Rubinho e Mauro Assumpçao's 'Perfeitamente, Justamente Quando Cheguei' has to be up there as one of the finest Brazilian-psych-folk-MPB records. Unfortunately, it's very hard to find in the wild; even on digging trips to Brazil, an original copy rarely shows up, and when it does, it comes with a hefty price tag. This highly sought-after rarity was released on the Brazilian label Tapecar Records in 1972 and is the one and only album by the sensational pairing of Rubinho and Mauro Assumpçao. Effortlessly blending folk, MPB, funky-psych, rock, and relaxed, swaggering samba, this record ought to be heralded as a true Brazilian classic. However, maybe due to its scarcity and the previous reissue predominantly being only available to the Brazilian market, it has not had a chance to fully shine and find the wider audience it deserves. Through Mr Bongo's reissue they hope to put things right. Fans of records by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges are sure to enjoy the same magic and allure in 'Perfeitamente, Justamente Quando Cheguei.' In addition to being the album's songwriters, Mauro Assumpçao took on the role of producer and Rubinho was co-producer as well as playing piano, organ, acoustic guitar and performing vocals. The record features the drummer Gegê who worked with Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Nana Caymmi, Dom Um Romao and more. It also features guitarist Rick Ferreira, who played with Erasmo Carlos, Gal Costa and other greats. Rounding off the players on the album are Darcy Da Cruz and Formiga who have graced many a fine recording on horns. Black Snake Moan is a blues-psych one-man band. The
man behind the project, Marco Contestabile, is a singer, guitarist and composer, a real artist. On 'Phantasmagoria' (no reference to the Damned 1986 album by the same title) the snake moves "thru the rhythm of darkened times" to quote Roky Erickson, almost dancing to a sensuous, hypnotic melody. Many episodes along this sullen, imaginary trip are reminiscent of the early Doors Indian raga guitars, the 13th Floor Elevators' reverberations and the white light echoes of The Velvet Underground. From vintage sixties sounds of the likes of the
Electric Prunes and Ultimate Spinach via a certain '80s psych-wave brought by early Southern Death Cult, Opal or even Sisters Of Mercy, Black Snake Moan crawls onto the neo-psychedelic movement build around BJM and The Black Angels. Eventually, 'Phantasmagoria' finds its way to look into the "future" as well, exploring space-age sounds with its one-man-band formula.

From the moment they emerged in the early days of the '80s Tokyo underground, High Rise set themselves apart as radical
outliers, shattering the limits of rock and psychedelic music with a ferocity unmatched even in that heady era. The group's core duo of Asahito Nanjo on bass/vocals and Munehiro Narita on guitar had an explosive chemistry; they mutated, distorted,
amplified the raw velocity, heaviness, and electricity of late '60s/early '70s rock into an entirely new, monstrous form. Running in similar circles, their approach paralleled that of Les Rallizes Dénudés, but with a more garage/proto-punk attack and the blistering intensity of a full-on amphetamine rush. While Mizutani's guitar is what took Rallizes's to another level, the same can be said for Narita's guitar work in High Rise - rightfully placing him in the pantheon of psychedelic guitarists and for some to call him "the undisputed king of the motorcycle fuzz guitar." The band inspired the launch of the legendary P.S.F. label, giving it its first two releases which along with its third release, the debut of Keiji Haino's Fushitsusha, signaled a new era in the world of Japanese underground music. High Rise's second album, 1986's 'II,' was a triumph and fully lived up to the group's original 'Psychedelic Speed Freaks' moniker, instantly raising the stakes for any band to follow. It carved out a new stream of rock music, rooted in an encyclopedic knowledge of the music's history and an almost metaphysical understanding of its raw elements and spirit. High Rise's third album, 1992's 'Dispersion,' kept the group's in-the-red intensity while pushing into new directions. Less grounded in speed, Nanjo along with drummer Dr. Euro build powerful, dynamic riffs that swing with crushing levels of
heaviness. Slower pieces rife with blues infused tension appear alongside dissonant no wave inflected passages and rumbling
biker rave-ups. All of which provide Narita with the room to create one of rock guitar's most compelling high wire spectacles. Throughout the album he creates dizzying torrents of notes with a precision, control and endless inventiveness that crackles with chaotic energy. As P.S.F.'s own description proclaimed at the time "Munehiro Narita's guitar explodes!" this is "Killer-Fuzz-Wah-Wah psychedelic heaven!"

