Limited copies, be fast! This is a repress of Hibushibire's third album made for their 2024 UK tour with Black Helium. Pressed on 'glass clear' vinyl with cyan and yellow splatter to complement the artwork. The cover art and insert have also had a slight colour tweak to give them a more blueish vibe. Osaka based psych-rock three piece Hibushibire return after a long break, with a new line up and a stunning third album. Following the successes of their debut album 'Freak Out Orgasm!' (2017), the follow up 'Turn On, Tune In, Freak Out' (2019) and two very well received UK tours. The band headed home to Osaka, Japan and then, the pandemic hit. During this downtime, guitarist/vocalist Changchang decided to create a new power trio. Enter Tetsuji Toyoda (bass/vocals) and Aoi Hama (drums/vocals). The new trio have spent the last three years writing new music, playing live and honing their sound in Japan, and a short well received tour of Taiwan with Riot Season labelmates Dope Purple. And now finally, Hibushibire mark 2 is born properly. "Hibushibire has returned after a change of members. A psychedelic, progressive work, suitable for a new beginning." Entering the studio with Acid Mothers Temple/Mainliner guru Makoto Kawabata in the producer chair (and also as a guest musician) once again, the band recorded album number three, 'Magical Metamorphosis Third Eye.' Makoto also adds some of his own trademark guitar howls through out the album, perfectly complimenting Changchang's own growing prowess. Here the band have taken their trademark psych-rock blasts and blended them perfectly with some more trippy, dare I say sweet progressive psychedelic sounds. "The idea of this album is based on the theme of "occultism and mysticism." But it's not a serious thing, it's about the things we like (UFOs, pyramids, psychic phenomena, shamanism etc) and we all had fun while making it. In terms of what makes it different from the previous Hibushibire albums, it's where Aoi Hama's vocals are present. I had wanted to use a female vocalist for a long time, so it was a good feeling!" Like the band's first two albums, 'Magical Metamorphosis Third Eye' is very much an album of two halves. Side one again is full of killer shorter tracks, while side two is reserved for a blinding majestic 20 minute epic 'Ayahuasca Witch Abduction.' Perhaps the biggest musical surprise here though is probably track two, the beautifully mellow tripped out 'We Won't Go Back To The Past,' which sounds like it's been beamed straight out of the late '60s/early '70s.
The band also tip a nod to the Beatles psychedelic classic 'Tomorrow Never Ever Knows,' but with their own twist of course. It's clear with the line up changes, Changchang has decided to expand the band's musical pathway, and he's achieved stunning results.

With the release of their debut LP in 1968, Os Mutantes cracked the already red hot Tropicália scene wide open. Fusing traditional Brazilian music, psychedelia, rock, and a good dose of pure experimentation, they quickly became giants both in Brazil and in the outer fringes of pop music, where they have managed to reign supreme for the past four decades. OMEGA - SKYROVER
After four studio albums and one compilation, the Hungarian megastars Omega were still much of an insider tip in the West. However, sales figures were noticeably rising, though far from going through the roof. In addition, the band had evolved, becoming more professional, both in their live performance and in their appearance. Those in charge at Bacillus/Bellaphon definitely meant to hold on to Omega, so in 1976 the contract with the quintet was extended till 1980. And the band, together with producer Peter Hauke, went to the Europasound Studios in Offenbach to record 'Time Robber.' That LP was Omega's breakthrough in the West. To date, the album is said to have sold around two million copies. And this success was well deserved; for the first time, the Hungarians delivered a complex, self-contained work. Hopes were high for 'Skyrover.' Omega came to Offenbach again and self-produced an exquisite successor of 'Time Robber,' which was in no way inferior to its immensely successful predecessor. Quite a few Omega fans even consider 'Skyrover' to be the better record, since the band elegantly merged the styles, which on 'Time Robber' still appeared sometimes a bit stiff and side-by-side. 'Russian Winter' has become a live classic - titled 'Lena' on the Hungarian LP version. With its Eastern European folklore references, the song stood out from the musical concept, and that"s probably why it became a fan favorite. Released on orange marbled vinyl.

Originally released in 1969, this album is one of the most significant in Brazilian musical history, spearheading the musical Tropicalia revolution lead by Brazilian legends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, not to mention Gal Costa and mutant rockers Os Mutantes. Not only were the artists experimenting with the music, they were also making a very strong political statement that spoke out very harshly against the military regime in Brazil at the time. This album helped land Veloso and Gil a brief stint in jail and eventually in political exile in the UK. Comes on clear vinyl.

With the release of this seminal album, Veloso would become the leading voice of Tropicália. The songs on this album immediately connected with people. 'Alegria, Algeria' was his breakout hit that gained traction as a hymn for liberty advocates, juxtaposing images of Coca Cola, guerrilla groups, bombs and Brigitte Bardot as part of the everyday experience. The album's first song 'Tropicália' was an anthem for the whole movement; it's a fragmented allegory, a structure borrowed from friends in the concrete poetry scene, touching on divergent cultural symbols, events, allusions and idioms, nimbly representing and critiquing the many contradictions in the new Brazilian dictatorship. 'Superbacana' (translated as 'Supergroovy') follows a hyperbolic superhero's use of technology to fight a gang of cowboys led by the money-hungry Uncle Scrooge, serving as allusions to American imperialism and greed felt in their country, all in the rapid-fi re structure of a comic book. The subtext in all these songs, which the dictatorship would not immediately catch, were that these repressed but glaring contradictions, not the bountiful sunny paradise that the military regime was pushing, were the true national identity. Unfortunately, these cleverly veiled jabs in Veloso and his contemporaries' bodies of work gained greater and greater exposure as the movement became more and more popular, leading to the arrest, imprisonment and forced exile of Veloso and many of his cohorts. Comes on heavy pink vinyl.

