Across their previous seven releases the Nanaimo, BC Canada-based instrumental duo Anunnaki have explored such intriguing sources of inspiration as Hermeticism, Japanese UFO folklore, and beckoning the Apocalypse. These topics considered, it will surprise few that on their EP 'Martyr Of Alexandria', the bicephalic psych-drone-rock powerhouse have turned their exploratory gaze to specific events that occurred in 5th century Alexandria. Indeed, having named themselves for mythological Sumerian deities, Dave Read (Moths & Locusts) and Arlen Thompson (Wolf Parade) suggest an intent to operate as wide-eyed sonic archeologists on a quest for truths both musical and spiritual, and as such are delving deeper and deeper into their historical fascinations with each successive release. With three brain-melting tracks occupying 30 minutes, on 'Martyr Of Alexandria; Read (basses/guitars/synths/effects) and Thompson (drums/synths/samples) have crafted a visceral aural tapestry examining the harrowing demise of Hypatia, a pagan philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician known in her day as a teacher possessed of great wisdom. As a victim of accusatory rumours emanating from a complex religiopolitical situation at a violent time in history, Hypatia was martyred following her brutal end at the hands of an incited, rabid Christian mob in 415 AD: 1,606 years on, Anunnaki pay tribute.

On Friday 10 March 2023, Bhajan Bhoy releases TWO separate albums on the same day. These will be Bhajan Bhoy's third and fourth albums, and a joint release on highly respected independent labels Cardinal Fuzz (UK) and Feeding Tube Records (USA). Drawing from the deep triple bad acid well of psychedelia, Bhajan Bhoy further shifts the parameters surrounding the perceptions aligned to this genre with a beautiful and meditative set of tracks. A kaleidoscopic sonic universe within which you will find raga-esque musical excursions, meditative Dream House drone, beautiful folk inflected jams on a Laurel Canyon tip, electronic dreamscapes and heavy guitar riffola where sometimes two chords are enough. Listening to the two albums and you could imagine Pandit Pran Nath, Spacemen 3, Pauline Oliveros, and Don Cherry drinking the same psilocybin tea beforehand, and then embarking to the studio to lay down the jams. This is the sound of freedom! Byron Coley/The Wire (January 2023) said of the previous release 'Shanti Shanti Shanti': "another fine release by Dutch musician Ajay Saggar. His basic thrust is modern psychedelia, minted from radio snippets, dub reverb flapping, elegant guitar washing, electronic drones interwoven with splashes of mock jaw harp or splashy drums, and a generally stoned atmosphere. As he states: "it was a highly focused and intensive period of work for me. The pandemic allowed me to go and work in the studio all day and into the night pretty much everyday. I'd never felt more focused in my pursuit of making a set of songs. It yielded a body of work that I am incredibly proud of, and think is some of the best stuff I've done. I was fortunate enough to have some incredibly talented players join me on some songs (Ab Baars, Gayle Brogan, Sheila Bosco, Holly Habstritt Gaal, Mees Siderius, Arvind Ganga, Aaron Lumley, Elsa v/d Linden, Ditmer Weertman). The songs evolved in a very organic manner and they are part of a journey, which is the reason why there are two separate albums... the one album feeds into the other. 'Shanti Shanti Shanti' was the album before these ones and was the first part of this triptych."