The respected Japanese jazz drummer Akira Ishikawa was not messing around when he recorded the 'Uganda (Dawn Of Rock)' album with his band the Count Buffaloes. For this offering, originally released in 1972 on Toshiba Records, Akira Ishikawa takes us on a deep tripped-out journey. 'Uganda (Dawn Of Rock)' is a fusion of progressive and psych rock with African percussion workouts, dergy-wah wah blues-funk, and jazzy sensibilities; with different genres morphing and uniting as they progress. A long way from his funk and Afrobeat album 'Back To Rhythm,' reissued on Mr Bongo in 2019, this record has a darker, deeper, abstract and experimental stoned tone with the listener being pulled into its vortex for the ride. This record doesn't pull any punches. For this album, Akira is joined by Hideaki Chihara on bass, guitarist Kimio Mizutani, sounding at times like an early '70s Peter Green, percussionist Larry Sunaga and composer Takeru Muraoka. The album has become highly sought-after amongst psych, prog and acid rock collectors and due to the rare nature of original copies they come at a hefty price tag. Psych 9 hails from Rhode Island USA. The band rips through psychedelic, garage band, hardrock, progressive, jam band rock styles and much more. Their first album, 'The Trip Goes On', showcases the talents of multiple singers and songwriters, resulting in an eclectic mix that is never predictable or boring. The band is composed of Brian "BT" Thomas and John Devault on guitars and vocals, Frank Villani and Mike Meehan on drums and vocals, and Gary Klimala on bass. Psych 9 was the outgrowth of a project by the neo-psychedelic band Plan 9. Plan 9 was formed in 1979 by a beach community of musicians looking to create something different and not having a scene to do it in. Many albums and tours later Plan 9 was inducted into the RI Music Hall of Fame in 2017. After that honor a new album was planned, but band leader Eric Stumpo tragically passed away in 2019. The remaining members decided to continue the music and vibe as Psych 9 with the album 'The Trip Goes On'.

The Cyrkle produced one album's worth of solid garage rock, and it certainly proves that the band was an enthusiastic bunch of musicians. Much closer to late '60s garage (proto) punk than psychedelia, the album was released in 1969. They were best known for their 1966 song 'Red Rubber Ball' (written by Paul Simon) which went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band was discovered and managed by Brian Epstein and given the unique spelling of their name by John Lennon. The group was formed by guitarists and lead singers Don Dannemann and Tom Dawes (bass guitar), who met while studying at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. The other members were Earl Pickens on keyboards and Marty Fried on drums. Includes 8 bonus tracks.

