ASTRAL MAGIC - LORDS OF SPACE
Astral Magic is a psychedelic music project by Santtu Laakso from Finland. He used to play bass and Moog in space rock band Dark Sun (started in 1991) and is also known as DJ Astro. If you went to Roadburn in between 2007 and 2014 you have probably heard him play some mind-blowing sounds there with the legendary Kozmik Ken (R.I.P.). 'Lords Of Space' is certainly a heavy, psychedelic space rock album following in the footsteps of 'Visions Of Infinity,' that was released on LP and CD on Space Rock Productions in 2021. This time in addition to
vocals, bass and plenty of synths Santtu played most of the guitars by himself. Guest guitarists include doom metal legend Kimi Kärki (ex-Revered Bizarre, Lord Vicar, E-musikgruppe Lux Ohr etc.), UK space rocker Vince Cory (ex-Psychedelic Warlords, Sonic Trip Project etc.) and US multi-instrumentalist Jay Tausig (ex-Chrome etc.), who plays drums on all the tracks as well. The CD version also includes the single 'Child Of The
Wild'/'The Undead' where the guitars are delivered by Finnish metal/hard rock guitarist Mikael Haavisto (ex-Ranger, Chalise). The album was mastered by Scott "Dr. Space" Heller and the cover art is done by Dale Simpson. Astral Magic was started in March 2020 to make all kinds of psychedelic, trippy music. As a long-time music collector and writer (Psychotropic Zone, Aural Innovations, Bad Acid, Astral Zone etc.) Santtu has lots
of musician friends all over the world and he has invited many of them to take part in the Astral Magic recordings. He has been very productive and around 300 tracks have been created so far. For fans of Hawkwind, Hawklords, Nik Turner, Robert Calvert, Chrome, Helios Creed, Monster Magnet, Farflung, Ecstatic Vision. Conjuring a dark, excessive sound with unfettered guitar, pummelling drum rolls and Ayari growling and grumbling over the top, this sole LP from 1971 is culled from different permutating sessions, with plenty of audio freakery and extreme effects from Jean-Pierre Massiera; The Hendrix cover 'Cross Town Traffic' is rendered with love, despite Ayari's hefty accent.

Their journey started a long time ago, some say on Saturn, some say in the subconscious of the human psyche, coming out in different manners through the ages, channelled by mystics, witch doctors, shamans, free thinkers, free spirits. But we do know that what has become Codex Serafini travelled here from their home world on Enceladus in 2019 and crash landed into the music scene of Sussex. Invoking many styles of psychedelic rock from the recent human musical history to open the minds of their human audience to the other world, and higher plane. After releasing two EP's, 'Serpents Of Enceladus' in 2020 and 'Invisible Landscape' in 2021 Codex Serafini embarked on their most immersive journey so far creating what would become 'The Imprecation Of Anima' an exploration of the self, the duality of the human existence. The album is heavy, much heavier than their previous output and the albums longest song, 'Animus In Decay' is longer than either of the bands previous EP's. It snakes and weaves an epic motif through the wilderness of the sometimes barren lands of the unconsciousness, focusing the mind with it's almost heavy metal mantra and using this to open up the third eye to the realisation of our mortal existence. The whole album is a pilgrimage into ones inner self and it's relationship with it's own shadow in it's truest form, two parts coming together as a whole.

Formed in 1966, The Electric Prunes had a novel approach to being a band: deciding to be a recording unit rather than a live performance band. They discovered their signature sound-reverb-drenched, beautifully chaotic garage pop and released one of the most fantastic, fuzzed-out singles of all time, 'I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night.' Guitar effects drip and splatter throughout (the band had landed an endorsement deal with Vox, who were the leaders in wild effects pedals at that time), and they laid into the material with brute force (and the occasional gentle touch). Cut from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray. Featured as the first track on the legendary influential '60s garage music compilation 'Nuggets.'

