpiece. Good night." ~Geoffrey Weiss, Los Angeles, 2024.

MOTORPSYCHO - YAY! (CLEAR/SMOKE)
After a series of epic, sprawling and headphones-friendly albums, Motorpsycho is back with a short, reasonably pop-formatted and intimate album of mainly acoustically based songs. For once playing the game instead of trying to reinvent it, this 10-song album of tunes is clearly a reaction in some way to too much architecture and too many grand visions, and dials the music down to more comprehensive and digestible sizes than have been the band's métier lately. Motorpsycho have always been about the balance between hard and soft, electric and acoustic, big and small, light and shade - and now the time was right for a lighter touch to balance the scales. Yang to the Yin of earlier, more epic works ('N.O.X.,' 'The Crucible,' and 'Chariot Of The Sun'), this is also an album that is relatively easy on the ears, and that actually works really well with a cup of tea at noon. 'Yay!' was produced by Reine Fiske and Lars Fredrik Swahn (Dungen, Melody's Echo Chamber, The Amazing et al), and their production work brings a sweet Swedish psych edge to the album, giving it a lysergic tinge and charging what could easily have been a bit too 'backporchy' with an electric vibe that lifts it out of the often staid singer/songwriter genre, but still keeping the intimacy intact.
While as ever clearly drawing on inspiration from late '60s/early '70s heroes, 'Yay!' is as indebted to earlier iterations of Motorpsycho as anything else, and will be recognizable to fans of vintage Motorpsychodelia as well as a breath of fresh air to newer Psychonauts that only ever heard the heavy progressive side of the band. Reactions ranging from 'WTF?' to 'Finally!' are expected. Use your ears! Keeping things unpredictable and weird since 1989, there is only one Motorpsycho. Edition on milky clear with red smoke vinyl.

MOUNDRAG - HIC SUNT MOUNDRAGES
Moundrag have no guitar and they play hard prog heavy psych. A real storm arriving from Brittany in France. Organ Fury and Dr. Mad Drum are two brothers who love that mix of prog rock and psychedelia that was born in England in the '60s. VARIOUS - TIMES OF STRANGE DAYS PAST
Top Sounds' first release of 2025 is something of an almost extinct beast these days, a compilation of late 1960s British psychedelia of which the majority has never previously been released. Spanning 1967 to 1970 the LP features fourteen tracks and opens with a superb version of 'Astronomy Domine' by Graphite, the first of two covers of Pink Floyd numbers on the record. Both sides of the Graded Grains 'Animal Magic'/'Lucifer Sam' acetate are finally released in excellent sound quality thanks to the sourcing of another copy, and two sterling psychedelic rock performances by White Unicorn were only previously pressed onto a very small run of white label 45s in 1969. A couple of the legendary attractions on the London underground scene of 1967 and '68 who never had any music issued at the time - the Crystal Ship and the Philosopher's Stone - have their distinctive brands of hardcore psych on vinyl for the first time whilst underground heroes Tomorrow take pride of place with a raucous pre single version of their anthemic 'My White Bicycle.' With more first division selections from Sound Of London, The Pheonix, Them and an unknown aggregation's amazing 'Strange Day,' 'Times Of Strange Days Past' is sure to satisfy the appetite of enthusiasts of obscure UK psychedelia. The LP features a 16 page booklet. Limited edition of 500 copies.