This gatefold edition on 12" will provide extensive and updated liner notes besides the awesome research done by worldwide garage expert #1, Mike Markesich who made it all possible since day one, interviewing the members of these extremely rare but sough-after tracks by garage, folk and psych collectors worldwide. The master tapes assembled by garage collector Mark Taylor have been originally restored at Erik Lindgren's Sounds Interesting studios and now they've taken to Forward Analog Studios to achieve thee best sounding source available so far. While in the past decade the limited pressing of 500 copies have been authorized by the band, a few years ago a lame bootleg of this collection appeared on the US market, making its price circulating at 100$ and more. Since then at Misty Lane they've tried a few upgrades but nothing sounded as good as today's result. When a team of experts gather in a unique studio like the Forward studios you can bet it will bring unexpected, awesome result. This is what happened! And so there is a new release on the way, on 12" this time (a few customers during the past 25 years have criticized the original 10" format, so there you go...). Misty Lane has also given a slightly different graphic twist: a lighter design but at the same time richer in information. A limited edition of only 150 numbered copies will be pressed, so be sure to pre-order yours now. Distributors will probably ignore this release so it'd be useless to press more. Also useless to say the price of this release is going to stop the rush that has been on Discogs in recent years. After many shows in Switzerland they decided to go to LUZERN in the SCHWEINESOUND STUDIOS to record a full lenght and spend 3 DAYS RECORDING it and was 1ST LP RELEASED on Bernese Record Label and Shop 'RECORD JUNKIE RECORDS' in a edition of 666 records, they were sold out pretty fast and never reprinted again, Record Junkie stopped releasing records after a couple years of existence , Beat-Man was working at Record Junkie in the Shop so when it collapsed he formed Voodoo Rhythm records and after 24 jears of silence and hours in the cellar digging throu original 2" master tapes and transform it into 2013 sound format that TRASH BILLY DESASTER is available and reborn again, the LYRICS are as STUPID as its get and on the instruments they have a standard of some RETARDED CAVEMEN, and that makes that album interesting. The Monsters formed in 1986 in Bern, Switzerland as an alternative to the popular music of the time (i.e. disco, pop, Top 40 rock). Mixing rockabilly with punk rock and garage, their brand of teenage primitive rock'n'roll chainsaw massacre garage trash has kept them as an in demand punk rock band touring the world playing festivals and large halls as far east as Japan, south as Brazil, north as Scandinavia, and west as New York City. And then 2020 hit, YAHOO!!! The world went into a complete lockdown and everyone's plans changed! With no touring in the near future, the time was now to write a new album so the band dedicated two weeks to going to their practice space to write new music and another two weeks at Bern's Shirt Off Studio to record. Voila! Here you have Rosemary's Baby in your hand: 13 raw, loud, and splatter sounding tracks recorded live on the fly with no overdubs, vocals only. Lyrically, the album is a complete disaster with 120 words comprising the whole thing and hell, the words on this LP sometimes don't make any sense! It's actually complete rubbish with how they sing but we love it!

'Summer Forever And Ever' succeeds 'Blue Gene Stew,' 2019's debut by the Wolfmanhattan Project, a collective unit co-starring three musicians familiar to In The Red listeners: singer-guitarist Mick Collins, front man of the seminal Detroit-bred garage units the Dirtbombs and the Gories, singer-guitarist Kid Congo Powers who played in such legendary bands as the Gun Club, the Cramps, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and drummer-vocalist Bob Bert, whose skin work has distinguished albums by Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunch's Retrovirus, and Jon Spencer and the HITmakers. The group was founded as a studio project by three musicians who are kept busy by their primary bands. 'Blue Gene Stew' was written and recorded quickly. Powers says, "I think that the new record was much more a group effort. I think there's more of a group kind of sound, as eclectic as it is. I feel like we all played together, as opposed to playing on each other's songs." Bert notes that the band's music is grounded in spontaneity: "Me and Mick went in and had a couple of rehearsals, and I would come up with a beat, he would come up with a riff. I still have a cassette Walkman, believe it or not, and we'd put it down on that. It wasn't even a full song. We'd just put down a bunch of ideas. When it came to recording we'd lay down the basic tracks and work out different things, and a lot of it was made up on the spot. It really is a great collaboration." Recorded and engineered by Mark C. of Live Skull at his studio, 'Summer Forever And Ever' finds Powers playing piano and the Kaoss touch-pad effects unit and Collins playing synthesizer, in addition to their usual instruments. The album reflects the same eclectic mix of musical styles heard on the debut. References and sometimes even direct quotes from sources as diverse as the Andrea True Connection, Captain Beefheart, the Count Five, and Eurythmics leap out of the speakers.

The performance was recorded over a series of three dates opening for England's Enter Shakiri, in front of a hostile audience. The set is a nonstop psychedelic metal fest that is not to be missed. Formed in the northeast town of South Shields in 1977, punk/oi! band Angelic Upstarts recorded two studio albums for Warner Brothers and two for EMI's Zonophone subsidiary before being dropped by the latter. Work was begun on an abortive fifth studio album that forms the bulk of the brilliant Lost And Found, with superior versions of Last Tango In Moscow material featuring the classic Upstarts line up of Mensi/Mond/Glyn/Decca. Live tracks from the Main Event gig at the London Astoria have Mensi/Hayes/Ronnie Rocker/Max Splodge. This is required listening for all Upstarts fans. Thoroughly excellent!