Cologne-based progressive rock band Satin Whale, influenced by acts like Jethro Tull and Deep Purple, quickly developed a distinctive sound. Despite being labeled as krautrock in the early 1970s, their 1974 debut album 'Desert Places' showcased their originality, earning them the title of Germany's most popular band in Südwestfunk's 'Rocksound 74' contest. The band released five studio albums between 1974 and 1981, compiled in the retrospective 'History Box I - The Studio Albums.' A second retrospective, 'Soundtrack, Live & Alternative Mixes,' highlights their work on the 'Die Faust In Der Tasche' soundtrack, the live album Whalecome, and remixes from 'On Tour.' Emerging from Brighton's punk scene in 1979, The Chefs formed when Carl Evans and Helen McCookerybook began writing songs together, evolving from their previous band, The Smartees. Early tracks like 'Food,' 'Sweetie,' and 'Boasting' featured their sharp, two-minute style. After releasing music on Attrix Records, including 24 Hours, championed by John Peel, the band relocated to London, gaining a residency at The Moonlight Club and signing with Graduate Records. Despite splitting in 1982, members pursued varied musical paths, including Helen and the Horns and Yip Yip Coyote. This compilation revives their vibrant sound, showcasing unreleased tracks and early favorites.

Limited edition repress on white (bone) vinyl of cult-favorite Captured Tracks release, including bonus flexidisc featuring a rare cover of Free's 'All Right Now.' Saada Bonaire. The fantastic German disco/world music project from Bremen which never was meant to be. Formed by Bremen DJ Ralf Behrendt in 1982, Saada Bonaire was a unique concept band centered around two sultry female vocalists (Stefanie Lange and Claudia Hossfeld) and dozens of local musicians culled from the local immigration center. Originally signed to EMI in 1982, their first and only single, 'You Could Be More As You Are' was produced by legendary Matumbi, Slits and Pop Group producer Dennis Bovell in Kraftwerk's studio in Cologne. Its fusion of husky female vocals, Eastern instruments, dub and African music aesthetics, drum computers and synthesizers remains unique to this day. EMI cancelled the project upon its release. 'Saada Bonaire' compiles two songs from the original EMI single plus eleven previously unreleased songs recorded between 1982 and 1985. Also included are never before published photos and in depth interviews with band members and a full gate fold cover for those dedicated vinyl buyers. Saada Bonaire. A bizarre mix of Kraftwerk, Grace Jones, and Marlene Dietrich. These lost recordings from the early eighties still sound fresh on today's dance floor.

Reissue on GOLD COLOURED VINYL! In 1986, estranged Sisters Of Mercy members Craig Adams and Wayne Hussey began touring as The Sisterhood. On a revenge streak, Sisters Of Mercy frontman Andrew Eldritch immediately enlisted the help of collaborators Alan Vega (Suicide), Lucas Fox, Patricia Morrison (The Gun Club), James Ray (James Rays Gangwar) and Doktor Avalanche (The Sisters' drum machine) to record an album and release it in a week, to prevent the name from being used. For contractual reasons Eldritch himself was not permitted to sing on the album, but he wrote and produced it.

Like the "Boss" (Bruce Springsteen), Southside Johnny aka John Lyon is from New Jersey, and of course the paths of the two and the members of the E-Street Band crossed many times. Especially with Steven Van Zandt aka Little Steven there was a long lasting friendship and Van Zandt produced the first three albums 'I Don't Want To Go Home' (1976), 'This Time It's For Real' (1977) and 'Hearts Of Stone' (1978) of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, which were strongly influenced by rhythm & blues. The band gave their first German concert in 1977 at Hamburg's club Onkel Pö, and in October 1979 they played together with Mitch Ryder and Nils Lofgren at the 5th Rockpalast Night at Essen's Grugahalle. WDR was there for Rockpalast and recorded the concert. On March 26, 1992, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Dukes gave a second concert for Rockpalast in Cologne's Live Music Hall, where Little Steven joined them on stage for four songs. These two concerts are now available in a comprehensive box set with CDs and DVDs.

Built from a piano piece that Basinski composed in high school in the mid-1970s, 'September 23rd' quickly evolved into a vastly different work. As Basinski explains: "The original piano recordings were made on on a piano belonging to my downstairs neighbor, John Epperson - later known more famously as world-renowned drag artist, Lypsinka - at 351 Jay Street aka Casa Degli Artisti, our first loft in New York. It was recoded with a little portable (probably Radio Shack) cassette deck sitting on the piano as I improvised a piece I had been working on since high school. It was pretty terrible, but when I did the John Giorno/William Burroughs cut-up technique, suddenly I had something to put through the Frippertronics loop and feedback loop tape delay system - and boy did I get results. A very prolific time for a young, wacked-out queen in NYC." Released on black vinyl.

Marionette presents 'Dessus Oben Alto Up,' the first collaboration between Andrea Belfi and Jules Reidy. Though originally from Australia and Italy, both artists are now based in Berlin and share a deep affinity for combining precise composition and electroacoustic technique with improvisational freedom. Created during a residency at Berlin's Callie's sound studio, the album features four expansive tracks with Belfi's clear, rhythmic drumming weaving through Reidy's shimmering guitar and electronic textures. The opener, 'Dessus,' introduces Reidy's unique guitar tuning over Belfi's gentle brushwork, gradually building into a rush of synthetic tones. 'Oben' blends kinetic guitar arpeggios with Belfi's dynamic drumming, enveloped in swirling electronics and hints of vintage synth and glitch. 'Alto' intensifies the energy with a propulsive 6/8 rhythm, strumming acoustic guitar, and bubbling synth chords. On the B-side, the 15-minute piece 'Up' unfolds more gradually, blending chiming guitars, dub-influenced bass, and intricate percussion to create a constantly shifting soundscape that draws the listener into its evolving textures.