Mark Enbatta's recording career started in 1982 with The Vietnam Veterans. Although an official split was declared in 1987, the members of the band never stopped working together under various names like The Curanderos, The Late Veterans, The Veterans, The Vietnam Chain, The Smiling Droopies, The Gitanes or even on solo projects. By the way, the audience never stopped calling them The Vietnam Veterans... There was nothing you could do about it! When Lucas Trouble died in 2016, Mark officially declared they wouldn't use the original band's name anymore. Lucas wasn't an original member but he was Mark's friend and partner in crime since the early days. The further psychedelic adventures of The Vietnam Veterans will now happen as The Tribe. Same singer/songwriter, two former members of the VV's and a new bassist. The Tribe's first album is maybe darker than what people could expect but Mark wrote it during Lucas Trouble's agony. Five years after 'A Fistful Of Love', here is another trip inside haunted human minds. Some bad trips give special emotions.

FIELDS - CONTRASTS: URBAN ROAD TO COUNTRY PEACE
Recorded at CBS's studios in Theobald Street in 1972, Graham Field and ex-King Crimson drummer Andy McCulloch were joined by new recruit Frank Farrell, replacing Alan Barry who'd departed to pursue a solo career. Frank had a pleasant voice and was also a solid bass player. The change in personnel brought a subtle but important change to the way Field approached his role within the group. "With Frank and Andy I was working with two professionals that were absolutely rock solid." Although Field himself had been signed to a three-album deal, when CBS changed the management structure they weren't interested in even listening to the follow-up, never mind taking up the option of a third release. While Andy McCulloch went on to join Greenslade, Frank Farrell enjoyed songwriting success with Leo Sayer before dying at the tragically early age of 50 in 1997. For his part, Field, disillusioned by his treatment, left the music business for some time before immersing himself in the
live arts and festival programming. The tapes for the second album by Fields languished in the archives and gathered dust and for but for a conversation with his children, they might well have stayed there yet instead of finding an audience in the 21st Century some 44 years after their recording. GREEN PAJAMAS - PHANTOM LAKE: NORTHERN GOTHIC 3 (2LP)
'Phantom Lake: Northern Gothic 3' is the final installment of the trilogy which began in 2002 with 'Northern Gothic' (Camera Obscura). It was followed up by, 'Box Of Secrets: Northern Gothic 2' (Hidden Agenda) in 2007. When Laura Weller and Jeff Kelly were thinking about where their next project might go, Laura introduced the idea of writing songs inspired by childhood. She had grown up in a neighborhood called Phantom Lake, memories of which eventually inspired four songs on this record. Jeff also drew from youth, remembering trips to Lost Lake, about twelve miles out of Shelton, Washington, where relatives had a cabin, as well as many vacations to the Washington coast over the years. Eric Lichter remembers a family from his past in the song, 'The Rosebergs,' about a catastrophic tsunami roaring in off of the Pacific. These are the same landscapes that populated many of the songs on the two previous 'Northern Gothic' albums. The grey skies, the endless evergreens, the "black and blue moon" and "a thousand crows" which hang over small lakeside or West Coast towns populated by the lonesome, the unlucky-in-loves and even a few slightly eerie children. This is a dark album. It is about obsession and sorrow and murder and too much whisky. The characters that permeate these songs exist in the shadows, often in the margins of society. These lost souls of the northern gothic world of Phantom Lake remind us of what it is to be human.

Keyboard player Roberto Carlotto from Varese, whose nickname was Hunka Munka, began playing since his childhood, though his musical career was seriously compromised by an aircraft accident that caused him some heavy injuries. His beginnings as a professional musician took him to play in England, Germany and Switzerland, where he even had the chance of supporting such artists like Rod Stewart and Colosseum. In Italy he had previously played with Big 66, I Cuccioli and later with Ivan Graziani (Anonima Sound 1970), before entering a solo career starting with a single in 1971. As a solo artist, Carlotto was easily recognized by his very good technical quality and the high level of his equipment, that included an incredible number of different keyboards and even the early examples of tape drum machines. His only solo album, 'Dedicato A Giovanna G.', with its outrageous cover, is a soft-prog album, obviously dominated by Hunka's keyboards (especially his self-customized Hammond organ) and odd tremolo voice resembling Demis Roussos or Bee Gees. Among the backing musicians were drummer Nunzio "Cucciolo" Favia from Osage Tribe and guitarist Ivan Graziani.
After the album release Carlotto joined Dik Dik in 1973, again with drummer Cucciolo playing with him too later as Carlotto & Cucciolo. He has also presumably released an electronic album in 1984, 'Promise Of Love' (Atlantide AMX 12003), under the name Karl Otto. In 2011 Roberto Carlotto joined the reformed Analogy playing with them many concerts. In the early 2000s Roberto Carlotto started a collaboration with keyboardist Joey Mauro, talented user and repairer of vintage keyboards; together they revitalized the Hunka Munka name... and finally they released an inspired album called 'Foreste Interstellari' in which Carlotto writes lyrics, plays keyboards and sings lead. Joey Mauro plays keyboards as well and writes music together with Mr. Hunka Munka.