CARPETTES - FIGHT AMONGST YOURSELVES
Neo-Mod act the Carpettes began as a Stones-influenced school band, formed in the small northeast Norman town of Houghton-le-Spring in the mid-1970s, the trio of frontman Neil Thompson, bassist George Maddison, and drummer Kevin Heard shifting to punk before signing to Small Wonder as a Mod revival act. By the time they joined the Beggar's Banquet roster in 1978, Heard was replaced by Tim Wilder (with Simon Smith of the Merton Parkas briefly in the fold). Sophomore album 'Fight Amongst Yourselves' is arguably their best, the appealing material ranging from the socially-relevant power-pop of the title track and the pop-punk of 'The Reason I'm Lonely' to the reggae cadences of 'The Last Lone Ranger'.

'Oddities, Abnormalities And Curiosities' is an absolutely fresh and honest album and is often overlooked. There's still the old playfulness and anarchic aggressiveness ('Brick,' 'Career Day'), paired with an ironic wink, and the rough edges that will probably protect them from commercial frenzy this time too. If Keith then goes back to work frustrated, it's not at least your fault, tight-fisted ignorants. Full of blazing guitars, thundering drums and ear-piercing screams, and while it isn't entirely slam dance worthy like their earlier albums, any real fan should appreciate this as a true punk rock piece of art. Circle Jerks fans, who remembered the band for their short street anthems and sarcastic political songs of the early '80s seem to forget that in 1995 when this record was recorded, Reagan wasn't in the white house. Sure, things weren't perfect politically, but the Circle Jerks weren't known for their political dissent. They sang about everything. They were the party band, and on 'Oddities' it shows.

Bristol new wave quartet The Numbers formed in 1977 with vocalist/rhythm guitarist Nick McAuley, bassist Wayne Kingston, drummer Lee Gardener and future Massive Attack guitarist Angelo Bruschini. Heavily influenced by Bowie's 'Berlin' trilogy, early recordings surfaced on compilations issued by the local Heartbeat label in 1979, namely the power-punk-pop 'Alternative Suicide' on 4 Alternatives and the funked-up 'Cross Slide' on Avon Calling. This excellent compilation pairs those songs with unreleased demos, giving us the complete picture of a band far ahead of their time, with Bruschini already on dazzling form.

SCREAMIN' MEE-MEES - LIVE FROM THE BASEMENT 1975-1997
In the mid-'70s, when the major labels were issuing lotsa crap music and lotsa of "dinosaur rock" bands were around to destroy our turntables, in the midwest a couple of guys were doing some interesting "weirdo" stuff...! These guys recording everything in their loosy basement, were called Screamin' Mee-Mees, and now they're a part of the American so-called "proto-punk" history...! Re-considered from the "punk" archivist in the late '80s/early '90s, the Mee-Mees issued a wonderful 7" EP in 1976 on their own little label Dog Face. That record (included here) can be easily considered one of the best examples of what was intended for "punk music" from the enthusiastic generation described in the 'From The Velvets To The Voidoids' book. The Mee-Mees, originally from St. Louis (Missouri), played a personal mixture of '60s garage and '70s punk with psych and Velvet-influenced touches, with a low-fi feel. Simply amazing! This record reissues on one album their rare and classic 'Live From The Basement' EP, plus some unreleased '70s stuff and rare songs issued on rare and bad-distributed singles. You cannot miss it!