The second in Mr Bongo's series opening the vault on classic recordings from the fabled Groove Merchant Records catalogue. This time the spotlight turns to the Hammond B3 organ maestro Lonnie Smith, as we proudly present a reissue of his cosmic jazz-funk journey, 'Afro-Desia.' Originally released in 1975, this much-loved album was produced by Groove Merchant label owner Sonny Lester and features the mysterious 'Compliments Of A Friend' on guitar. Considering Smith was part of George Benson's quartet in the '60s, that not so discreet veil appears to have been lifted on who this 'friend' might be. However, presumably due to contractual reasons, Benson had to remain covert for this recording. The lineup doesn't stop there though, with the likes of legendary bassist Ron Carter and Grammy award winning saxophonist Joe Lovano joining the outfit.

A synthesised landscape with a Northern charm, Transmission Towers marry the musical worlds of two artists that last collaborated over a decade ago. 10 years have passed, lives have been led, but a gravitational pull has placed Mark Kyriacou and Eleanor Mante back in each other's spheres on opposite sides of the city of Liverpool. Energised with a newfound desire to strip it all back to the sounds that influenced their formative years in the late '80s and '90s - astral travelling, intoxicated on Motor City techno, Black Dog IDM and mystical Sun Ra.

It's a pleasure, a labour of love and a yearly highlight to present a new volume of the Mr Bongo Record Club series. In this collection, they have curated new finds alongside old, treasured tracks, selecting music inspiring them from the Brazilian, Latin, soul, disco, gospel, cosmic, dancehall and downtempo genres. They have chosen a diverse array of artists, including Os Panteras from Brazil, stomping underground disco by Claude Jay, the Danish soul sounds of Gitte & Inger and the gospel excellence of Truth & Devotion, to name a few. Most of the selections in this volume are older vintage productions, however, there is one very special contemporary production, recorded exclusively for Mr Bongo Record Club 7. For 'Spring Has Sprung,' they linked three of their cherished musical family together; the legendary cult artist Asha Puthli, the wondrous band SOYUZ and Swedish maestro Sven Wunder. The result, as you'd expect, is completely breathtaking.

This 1956 Donald Byrd's quartet session, subsequently released in 1957 on Transition Records, sees the young trumpeter leading a Beacon Hill based rhythm section featuring bassist Doug Watkins, pianist Ray Santisi, and drummer Jim Zitano. The perfect line up for getting through a selection of classic standards such as 'Stella By Starlight,' 'Polka Dots And Moonbeams,' and 'What's New.' The atmosphere is easy and relaxed, and far from the hard bop/soul mood that later became Byrd's signature. This is a higly sensitive quartet that swings lightly and without unnecessary overplaying but with just the right hint of blues to make the music highly intriguing. Limited clear vinyl.

CALLIER, TERRY - I JUST CAN'T HELP MYSELF (FR)
'I Just Can't Help Myself' is a studio album from American musician Terry Callier. Released by Cadet Records in 1973, this is the artist's fourth album since his debut a decade prior and the final of three that he recorded in short succession for Cadet with producer Charles Stepney. Despite its contemporary feel, however, much of the material on 'I Just Can't Help Myself' dates back several years - both the powerful 'Alley-Wind Song' and the John Coltrane tribute 'Can't Catch The Trane' were initially recorded during the 1969 sessions which later comprised the 'First Light' collection, while the graceful reading of Duke Ellington's 'Satin Doll' was and would remain a longstanding highlight of Callier's live set.

In 1971, Dr Tree emerged as a highly innovative jazz-fusion ensemble from Auckland, formed by two of New Zealand's most seasoned session musicians, Frank Gibson Jr. and Murray McNabb - the pair had jammed together since grammar school. Drawing sizable crowds while working the Auckland circuit, the band caught the attention of EMI scout, Alan Galbraith, who wasted no time signing them up for an album. Galbraith, a trained musician and adventurous producer, brought in additional support from Julian Lee, an internationally acclaimed arranger and producer (who had recently returned to New Zealand after a decade Stateside on Frank Sinatra's insistence). Recorded in 1959 and released on Blue Note the following year, 'Peckin' Time' is the result of one of those fine studio sessions featuring a bunch of jazz heavyweights. Here we have the perfect tandem of Hank Mobley on tenor sax and Lee Morgan on trumpet. Two great stylists in full shape, greatly backed by the ultra elastic rhythm section of Winton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Charlie Persip on drums. All true masters of the bop vocabulary including all the possible variants from blues to Latin. This very enjoyable album consists of all Mobley's originals except the beautiful rendition of Kurt Weil's classic 'Speak Low.'

This album in Mr Bongo's Cuban Classics series is a hard one to pigeonhole. It's a real oddity, unique and not in keeping with the majority of Cuban albums we know, but it's all the better for this. Coming courtesy of Juan Almeida, the 'Fantasia' LP is an eclectic and epic, instrumental ride through Latin jazz-funk, trippy electronics and orchestrated classical music. Sounding at points like a full-blown orchestrated score to a dusty animated film extravaganza, with phrases and passages repeating like the appearance of ghostly spectres throughout the recording. At others, it busts into exotic funk, psychedelic-trippiness and Afro-Cuban percussion. As rich and varied as the record, so too was Juan Almeida's (Juan Almeida Bosque) life. A descendant of African slaves born in a poor neighbourhood in Havana in 1927, Almeida went from bricklayer to university law student, through which he would meet Fidel Castro. He played a key role in the Cuban revolution, becoming the only black commander and famously voicing "Aqui no se rinde nadie!" ("Nobody here surrenders!") when outnumbered at the start of the offensive. Castro would later make him one of his vice presidents, but Almeida's legacy does not stop there. He also became the composer of over 300 popular Cuban songs, many of them recounting his days as a guerrilla. Produced, orchestrated and conducted by Rafael Somavilla, who worked on a vast array of Cuban recordings including Raúl Gómez's 'Instrumental' which was also reissued on Mr Bongo, the feel of 'Fantasia' is big, luscious, grand and pop-classical. It has become a highly sought-after, cult Cuban rarity amongst collectors and like many great albums, every repeat listen brings with it new elements previously unnoticed. Such is its richness and depth. A truly mesmerising, off-the-beaten-track instrumental record.