BLACK SUN ENSEMBLE - THE BLACK SUN ENSEMBLE (VOL. 2) (BLACK)
Lion and RTA's second volume of the Black Sun Ensemble's recordings for their classic first album contains an alternate version of that album, including the tracks from the Camera Obscura label CD (c. the year 2000) version of that album - well, sort of. When sifting through the masters while preparing the Lion/RTA reissue of the real, actual first Black Sun Ensemble album - as issued in 1985 on Pyknotic - it became clear that many of the original LP tracks were also on the Camera Obscura CD release, but under the wrong names. Others were present, but in versions which differed from the Pyknotic LP versions - and again, under the wrong names. So, for example, 'Mayan Dance' on the CD is actually the same theme as the Pyknotic LP 'Heart Of The Sky,' but not the same take. Here's the kicker: some of the tracks on the Camera Obscura CD share a name with a track from the Pyknotic LP, but are in fact completely new recordings, with no comparable on that original LP. 'Blue Thunder,' 'Red Ocean,' and 'Mandolin Winds' are three such compositions. This means that there are basically two quite different 'Blue Thunder's written by Jesus; two utterly different 'Red Ocean's; and two absolutely not-the-same 'Mandolin Winds' too. As a result, there are two separate Lion LP releases of Black Sun Ensemble's debut recordings: volume one (LION LP-193/RTAI007) with a black cover, as per the original, is just that: the original 1985 Pyknotic LP reissued for the first time. This second LP (LION LP-194/RTAI008), with a white cover, contains alternates and new tracks, as released on the CD reissue of BSE's debut. We felt it was important to keep the Pyknotic LP separate, to do justice to the original vision Jesus Acedo had when he self-released that music, and (eventually) found a segment of the world very willing to embrace it. But the other variations of that music are equally excellent and important, thus this second, separate LP for those gems. Comes with an 8-page booklet, with notes by Byron Coley, BSE bassist Mike Glidewell, Rich Hopkins (songwriter, Sidewinder, and founder of San Jacinto Records), and a reproduction of a poetry volume by BSE's Jesus Acedo.
This RTA edition is limited to 500 copies on black vinyl.

Repress on clear vinyl. Excellent mostly-instrumental combination of prog and psych served up by Champignons, a tight and experimental band from Québec. Released in 1972, 'Premiere Capsule', resplendent in its trippy day-glo mushroom sleeve, is a succession of seven guitar driven original compositions that manage to maintain any incredibly high standard from start to finish. All the tracks are superb, but several in particular stand out including the 11-minute experimental jam, 'Le Chateau Hante' (The Haunted Castle) and two instrumental numbers, 'Folies Du Mercredi' and 'Pop-Pino'. There is extremely good fuzz guitar throughout, as well as some exceptional flute solos courtesy of flautist Emile Naud. Hugely enjoyable and highly recommended

Most performances and recording sessions are improvised and this set is no different and even though the group opened the show with 'Baka Of The Future' from their first album 'Bes,' it is almost unrecognizable and everything the trio plays is continually morphing into the next unknown idea. As the sound, energy, and instantaneous composition flows, the trance is growing and growing, ranging from raw shapeshifting "no (un)wave," free jazz, traditional Arabic and modern experimental explorations to a concrete mystic trip from an universe expanding and contracting constantly. This is earth interrogating the sky, the sky rejoining the earth, an unknown and unwritten cosmogony.

Hugo Graf has been a place for people of all ages in a wonderful old house, its cellar was used for underground concerts, but Graf Hugo got fucked by the government in the manner of capitalism. Electric Moon was invited to their farewell festival and had the great honour to play the very last into this old building. The second half of the concert, Erich of the Hugo crew joined the band and they were freaking out together. Dennis (also from Hugo) recorded it, Dave produced it and 'Hugodelia' was born. After many delays, Sorcerer is please as punch to finally reissue the debut LP from 1987 by Milwaukee space-rock gods, F/i: 'Why Not Now?... Alan!' Available for the first time on the format since its initial release, it remains a Holy Grail item for lovers of cosmic rock & roll sounds from Underground Amerika in the 1980s. F/i had been churning out tape upon tape of experimental electronics since the early '80s. Influenced by krautrock (particularly Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel) and the harsh noise of industrialists Throbbing Gristle and early SPK, by the mid '80s they morphed into a fully fledged "rock" band, albeit one incorporating all of the above.
This LP is the perfect synthesis of these sounds: grimy, lo-fi "rock" with elements of industrial clang and extended, Hawkwind-ish space-rock jams; from the two-step cosmic churn of 'Electric Waltz' to the `Neubauten-style bang and bash of 'Zombie Theme'. Remastered by Mikey Young, the sleeve perfectly replicating the original, this edition is a limited edition of 500 copies.

