BROWN, BARRY - LOVE AND PROTECTION
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Barry Brown was one of the handful of upcoming artists that came to define the emerging dancehall style as a singer with a distinctive high tenor that was instantly recognizable, and one which inevitably made a lasting impression on the listener. His lyrics were witty, gritty, and full of gusto, typically addressing the trials and tribulations facing the underprivileged, but also celebrating the positive aspects of ghetto life, including the irresistible lure of the local sound systems, the need to enjoy a loving relationship with a woman, and the various other joys one may encounter along the way. Most of the work on 'Love And Protection,' an intriguing compilation that surfaced in the mid-1990s, brings us back to Barry Brown's peak period as heard on the 'Cool Pon Your Corner' and 'Far East' LPs, along with the original unembellished mixes of two EPs released by Black Roots, as well as some harder to trace material, such as the vibrant digital title track. Running the gauntlet from 'reality' tunes to dance numbers to songs of loving romance and everything in between, it ultimately emphasizes Barry Brown's impressive versatility, highlighting the important role he played in the shift from roots to dancehall.

Neo-Mod act the Carpettes began as a Stones-influenced school band, formed in the small northeast Norman town of Houghton-le-Spring in the mid-1970s, the trio of frontman Neil Thompson, bassist George Maddison, and drummer Kevin Heard shifting to punk before signing to Small Wonder as a Mod revival act. By the time they joined the Beggar's Banquet roster in 1978, Heard was replaced by Tim Wilder (with Simon Smith of the Merton Parkas briefly in the fold). Sophomore album 'Fight Amongst Yourselves' is arguably their best, the appealing material ranging from the socially-relevant power-pop of the title track and the pop-punk of 'The Reason I'm Lonely' to the reggae cadences of 'The Last Lone Ranger'.

In 1975, singers Bruce Ruffin, Bobby Davis and Dave Collins - the latter of reggae duo Dave & Ansel Collins - came together to form Chain Reaction, a short-lived UK harmony soul group who recorded their only album 'Indebted To You' for Gull in 1977. This sought after session includes their popular version of Lamont Dozier 'Why Can't We Be Lovers,' the sweet soul single 'Never Lose Never Win' and the non album single 'This Eternal Flame.' Rare groove alert: The electric funk of 'Hogtied' is the top of the crème here, with a bass line reminiscent of Aaron Neville's 'Hercules,' a sumptuous clavinet and a majestic wah-wah guitar.

'Oddities, Abnormalities And Curiosities' is an absolutely fresh and honest album and is often overlooked. There's still the old playfulness and anarchic aggressiveness ('Brick,' 'Career Day'), paired with an ironic wink, and the rough edges that will probably protect them from commercial frenzy this time too. If Keith then goes back to work frustrated, it's not at least your fault, tight-fisted ignorants. Full of blazing guitars, thundering drums and ear-piercing screams, and while it isn't entirely slam dance worthy like their earlier albums, any real fan should appreciate this as a true punk rock piece of art. Circle Jerks fans, who remembered the band for their short street anthems and sarcastic political songs of the early '80s seem to forget that in 1995 when this record was recorded, Reagan wasn't in the white house. Sure, things weren't perfect politically, but the Circle Jerks weren't known for their political dissent. They sang about everything. They were the party band, and on 'Oddities' it shows.

During the early 1980s, stylistic dancehall toaster Earlando Neil became Early B chatting on the sound systems Soul Imperial Hi-Fi and King Majesty, consolidating his reputation on the mighty Kilimanjaro. During his long and illustrious career the French composer and musique concrète pioneer Pierre Henry created a lare amount of incidental music to accompany literary texts, both on record and for the stage, from Jules Verne to Victor Hugo, from Lautréamont to Antonin Artaud. This incredibly rare LP from 1959 is a radio play about the life of French pilot and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, based on the 1956 book by Luc Estang on the subject. The interpreters are a small theater troupe including French actor Paul Meurisse (1912-1979), famous for popular films and as a member of national theater company La Comédie Française. Underlying key scenes, Pierre Henry's contribution to the play consists of electronic and musique concrète sounds, adding a contemporary dimension to the text. A beautiful piece from one of the mid-20th century's truly brilliant sonic explorers.