In 1972, Joyce and Nelson recorded the LP 'Nelson Angelo E Joyce,' her only professional recording between 1971 and 1975. Sophisticated in its simplistic sound, the album explores Joyce's tender voice and Angelo's melancholic mantra-shaped melodies. The duo fuse bossa nova and acoustic psychedelic rock in arrangements that incorporate nature sounds and ritual drumming. The opening track stands out with its angular chord changes and pretty melody, a perfect start. They trade tunes, Joyce sings 'Hotel Universo' and Nelson sings the next track and then back to Joyce. A cohesive work from both musicians.

The fertility of the Cuban music scene in the 1970s was rich and blooming. FA-5's self-titled album from 1976 is a perfect example of the energy and vitality emanating from the country's musicians and marks another release in Mr Bongo's Cuban Classics series. A unique musical fusion that encompasses Latin rock, funk, soul, disco and Afro-Cuban rhythms to form a diverse and alluring album. The exquisite, funk-fuelled opener, 'Muevete Con Las Fuerzas Del Corazon,' is maybe the most-known song on the album. It is a super catchy cut powered by a dynamite bassline, joy-filled horn playing and splashes of drum breaks that will ignite any dancefloor. The record surfs through genres as it progresses. 'Di Tu Que Haras Sin Mi' and 'Paso Sin Mas' lean back with a West Latin rock/AOR flavour to their grooves. Elsewhere, the dreamy, cosmic, Balearic-tinged 'El Blue' and fuzzy funk-rock breaks of 'Pero Lo Cierto Es Que No Quise Mas' further show the breadth of styles at play on the LP. Another big highlight on the album is the Latin, disco-funk sounds of 'Casa De Ladrillo,' which morphs into a cover version of the Commodores 'Brick House.' The result is a superb alternative take on a much-loved classic. Released on the state-owned Areito Records, the album was directed by Nestor Caballero, who arranged the songs alongside Aneiro Taño and Osvaldo Caraballoso. The prolific Tony Taño produced the album with the recording courtesy of Tony Lopez who worked with Juan Pablo Torres, Los Reyes 73, Grupo Los Yoyi, Raúl Gómez and many other Cuban greats that have been featured in the Cuban Series.
A fabulous, under-the-radar classic, that will enrich any collection.

Continuing the Mr Bongo Cuban Classics Series, here's Los Reyes 73's sensational debut LP from 1975. The album had multiple different pressings under various titles and artworks, but the music stayed the same and speaks for itself. The group set the bar high with this fiery Afro-Cuban-funk gem, letting loose a vibrant Latin workout combining psych rock trippiness with a heavy dose of deep funk. Elements that fuse to firmly cement this album as a '70s Cuban masterpiece. Releasing just two albums and a handful of 7-inch singles, the band were a popular and influential group in Cuba at the time. Since then, they have featured on several compilation albums across the 2000s that have helped raise their portfolio to new audiences worldwide. Produced by the magical Raúl Gómez, the album featured a list of heavyweight Cuban musicians. Directed by Santiago Reyes and Ovidio Guerra, with orchestration from greats including Ricardo Eddy Martinez who also released the much-loved album 'Expreso Ritmico' in 1978 alongside Ignacio Herrera, Mario Valdes and Gilberto García. The album also features the writing prowess of Los Van Van's Miguel A'ngel Rasalps. Blending traditional Cuban son aesthetics with funk influences and psychedelic touches, the music housed within showcases a cosmic fusion that stands up on any modern dancefloor. The scintillating opener 'Grandes Amigos,' the tripped out 'Adeoey' and the grooving 'Un Lamento Hecho Cancion' are just a handful of examples that exhibit the sheer musical melting pot of this album. For this reissue, they have chosen to use the artwork from a Mexican version of the album released on Pentagrama Records that features the beautiful bird illustration cover art. The Cuban edition was released on the state-run Areito. An outstanding and wondrous Latin record that has long been calling out for an official reissue.

Originating in Piacenza, Italy in 2017, The Backdoor Society delivers a powerful blend of '60s Nederbeat, British psychedelia and freakbeat, Texas acid punk, and Byrdsian jangle. While recording their eponymous debut LP in 2019, the band set aside two unfinished songs that were perfected through a collaboration with legendary Hammond player Paolo Apollo Negri, resulting in the high-powered, organ-driven, garage-psych groove of their Hypnotic Bridge 45.
Paolo is recognized as one of the most important and influential Hammond players on the international scene. He has been part of the Link Quartet since 1997 and his reputation as an eclectic session man continues to grow, playing on more than 300 albums while covering almost every music style.

Based in Orlando, Florida, The Belltowers were formed in 2004 by Paul Mutchler (formerly of garage-psych legends The Lears) on vocals and guitars, Eddie Foeller on guitars and harmonica; Marshall Huggins on vocals, bass and organ and the band's most recent addition, Bill Langbein, on drums. Influenced by folk-rock, psychedelia and power pop, the band shares a common love of The Byrds, The Who, The Beatles, The Kinks, Gene Clark, Love, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub, and The Rain Parade. They employ vintage instruments (Rickenbacker, Gretsch, Epiphone, Fender, and Guild) to play their jangly, harmony-laden songs.
With its Byrdsian jangle and Beatlesque "Day Tripper" vibe, 'Tomorrow Will Remain' was laid down on a '70s MCI 24-track, two-inch recorder for an authentic feel, with strings arranged by Marshall Huggins. Like the A-side, 'Sunshine Nursery Rhymes' employs classic guitars and vintage Fender amps for maximum warmth and resonance, delivering a driving Byrds-by-way-of-Tom-Petty level of rural, pop-psych euphoria.