This collection from the hard-hitting, bluesy biker-rock outfit led by legendary front man Nicky Moore (Tiger, Samson, Mammoth) contains the band's earliest recordings, roughly dating from the period 1969-'71, and including the previously unreleased heavy psych classic 'Warrior And The Mermaid'. Hackensack was a killer live band and 'Give It Some' is the first vinyl offering since 1974's LP 'Up The Hard Way'. "It's dark and still in the chief's village protected by mountains of the great southern regions of Africa..." so begins the seventeen minute epic 'African Day' that kicks off the greatest Afro-psychedelic concept album ever made - first released on Parlophone in 1971. Hawk's music on this epochal album is a fusion of tribal African rhythms with acoustic hippie music elements - long solo jams, saxophone breaks, percussion - sounding at times like an African version of Embryo fronted by Tim Buckley! In Johannesburg, bursting, like Durban, with musicians aeons ahead of their time, Hawk added the sunburnt, brown prairies of Africa to the genre of the concept album - the heady, steady beat of drums, and enough cross-rhythms to make you dizzy. Add the mesmerizing voices - and the telling of a story. Tuck in the ranging flute, the saxophone. The deep bass buzz. And the hypnotic talking drums. Music the African way: earthy stuff - virile, extraordinary, substantial. Hawk were listening to a lot of Hugh Tracey tapes (the Afro-musicologist who travelled Africa capturing sounds and music on tape for posterity). They went to Swaziland and came back with their own sounds: drums and a burning desire to make their own brand of African music. From all of this came 'African Day.' The Lion/RTA reissue comes with an LP-sized 12-page booklet which includes a complete band history by music writer Owen Coetzer, packed with photos, plus the story of the re-discovery of the multi-track master tapes and the transfer of those newfound tapes that resulted in this very reissue.

The first release from the new ITT archive reissue series is 2018's 'Autodidact.' Originally released on a 10" lathe cut by Ack Ack Ack Records in Feb 2018. Heres a bit about the record in Oli's own words: "I recorded the bulk of this record over a weekend in January 2018, in the midst of a very minor breakdown that was to last for pretty much the entire year. I was living in a big house all on my own, smoking too much and not really seeing any people. Happy days indeed. It was tracked in the back room of 97 Hambledon Road, Middlesbrough using two questionable microphones, a broken HH 100 amp, my friend's drums and a Tascam DP08 (that wasn't to see the year out, RIP 2009-2018) When I was done, Robbie came round and recorded a ton of violin drones through my amp and I remember feeling like I'd gone into a trance a few times, then Ben recorded his parts at home and sent them over. Mixed and mastered the same night - I released it myself a month later as a lathe cut 10" and then promptly moved on. I listened to the album for the first time in years to write this sleeve note and I think it is possibly the closest I've ever got to capturing the sound I hear in my head - I love how grubby and cavernous it sounds, claustrophobic and swirling - the track 'Autodidact' I have recorded 4 more times since this version and I've never got that sound back. 'Be As Good To Others As They Are Not To You' starts as a mystery. A piece of tangible vinyl with often transient and evanescent content; sound appearing and fading such that you can lose certainty as to whether it emanates from the record or from out in the street. The music measured and atmospheric; a rural psychedelia on the cusp between folk and country; gnomic lyrics, meditating on loss as a stage in the cycle of nature, with a strong impression of a patient, unforced gestation.
The sleeve has a stark beauty; the front being a fine piece of John Hurford frontier art, akin to that of Jeff Horsey's 'Rattlesnakes And Heartstrings.' There is no legend and nothing on the spine either. The back shows two rustic, bearded gentlemen with small guitar, a pump organ, and an ancient zither; there are song titles but they're barely decipherable.
This pair are Jens Unossun and Arne Jonasson. Jens is a founder member of The Spacious Mind, a notable Swedish ensemble who, for nigh on three decades, have been releasing memorable psychedelic music. They famously accompanied Tom Rapp, of Pearls Before Swine, at his Terrastock appearance in London in 1999. Jonasson is a regular collaborator with Jens on such side-trips as The Holy River Family Band. They're the sole performers on six of the eight tracks here; Jens singing and playing keyboards, Arne on various stringed instruments, and both adding percussion. The other two - 'Sweet Home Blues (Redneck Dumbfuck Blues)' and 'Green Was The Day (Bottom Of The Well)' - see them joined by the Head Country Hoedowners - Snosun and Aarnson Jones, Black Owl, and Dave Hell - and the presence of these acclaimed purveyors of outlaw mutation boogie signal changes in mood. The Jones Brothers also serve as producers and arrangers.

