Bob Mosley, reworked, remastered and re-released - at last!
The list of artists who cite 1960s rock legends Moby Grape as an influence is unsurprisingly diverse. After all, the Northern California combo consisted of five gifted songwriters whose unique creative sparks came together as a cohesive whole. Although shady business dealings ultimately undid Moby Grape by 1971, each of the band's members might have gone on to long careers, if not outright stardom. That's certainly what should've happened for bassist and singer Bob Mosley, who released his eponymously titled Warner Bros. solo debut in '72.
The eleven tracks recorded for the album sure packed a wallop. Mosley had given the Grape its rugged, bluesy aspect, and his own LP went that way, full-throttle. Unfussy songcraft with forthright lyrics suited Mosley's deep, powerful voice_through straight-up rockers like 'The Joker,' the propulsive pop of 'Let The Music Play' and 'Squaw Valley Nils,' and the groovy-greasy, hornswaggled soul of 'Gypsy Wedding.' The sessions captured the bouncy R&B of 'Nothing To Do' and
the plaintive yearning of country-tinged 'Thanks.' With 'Hand In Hand,' Mosley brought a tough edge to an unabashed love song, while 'So Many Troubles,' the moving closer, was swathed in haunting keyboards and woe-begotten guitar. Muscular musicianship came from a core group around Mosley on bass: drummer Alllen Wehr and guitarists Woodie Berry and Frank Smith. The sessions also boasted the Memphis Horns and pedal
steel by Ed Black. So how could such strong tunes and stellar playing result in a record that didn't soar to the top of the charts, satisfying Moby Grape fans and new listeners alike? To answer that question, let's go back to the list of artists mad for Moby Grape. Along with Robert Plant, Little Steven, Beck, Chrissie Hynde, Cat Power and Jeff Tweedy is singer/songwriter/producer John DeNicola. "As a big Moby Grape fan, I anticipated any solo records from the band members, and I got this LP as soon as it came out," DeNicola recalls. "I listened to it recently and thought the low end of the bass and drums were thin, making the overall sound of the songs less than ideal. I thought, "If I could only get my hands on the original multitrack, I would love the opportunity to remix
it... better balance the rhythm section with the rest of the music to make it sound as it should. It's there, it just needs a boost." If anyone knows how things should sound, it's John DeNicola. In the 1980s, he wrote the music for both monster hits from the 'Dirty Dancing' soundtrack, '(I Had The) Time Of My Life' and 'Hungry Eyes,' earning an Academy Award and a Grammy nomination. In the '90s, his ears for talent led him
to discover a baby band called Kara's Flowers, who later changed their name to Maroon 5. Via his boutique label, Omad, he not only releases his own solo work, he produces a spectrum of artists in different genres - the only connective tissue being that DeNicola digs them. What's more, though an
accomplished multi-instrumentalist himself, DeNicola had been a bass player in his early bands, so he had a particular interest in doing right by Mosley. "Bob was one of the most influential rock bassists of all time, and for a bass player's record to be light on bass is not optimal," he deadpans. Clearly, DeNicola was the ideal person to help Bob Mosley fulfill its sonic promise. Trouble was, the original multitrack - which would have let him literally start from scratch with a full-on remix - was missing. DeNicola didn't let that stop him, however, obtaining instead the master two track DDP file from Warner Bros. "With that, I was able to 'de-mix' the record, separate out the drums, bass and vocals using a combination of AI programs, and then get the bass and drums up in volume. Not a
complete remix, no, but I was able to balance the rhythm section with the music, resulting in a fuller sound." Now, Omad is releasing Bob Mosley on CD (consult any hipster - the format is coming back!) and potentially on vinyl as well. "I'm really happy with it," DeNicola says. "I think it sounds the way it was originally intended to, and it feels great to give people an opportunity to hear Bob's masterpiece the way it never really was before." Perhaps the best news? All profits from the record will go to Mosley, a former Marine who has had his share of struggles off and on during his 81 years on the planet. "Bob's actually doing well these days, living in California with his lovely wife Connie," DeNicola says. With his first solo album getting a whole new life, Bob Mosley can finally encourage listeners to do what he asks on 'The Joker,' the
opening track: "Understand and believe my worth, hear what I have to say."

'The Relativity of Wrong' is driven by heavy bass, a tale of youthful misbehaviour, with guest vocals from Eleni Poulou, formerly of The Fall. 'Tendrils' has a darker presence, sung by Kerry, echoing and ghostly. 'Bonanza 2 Tango Sierra' and 'Look Alive!' both have a driving feel, and the power-pop is still intact with songs like 'Bubblegum Nothingness.'
'Bowerbirds And Blue Things' is a varied album that keeps the underlying Jetstream Pony sound, but with real development.