Born under the sign of reverb, Black Snake Moan is a sound research project with deep roots in the atmospheres of blues and psychedelic rock. Atypical to most one-man bands, Italian artist Marco Contestabile is inspired by a broad spectrum of artists, which culminates in a sound threaded with spiritual evocation. Much of his inspiration comes from his homeland, the realm of the ancient Etruscans, a region permeated with mystery, where the cult of death and belief in the afterlife and supernatural events were part of everyday life, reflecting the spirituality of ancient cultures throughout the world.
While encompassing a new vision of the legendary sound of the 1960s, both songs also reflect the innovative songcraft of the pioneers of the psychedelic genre, including The Beatles, Love, and Jefferson Airplane. With its driving organ and Morrisonian baritone, 'Fire' also evokes The Doors and Iron Butterfly, while 'What You See' integrates a jangly, 12-string guitar and desert rock vibes that reflect the dreamy West Coast vibe of The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield. As a metaphor, 'Fire' represents the Dark Night of the Soul and expresses a moment of absolute spiritual desolation in which one feels totally lost yet connected to a story in the process of being told. The song delves into the deep sense of something vital missing from our lives, and the purification that comes with the revelation of the soul's true identity. We are in darkness so that we can understand the meaning of Light and Truth, lighting the path of our way back to finding our true nature.

CHEMISTRY SET - PAINT ME A DREAM/THE WITCH
Pioneers in the late '80s UK neo-psychedelic scene, Dave Mclean and Paul Lake founded The Chemistry Set in 1987, releasing mind-melting sets of songs on Manchester's alternative Imaginary label as well as the cassette-only Acid Tapes label.
Known for their sophisticated original songcraft as well as their uncanny ability to interpret often obscure (but always classic) psychedelic songs with unparalleled cover versions, The Chemistry Set have taken some the most lysergic works of The Pink Floyd, Love, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Rolling Stones, Del Shannon, The Moody Blues, Tomorrow and more to exciting and unexpected places. The band took an extended hiatus in the mid '90s until remarkably reappearing in 2008. The return came about when their unreleased LP from 1989, 'Sounds Like Painting,' somehow was uploaded onto numerous blogs and downloaded over 5,000 times. The second stage of the band has seen the release of four albums, five vinyl singles and several compilation appearances. Praised by musical royalty from John Peel to David Axelrod and lauded in a wide spectrum of music media, the band's prolific catalogue of releases have been accompanied by extensive tours throughout the UK, Europe and the United States. 'Paint Me A Dream' is about the power of visions. It begins, lyrically, with a group of mystics who become hypnotized as they sing together while playing dulcimers and lyres. This in turn evolves into mystical visions and a request to the divine eye to "paint them a dream" (travel from the grey to the technicolor). As the painted dream multiplies and embraces them further, they meet Orpheus, the lyre-playing Greek musician, poet and prophet, travelling further in time and space to encounter translucent orbs, stratospheric emanations and transcendental oscillations. Yes, it's a trip.
Musically, the song employs layered multiple rhythm guitars to create a wall of sound, using the differing tones of a 1963 Fender Esquire with custom pick-ups (as a Syd Barrett once wielded) and a Gretsch with TV Jones pick-ups. Riffs were put through vintage fuzz, tremolo and '60s tape delays, offering different textures and dynamics. After the first guitar solo, a bow of appreciation is given to the band HP Lovecraft, with harmonies in a style similar to a part of their live version of 'The Drifter' while also finishing with 'The Drifter' riff in a different key to the original. Because it's so similar to the style in which The Chemistry Set write their own songs, 'The Witch' felt like a great choice for a cover. For the intro, the band crafted a Bee Gees-inspired five-part Gregorian chant to achieve the desired ethereal vibe, while a bit of Red Krayola-style free-form-freak-out later in the song adds a new twist to Mark Fry's obscure classic. The full glory of psychedelia was further augmented with a collection of interesting instruments, including Persian setar, acoustic cigar box guitar, strangely tuned 12 string acoustic, vintage keyboards, various ethnic percussive instruments and even a half full whiskey bottle hit with a knife! Both songs are influenced by the immortal collective spirits of Arthur Lee and Love, Syd Barrett, Jimi Hendrix, Tomorrow, The Electric Prunes and Ennio Morricone.

Raised in California and steeped in the unique elements of the West Coast, Dream Phases filters the magic that emanates from all that surrounds them. From the sun-soaked beaches, verdant valleys, and soaring mountains, to the hard-boiled legacy of Los Angeles and the bright, neon promise of Hollywood, the band is a reflection of the environment in which they are immersed.
Dream Phases began with a vision of evolving the sounds launched by legendary L.A. bands such as The Byrds, The Beach Boys, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, as well as those who followed, including The Rain Parade, Elliott Smith, Darker My Love, and Autolux. As the synths on the song attest, 'Helen Highway' was written while listening to a lot of Gary Numan, with the synthesizer tracks layered in a way that lets the listener fall into the song and be swept along. The lyrics relate how we only get one chance at life, reminding us not to be complacent and to remember we can change continually, pursuing the life we truly want to live. With the influences of not only Gary Numan, but The Verve and The Velvet Underground, the song builds to an ending of pure release. 'Tandy' is about reflecting on a past relationship and questioning its outcome. Written with a garage-psych feel influenced by L.A.'s Paisley Underground movement (The Rain Parade, The Dream Syndicate, The Three O'Clock), it's a song writer Brandon Graham envisions being played by DJ friends at local psych club nights. Like The Creation, the band uses a bow on some of the guitars to create an especially unmistakable psychedelic sound. A 12-string Rickenbacker overdub on the bridge is evidence of Brandon's immersion in a massive book on The Byrds (especially their 1965-68 heyday) while making the song.