One of the very best records on Garden of Delights, if not the best one in general. Purely psychedelic music. There are no weak parts on the album at all. Only impressive songs played by talented musicians, recorded professionally, and taken from the master tapes. Everything fits together quite perfectly. Fans of early Pink Floyd will thoroughly enjoy the LP. Its style is reminiscent of the late 1960s. All songs, except for the rather catchy "Lory", are very mysterious and reveal their real beauty only after being listened to for several times. It's a shame that Lightshine from Emmerich have not released any further material. The one at hand is an aural pleasure from the first to the very last tone. The original LP was released on the Trefiton label in 1976. The new edition contains a four-page insert with a detailed band history in German and English, lyrics, discography, photographs, and much valuable information on the Trefiton label.

Avant-jazz/psychedelic rock recorded live at an anti-war rally in Washington D.C., in June 1972. "Richard Nixon has heard Love Cry Want; you probably haven't - we're here to remedy that. The story: In June 1972, Nixon ordered aide J.R. Haldeman to cut short a concert in Washington, D.C.'s Lafayette Park because the president feared that Love Cry Want's roiling sounds would trigger rioting and possibly levitate the White House. It may have been the disgraced leader's most astute decision ever. For Love Cry Want's lone recorded artifact harnesses a scary power that rightfully put the fear in corrupt politicians. The six pupil-dilating tracks here still strike the ear as alien and terrifyingly wild. Love Cry Want consisted of Joe Gallivan (drums, steel guitar, Moog synth, percussion), Nicholas (guitar synthesizer, ring modulator), Jimmy Molneiri (drums, percussion) and Larry Young (Hammond organ). After establishing himself as a leader on the Blue Note label in the 1960s, Young played on Miles Davis' 'Bitches Brew,' John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana's Love Surrender Devotion, and the first three Tony Williams Lifetime albums. He emerged from those sessions at an exalted level of inspiration and with a formidable fire in his belly, and these traits helped shape Love Cry Want into a sui generis classic - a tone poem expressed with a flamethrower. Nicholas and Gallivan more than rise to the occasion. Using a self-built guitar synthesizer, Nicholas stuns throughout the disc with brash flashes of Hendrix-ian extravagance. Makajodama is the unusual name for this young instrumental quartet from Sweden. The band was formed by Mathias Danielsson, guitarist for the progressive rock band Gösta Berlings Saga. In the course of searching for another avenue to express his own musical ideas he met Mattias Ankarbrandt, the former drummer of The Carpet Knights. Their goal was to blend both written and improvised music. Through the walls of the cellar of Mathias' rehearsal studio, he could hear someone practice violin everyday, and since some of his new ideas included strings he decided to find out who the player was. After a month searching, they located their man Johan Klint who immediately joined Mattias and Mathias. As luck would have it Johan knew a cellist, Karin Larsdotter, who was also interested in improvisation as well and she came onboard, rounding out the quartet. The band invited Anekdoten's guitarist, Nicklas Barker, to mix the album. Makajodama's debut is a direct reflection of the quartet's influences: Third Ear Band, Univers Zero, Swedish psych pioneers Älgarnas Trädgård, the kraut rock spirit of Can and Faust, and Swedish contemporary composers Karl-Birger Blomdahl and Allan Pettersson. The result is a unique collision of progressive and post rock that sounds like the musical offspring of early King Crimson and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Limited to 300 copies on black vinyl.