'Les Idoles' is a mythical record of sixties psyche rock prefiguring punk. A work which in style had no equivalent in France at the time. Thanks to the performance of the Rollsticks, a rock band created from scratch with musicians from different musical worlds, to accompany the erratic vocalizations of actors Pierre Clémenti, Bulle Ogier and Jean Pierre Kalfon. The band consists of Patrick Greussay (who became part of Calcium) on the drums and guitars, Stephane Vilar (who became part of Calcium, PLVG), Didier Léon (future accomplice of Barney Wilen), Didier Malherbe (who became part of Gong and Clearlight amongst other bands), Jacques Zins (who became part of Calcium) and with the participation of Yvan Julien (jazzman composer trumpeter and conductor) and Michel Portal (jazzman composer and saxophonist). The recording of this album is different from the album 'Les Idoles' published in 1967 under the reference CBS 62812, recorded in June 1966 in Barclay studios. The record company needed to make the record when the film was released to have the music recorded six months in advance, as it was practiced at the time. The unreleased recording offered today was made during the shooting of the film, in 1967 at the Davout Studio to use in the film.
During these sessions, the musicians really knew the repertoire inside out and the music is more intense, more powerful, which makes it very interesting. Made from master tapes found in the archives, this new album with the exception of 'Et Floc C'est La Tasse' and 'Chanson De L'Archevêque,' dispensable titles whose tapes have been definitively lost, includes practically the same titles as the 1967 album, but in different interpretations to which unreleased instrumentals have been added.

by solo sets from Suzuki and Tomo, which served as a kind of introduction, of sorts, to the broader aesthetic visions of two of the musicians on 'Suikyo.'

Melting Clock is a musical project born in the Faculty of Physics, University of Genoa, in 2001. At the time the group's aim, which brought together experienced musicians and beginners, was sheer amusement and musical growth, pursued through the covering of songs by more and less known bands of the progressive rock scene. Over the years the pieces studied have influenced Melting Clock's sound: much attention has been paid to some of the most interesting contemporary bands such as Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Opeth, Ayreon, without however neglecting milestones that have made the history of the progressive genre like Pink Floyd, Genesis and PFM. Melting Clock have undergone many line up changes: alongside the four founding members Sandro Amadei (keyboards and vocals), Stefano Amadei (guitars), Alessandro Bosca (bass guitar) and Francesco Fiorito (drums), Simone Caffè (guitars) and Emanuela Vedana (vocals) more recently joined the band. The skills acquired and the renewed enthusiasm led to the decision to devote to the composing of original music. Melting Clock's style is characterized by evocative and powerful sounds, which aim at immediately capturing the listener - without giving up elements of complexity - and conveying a strong emotional charge. Lyrics are in their mother tongue, Italian. They fully follow the spirit of progressive music in our free approach to writing and interest in contamination from the most diverse genres.