FLOWER MACHINE - THROUGH A LONDON WINDOW/ONE IN A MILLION
Starting with their 2004 debut album 'Chalk Dust Dream Of The Tea Cozy Mitten Company,' The Flower Machine has been one of the longest-running yet most obscure bands in the Los Angeles psych scene. Led by Dutch-American singer and guitarist Peter Quinnell, the band has consistently focused on crafting dense, heavily-overdubbed psych-pop songs, delivered through an intermittent series of loud and chaotic performances over the years in the LA club scene. Strongly influenced by Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, The Outsiders, and Kevin Ayers, The Flower Machine's idiosyncratic take on psychedelia was shaped during Peter's formative years in Amsterdam, a city where the spirit of 1967 in many ways never ended. Currently based in San Luis Obispo, California, The Flower Machine recorded the basic tracks for their Hypnotic Bridge single in a cavernous warehouse near the airport, using an 8-track machine. The tapes were then taken to a studio in the leafy realm of Cambria, where they added sitar, flute, organ, backwards guitars and subtle layers of mellotron cello to complete the A-side, 'Through A London Window,' which was inspired in part by Antonioni's 1966 cinematic masterpiece 'Blow Up.' 'One In A Million,' perhaps the most obscure item in the Pink Floyd cannon, makes its vinyl debut on the B-side. Surviving only on a murky audience tape from a gig in Copenhagen in September, 1967, the song is thought to be a joint composition between Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. It even may have been an early version of the rumored 'She Was A Millionaire' single The Pink Floyd were working on to follow up 'See Emily Play.' Peter spent ages decoding its lyrics, enabling us to present here, for the first time ever, a fully realized version of a song that many consider to be one of the last holy relics of 1967. Peter employs a black-and-white Danelectro 59 for the guitar parts, while Matt plays the menacing, Wright-influenced organ.

JOVIAN TEA - STRANGE WORLD/RED AND GREEN TALKING MACHINE

Some twenty-five years ago, a pair of amazing songs emerged on a compilation called 'Incredible Sound Show Stories Vol. 1 (The Technicolour Milkshake)', reportedly from a mysterious, white-label acetate from the U.K., circa 1967, which had no band or songwriting credits listed. Many moons later, Stu Pope from Hypnotic Bridge Records was playing the songs for Chris Mercado (The Mad Walls) and Glenn Brigman (Triptides) in The Green Room at Hypnotic Bridge HQ and it was decided this glorious psych-pop single should be brought to our shared illusory reality by recording it anew as faithfully as possible under the moniker Jovian Tea. Stu transcribed the songs; Glenn and Chris worked their musical magic, and as the rest is, hopefully, history (as it should have been all along). Though we're not sure which song was originally intended as the A-side, intuition tells us it was 'Strange World' (though both songs are equally wonderful). 'Strange World' is classic psychedelia from the first line of the lyrics, relating the musings of a whimsical soul who, lying horizontally, looks up and reflects on how watching a fly traverse the ceiling makes it feel as though he's upside down. The perspective then shifts to that of the fly, who laments how the people below continually try to destroy his kind. We suspect the song's unknown author was a fan of The Pink Floyd (and Syd Barrett in particular). 'Red And Green Talking Machine' is the tale of a frustrated young fellow, quite possibly the same one who's been observing diptera dancing on the plaster skies above, bemoaning the lack of "keenness" on the part of his pet parrot, who apparently isn't much of a talker after all. Sheer psychedelic brilliance.

In a word (or three), The Laissez Fairs are the inevitable band. John Fallon (leading light of legendary Irish-American psychedelic band The Steppes) and Joe Lawless make the music (and more) happen from their Las Vegas compound, where they simply will not compromise when it comes to crafting essential mod psych pop. They do what they want... because that's what you want. The right noise. The right vision. The right everything. Cromm Fallon and Aaron Archer on bass and drums: also rightly right. Right? The instrumentation on both '10,000 Tomorrows' and 'From Field To Field' is actually more than that produced by physical instruments. It is often the way they are recorded: the placement of mics (or the deliberate lack of mics), the use of effects on a guitar passage for impact and its removal as its sound goes elsewhere. Sometimes the vocals become a vibrato that sound like what you could hear at the feasts of the ancient Irish High Kings. The sounds are acoustic and electric, mechanical and spiritual.

Based in Boston and inspired by The Velvet Underground, My Bloody Valentine and other drone-laden, feedback-and-fuzz-loving bands, Magic Shoppe have offered up their own heady concoction of dark, dreamy, shoegaze psychedelia on four EPs and four full-length albums over the past eight years, including 2019's 'Circles' LP. Coincidentally yet appropriately labeling their reverb-heavy sound as "hypnotic," Magic Shoppe's single for Hypnotic Bridge leads off with A-side 'Doppelgänger,' a song originally titled 'Salventius' after the Dutch artist known for his "single-line" drawings of faces. Shelved from an earlier project, the name 'Doppelgänger' was actually suggested by Salventius, given it's a sort of "double" for the original concept for the song. Songwriter and lead guitarist Josiah Webb used three fuzz pedals (with a "fully cocked wah" at the end) with tones turned to pure treble for the fuzz. The ending riff is a nod to Roger McGuinn: highly compressed, clean and with maximum treble, creating a tone that evokes The Byrds' 'Eight Miles High.' Not a reference to San Francisco's airport but, rather, an acronym for 'Skintight Futuristic Outfit,' 'S.F.O.' was conceived and tracked in a single session. The band originally intended to play the song quickly, then reverse it completely, possibly adding forward overdubs, but after hearing the results decided to give it more of a "split-brain" dynamic. The first part of the song is played normally, but after some intentional audio degradation (and Vox Cheetah/Fender Twin amp feedback), descends into a total reverse copy of the beginning, with the exception of a forwards vocal overdub.