UPSIDE - UPSIDE
Upside is a legendary hardcore/punk band from Sassuolo near Modena (Italy) that started in the early '80s and is still performing to this day. They were part of the scene that gave us bands like Stigmathe, Raw Power, Nabat, Dioxina, Cani, No Jap, Hydra, Stalag 17, RAF Punk... In 1983 they debuted on vinyl with 'Nati Per Soffrire' 7" but even before that they recorded the first demo tape with great songs that never came out elsewhere. Political punk verging on hardcore tinged with dark overtones, both musically and lyrically. Very critical, almost apocalyptic lyrics about society. Their music influences seem to merge early UK 82 stuff with Italian HC/punk of the time as well as '80s Finnish HC, although not as fast as most of their Scandinavian counterparts. If you liked the Link Lärm LP on No Plan records, this could be something for you as well. This LP gathers 10 songs (plus a hidden track) from the demo, remastered, for the first time on vinyl. Comes with a foldout 12" insert with band photos, lyrics, flyers and band's history in a deluxe 350 gr laminated cover printed on both sides.

First record for this new Italian label, manufactured and distributed by HATE Records in Rome. It's a collection of 1989 UNRELEASED recordings by one of the best and most famous Italian bands ever, on the scene since 1979. Their classic early-80s Joy Division-inspired "new wave" album "Siberia" is still one of the most influential Italian early eighties works.
Here are all the unreleased sessions recorded at the end of that decade for the mini LP "Gennaio" (self produced at the time and one of the most beautiful and collectable in their catalog) and just before the band signed for a major label (Ricordi) to release the fabulous "In Perfetta Solitudine" album. You will find a collection of really beautiful waveish pop songs with a unique Italian touch (sometimes reflecting Italian 60s and 70s songwriters inspirations) and a true "punk" attitude. Perfect songs with an amazing, very personal crude vocal style by the never-too-much celebrated Federico Fiumani.
Double LP limited edition of 600 copies with an amazing gatefold color sleeve (with unreleased pictures from the time). The package includes also the CD-version for non-vinyl fans.

In 1980, the English rock band The Only Ones released their third and final studio album 'Baby's Got A Gun.' While they produced the previous two albums, for 'Baby's Got A Gun' they joined forces with the acclaimed producer Colin Thurston, who is best known for his work with Duran Duran, Talk Talk, and the Human League among others. The album features guest performances by lead vocalist of Penetration, Pauline Murray, on the tracks 'Fools' and 'Me And My Shadow.' 'Fools' is the only time that the band had released a cover version, which is originally a song by American country musician Johnny Duncan. Two years after the album release, The Only Ones officially disbanded. 'Baby's Got A Gun' features remastered audio and is available as a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on silver and black marbled vinyl.

During his long and illustrious career the French composer and musique concrète pioneer Pierre Henry created a lare amount of incidental music to accompany literary texts, both on record and for the stage, from Jules Verne to Victor Hugo, from Lautréamont to Antonin Artaud. This incredibly rare LP from 1959 is a radio play about the life of French pilot and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, based on the 1956 book by Luc Estang on the subject. The interpreters are a small theater troupe including French actor Paul Meurisse (1912-1979), famous for popular films and as a member of national theater company La Comédie Française. Underlying key scenes, Pierre Henry's contribution to the play consists of electronic and musique concrète sounds, adding a contemporary dimension to the text. A beautiful piece from one of the mid-20th century's truly brilliant sonic explorers.

Beat poetry influenced free form jazz collective, formed in Montréal in 1967, L'Infonie existed officially until 1974. Lead by composer Walter Boudreau (aka retlaW uaerduoB) and poet, singer, trumpeter Raôul Duguay (aka luôaR yauguD) this very loose collective featured up to 33 artists from various backgrounds ranging from free jazz, classical, contemporary, rock, visual arts and poetry. Originally released in 1969 on Polydor.

Originally released in 1987, 'Ars srA' was the product of a long distance collaboration (involving the exchange of tapes) between the Milan based duo, the legendary American guitarist Henry Kaiser and Canadian maverick sound artist John Oswald. The music sounds like a perfect blend of '70s art-rock elements '80s electronics. The LP comes with a free CD-copy for the entire album plus bonus material!