Of the plethora of touted "private press hard rock monsters" out there, very few live up to the swaggering riff-fury of west coast blasters Oda. Commonly known as the 'Black Album,' the first clobbering platter by the quartet was released on their own tiny Loud Phonograph Records imprint and now commands large sums - but is actually worth the heavy hype. The band naturally centered around Randy Oda, a multi-talented ax shredder and keyboardist, and the lineup was filled out by his brother Kevin on drum assault, Art Pantoja on lead bellows and rhythm guitar, and galloping bassist Kyle Schneider. The Oda brothers were born in Alameda County, California, attending Kennedy High School in Richmond, and started the band while still teenagers at the beginning of the '70s. Oda was influenced by hard UK rockers like Deep Purple, Zep, Free, and the Who, and they gigged all over the Bay Area, with Randy garnering comparisons to Jeff Beck's molten six-string mastery. Their 1971 self-titled LP fully displays their blistering talents, but despite some local airplay on KSAN radio, the band packed it in by '73. This would not be the end of the Oda story, as Randy joined CCR's Tom Fogerty in the outfit Ruby afterwards, laying down his licks on two LPs that flirted with the mainstream, while staying true to his highly electric guitar muse. In 1983, Oda actually reformed for one more LP on Loud Phonograph, entitled 'Power Of Love.' The comeback album delves a little deeper into radio friendly power pop, which makes sense, as in '82 Oda co-wrote 'Think I'm In Love' with Eddie Money (which, let's face it, is Money's best song by like a mile). Randy would also collaborate with Fogerty as a duo, and the posthumous 'Sidekicks' album (released after Fogerty passed) listed the clearly-integral Randy Oda as "arranger, composer, guitar (acoustic), guitar (electric), keyboards, primary artist, and producer." In the 2000s, Randy would start another band with his brother called Opo which means "to lay a foundation" in Hawaiian, and Oda would reform to play a benefit in 2015 along with other obscure and heady/heavy Bay Area rockers like Savage Resurrection and Country Weather (some live footage of the event shows the band still rocking hard). At last, Riding Easy is legitimately reissuing Oda's first smoking, gargantuan LP with bonus tracks, so crank this one up in your '70s Camaro with the windows open, and some dirt weed joints a-blazin'.

The Neapolitan singer Gigi Pascal (real name Giancarlo D'Auria) had a long career as soloist in the melodic pop field, with some singles dating from the end of the sixties. As many others he was attracted by the newly born rock groups of the early '70s, and assembled one with the odd name Pop Compagnia Meccanica. This group had a similar story to Fabio Celi & Gli Infermieri, also from Naples, as they released an album in 1973 that sounds like it had been recorded three or four years earlier. Only the first names are known of the other musicians playing with Pascal, the only known member was drummer Fulvio Marzocchella, that played with pop artists such as Umberto Bindi, Nico Fidenco, Patty Pravo and Orietta Berti. 'Debut' is a very short album (eight songs for around 26 minutes) with the organ as main instrument and, where Fabio Celi's album had frantic vocals, this has a softer, more relaxed voice that owes much to the melodic Italian pop of the '60s, but always well mixed with the band's sound. The music has some nice classical influences, like in the instrumental 'Fuga In Si Minore,' or 'Crescente' and the long 'Un Concerto' with a very good and complex arrangement, but sometime the sixties sound is more evident, like in the opening 'La Tua Voce.' Gigi Pascal released two more singles in 1975, one of them still with the name of Pop Compagnia Meccanica. In the '80s he released singles and LP's under the nicknames Jaco D. and Jaco.

Polyfeen spread their wings in the psychedelic fuzz and space echo universe and is musically anchored in the progressive psychedelic rock genre. The song writing on the album is centered around the frontman, lead singer and bass player Michael Stanley and the charismatic Hammond organist and virtuosi Per Hugo Rotboll, constantly challenging the psychedelic genre, moving from ear hangers lead by the excellently played acoustic and electric guitars by guitarist Torsten Lefmann accompanied by Stanley's intense lead vocals to an instrumental synthesizer high paced dance song with a psychedelic twist that will make any listener indulged to the tough beat by drummer Karsten "Mons" Mansa. The quartet even features the grand piano in a melodic song which especially with Stanley piano playing and lead vocal leads you in direction of the Lennon solo period from the early '70s. The album features backwards guitars, coral sitar, heavy bass fuzz and a number of '70s analogue synthesizers. You will be taken back to the early '70s with a modern twist in a psychedelic universe with extensive guitar and Hammond organ solos. Throughout the album the lyrics are focused round the unrealized potential in all humans regardless of origin.

Part 2: 'RED STAR':
'The Gate Of Orion' is the subsequent coming of other alien travelers who depart from Orion. By opening portals they enter our world. 'Remembering Betelgeuse' is the alien memory of the music brought by the star of Betelgeuse. 'The Spiral' is the desire for genetic manipulation of aliens on Earth's populations, to create a slave. But another alien, pro life race intervenes in the aims of the first and manages to create the divine man, destroying the previous plan. 'Universal Union' is the new man connected to the primordial essence. This new man enters a dimension from which he started.