MOSLEY, BOB - BOB MOSLEY
Bob Mosley, reworked, remastered and re-released - at last!
The list of artists who cite 1960s rock legends Moby Grape as an influence is unsurprisingly diverse. After all, the Northern California combo consisted of five gifted songwriters whose unique creative sparks came together as a cohesive whole. Although shady business dealings ultimately undid Moby Grape by 1971, each of the band's members might have gone on to long careers, if not outright stardom. That's certainly what should've happened for bassist and singer Bob Mosley, who released his eponymously titled Warner Bros. solo debut in '72.
The eleven tracks recorded for the album sure packed a wallop. Mosley had given the Grape its rugged, bluesy aspect, and his own LP went that way, full-throttle. Unfussy songcraft with forthright lyrics suited Mosley's deep, powerful voice_through straight-up rockers like 'The Joker,' the propulsive pop of 'Let The Music Play' and 'Squaw Valley Nils,' and the groovy-greasy, hornswaggled soul of 'Gypsy Wedding.' The sessions captured the bouncy R&B of 'Nothing To Do' and
the plaintive yearning of country-tinged 'Thanks.' With 'Hand In Hand,' Mosley brought a tough edge to an unabashed love song, while 'So Many Troubles,' the moving closer, was swathed in haunting keyboards and woe-begotten guitar. Muscular musicianship came from a core group around Mosley on bass: drummer Alllen Wehr and guitarists Woodie Berry and Frank Smith. The sessions also boasted the Memphis Horns and pedal
steel by Ed Black. So how could such strong tunes and stellar playing result in a record that didn't soar to the top of the charts, satisfying Moby Grape fans and new listeners alike? To answer that question, let's go back to the list of artists mad for Moby Grape. Along with Robert Plant, Little Steven, Beck, Chrissie Hynde, Cat Power and Jeff Tweedy is singer/songwriter/producer John DeNicola. "As a big Moby Grape fan, I anticipated any solo records from the band members, and I got this LP as soon as it came out," DeNicola recalls. "I listened to it recently and thought the low end of the bass and drums were thin, making the overall sound of the songs less than ideal. I thought, "If I could only get my hands on the original multitrack, I would love the opportunity to remix
it... better balance the rhythm section with the rest of the music to make it sound as it should. It's there, it just needs a boost." If anyone knows how things should sound, it's John DeNicola. In the 1980s, he wrote the music for both monster hits from the 'Dirty Dancing' soundtrack, '(I Had The) Time Of My Life' and 'Hungry Eyes,' earning an Academy Award and a Grammy nomination. In the '90s, his ears for talent led him
to discover a baby band called Kara's Flowers, who later changed their name to Maroon 5. Via his boutique label, Omad, he not only releases his own solo work, he produces a spectrum of artists in different genres - the only connective tissue being that DeNicola digs them. What's more, though an
accomplished multi-instrumentalist himself, DeNicola had been a bass player in his early bands, so he had a particular interest in doing right by Mosley. "Bob was one of the most influential rock bassists of all time, and for a bass player's record to be light on bass is not optimal," he deadpans. Clearly, DeNicola was the ideal person to help Bob Mosley fulfill its sonic promise. Trouble was, the original multitrack - which would have let him literally start from scratch with a full-on remix - was missing. DeNicola didn't let that stop him, however, obtaining instead the master two track DDP file from Warner Bros. "With that, I was able to 'de-mix' the record, separate out the drums, bass and vocals using a combination of AI programs, and then get the bass and drums up in volume. Not a
complete remix, no, but I was able to balance the rhythm section with the music, resulting in a fuller sound." Now, Omad is releasing Bob Mosley on CD (consult any hipster - the format is coming back!) and potentially on vinyl as well. "I'm really happy with it," DeNicola says. "I think it sounds the way it was originally intended to, and it feels great to give people an opportunity to hear Bob's masterpiece the way it never really was before." Perhaps the best news? All profits from the record will go to Mosley, a former Marine who has had his share of struggles off and on during his 81 years on the planet. "Bob's actually doing well these days, living in California with his lovely wife Connie," DeNicola says. With his first solo album getting a whole new life, Bob Mosley can finally encourage listeners to do what he asks on 'The Joker,' the
opening track: "Understand and believe my worth, hear what I have to say."