"Fans of the Kosmische sound rejoice as sonic pioneers Dom Keen and Jonathan Parkes return with another instalment of their essential record series. I found my way to Studio Kosmische via Parkes' Korb project. Whilst I am admittedly tardy to the party, I'm nonetheless smitten by the sounds your about to enjoy in the grooves of this here record. The album is split into two musical journeys across its two sides. 'The Rites Of Saturn' starts as a tribal dance before the song enters a black hole and the sounds of the cosmos permeate the speakers. We drift along for a spell enveloped in the calm of the never-ending expanse before emerging back where we started. The drums welcoming us back to the dance. I get lost in this track every time and it sends me running to the turntable to flip the record to continue the journey. Side B finds us 'Beyond The Circle Of The Fixed Stars.' This is what I'd deem a groovy little number. The minimal bass trades licks with the guitar before a synth line kicks in. Check out the drums by the way. Gloriously busy but never intrusive. They absolutely steal the show for me. Another journey of a track, it transforms before your ears into this mellow, pastoral acoustic jam. It really does feel welcoming and almost like a homecoming. If you've been following Studio Kosmische then you'll know the quality these guys produce. If, like me, this is your first foray then my dear listener you're in for a treat. 'CV Sessions' are a combination of the time of the coronavirus and the equipment Sula used in these times, which is analog gear connected and modulated with CV cables (control voltage). Double meaning. Sula used a bunch of small analog synthesizers, drummachines, sequencers, a polyphonic synth, a string ensemble, a casio SK 1 & SK 60, Stylophone x1, guitars, a bass, Mellotron and whatever. Recorded simply and never spending much time on it. The first track was recorded late March 2020, others followed until December. All music composed, performed, recorded and mixed by Sula Bassana (Dave Schmidt) in his bedroom. Mastered by Eroc. Coverdesign by Sula. Limited to 500 copies on hazy red vinyl. Sula did it again. An album recorded in 3 evenings. This time some 'Loop Station Drones'. With guitar, effect pedals, 2 loop stations, 2 guitar amps, a syncable drum computer, a very old organ from GDR (Weltmeister TO 200/5), a very old synthesizer (Roland SH 5) and a modern one (Roland SE-02) Sula instantly composed 7 tracks. Later Sula cutted them down a little and made some very little overdubs. 'Roadburn Haze' was exclusively made for the Roadburn Festival Redux in April 2021. Recorded on the 28th of March, together with tracks 2 and 7. Tracks 3-6 recorded on the 13th and 14th of May for Radio KFJC home stream-concert. But only the first 3 of them appeared. These were filmed by Thierry Miguet for Wah Wah TV and you can watch it at his great Youtube channel.

Tasavallan Presidentti were, together with Wigwam, the pioneers of the Finnish progressive rock movement. Svart Records have an ongoing archive project with the band, the first fruit of which was the 'Live In Lambertland' record in 2019, now sold out. Next in the series is the live compilation 'Changing Times And Movements'. Whereas 'Live In Lambertland' was a full live set with the band's latter day vocalist Eero Raittinen, this double album is a documentary of Tasavallan Presidentti's early years with the English-born vocalist Frank Robson at the helm. The record consists of three live recordings from 1970 and 1971. The earliest shows date from the first ever Ruisrock festival in Turku, Finland 1970 and the Skeppsholmen Festival in Stockholm, Sweden the same summer. The album finishes with a live appearance at the Poppop Festival in Lappeenranta, Finland in 1971. These previously unheard archival finds present a showcase of the formidable presence that Tasavallan Presidentti had on stage in the early days in their career. 'Changing Times And Movements' includes, in addition to live renditions of material from the band's first two studio albums, six tracks the band never recorded. 'Whirlwind Nightmare', 'The Old Woman' and 'Gigolo' were eventually recorded by the Finnish rock singer Kirka in the Finnish language, but this is the first time they're presented as Tasavallan Presidentti originals, in English. 'Going Back' was a Frank Robson song which was abandoned when Robson left the band. 'Impressions Of India' ended up on Jukka Tolonen's first solo album, and 'Ain't Ya Coming Home' is a Blodwyn Pig cover which the band often played live around the time.