Created at home on a Tascam 4-Track Portastudio, the recording features few frills and is all the better for it. The Trance Dimensionals band was formed by English musician Steve Hillman in 2016. Steve had been making electronic sounds with his audio generator since the early 1970s, when as a teenager he was influenced by Tangerine Dream, Hawkwind and Gong. In the 1980s, as a keyboard player and guitarist, he was part of the then underground electronic music scene in the UK and in the 1990s he was signed to the progressive rock
music label Cyclops Records who released four albums of his prog and space rock instrumental music. Steve has also collaborated with a variety of musicians around the world including the Greek synthesist Thaneco and with members of various orchestras, including the flute player with the
world famous London Symphony Orchestra. In 2016 Steve met with the legendary Nik Turner, a founder member of the space rock group Hawkwind, and they discussed working on an album
together. Steve had already written enough material for an album and he decided to form the Trance Dimensionals band as a way of presenting the new material with Nik fronting the band. Some of the tracks Steve wrote specifically for Nik, in particular 'Thunder Rider Invocation' and 'Sekhmet,' which purposefully harkens back to Nik's Egyptian themed album from 1978 called 'Xitintoday.' At the time Steve was also a member of a prog rock band called Ra Rising and he asked their drummer Dai Rees and bassist Rob Andrews to join the band. Angel Flame, the dancer in Nik's Space Ritual and The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, also agreed to join and soon after Dave Anderson,
who had played bass in the German band Amon Düül II, the Groundhogs and on Hawkwind's 1971 album 'In Search Of Space' also came onboard. In fact Dave plays on the new arrangement on the album of the song he wrote with Nik called 'Children Of The Sun,' that first appeared on 'In Search Of Space.' Another veteran of Hawkwind, Mr Dibs also joins on the track 'Taken To The Limit.' The band had their debut live performance in June 2018 at the Sonic Rock Festival in Worcestershire, England. 3-sided LP version.

YOURI KUN - RENOIR OF THE TOYS
'Renoir Of The Toys' is a deep dive into the world of Youri Kun, the nom de plume of Japanese guitarist, singer and
songwriter Hiroshi Nar. It follows a similar compilation,
'Unheld Ball,' released in 2022 on Japanese label Inundow; like that album, 'Renoir Of The Toys' draws from the rich catalogue
of outsider psych-garage and rock recorded by Youri Kun over the past two decades. Deeply wired into the history of Japanese underground music, Nar was a founding member of legendary
'70s outfit Datetenryu, and a member of both Brain Police (Zuno Keisatsu) and Les Ralllizes Dénudés (Hadaka No Rallizes), appearing on the latter's '77 Live.' After going to ground during the 1980s, Nar started making music with Niplets in the mid-'90s, and releasing music at a prolific pace in 2000 - an excellent run of (some times archival) CDrs on the Hello Goodbye Studio label, both solo, and with his groups Molls, Niplets and Port Cuss; an album on P.S.F. by Jokers, where he was joined by fellow Rallizes member Yokai Takahashi, and drummer Toshiaki Ishizuka (Brain Police, Vajra, Cinorama, etc.); and sixteen albums (and counting) as Youri Kun, for labels Gyunne Cassette, Inundow, and Hören. He's also fallen in with the Acid Mothers Temple crowd, guesting on a few of their albums, and recording a live set with Kawabata Makoto's Nishinihon trio. All Nar's music shares a deceptive primitivism; it moves with the simplicity of the best 1960s garage punk, but its edges are blurred and stretched, allowing for all kinds of weird, elliptical, and psychedelic moves to happen in its margins. His guitar playing on songs like 'Kakunin' (from 2011's 'Yamaimo Boogie') shimmies and slurs magnificently; 'Kurokami,' from 2012's 'Su,' has clanking six strings scrawling over loose, spaced-out synth; there are clunky psychobilly moves ('Oshiro No Ninjya'), spirited rave-ups for rattling organ and sputtering guitar ('Totsugeki'), and some lovely, drowsy, melancholy moments ('Sora'). The constant throughout is Nar's blues-blurred, drawling voice, as unique a tool as the non-idiomatic speak-sing styles of solo Syd Barrett, Jad Fair, or Dave E. McManus. There are also three Les Rallizes Dénudés covers here, where Nar locates the pop genius at the heart of songs like 'Shiroi Yoru' and amplifies this with his simple garage-reverential take on things. 'Renoir Of The Toys'
is yet more evidence that Hiroshi Nar was, and is, one of Japan's musical visionaries, a lonesome voice dedicated to a singular, streamlined vision, one that's in eternal pursuit of the joy and kicks at the heart of rock'n'roll, and a
reminder of what a great, unpretentious rock'n'roller truly should be.