Psych pop for the 21st Century, 'You And Me In Space' takes us on a cosmic trip to the edge of the galaxy, fueled by love and a blissed-out dissolution of all that keeps us from soaring beyond our everyday confines. Recorded in an industrial estate in North London, the band set the scene by filling the room with multi-colored lights before deploying a full range of vintage equipment and psychedelic effects: backwards Telecaster through a Big Muff pedal, Hofner bass, space-age organ and even high-pitched, fuzzed-out vibrations made by blowing through blades of grass. Recorded during the 'Waves' album sessions and selected specifically as an exclusive song for the Hypnotic Bridge 45, 'Clocks' is dedicated to those who love the sound of the wah-wah guitar in its most psychedelic setting. Drummer Shin Okajima's dramatic drum on the intro was inspired by the style and sound of the traditional Japanese Wadaiko.

The Piaggio Soul Combination is a musical collective from Pisa, Italy, where long-standing mod Marco "Piaggio" Piaggesi has combined the best singers and musicians of the local Latin-soul scene to create a dynamic fusion of sound. Mixing Italian, American and Caribbean musicians, the band builds a solid foundation of polyrhythms before adding tasty bass lines and groove-laden guitars. A tight-as-hell horn section and a fat organ sound complete the picture, offering a boiling pot of soul grooves, up-tempos, Latin-jazz movers with northern soul. In 2020, they started their collaboration with Arkansas-bred lead vocalist Lakeetra Knowles. But dance floor-oriented northern soul is not their only passion; they also have a taste for psych pop, and on their exclusive release for Hypnotic Bridge they feature two great guest musicians: psychedelic guitar legend Dome LaMuerte, founder of the seminal band Not Moving, who takes the axe-man role on 'Space Diary,' and Greek vocal therapist, experimenter and Maestra Marina Mulopulos, lead vocalist on 'Dimmelo.' When The Piaggio Soul Combination recorded a few songs with legendary Italian guitarist Dome Le Muerte, they knew he would bring his psychedelic brilliance to the mix. And he did. So much so, in fact, that Space Diary didnt quite fit the vibe of their recent album and found its way instead to the lysergic sanctuary of Hypnotic Bridge Records. Dome's trebly, tremolo-barred chords are reminiscent of John Cipollina's work with Quicksilver Messenger Service (which with tracks such as 'Dino's Song' also embraced the concept of a "new breed leaving for unknown shores"). But the sound of the 1967 'Satanic Majesties'-era Rolling Stones serves as the greatest inspiration for 'Space Diary,' both in the songs "space journey" topic as well as the massive use of Mellotronic flutes, violins and horns. 'Dimmelo' was inspired by The Open Mind's 'Free As The Breeze,' with The Piaggio Soul Combination adding Indian flavors and a Kula Shakeresque "Delhi disco" beat to give the song an undeniably global feel and appeal.

Based in Portland, Oregon and influenced heavily by their mutual love of jangly '60s psych, The Reverberations began crafting their authentic sounds in 2015. Led by guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Dave Berkham (formerly of The Cry!), who met rhythm guitarist John Jenne (ex-Sundaze and White Swans) and drummer/percussionist Ian Bixby (ex-Go Fever and Errata Note) while playing in a '60s cover band, the group subsequently added Cameron Mazzia (Dave's former bandmate in The Midnight Callers) on bass and Bob Fountain on keys to form The Reverberations. Inspired by a fictional psychedelic experience (with all the exciting highs and mellow lows), 'Milder Higher' marks a new, more complex direction in The Reverberations' sound. With interesting time changes, Leslie vocals and a reversed lead fuzz guitar, the song evokes bands as diverse as The Beatles and The Peanut Butter Conspiracy.
Like the A-side, 'Sunshine' was recorded in early 2019 by the legendary Matt Rendon at Midtown Island Studios in Tucson and recorded to 8-track tape for a classic approach and feeling, with backing vocals done as three-part harmonies around a single microphone. The recent addition of keyboards to The Reverberations' lineup brings an essential psychedelic element to the song, and the band.

