Formed in Tokyo in 1969, Blues Creation made their mark with this ultra-rare debut album, a raw and electrifying set of American blues covers. Featuring tracks originally by Sonny Boy Williamson, Chester Burnett, Memphis Slim, Willie Dixon, and others, it stands as the finest testament to Japan's deep-rooted love for the blues. The band went on to release several more records before evolving into Creation, but nothing quite captured the pure blues-rock intensity of their first outing.

Moving along the shades of early psychedelia and contemporary progressive rock, Byzantyum launched the careers of Mick Barakan (later of Lone Justice), Robin Lamble, Chaz Jankel (future member of Ian Dury & The Blockheads) and Robin Sylvester. The guitarists are the band's fulcrum, giving free rein to rocking riffs and fiery leads as well as moodier 12-string passages. A very eclectic set indeed, from baroque oriented pop numbers to soaring majestic tracks. Originally released in 1972.

CUNEIFORM TABS - AGE
Quickly on the heels of their debut, Cuneiform Tabs return with 'Age,' an LP that takes a massive leap forward in both melodic sensibilities and inventiveness. Bathed in late night psychedelia and the looping repetition of a drone sample, the group's experimental penchants remain, yet this time wrapped around tunes too sweet to be denied. In pulling back a little of the crackle and haze that made their first album so inviting, the Tabs have revealed more of their pop instincts. The overall effect is a perfect set of early Animal Collective demos or Syd Barrett attempting a Television Personalities cover at 3am. The duo of Matt Bleyle and Sterling Mackinnon continue their system of trading 4-track tapes between the Bay Area and London, a furtive correspondence until sonic nuggets are fully formed. While these songs are very much the product of the Tascam and rudimentary software that is integral to the band, this album is truly the embrace of their songwriting talents - not unlike the recent breakthrough of labelmate Cindy Lee. With the dream-like strum of 'Ivy,' slow shimmer of 'Orbital Rings' and enchanting, madcap swirl of 'Blended Medal,' this is hypnagogic pop at its finest. 'Age' is the record Bob Pollard hears in his head every time he steps down to the basement to pick up a guitar. This is the sound of riding in an elevator hearing McCartney singing 'Blackbird' in the distance, only to have it draw closer and closer with each floor as you finally race down the hallway, putting your ear to each door searching for the source. This is Leonard Cohen smoking in the middle of the street outside a Suicide show. If all of this sounds phenomenal, it is. Recommended for fans of Cindy Lee, Swell Maps and Plagal Grind.

ELVEN, THE - SOLSTICE
'Solstice' is the debut album by The Elven, a side project by members of Saturna and Earthless. What began at the end of 2020 as an irrational need to write music by Rod Tirado and James Vieco from Saturna soon took on a different identity when they brought their friends Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless) on lead guitar, Tabatha Puig on keyboards and Javi Gómez on drums. In just one month, they wrote the 8 songs that make up this debut album, titled 'Solstice', in which they blend psychedelia, progressive rock and classic heavy rock. For the graphic design, they once again enlisted an illustration by Jondix (Tool, Black Sabbath, High On Fire, Electric Wizard) and the design by Jalón de Aquiles for a vinyl edition that will be released via Spinda Records, in a new collaboration with Clostridium Records (DE) and Echodelick Records (US), who previously worked together on the debut album by Loma Baja. Limited to 300 copies on yellow marbled vinyl.

Core members had been active in The Mirage, who signed with CBS and later recorded for Phillips; drummer David Hynes and bassist/future Elton John Band mainstay Dee Murray briefly joined the Spencer Davis Group, but regrouped as Portobello Explosion, which became Jawbone. The Bickershaw Festival took place over three days in May 1972, just outside of Wigan, UK. Featuring exclusive tracks from Grateful Dead, Brinsley Schwartz and Captain Beefheart, this LP gives a great snapshot through the music of what it was like to be at the festival. One audience member, 18-year old Elvis Costello, was spell bound by the festival and said that it's what convinced him that he should start a band. Joe Strummer
from The Clash, also in attendance as an audience member, said that it was his favourite concert. The LP is pressed on 180-GRAM VINYL and presented with a gatefold sleeve.

More than just a home for UK bands that were pushing the boundaries of rock music, Middle Earth also attracted some of America's finest exponents of psychedelic rock such as Captain Beefheart, The Byrds, The Fugs, Jefferson Airplane, and many more. LUNGFISH - FERAL HYMNS
The Lungfish band from Baltimore, Maryland performed and released albums on the Dischord Records label for more than 20 years. The group's consciousness alternately/simultaneously coalesced and dispersed creating a continuous quasi-musical pulse, which reached climax at semi-monthly public performances.
Lungfish is now, as it often has been, quasi, if not entirely, defunct. However, after the release of Feral Hymns in 2005, singer Daniel Higgs (who is also an accomplished visual artist) embarked on a solo career, releasing albums on Northern Liberties, Thrill Jockey, and Holy Mountain and showing his artwork both in the States and the United Kingdom. Asa Osborne is currently recording and performing solo material under the name, The Zomes.

'Battens' is album number five from elusory grey scale experimental electronics duo Loess. Like the previous output, the album features the duo's unique mosaic of clicks n' cuts style beat work, murky dubwise melodicism and chilling otherworldly textures. However, there is a refinement on display on 'Battens.' Clay and Ian have accentuated their trademark elements to maximal effect. The beats seem to have a more brandish, near swagger that was only fleetingly referenced in some of their previous works. The melodies, which formerly
have felt primarily of alien origin, almost feel a glint of humanity. Having such a unique ideology for nearly 25 years has
allowed Loess to work at a pace and level of refinement evident on 'Battens.'

The 1968 debut album from Norwegian guitar legend Terje Rypdal stands as a significant entry in the late 1960s jazz landscape, exemplifying the transition from psychedelic rock to a more intricate, freeform blend of jazz elements. Collaborating with legendary musicians like Jan Garbarek, Rypdal's work on this album showcases his innovative talent. Recorded during three sessions in Oslo in 1968, 'Bleak House' marks Rypdal's departure from the psychedelic group The Dream as he ventured into new musical territories. He would go on to become one of the most recognizable instrumentalists in European jazz, with releases on the ECM label filled with his searing, evocative guitar sounds that evoke a future tundra. Though only 21 at the time, Rypdal was already creating music that was incredibly mature, smooth, and sophisticated. While it undeniably captures the essence of the '60s, it remains enjoyable today. The album, originally released on Polydor, features slight Latin and blues influences, along with big-band arrangements that are both well-crafted and enchantingly loose. The reissue of 'Bleak House' offers much to unpack. Historically, it represents a bridge in the European transition from jazz-rock to a unique avant-garde/free jazz hybrid. Even at this early point in his career, Rypdal's ability to incorporate post-bop, fusion, and avant-garde elements into a cohesive album was an impressive feat of imagination. Rypdal has always been a bold composer, capable of weaving intoxicatingly discordant melodies, as exemplified in tracks like 'Winter Serenade,' or evoking an unearthly sadness in his more reflective pieces. 'Bleak House' is a timeless and important recording, and it is a pleasure to hear it in this 180g virgin vinyl format. A must-listen for anyone interested in the evolution of modern jazz.