The Vietnam war, the excruciating motto 'turn on, tune in, drop out', all of a sudden we were in a new era, just across the lysergic exploitation and the political turmoil. The self-titled album by American trio Goldenrod was released on a small run in 1969 on the enigmatic Chartmaker. An instrumental album full of extended and improvised jam recorded in their hometown of Los Angeles. It comprises of just four tracks, enough for an essential trip. Titles such as 'Karmic Dream Sequence' and 'Descent Of The Cyclopeans' offers a new exploratory vision, between the past and the future. Goldenrod was a rare metaphysical drug experience you wouldn't miss again! All three band members met while playing behind The Fifth Dimension and they had earlier played with Ballroom who were a pre-The Millennium-Sagittarius band. After all the three members became all of a sudden top LA session men. Jerry Scheff went on to play with The Millennium (the Californian super group led by Curt Boettcher, basically consisting of psychedelic rock musicians) while Ben Benay appeared in the blues-rock outfit Funzone in the seventies.

Fully licensed, 140gr vinyl. Reissued for the first time on vinyl, an amazing showcase of roots and reggae lovers, originally released on Trojan in 1977. Although his place as a reggae pioneer cannot be questioned, Owen Gray has felt for many years that he never got his due from Jamaica, his homeland. On August 6 2023, the government finally recognized his contribution awarding him with the honor of Order Of Distinction, Jamaica's sixth-highest honour. Gray, now 87, is ecstatic about what he considers an overdue and deserved reward. In the rocksteady era, he recorded for producer Sir Clancy Collins AKA Sir Collins. His popularity continued throughout the 1960s, working with producers such as Clement Dodd, Prince Buster, Sydney Crooks, Arthur "Duke" Reid, Leslie Kong, and Clancy Eccles, including work as a duo with Millie Small, with songs ranging from ska to ballads. He continued to record regularly, having a big hit in 1968 with 'Cupid.' His 1970 track 'Apollo 12' found favour with the early skinheads, and in 1972 he returned to Island Records, recording reggae versions of The Rolling Stones' 'Tumblin' Dice' and John Lennon's 'Jealous Guy,' although they met with little success. During this period, he regularly had releases on Pama and Pioneer Internacional label, Camel Records, and one single on Hot Lead Records. He had greater success in Jamaica, however, with 'Hail The Man,' a tribute to Emperor Haile Selassie, which was popular with the increasing Rastafari following.

With a series of excellent cover version - BB King's 'The Thrill Is Gone,' The Beatles' 'A Hard Days' Night' (stylistically related to the acid r&b Stax Records was in charge at the time) and Blind Faith's 'Presence Of The Lord' - the record is full of acid-blues chops and sensuous numbers. Filling the gap between modern psychedelia and Afro-American consciousness, 'For The People' literally ascend to the title of black tinged rock opera.

Message were a progressive rock band based in Germany formed by British guitarist Allan Murdoch and vocalist/woodwinds player Tommy McGuigan. Between 1972 and 1980 they recorded seven albums. McGuigan left after the fourth, 'Synapse.' Murdoch continued to lead the band through several lineup changes and a succession of three different lead singers: David Hanselmann (on 'Using The Head,' later with Triumvirat), Anna Haigis (on their track from the 'Brain Festival' live album) and Sammy Kunig (on their last two albums: 'Astral Journeys' and 'Miles Of Smiles').

Another psych holy grail finally seeing the light of day. Oasis was an American rock band from Marin County, California active in the 1970s. They eventually morphed from the prog-folk ensemble R J Fox. Their self-titled debut album was released as a private press in 1973 by the Cranbus label in a small run of 150 copies, imagine that... The record was in fact never released in the States but only in Canada, such a mystery today. Coming from the west coast the band - led by female vocalist and eclectic piano player Sherry Fox - was certainly informed by local stalwarts (Ultimate Spinach and Jefferson Airplane may come to mind) but had certain similarities with the Allman Brothers country rock guitars and David Crosby vocal harmonies circa 'If I Could Only Remember My Name'. Not to mention the key jazz folk albums of Joni Mitchell. Here's a superb psychedelic folk rock manifesto, still fascinating and over the top, in the name of universal love.