To mark its 30 year anniversary Infinite Fog are beyond proud to present an expanded, fully remastered re-release of this fan favourite available for the first time ever in its entirety on vinyl with 10 rare and mostly unreleased tracks and alternative versions from the period added as a bonus to a luxurious 3LP set. 'Love's Secret Domain' contains among its many highlights the Lynchian William Blake tribute of its title track and the intoxicating single 'Windowpane', original versions of the later Coil live staple 'Teenage Lightning' and the majestically warped classicisms of 'Chaostrophy'. Marc Almond guests on the typhonian 'Titan Arch' and This Heat's Charles Hayward provides some amazing drum stylings. This album is Coil pushing their sound ideas and probably their sanity to their very limits. Beyond the iconic Steven Stapleton cover art here reproduced in unseen definition the doors of perception still open wide for both long-term Coil aficionados and new-comers to this supremely innovative release to explore unknown depths. 'The New Backwards' was conceived by Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson in 2007, revisiting stray tracks which hadn't seemed to gel with the material he had chosen for the more somber 'The Ape Of Naples' from 2005, Coil's initial posthumous release, a sort of requiem and a kiss-goodbye to his then recently deceased partner John Balance. Significantly different to its sister release, this album collects the brilliantly chaotic and outrageously rhythmic material from the original sessions for the album that was begun as early as 1993 and had originally been conceptualised as the follow-up to 'Love's Secret Domain'. These songs are as diverse and wild as the places they originated from, partly infamously spawned in Sharon Tate's former home in the Hollywood Hills, the Nine Inch Nails home base in New Orleans and London's Swanyard, remixed and restructured with the help of long-term friend Danny Hyde in Thailand, this collection has its own unique flow and an atmosphere not found on any other Coil release. Both 'AYOR' and 'Backwards' had, by the time the album was first released, already become favorites in Coil's manic live performances. Some of the other tracks had only leaked in demo versions and are here presented updated and polished as Christopherson and Hyde intended them to be heard. It is interesting to consider Balance's vocal contributions, too. Whilst on the albums Coil did release at the time this material was first put aside ('Black Light District' and 'ElpH') his voice is all but absent, his vocal performances and his lyric writing here are arguably more closely indebted to the previous 'Love's Secret Domain' era, especially the epic 'Copacaballa' is noteworthy in that respect. 'The New Backwards' effectively became the final official Coil studio release of all new material whilst Peter was still alive and is here presented for the first time fully supervised by Danny Hyde, its co-creator. The stunning cover uses a detail from artist Ian Johnstone's 'Cubic Raven' painting, licensed from the estate of IJ. It is high time to rediscover this timeless album with the Infinite Fog release boasting eight further tracks of previously unheard material from the same sessions, rough working stages and surprising remixes which will surely delight the dedicated Coil archaeologists, as they shine yet another light on the creative process and on what could have been.