True acid wizards of the 1980s/1990s psychedelic underground TreaTmenT performed at Stonehenge Free Festival and at squats and clubs all over London including the now legendary Alice In Wonderland, The Crypt and Club Dog where they assaulted the minds of those present with their unique and somewhat terrifying blend of '60s psychedelia and '70s space rock, all liberally spiked with a questioning punk attitude. Performing with Dr & The Medics, Ozric Tentacles, The Magic Mushroom Band, Naz Nomad and The Nightmares and other luminaries of the neo-psychedelic space rock revival, TreaTmenT were an integral part of the scene and possibly the most psychedelic band of them all. Hardcore to the max, the band insisted on performing in a psychedelicised state, looking like a cross between Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come and early Pink Floyd and often with a lightshow. Firmly fixated on taking their audience on the trip of a lifetime TreaTment consisted of Adam Blake (Jacket Xerxophon) on guitar and vocals, Gordon Leach (Gordon Zola) on further guitar and vocals, Clive Leach (Evil C. Live, Ron Number, Curtis Vile) on bass/trombone, Paul Ross (The Big Beat, Mr Raagh) on drums/percussion and Paul McWhinnie (Mutant) on keyboards, noises and vocals. They were without doubt a live phenomenon, and although they released a couple of singles, cassettes, a live album and a studio album - 'Cypher Caput' - on the Delerium label (home to Porcupine Tree), they never really managed to commit their mind-blowing magic to vinyl. Now, nearly 20 years after it was recorded TreaTment are releasing a limited-edition double vinyl LP of their second studio album 'How Much Is Enough?' in memory of guitarist Gordon Leach who sadly passed away in 2021. The album was intended to be released on Delerium in 2000 but never was and whilst one track 'Keep Ahead' appeared on the Cherry Red box set 'Last Daze Of The Underground - Delerium Records Anthology' in 2011 nothing else has seen the light of day until now. Fans of the band will note cornerstones of their live set such as the wondrously trippy 'What The Hell To Do,' the humorous swipe at the music press 'Hate The Band,' the melodic keyboard swirling 'Restless,' the frenetic guitar cross fire of 'No Understanding' and the nihilistic nightmare 'Blot Out.' Housed in a gatefold sleeve packed with photos and memorabilia as well as for the first time the full history of the band and limited to only 300 on 180 gram vinyl 'How Much Is Enough?' will no doubt be seen in the future as one of the landmark releases of the '80s/90s neo-psychedelic revival. Very exceptional artrock/underground, featuring a Hohner clavinet and Latin lyrics. Played by real talents and professionals and neatly recorded at the well-known Munich Union-Studio. Eddy Marron had been a professional musician since 1958, had performed in Innsbruck on the occasion of the 1964 Winter Olympics, and later made a name for himself with Dzyan and Missus Beastly. He died on February 6th, 2013. Keyboarder Sylvester Levay had a musical degree and was a professional musician as well. He would later write some highly successful musicals. He and the third man, drummer Christian von Hoffmann, were members of the same orchestra. Besides their professional duties, the three of them wanted to realize their dream and recorded this one LP in 1971, calling themselves Vita Nova and never having had any live gigs at all. It was an edition of only 500 copies, which is today traded at about 1,000 in mint condition. The new edition contains two bonus tracks which were then planned to form a single that wasn't, however, released. Just listening to the smashing "Whirl wind" makes the LP worth its money.

Blind Owl Wilson was a truly great guitarist and vocalist whose deep well of psychedelic blues songs were buried amongst the catalog of major label rockin' blues band Canned Heat. Blind Owl served as Canned Heat's guitarist and would chip in a song here and there as a front man. A couple of those songs became huge hits in the '60s - 'Going Up The Country' and 'On The Road Again'. Blind Owl's songs for Canned Heat stood in stark contrast to the bands blustery blues rock - his was a gentle and nuanced voice and the themes of his song were all about personal heartbreak, grasping for cosmic understanding, and ecological justice. Here we have an LP of Blind Owl's songs from Canned Heat's records - left to sit alone and take you somewhere unexpected. Blind Owl's personal vision quest can be heard throughout these songs. 'Renoir Of The Toys' is a deep dive into the world of Youri Kun, the nom de plume of Japanese guitarist, singer and
songwriter Hiroshi Nar. It follows a similar compilation,
'Unheld Ball,' released in 2022 on Japanese label Inundow; like that album, 'Renoir Of The Toys' draws from the rich catalogue
of outsider psych-garage and rock recorded by Youri Kun over the past two decades. Deeply wired into the history of Japanese underground music, Nar was a founding member of legendary
'70s outfit Datetenryu, and a member of both Brain Police (Zuno Keisatsu) and Les Ralllizes Dénudés (Hadaka No Rallizes), appearing on the latter's '77 Live.' After going to ground during the 1980s, Nar started making music with Niplets in the mid-'90s, and releasing music at a prolific pace in 2000 - an excellent run of (some times archival) CDrs on the Hello Goodbye Studio label, both solo, and with his groups Molls, Niplets and Port Cuss; an album on P.S.F. by Jokers, where he was joined by fellow Rallizes member Yokai Takahashi, and drummer Toshiaki Ishizuka (Brain Police, Vajra, Cinorama, etc.); and sixteen albums (and counting) as Youri Kun, for labels Gyunne Cassette, Inundow, and Hören. He's also fallen in with the Acid Mothers Temple crowd, guesting on a few of their albums, and recording a live set with Kawabata Makoto's Nishinihon trio. All Nar's music shares a deceptive primitivism; it moves with the simplicity of the best 1960s garage punk, but its edges are blurred and stretched, allowing for all kinds of weird, elliptical, and psychedelic moves to happen in its margins. His guitar playing on songs like 'Kakunin' (from 2011's 'Yamaimo Boogie') shimmies and slurs magnificently; 'Kurokami,' from 2012's 'Su,' has clanking six strings scrawling over loose, spaced-out synth; there are clunky psychobilly moves ('Oshiro No Ninjya'), spirited rave-ups for rattling organ and sputtering guitar ('Totsugeki'), and some lovely, drowsy, melancholy moments ('Sora'). The constant throughout is Nar's blues-blurred, drawling voice, as unique a tool as the non-idiomatic speak-sing styles of solo Syd Barrett, Jad Fair, or Dave E. McManus. There are also three Les Rallizes Dénudés covers here, where Nar locates the pop genius at the heart of songs like 'Shiroi Yoru' and amplifies this with his simple garage-reverential take on things. 'Renoir Of The Toys'
is yet more evidence that Hiroshi Nar was, and is, one of Japan's musical visionaries, a lonesome voice dedicated to a singular, streamlined vision, one that's in eternal pursuit of the joy and kicks at the heart of rock'n'roll, and a
reminder of what a great, unpretentious rock'n'roller truly should be.