RSD 2024 release. For the first time on vinyl, the Outsiders demos from the 'Calling On Youth' debut album and 'One To Infinity' EP, both released in 1977. Here's Adrian Borland's first band, before he went to form obscure synth-wave project Second Layer and then joining iconic new wave heroes The Sound. The compilation comes with the addition of several early compositions too. The Outsiders were probably the first post punk band ever, altogether with Wire. Comes on red vinyl.

This almost entirely instrumental album with "groovy" sounds by the legendary Plaster Casters, the Chicago groupies who started in the late '60s with Jimi Hendrix and later the likes of Jello Biafra and Ariel Pink, was produced by music business veteran Bob Thiele and released on his newly launched New York-based Flying Dutchman record label, which mostly released jazz and blues, including important albums by Gil Scott-Heron, Gato Barbieri, Oliver Nelson, Lonnie Liston Smith and Thiele's wife, pop singer Teresa Brewer.

RSD 2021 RELEASE! An experimental avant-dub/post-punk album of sorts, this notable 1982 album by Playgroup gets reissued on 180-GRAM CLEAR VINYL. Playgroup was more than anything a collective, based somewhere around Bristol and London. Drummer Bruce Smith was the key figure behind the project. Neneh Cherry's husband and fabulous motorik force for The Pop Group, The Slits, New Age Steppers, African Head Charge and - more recently - Public Image Limited, Bruce brought the post-punk aura into the realm of controlled chaos with several partners in crime. Playgroup is the so-called English version of Jamaican dub, informed by the industrial revolution and the studio wizardy of On U Sound acolytes.

Flutist Prince Lasha and alto saxophonist Sonny Simmons were one of the great teams in the "New Thing" era. Recorded in New York in May 1963 these early studio sessions feature great contributions from trumpeter Don Cherry and tenor sax giant Clifford Jordan, plus the rhythm section of Orville Harrison and Bill Wood on bass, Charles Moffett on drums, and producer Fred Lyman on flugelhorn. This is a great snapshot of the NYC music scene in the '60s, when a bunch of young, creative, uncompromising musicians invaded the city and began to change the rules of jazz.

Recorded in 1993, towards the end of the Ramones' career, this album is often set apart from other Ramones releases in that it is entirely composed of covers. 'Acid Eaters' forms a musical tribute to the Ramones' '60s favorites, and highlights the influence that garage rock bands like The Seeds or the Amboy Dukes, and better known bands such as The Beach Boys, The Who, Love, The Troggs and The Rolling Stones (all of whom are covered in this album), had on their music.

Formed in Lewisham, southeast London, punk band The Business joined the Oi! scene after supporting The 4 Skins in 1981. Debut single 'Harry May' hit the Indie charts before the group disintegrated, leading frontman Micky Fitz to recruit new members. UPSIDE - UPSIDE
Upside is a legendary hardcore/punk band from Sassuolo near Modena (Italy) that started in the early '80s and is still performing to this day. They were part of the scene that gave us bands like Stigmathe, Raw Power, Nabat, Dioxina, Cani, No Jap, Hydra, Stalag 17, RAF Punk... In 1983 they debuted on vinyl with 'Nati Per Soffrire' 7" but even before that they recorded the first demo tape with great songs that never came out elsewhere. Political punk verging on hardcore tinged with dark overtones, both musically and lyrically. Very critical, almost apocalyptic lyrics about society. Their music influences seem to merge early UK 82 stuff with Italian HC/punk of the time as well as '80s Finnish HC, although not as fast as most of their Scandinavian counterparts. If you liked the Link Lärm LP on No Plan records, this could be something for you as well. This LP gathers 10 songs (plus a hidden track) from the demo, remastered, for the first time on vinyl. Comes with a foldout 12" insert with band photos, lyrics, flyers and band's history in a deluxe 350 gr laminated cover printed on both sides.