In its immediate accessibility it is somewhat reminiscent of Coil's mid-1980s classic 'Horse Rotorvator' sharing that album's wild variety of sounds and styles as well as its overriding sombre mood. Originally released in 2005 and in many ways the band's ultimate swan song, it is now considered one of the go-to albums for introducing new listeners to the unparalleled magick of Coil. Compiled and released by Peter Christopherson and Danny Hyde one year after Jhonn Balance's tragic deadly fall, it includes reworkings of the live favourite 'Amethyst Deceivers' and 'Love Secret's Domain''s 'Teenage Lightning' as well as several songs originally intended for the ill-fated 'Backwards' album like the haunting and preminiscent 'Fire Of The Mind' and the superb 'Amber Rain.' Other tracks were created using unfinished song ideas from around 'Backwards,' sampling tiny bits of Balance's live vocals from songs only ever performed in concert once like 'Triple Sun.' Using the lyrics of the theme tune for the 1970s BBC sit com series 'Are You Being Served?' for the unbelievably haunting 'Going Up,' this album's final track and the last song Coil ever performed live, is maybe the most poignant example of Balance's and Christopherson's method of turning base matter into pure sound gold, and like the title of the album, derived from an imaginary adult video an equally fine example of the often underappreciated humour of the boys. Christopherson with the help of long-term sound wizard Danny Hyde and using some of the talent of Coil touring members managed to craft an album which feels and flows like a true Coil classic. The Infinite Fog version is the third Coil record receiving the fully remastered and enhanced 3LP/2CD treatment supervised by Danny Hyde. All of the original material has again been carefully and sympathetically remastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Jessica Thompson who has been previously lauded for her splendid job on its sister release 'The New Backwards.' Coil fans old and new will be thrilled over the inclusion of more than an hour's worth of 9 rare and largely unheard bonus tracks from Danny's vaults completing the set. The astounding design of the original box-set release is restored for the gatefold 3LP sleeve using the fully-licensed artwork by Ian Johnstone (making it easy to differentiate this new vinyl version from previous un-sanctioned LP releases using poor reproductions of the original CD art for the front cover). While the music maintains a strong percussive quality, vocals make only occasional appearances throughout the tracks. It marks a departure from the artist's previous abrupt
transitions, favoring a more concentrated and steady approach to the music. Sounds are allowed to linger for extended durations, providing a deeper listening experience. The beats take a backseat this time, although they remain a significant part of the musical tapestry. Notably, track 9 is completely beatless, showcasing the artist's ability to create dramatic and twisted sonic landscapes with looped and distorted vocal excerpts. The tracks featured on 'Kashmiri Queens' maintain a clean and polished sound, allowing the instrumentation and composition to shine. The third track weaves together drums, bells, a female singer, and enigmatic extended tones to create a compelling sonic journey. Track 4 introduces a drum-loop with a sussurus element and a backwards orchestral loop, culminating in an unexpected rhythm shift. Separated from both its reputation and its sleeve art, the music of Muslimgauze explores the relationship of visual sensations -space, colour, depth, illusion- to the listening experience. The music on 'Maroon' is dub-like inspired techno music, laid back with voices appearing randomly in the mix. Listeners who know much of anything about Bryn Jones' work as Muslimgauze know that he was prolific in both his work and 'Muhammadunize' has what could be called a classic feel to it, with a very familiar blend of drones, string instruments, and synths, and varying percussion/break-beat patterns, in turn mixed with a number of hard-to-catch vocal samples. It's a formula used many times in the past by Jones, yet somehow he still manages to keep things just fresh enough, investing songs like the first and second 'Khalifate' and especially both slamming versions of 'Imad Akel' with enough unexpected touches. He incorporates the basic power of his work in the tracks as well, with both beauty and a nervy, hard-to-define tension as the songs progress. The sound palette of 'Muhammadunize' is very similar to his ambient-techno albums such as 'Mullah Said' and 'Gun Aramaic', down to the rhythms and the trademark tanpura drones and keys in C minor. The difference is that it's a bit more aggressive and faster-paced than the aforementioned albums, thus utilising a similar dark atmosphere to a more immediate and in-your-face effect, especially as noted by the drum-kit urban-sounding pulse of 'Imad Akel', one of the high points on this album. However, a favorite track here is the closer 'Fatah Guerrilla' (also title track of the whole triple album), featuring a rapid echoed rhythm along with a barrage of percussion popping up and echoing every so often, sounding like they're flying through the room at a quick pace; the piece also features a beautiful flute melody which combines with the busy rhythm section in an interesting way. Recorded and mixed at Abraham Mosque, Manchester 1996. Limited to 1000 copies.