West Coast Consortium's late 1960s 45s were sophisticated, lavishly-orchestrated close harmony pop affairs. At heart, though, they were a garage psychedelic pop band, as can be heard on 'Mr. Umbrella Man', which assembles the pick of the four demo albums they made between 1967 and 1969. Now heard for the first time, this astonishing cache of recordings reveals that, left to their own devices, West Coast Consortium ditched the brass and strings arrangements of their singles in favour of Mellotrons, fuzz guitars, Vox Continental organs and wah-wah pedals, while hitherto unreleased nuggets like 'Santa Monica Bay', 'Aimie (Sing Your Song For Me)' and the woozy 'Mr. Umbrella Man' show a parallel debt to the lo-fi, DIY approach of the Beach Boys circa 'Smiley Smile' and 'Friends'.

Peau De Peche recorded an album in 1994. The album was to be released in Europe, but a string of unlucky coincidences happened; the label ran out of money, the master tape got lost in a fire at the recording studio. Years later, some cassettes were found with the songs for 'The Lost Album'. The band finally agreed that these recordings had to be released, so all tracks have been remastering and recreating. The 11 songs by Peau De Peche on 'The Lost Tapes' is one of the highlights of Norwegian garage-punk. From the era when The Cosmic Dropouts, The Lust-O-Rama, The Cutbacks, The Euroboys and Peau De Peche were the hottest bands on the scene.

TOTAL REJECTION - THE TIME TRAVELLER'S 3RD... (BLACK)
...WILL AND TESTAMENT' - The third album from these garage rocking pop-psych heads is very possibly the best one yet.
Taking their '60s influenced garage rock music a step further, 'The Time Traveller's...' finds deeper darker depths. Influences are worn on the front of t-shirts, quite openly yes, but you can actually believe these guys know what they're wearing! This album builds on the raw sound of its predecessors with a further blast of psych'n'roll. Tremelo and wah wah pedals get abused to squalling effect, Keith Moon-esque drums clatter and the Hammond wails. It's ALIVE! And THRILLING!
The songs are stuffed with pop melodies and the sound has its tentacles over all manner of '60s bands - the cover of Bohemian Vendetta's 'Enough' gives a clue as to where the band's collective head is. The album is beautifully produced in a way it sounds like it wasn't produced at all. Totally raw and occasionally rough-edged, exactly how music was recorded, before technology smoothed everything out to near blandness.
Guitars twang, chime, fuzz and wah-wah into a frenzy of excitement, vocals stretch beyond their abilities and occasionally scream and break, while the drums biff bang and pow (er) their way through, while somehow holding everything together. Organs swirl, and a variety of 'strange sounds' all of which were created by experimentation, rather than using modern day 'plug ins' or 'pressing buttons', will have you wondering, what is that?...