Originally released in 1992, this is an all-Discharge covers tribute compilation including Extreme Noise Terror, Concrete Sox, Disaster, Raw Noise, the legendary Japanese crusties C.F.U.D.L., among others. RSD 2024 release. Overdue reissue of the first three 12" in the record series dedicated to musicians who took part to the Greetings festival. It happened in 1987, it was time for Materiali Sonori's 10th anniversary, an historic goal for the label/collective born in the small Tuscany village of San Giovanni Valdarno. The small celebration brought to life a box collecting the first 3 EPs of the 'Greetings From S.G.V.' series. The series was intended as symbolic sound postcard, made with various musicians with whom the collective label shared a path, whether small or long. The Durutti Column, The Stockholm Monsters and Blaine R. Reininger (Tuxedomoon) are among the artist who took part to the project, here collected for the very first time. Lantern is pleased to pay tribute to the work of people whose passion, attitude, commitment and genuineness inspired this adventure still true to these days. WHERE'S THE POPE? - WHERE'S THE POPE?
Hailing from Adelaide, South Australia and formed in 1985, the 'debut' full-length by Where's The Pope? established the band as a bridge between greasy, hardcore punk thrills and manic thrash attacks. After a hiatus and a slight line-up change, 1990's 'Sunday Afternoon BBQ's' diverts from the typified, aural reference points in critical UK punk icons such as Disorder and Discharge (popular in Australia at the time), but sees the band refined as they carve out a passage soaked entirely in their own electric stink. This is a record rejoicing in the lore of beery adolescents on the edge of the city streets with the dark, frenetic menace of 'Geek Attack,' or the tumultuous sludge of 'Tourist Dream' insurmountably evidential in just how profoundly important the band was to the Australian circuit.

The confluence of Matt Norman's rhapsodic but lilting, melodic piano lines combined with Kraig Ludensky's responsive and tribal percussion and brushed drum strokes creates a wonderfully chaotic and evocative soundtrack. Matt Norman and Kraig Ludensky met by a chance encounter and, after a brief discussion, believed their diverse tastes in music could, perhaps, create a potent elixir for reflection, joy and madness.

Rebetika and free-improvised gypsy jazz. 'Four Kaminetti For Guitar Duet' is a partnership between two young Greek guitarists Giannis Arapis and Themis Vasiliou. All rights of the musicology and biological research belong to musicologist Sergei Kapiliev. Vasilaraps was a Greek composer of Ethiopian origin. He was an innovator composer of an unprecedented musical style, combining elements of the Greek rebetiko with atonality and 12-note technique. He was born on the 10th of May, 1905 in the suburb Skali (Ano Chora, Syros) with royal roots of the Aksumite kingdom, hence his name. In 1920, he moved to Athens where he got involved with the hangouts of rebetiko music. Soon, he became a virtuoso of the greek folk guitar, but without recording any of his music.
In 1935 he decided to study composition near the famous Dmitri Shostakovich in Moscow, where he settled for the rest of his life (as we can guess). From that moment he changed radically and got fully integrated into the artistic circles of the country and more generally in the local way of life. However, few years later, after he had composed several works (most of them for guitar ensembles) he got suffered from depression and due to this hard situation, he walked away from the musical foreground. From this point onwards we have zero information about the rest of his life and activities. Probably, he's not even alive for years now. A serious musicologic research lights on some authentic manuscripts, scores and rare recordings in reel and cylinder. A basic source comes from the grand daughter of an old friend of his. "We thought, it will be unthinkable not to perform these works for guitar and finally, we got together and recorded those" as Giannis and Themis, characteristically state. "His work allows us to designate it in two significant periods of his style : The first one which is thearly period and the second one which follows the late period of his work."

Heydarian currently resides in Tehran and has deep affection for the land of his upbringing. Featuring Behzad Varastev on daf on tracks A1, B1 and B3.