MUSLIMGAUZE - TURN ON ARABIC AMERICAN RADIO (2LP)
The relationship between Bryn Jones' music as Muslimgauze and the track/album titles he would provide (sometimes
right on the tapes he would send in for release, but often determined later, sometimes even giving two different pieces
months apart the same title, accidentally or not) has always been a little mysterious. Jones himself can no longer be
asked, and as we continue to investigate the swathes of material he provided, you hit sources like the DAT or DATs that
make up the contents of this double LP 'Turn On Arab American Radio.' Nine tracks, the first LP/four tracks titled
'Turn On Arab American Radio,' and the other LP/five tracks labelled only 'Arab American Radio.' None of them sound
particularly radio-esque, although given the simultaneous vastness and ornate focus of Jones' Muslimgauze work that
gap between name and sound is far from atypical. Instead here the de rigeur percussion loops that underpin this particular set of tracks, while occasionally clipping into the fierce distortion that Jones either loved to use or couldn't get away from, steer away from both the more consistent application of that distortion as well as the Middle Eastern and Asian influences he often used. It'd be a stretch to call anything here basic boom-bap production but they come closer to it than a lot of Muslimgauze production. And while those loops are, as always prominent, they're not actually the focus; settling into steady vamps as structures for Jones to pursue an extended and often more gentle exploration of the other sample sources he has here. There are stringed instruments, the sound of water, but most prominently or strikingly the human voice. Nothing is in English but tone and the occasional word ("familia", "passport") still provide guides. There are ululations, snatches of melody; but most often speech, dialogue, often tense and harried sounding. Is this what Jones was thinking of or referring to with his 'Arab American Radio'? As with so many other questions about Muslimgauze, we'll never know the answer to that one. (Most pertinently in this case we might wonder who appears here, and what the context of these recordings is. But Jones never provided that with his submissions.) Here, even though those inexorable loops pound on, indefatigable, that emphasis on some of the people Jones chooses lends a measured gentleness to much of 'Turn On Arab American Radio,' at least within the context of his body of work. The last thing you hear at the end of the second LP is one last question from one of the many speakers on this peculiar Muslimgauze radio, echoed away into infinity. We may never have answers, but those
questions continue to resonate. Limited to 1000 copies.

The paths of Steve Potts and Jobic Le Masson have crossed frequently since the beginning of the 21st century, through collaborations with many artists. They have performed together regularly for the past ten years, namely in a quartet with John Betsch and Peter Giron. Have you heard of the Nurse With Wound List? If you are a fan of creative-experimental-unlikely music, certainly. You would therefore be aware that amongst the recommendations that
Steven Stapleton slipped into the first album of his group Nurse With Wound, were to be found a few restless frogs: Jef Gilson, Luc Ferrari, Jacques Thollot, Urban Sax, Horde
Catalytique and last... ...but not least Jean-Jacques Birgé
and Francis Gorgé. Stapleton admired their album 'Défense De.' The two Frenchmen just had to conceive of a fabulous precursor to the Channel tunnel (check out the inside of the record, you'll see) to enable Stapleton to come to France in 1980. The Englishman was looking for contributions to a compilation to be released on his United Dairies label that he had created with
John Fothergill, and he naturally called on Birgé and Gorgé, who were then playing with Bernard Vitet in Un Drame Musical Instantané. It was a done deal and the compilation would be named 'In Fractured Silence.' Alongside Nurse With Wound and Un Drame Musical Instantané, could be heard Hélène Sage (whom Birgé introduced to Stapleton) and Sema, a project from the
experimental British musician Robert Haigh who had participated in key records in the Nurse With Wound discography, such as 'Homotopy To Marie' and 'Spiral Insana.' The curtain is raised and it is Un Drame Musical Instantané who start the ball rolling. Mystery abounds; synthesisers lurk, percussion clatters and the sounds (creaks, whistles, vocal insertions...) fire in all directions. For the piano, it's a debacle, the
Drame won, Hélène Sage can take over. Heading up a quintette including Gorgé and Vitet, she creates a cushioned chamber
music with strings and many silences. On the B side, it's the other side of the Channel. Sema's piano first off, which dares everything, even melody, before spilling out its darkest ideas in a raucous requiem. Finally, Stapleton appears, delving into his collection of female voices to devote himself to an iconoclastic transformation and concoct a song which collapses under the assault like Marianne at Agincourt. After having listened to 'In Fractured Silence,' you will simply have to choose sides.