Bill Orcutt is an American guitarist and composer whose work combines elements of blues, punk and free improvisation. In contrast to his previous reanimation of yesterday's hit parade, 'How To Rescue Things' takes as its foundation the oily underbelly of the American songbook, the relentless gears that churn melody into newly consumable and marketable forms-simultaneously ersatz, soothing and funereal. It's easy to use saccharine, easy-listening settings to deconstruct the romanticism of the past, but 'How To Rescue Things' is not an ironic record. True to its title, the transparently corny strings serve not as a meditation on cultural vacuity, but as an attempt to rehabilitate the cliche's of the past, 'rescuing' them as improvisational grist for new melodic content.

SEVERED HEADS - EAR BITTEN (2LP)
A double LP reissue of some of the band's earliest material. As originary Aussie industrial legends - although founder Tom Ellard would balk at being branded as such - Severed Heads shaped the continental subcultural sound with their kitchen electronics, chaotic tape loops, and quietly infectious nursery-rhyme-esque melodies. In 1979 Ellard, Richard Fielding, and Andrew Wright abandoned the moniker Mr. and Mrs. No Smoking Sign and adopted the edgier name Severed Heads "to pretend to be an industrial band such as Surgical Penis Klinik and Throbbing Gristle." 'Ear Bitten' was released in 1980; original copies now fetch obscene sums, in part due to most of Severed Heads' copies perishing in a fire at Richard's home. The band's next endeavor was a cassette titled 'Side 2,' a collection of free-form experiments fashioned as 'Ear Bitten's second side. For this reissue, Dark Entries has collected both 'Ear Bitten' and 'Side 2' on the first disc, presenting the album in its full form. Disc two includes the original first version of 'Ear Bitten,' which was only unreleased because it was recorded in a format not suitable for pressing. The album comes in a gatefold sleeve designed by Eloise Leigh and includes photos, liner notes, and reproductions of the original xerox inserts from the 1980 issue. 'Ear Bitten' delivers 22 tracks of pain you can dance to!

'Mass Hysterism In Another Situation' captures Masayuki Takayanagi's New Direction Unit in its final incarnation, at an apex in its development; it also finds Takayanagi, one of Japan's great iconoclastic artists, at a moment of crucial artistic transformation. Recorded in August 1983 as part of his 'Another Situation' concert series, the album features one of the last performances of Takayanagi's revolutionary and perhaps most famously violent piece, 'Mass Projection.' By this date, New Direction's line up had been distilled to a compact, searingly hot trio of Takayanagi joined on electric guitar by Akira Iijima and Hiroshi Yamazaki on drums/percussion. Over the course of 40 minutes, the group sustains an uninterrupted, highly charged attack propelled with unrelenting energy. The music is rife with noise and dissonance intruding from both sides; a vortex of sound and fury that begins to slip from even the expansive bounds of free jazz into something almost purely electronic. The trio would perform only four more times, completing the 'Another Situation' series with its 24th edition in November 1984. Eleven months later Takayanagi would debut an entirely new modality, one he called 'Action Direct.' It completely transformed his approach to guitar and sound in general by embracing an entirely abstract, solo noise music projected through massive, complex sound systems of his own design. 'Mass Hysterism' is perhaps the most powerful link in this part of Takayanagi's history - a perfect realization and farewell to one of his greatest forms en route to territories even further afield and radical. Black Editions presents 'Mass Hysterism In Another Situation' remastered and cut to double 45RPM 12" vinyl for maximum clarity and power. Housed in a heavy tip-on gatefold jacket with Pantone spot colors, spot ink pigment foil on gloss film laminate finish as well as printed inner sleeves. Featuring photographs by Tatsuo Minami and newly translated notes by Takayanagi scholar Yoshiyuki Kitazato.

It happened in 1987, it was time for Materiali Sonori's 10th anniversary, an historic goal for the label/collective born in the small Tuscany village of San Giovanni Valdarno. The small celebration brought to life a box collecting the first 3 EPs of the 'Greetings From S.G.V.' series. The series was intended as symbolic sound postcard, made with various musicians with whom the collective label shared a path, whether small or long. The Durutti Column, The Stockholm Monsters and Blaine R. Reininger (Tuxedomoon) are among the artist who took part to the project, here collected for the very first time. Lantern is pleased to pay tribute to the work of people whose passion, attitude, commitment and genuineness inspired this adventure still true to these days. 'El Nutto', their third LP, captures Alice at her best in this setting, as heard on the reveries of 'El Flippo' and the title track, this solid set of Gibbs originals showing her virtuosity, composure and curiousness, which would soon reach more cosmic highs, once she became Alice Coltrane.