Manas - otherwise known as the duo of iconoclastic guitarist Tashi Dorji and drummer extraordinaire Thom Nguyen - have made tsunami-sized waves in the free jazz and improv scene with their numerous tape and LP releases (drawing praise and support from such luminaries and fellow-travelers as Bill Nace and Ben Chasny) and their face-melting live shows, including high profile touring with Godspeed! You Black Emperor. Back in the summer of 2019 they invited Naujawanan Baidar's N.R. Safi to sit in with them at a show organized at Fleetwoods, a self-proclaimed "rock and roll wedding chapel" in Dorji and Nguyen's current home of Asheville, North Carolina. Captured on tape was roughly thirty minutes of raw and pummeling improvisation, guitar-become-drum-become-guitar, building and collapsing over and over again like a collective howl from the depths of a necrotic capitalist empire in decay. Limited to 300 copies but only a handful available here.

'So Much Time' is the second solo release by Francesca Naibo and comes two years after her debut album 'Namatoulee' (Aut Records). This timeframe that separates the two records coincided with the pandemic period and so with a moment of deep personal reflection and artistic evolution of the musician.
Francesca Naibo looked at her past and her evolution in time and this led her to rescue old tapes she recorded at home with a cheap recorder when she was around 8 years old. In this way she could listen again to her voice, understand its sonic and personal essence and enter in contact and dialogue with it after almost 25 years. 'So Much Time' is therefore a work about time: an impossible time that permits a dialogue between the child and the adult, a distant time of faded memories that emerge from memory, a time that flows with different speeds, a compressed and dilated time in our lives, a time that comes back in phases, a layered time of experiences and events. The common presence of this theme is clearly visible in the tracklist: every piece has indeed a subtitle that specifies the typology of time the music is impregnated. Musically the work is based on improvisations realized in the recording studio. They were inspired to the thoughts and reflections on the theme of time and had a strong basis on the sonic features of the tapes used. These had been patiently selected before the recording days, in order to enter the studio with many tape fragments to juxtapose, superimpose, counterpose to music. In this way some of them introduce the tracks (like a sort of verbal comment), some others appear in the middle of instrumental passages, some others constitute a second instrument the guitar sets up a dialogue with. Dialogue, mutual listening and contrast draw a relationship between the three voices present in the album: the child voice, the adult voice and the guitar voice. These three entities don't always act simultaneously in the tracks but they are alternated during the narrative of 'So Much Time.' On side A we even listen to a dialogue only between the child and the guitar, sometimes only to the guitar but the echo of the voice from the past still resonates despite its physical absence. On side B the three voices alternate themselves through the tracks and bring the dialogue to its maximum complexity. Their intangible signs are present everywhere, thanks to an approach to sound by the musician that has been strongly influenced by her recent practice and study of Deep Listening (a listening method invented and promoted by composer Pauline Oliveros). Time is expressed also in the format of this album, because it will be printed on vinyl. Inside this material are hidden traces of the past derived from the tapes and traces of the present derived from digital audio. They will be impressed on an object that has never been part of the musician's childhood but it possesses a symbolism in its form and his movement that are strictly connected to the slow and continuous passing of time.
Francesca Naibo uses an archtop guitar, various objects (so-called "preparations"), effects (delay, fuzz, sound retainer, ring modulator) and her voice. The musician comes from the world of classical music and this has a strong echo in the intense research for a mixture of the acoustic and electric sound of her instrument. Francesca deeply investigates sound with the purpose of going beyond the limits of the traditional instrument (hence the use of objects, noises, but also unusual tunings, that allow an expansion of the register), but at the same time trying to maintain her fingers solidly on a timber quality that is typically guitaristic. The album comes with engaging graphics by Atharwa Deshingkar that includes the texts and photos of the artist as a kid and adult.