That voice belonged to Diane Luckey, a uniquely talented artist whose music was ahead of its time and who would ultimately remain largely unrecognized in her lifetime. In conjunction with the release of Aridjis Fuentes' documentary film 'Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives Of Q Lazzarus,' Sacred Bones is releasing a collection of songs that span the entirety of Q's career, showcasing the different eras of her work and the full breadth of her personality. The first collection of music to be given the blessing of Q's remaining family, 'Goodbye Horses' has the distinction of being her first and only full-length release.
Recorded between 1985 and 1995, this trove of previously unreleased music reflects some of the most interesting facets of pop music from the past four decades in a way that feels both savvy and wildly eclectic. JETSTREAM PONY - BOWERBIRDS AND BLUE THINGS
Jetstream Pony combine post-punk, indie-pop and power-pop, featuring Beth Arzy (The Luxembourg Signal/Trembling Blue Stars/Aberdeen) on vocals and percussion, Shaun Charman (The Wedding Present/The Popguns/The Fireworks) on guitar and vocals, Kerry Boettcher (Turbocat) on bass, Tom Levesley on drums, and recently joined by Mark Matthews (The Dentists/The Treasures Of Mexico) on guitar. This 2025 full length album, 'Bowerbirds and Blue Things', is a co-release between Spinout Nuggets in the UK, and Shelflife Records in North America. The band's evolution continues, and there are branches into new territory. 'The Relativity of Wrong' is driven by heavy bass, a tale of youthful misbehaviour, with guest vocals from Eleni Poulou, formerly of The Fall. 'Tendrils' has a darker presence, sung by Kerry, echoing and ghostly. 'Bonanza 2 Tango Sierra' and 'Look Alive!' both have a driving feel, and the power-pop is still intact with songs like 'Bubblegum Nothingness.'
'Bowerbirds And Blue Things' is a varied album that keeps the underlying Jetstream Pony sound, but with real development.

'THE MANY LIVES OF Q LAZZARUS (MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE)' - For almost everyone, the entry point for discovering the music of Q Lazzarus came via 'Goodbye Horses.' The song first appeared in 1988, via Jonathan Demme's 'Married To The Mob,' but it would not become fully lodged into popular consciousness until it infamously materialized again in Demme's 'The Silence Of The Lambs' in 1991. 'Goodbye Horses' felt like a self-contained universe - dreamlike and wholly unusual, an instant classic that left listeners captivated and curious about the mysterious voice behind it. That voice belonged to Diane Luckey, a uniquely talented artist whose music was ahead of its time and who would ultimately remain largely unrecognized in her lifetime. In conjunction with the release of Aridjis Fuentes' documentary film 'Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives Of Q Lazzarus,' Sacred Bones is releasing a collection of songs that span the entirety of Q's career, showcasing the different eras of her work and the full breadth of her personality. The first collection of music to be given the blessing of Q's remaining family, 'Goodbye Horses' has the distinction of being her first and only full-length release.
Recorded between 1985 and 1995, this trove of previously unreleased music reflects some of the most interesting facets of pop music from the past four decades in a way that feels both savvy and wildly eclectic. The titular 'Goodbye Horses' remains a singular piece of spooky new wave perfection and one might imagine an entire Q Lazzarus album coiled around this aesthetic, but much like singers such as Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, or Lisa Gerrard, Q's chameleonic voice could lend itself perfectly to a variety of styles and settings. Her cover of Talking Heads' 'Heaven' transforms the song into a full-throated power ballad complete with tinkly piano flourishes, while her take on Gershwin's 'Summertime' sounds like the kind of dubby club redux that could have been a perfect companion to anything from 'Nightclubbing'-era Grace Jones. Tracks like 'My Mistake' and 'Hellfire' flirt with house music and showcase just how brassy and belty Q's voice could be when she really let loose, while 'Don't Let Go' sounds like the kind of bombastic radio single Cher might have released several decades ago. Elsewhere, songs like 'Bang Bang' and 'I See Your Eyes' espouse the kind of guitar-driven alt-rock sensibilities that, in a parallel universe, could have made them staples on '120 Minutes.' 'Goodbye Horses' represents the potential for so many different kinds of careers that, for whatever reason, never fully materialized. That we now have these songs in the world, and a clearer picture of the person behind them, is nothing short of a blessing.