VENEMAN EN DE GROOT - ZONDER RAFELS GEEN ZIEL
"Neo-smartlappen" from The City of Light: Nick Cave meets Corry Konings! Woody Veneman and Truus de Groot are both bona fide legends of the Eindhoven music scene. Eindhoven, also called Rockcity is known to be a bed of new and challenging sounds dating back to the earliest of electronica murmurings at Philips Electronics NatLab. Both Woody and Truus have been active in a broad variety of genres, never afraid to tread into the unknown. Using their vast backgrounds of experimental and traditional sounds, they come together tapping into the Dutch phenomena of "smartlappen." Comes in luxurious UV gloss cover with silver foil finish and on 140gr purple vinyl.
Electronica pioneer Truus de Groot's career started at the beginning of the punk rock craze in 1976 in The Netherlands. She started out as a vocalist and lyric writer as a member of Nasmak. Experimental electronic instruments became part of her passion. She established cult favorite Plus Instruments in 1978 which is an ongoing project to present day. Eventually it led her to design her own instruments. Her path has been a long and winding road around the world, collaborating with all types of people in a variety of genres and cultures. In 2015 she established Blue Beast with her Brazilian collaborator Miguel Barella. During the pandemic she also started an ongoing collaboration with Cosmo Vitelli. She is always looking for a new challenge, as she continues to seek exciting ways to express herself creatively through music, words, photography and film. Eindhoven-based Woody Veneman is a composer and singer-songwriter, creator of analog techno, visual designer and gallery owner. INTERCOMMUNAL FREE DANCE MUSIC ORCHESTRA - APRES LA MAREE NOIRE
'VERS UNE MUSIQUE BRETONNE NOUVELLE' - If the jazz of François Tusques is "free", his spirit is even more so: having recorded 'Free Jazz' with other like-minded Frenchmen (Michel Portal, François Jeanneau, Bernard Vitet, Beb Guérin and Charles Saudrais), the pianist had covered a lot of ground, with Barney Wilen ('Le Nouveau Jazz') or even solo ('Piano Dazibao' and 'Dazibao N°2'), so as not to repeat himself... In 1971 he founded the Inter Communal Free Dance Music Orchestra which, as the notes the this album stated, "is an interpretation of a music which synthesizes the different communities living and working in France." In 1976, on the first album ('L'Inter Communal') we can already hear Tusques playing without borders in the company of Carlos Andreu (vocals), Michel Marre (trumpet and saxophone), Jo Maka (saxophone) and Ramadolf (trombone). It is a meeting between jazz and music from Catalonia, Occitanie and Africa. So far so good, but what about Brittany, that, Tusques knows "by heart"? Having lived for a long time in Nantes, he would expand his 'brittanitude' on the canal linking the city to Brest by playing with, for example the Diaouled-Ar-Menez. With these "devils from the mountain" who, under the baton of Yann Goasdoué, worked throughout the 1970s on the renewal of music from Brittany, Tusques met, notably, Tanguy Ledoré and invited him one day, with trois bombards and some bagpipes (Jean-Louis Le Vallegant, Gaby Kerdoncuff and Philippe Lestrat), to join the ranks of the Intercommunal. And so they set of towards a new music from Brittany, as the title states; 'Vers Une Musique Bretonne Nouvelle'! With percussion from Samuel Ateba and Kilikus, the association launches the 'bombardier': the repetitions and dissonance of the different members all serve a common cause however: the dance, which is always the reason for the party. This sets a whole universe spinning, which can bring to mind Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath ('La Rencontre') when not taking on board waltz, swing, blues and gavotta or even revealing mysteries like those of Gurdjieff ('Les Racines De La Montagne' or 'Le Cheval' sung by Andreu). Only one thing to say to this Brotherhood Of Breizh: Mersi!

INTERCOMMUNAL FREE DANCE MUSIC ORCHESTRA - VOL. 4 - JO MAKA
Music-lovers of all lands, rejoice! Here you have the re-release of the fourth album of the Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra recorded with the Guinean saxophonist Jo Maka. The title says it all: 'Vol. 4 - Jo Maka.' But before that, a bit of history... The Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra was created in 1971 by an "old hand" of French free jazz,
François Tusques. 'Free Jazz' was also the name of the recording made by the pianist and other like-minded Frenchmen (Michel Portal, François Jeanneau, Bernard Vitet, Beb Guérin and Charles Saudrais) in 1965. But, six years later Tusques had had his fill of free jazz. So he then founded the Inter Communal, an association a name under which the different communities could become closer and compose, simply. In 1976, on the first album 'L'Inter Communal,' we can already hear Tusques playing without borders in the company of Carlos Andreu, Ramadolf, Michel Marre and Jo Maka (as a conclusion to this 'Vol. 4,' we can hear them in 1977 at the Moulin de Prades Le Lez). Over the next decade, the, association kept going with concerts at the Dunois theatre, in 1980 and 1981, it welcomed old hands and new recruits (Bernard Vitet, Jean-Jacques Avenel, Jacques Thollot, Sylvain Kassap...). If 'Vol. 4 - Jo Maka' is an homage to the Guinean saxophonist, who passed away a few months before the release of this selection of concert recordings, it also displays a proud collective inspiration! One foot in the blues, and ears open to everything else, Tusques begins with a lament that the Company rapidly transforms into a joyful dance ('Vive La Commune'), weaves a full-blown party piece ('Poses Ton Fardeau Et Remets La Machine En Route,' '7 Rue Des Prêcheurs,' 'Mazir') or gets fabulous with Mingus ('Fable Of Faubus'). And there you have it, with so many revolutions François Tusques is almost back to free jazz. So, your turn with the turntable!