Joe D. Nelson (aka Jody Nelson) trades in a perverse Americana articulated via a novelist's eye for detail, a poet's love of the liminal, playful surrealism, and sci-fi morality. His characters are of this place yet are utterly mystified by their trappings. Some of them are amphibious. Others are lost to circumstance. There are cowboys confused by horses. A man in a "tap water suit." Nelson cut his songwriting teeth via his former outfit, Through The Sparks, a Birmingham, Alabama garage band. With his solo debut, 'Iced Cherries,' Nelson inverts his past techniques by abandoning electric guitars and ProTools in favor of deft fingerpicking on an acoustic guitar and recording live to analog tape. As for influences, one might hear shades of Bruce Cockburn, whom he recently covered on the latest volume of 'Imaginational Anthem' on Tompkins Square. More often than not, 'Iced Cherries' sounds like an unholy alliance of Fred Neil, Joe Pass, Thomas Pynchon, and David Berman. At its core, 'Iced Cherries' is a deconstruction of singer-songwriter tropes. He wrote a song in every key - and each of those songs slyly slaughters a sacred cow musically or lyrically. Sometimes both. Even the album cover is a wink. But these are folk songs in that all folk songs are of their time - and these are very weird times.

SAURE ADLER - SAURE ADLER
Säure Adler was founded back in 2012 in the psychedelic city of Poznan, Poland, by A.J. Kaufmann (voice, acoustic guitar, songwriter) and Kacper Wojaczek (keyboards). The duet played psychedelic folk with poetic lyrics, releasing material independently on bandcamp, performing gigs wherever possible.
In 2015 Kacper Wojaczek left, being replaced by Radu Rusanu (keyboards, electric guitar, bass guitar). The band switched directions into a more full-on krautrock/psychedelic rock sound continuing releasing new materials on Bandcamp. In 2016 Radu Rusanu was replaced by Luna Lenina (bass guitar, drum machines), and the band re-located to London. The new line-up recorded the 'Street Dada Brutalismus' album, which is still available on the band's Bandcamp site. In 2018 Säure Adler joined the German netlabel Aumega Project, Germany's leading label for krautrock and psychedelic music and atmospheres, releasing among others the 'Pilzmusik' album in early 2019.
In 2019 A.J. tried to get the band back to their roots with various sessions in limited line-ups (duets), and the sessions brought the "acid eagle" back to their hometown of Poznan with new, highly psychoactive sounds. The band is still active, releasing material on Bandcamp, and now, thanks to Ramble Records, their debut album titled simply 'Säure Adler' appears on vinyl.

Recorded on a cellphone from March - September 2021, 'Hail Star Of The Sea!' is equal parts composed and improvised. A sonic pilgrimage of plucked and bowed guitars, embroidered with bells, bowls, and rattling rosaries, drenched in droning organ and harmonium. These tones are accompanied by the shrieking of a scraped and attacked untuned violin, set to field recordings of crashing waves, radio transmissions, unlocking doors, footsteps, alarms, barking dogs, gathering storms, falling rain, struck matches and rising flames, creaking floorboards and chairs, monkeys chattering in the trees with insects and cicadas singing in the cold night air, and a grove full of birds greeting the rising sun. The journey is dense, but rewarding." Written, performed, recorded and mixed by William Graham Randles. Instruments: acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, recorder, violin, harmonium, organ, singing bowl, Tibetan tingsha, khartal, bells, two-string cardboard box dulcimer, piano strings, and rosaries.

We unveiled our musical stories through drones and phrasing dialogues as one binding unit. The session went so well that we decided to play as a trio again the following evening at the Firestone Baars Chapel opening for Yellow Eyes and here we present this recording on vinyl for Ramble Records." This first meeting as a trio was fueled by the masterful weaving and waving saxophone densities of Patrick Shiroishi, the glistening stampede of guitar by Chaz Prymek, followed by a textural nudge of drums by Thom Nguyen.

Reid Karris is a musician and composer from Chicago, Illinois focusing on free improvisation and noise using prepared guitar, homemade instruments and percussion. The Man From Atlantis is the moniker for Australian musician Mike Sill and is an extension of ideas formulated while playing in '90s art rock
band Ray Of Creation. His compositions incorporate fingerpicking, blues, acid folk, free improv, raga to heavy psych. Beginning in mid 2020 Reid started a project where he recorded short improvisations for skatchboxes and metal percussion and then sent them to people around the world to overdub their parts. The idea was to create a series of improvised duo albums involving people he had not met in real life and who lived in different geographical areas.
Collaborations have been made with people from Texas, France, Missouri, Minnesota, Indiana, Australia and Germany, with more to come.