Esteemed pianist Masabumi Kikuchi enjoyed a long and illustrious career in jazz that encompassed many forms. After playing in Lionel Hampton's Japanese touring band, he played on five Sadao Watanabe albums in mid-1960s and backed Sonny Rollins before studying at the Berklee College of Music. 'Matrix' was the first of five albums recorded with his Sextet and is rightly rated one of the greatest of his entire career, the album mixing well-executed covers of songs by Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Watanabe, and the 'Black Orpheus' theme with the enthralling originals 'Little Aby' and 'In Fourth Way.' Recorded in New York in May 1963 these early studio sessions feature great contributions from trumpeter Don Cherry and tenor sax giant Clifford Jordan, plus the rhythm section of Orville Harrison and Bill Wood on bass, Charles Moffett on drums, and producer Fred Lyman on flugelhorn. This is a great snapshot of the NYC music scene in the '60s, when a bunch of young, creative, uncompromising musicians invaded the city and began to change the rules of jazz.

STRAZZERI, FRANK - AFTER THE RAIN
The pianist and bandleader Frank Strazzeri enjoyed a distinguished jazz career. After backing Billie Holiday and Woody Herman, Strazzeri became a mainstay of the west coast jazz scene. His excellent album 'After The Rain,' released by Catalyst in 1976, straddled different styles and moods, Strazzeri's piano and synth melodies abetted by top accompaniment from Herman's horn alumni Sam Most and Bobby Shew, playing alongside Cal Tjader's bassist Harvey Newmark and percussionist Don Alias of Blood Sweat and Tears, with Strazzeri's son Steve behind the drumkit. Another fine fusion LP from Strazzeri that's ripe for rediscovery.

'Jazz In Silhouette' is the quintessential record of Sun Ra's late 1950s Chicago period. Recorded and issued in 1959, it marks a coda for the bandleader's bebop/hard-bop stage, as his interstellar traveler persona began to transform the band (and the music). It also charts the future, showcasing the brilliant tenor sax stylings of John Gilmore, and introduces the iconic playing of Arkestra mainstays Marshall Allen, Pat Patrick, and Ronnie Boykins. Many of the early works on these recordings would remain staples in Arkestra set lists for the rest of Sun Ra's life. This expanded edition includes the complete, contemporaneous 'Sound Sun Pleasure,' rare stereo mixes, and bonus tracks. This edition's exterior features the original space nymph cover art, which only appeared in cropped and washed-out reproductions on an early '60s version. Liner notes by Irwin Chusid, and an expanded essay by John Corbett.

Fans of Sun Ra's space bop and genre-bending jazz were in for a shock with 'Strange Strings.' Even in the eclectic and sometimes baffling Sun Ra catalog, 'Strange Strings,' first issued in 1967, is an outlier. Is it music, or just noise? Or noise as music? John Cage could not be reached for comment.
For this album, Sun Ra collected an arsenal of exotic string instruments and handed them out to his Arkestra on the precept that "strings could touch people in a special way." That the Arkestrans didn't know how to play or tune these instruments was not beside the point - it was the point. Ra framed it "a study in ignorance." The result was primitive, yet sophisticated; brutal, yet highly sensitive. In his essay for this expanded edition, musician-curator David Toop calls Strange Strings "saturated in mystery." The original 1967 Saturn LP version was monophonic, contained three tracks, and suffered distortion in the mastering (perhaps due to the high-decibel studio performance and excessive reverb). Yet some sessions were captured in stereo. A dozen strange-string works have been located, five of which are included on this remastered edition. No track titles appeared on the original Saturn LP verso, but the three works issued were later identified as 'World's Approaching,' the LP title track, and an inversion of the title, 'Strings Strange.' A belatedly discovered tape box listed the third recording as 'Strange Strange,' a title which has been used in this edition.