MEMOTONE - PRUNING
On his Discrepant debut Memotone aka Bristolian Will Yates collects some unreleased recordings under a most aptly titled name - 'Pruning.' Considering the process of pruning as a practice of selective removal, the album takes its name at face value never falling into a mere collection of tossed off material or random B-side assemblage, making it a cohesive listen throughout its disparate timeframe and evasions.
A statement about Memotone's vision itself, 'pruning' veers closer to his Fourth World/ECM/Exotica meets Sci-fi transmutations in alignment with what would be expected from a memotone release on Discrepant. 'Moss Zone' briefly sets the tone with a warm but queasy synth bedsheet that flows into the 'Weird Figures' cyber-jungle, all small twinkling percussions and rainforest pads slowly rising. 'Riders' brings the synth-flute to an early Warp meets John Hassell's 'City: Works Of Fiction' scenario that pops up again in more disrupted form on 'Wisdom [MOTHER].' 'Not What I Thought's skewed tropical guitar gets going on lo-fi percussion and dissonant synth chords while 'Jim Starling And The Inverse Church' bring to mind 'Autoditacker' era Mouse On Mars going jazz-fusion. Or what we should expect from their Smalltown Supersound stint. 'Beach Scene' is exactly it, as the sun sets into 'Come In [Don't Mind the Ghost]' Summer night's stars with all the allure of Stereolab. Alluring, that's exactly it. Do come in.

On their debut album 'Seven Dances To Embrace The Hollow,' Zürich-based artists Magda Drozd and Nicola Genovese, as Sopraterra, offer exactly what's announced: seven compositions which, as they unhurriedly flow into each other, mark potential entry points to discover what might be lying underneath. By choosing Sopraterra, which translates to "above the earth" in Italian, as their shared project's name, Drozd and Genovese indicate their own position in this archeological-looking endeavor, hinting at the potential for sonic explorations to produce deeply submerged discoveries. Sopraterra's object of inquiry isn't easily grasped, traversing histories and blending influences alike. In a time-line-bending manner, musical signifiers from the past, along with specific tonal scales lifted from baroque and medieval music, get digitally synthesized. As sonic matter, the result is distinctly of today: a collection of electro-acoustic compositions that remain experimental at their core, referencing genres like post-rock, shoegaze, or psychedelic, while evoking aural memories of ancient times. 'Seven Dances To Embrace The Hollow' pulls backward and pushes forward alike. Without ever forcing a didactic listening experience, musical motifs and archetypes are thoroughly investigated. But there is no scientific ambition at play here. Rather, the harmonies of late medieval Ars Nova or the transcendent elegance of Baroque chamber music lend their emotional qualities to perceived ideas of old times.
Oscillating between ambient and drone, the album's seven brooding compositions bring primal connections to a universally shared past to the surface. In its multi-directional positioning, 'Seven Dances To Embrace The Hollow' makes the case for embracing the confusion of warped time and paying attention to all that's rather felt than seen. These recordings show a bold mix: breathtaking a cappella interpretations of the 'Octonaires De La Vanité Du Monde' by Paschal de L'Estocart (1582) and pieces from the Geneva Psalter (1562) meet the reworkings of Sylvain Chauveau. The voices
of Chant 1450, trained in early music, sing these pieces with lyrics about transience full of emotion and elegance. Sylvain Chauveau processed individual pieces electronically, whereby transience remains sonically present in his always surprising versions. The reworkings do not take early music as a fixed, quasi-museum repertoire, but as a starting point for something new - everything is in flux, is reinterpreted, changes. A wonderful stream of fantastic music emerges, with ancient and contemporary music coming closer together than one might initially expect. 'Le Beau Du Monde - A Modern View On Early Music' is the second collaboration by Chant 1450 and Sylvain Chauveau after 'Echoes Of Harmony - Early Music Reworked' (SR447, 2017), both released by Sub Rosa.

"Born in Clarendon, Jamaica on December 3rd, 1951, Prince Jazzbo, also known as Linval Roy Carter, burst into the music scene with his hit 'Every Nigger Is A Winner' and followed it up with 'Step Forward Youth.' These songs catapulted him to international fame, leading to a successful world tour.

First ever vinyl reissue of this collaborative jam aptly named Rock Workshop. Originally released in 1970 on CBS, this could have been a major cult in the vein of Traffic 'John Barleycorn Must Die' or 'The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown,' but failed to became an instant classic. Time is a gentleman perhaps, or so it seems. And time has come to restore this marvelous manifesto. A fantastic project led by scottish axeman Alex Harvey (before his venture in the Sensational Alex Harvey Band) on guitar/vocals the Rock Workshop featured a who's who of the English jazz scene. Virtuoso Ray Russell is on fire on guitar, while trumpet player Harry Beckett, tenor saxophonist Bob Downes and clarinet/flute player Tony Roberts described the extreme regions of the rhythm'n'blues credo. The rhythm section was comprised of stunning drummer Alan Rushton, bass player Daryl Runswick and conga player Robin Jones. Filled with enough impro madness and wild acid blues licks the album is mostly an instrumental affair, the further 9 minutes of final track 'He Looks At Me' being a proper example. Even collecting a masterful rendition of traditional 'Wade In The Water' the album is a must have for any freaky progressive head. Record Store Day 2025 exclusive.