Formed by Jet Wintzer and Jayne Gabriel in a motorway motel in Taunton, England on the first day of the new millennium, Schizo Fun Addict's first recording began with a demo in the shower stall, recorded with a primitive laptop and micro-cassette Dictaphone. Combining ultra-lo-fi vocals drenched in natural reverb with digital effects and beats, the sound was described by Paul Johnson in Uncut as invoking Brian Wilson writing for the Jesus and Mary Chain, "teetering on the knife edge between cohesion and collapse." In 2008, SFA were invited to be the first release on the now-legendary Fruits de Mer Records. Last 6 copies! The Seeds remain amongst the most beloved and iconographic of the original 1960s garage-psych avatars. To many, their edgy dissonant sounds and relentless fuzz-fuelled drive, tinged with flights of psychedelic fancy, makes The Seeds the quintessential exponent of the genre, as heard on such classics-for-the-ages as 'Pushin' Too Hard,' 'Can't Seem To Make You Mine' and 'Mr Farmer.' Their eponymous 1966 debut album has long been recognized as a minimalist rock'n'roll masterpiece, while its sequels, the pop-art 'A Web Of Sound' and florid 'Future', have also grown more influential as time goes on. For decades, the name The Seeds was most closely identified with the activities of their eccentric vocalist, the late Sky Saxon, but the first, path-finding line-up was always a collaboration, the musical director of which was, without a doubt, keyboard whiz Daryl Hooper. Now, in the 2020s, as the only surviving original Seed, Daryl has reclaimed his birthright with a new and powerful set of Seeds personnel: band historian Alec Palao on bass, singer/frontman extraordinaire Paul Kopf, and Sky Saxon alumni Mark Bellgraph on guitar and Justin Smith on drums. Careful to undertake writing and recording of new material with the same spirit that made the original Seeds discs so evocative, 'Vampire' and 'Butterfly Child' aspire to inspire rather than revive. Having worked extensively on the Seeds' back catalogue as well as writing/producing the recent rockumentary 'The Seeds: Pushin' Too Hard,' Palao oversaw the new single at SGV Studios in Alhambra using the same methods that had worked for the original band in their heyday, recording live to analog tape with only a minimum of overdubs, in order to preserve the dynamics so often lacking from modern productions. The guitars fizz and throb, the drums grind and groove, and Daryl's piano and organ parts remain as spookily compelling as ever. And Kopf delivers a performance one hundred percent in keeping with the energy and verve that is The Seeds' signature.

Simian Life came into being as a studio project for brothers and longtime Los Angeles psych veterans Andy Campanella (Chief Nowhere, Occult Wisdom) and Robert Campanella (BJM, The Quarter After). Inspired by intrepid acts mainly from the golden eras of yesteryear, the brothers, along with like-minded collaborators, seek to capture the sounds of wherever their muses may take them. Whether the song be mellower (à la Nick Drake or Roy Harper) or heavier (à la The Move or The Who), Simian Life puts an emphasis on instrumental and vocal texture in hopes of creating an atmosphere for going within or travelling throughout... or both. In making 'Another Way Down,' the brothers Campanella were joined by Misha Bullock on drums and vocals along with Gabriel Lazar on piano. In producing the track, they were inspired by the studio wizardry and experimentation that came out of the latter half of the 1960s, much as it did with 'Revolver'-era Beatles. For example, a Roland Space Echo tape delay and ADT (Artificial Double-Tracking) were applied to the vocals for an otherworldly vibe. Additionally, they used a recording technique known as varispeed on the guitar solo, which was purposely recorded at half-speed and an octave lower, thus giving it a frantic effect when sped up to song's actual tempo. The flip side, 'Briefing,' is an excerpt from a forthcoming Simian Life song that took on a life of its own. On it, Matt Cooker provided the cello, Isabel Escalante the violin, Garret Wayne Walters the saxophone, and Rishi Dhir of Elephant Stone the sublime sitar. Largely inspired by the lush, semi-orchestral soundtrack work from late '60s and early '70s Europe, this track layers a repeated string theme and solos by sitar and saxophone over a driving, rock backbeat.

L.A.'s legendary psychedelic songcrafters The Smoking Trees have been making lushly trippy baroque-pop-psych vinyl offerings since 2013's mind-melting 'Acetate' LP on Burger Records. Now, ten years after their debut release, band leader Martin Nuñez has joined forces with Hypnotic Bridge to take the trip to an even higher plane. TIMOTHY EERIE - I FEAR THE VOID IS WAITING FOR ME/ACID LAKE
"Psych pop with deep grooves and endless ego deaths..." It's no accident the name Timothy Eerie is so close to that of Timothy Leary. This is the aural equivalent of two tabs and a trip down the rabbit hole. Since their first release in 2017, these day-glo denizens of the (Orange) Sunshine State have been kicking around the underground, making quite a name for themselves in a short period of time. Like many bands of this genre, there's been a revolving door of players, but that only lends to the mystique of Timothy Eerie's sound: a sound that started as a bedroom recording project and has now moved far beyond the bedroom. 'I Fear The Void Is Waiting For Me' (inspired by a serious dose of mushrooms and the resulting experience of dissolution and rebirth) and 'Acid Lake' were both recorded in a few different places. Bass, drums and rhythm guitar were tracked live at a studio on a college campus. The band slipped into BB King's as they were closing one night and recorded the organ parts on a vintage Hammond and Leslie setup in about 15 minutes. The vocals and other overdubs were all done in the bedrooms of the various band members. The idea was to make the songs sounds as loud, fast and energetic as they sound live.

Led by composer/guitarist Eric Penna and named after the diminutive and once-ubiquitous Eastern European automobile, Trabants play an instrumental mix of vintage-inspired surf, garage, and psych with a cinematic twist that has found broad use in film, television, and advertising. Originally formed in Boston, the band is now headquartered in Portland, Oregon. The result of a years-long process to distill the ultimate hybrid of instrumental surf and psychedelic bliss, 'Mantra' and 'Surfers On Acid' was conceived as the definitive psych-surf single and timeless summer soundtrack. 'Mantra' picks up where Trabants' 2015 album on Lolipop Records, 'Freakout,' left off, inspired by the psychedelic sounds of the '60s while chasing and embracing the era's righteously primitive fuzz effects. The result is a perfect audible accompaniment to your own psychedelic trip, however you may wish to bring it on. 'Mantra' is the temple. It is personal. It is pure. It is love distilled into its simplest form. We all have a mantra within, and if we are willing to listen deeply, we may find a wiser version of ourselves reflecting back in the mirror of the eternal Now. An aural ride through the tumultuous, exotic waves of an alien terrain, 'Surfers On Acid' is an idea brought to fruition via vintage sounds and methods, fusing surf and psychedelia into one symbiotic piece of music. Trabants leader Eric Penna explains: "Being a true chaser of authentic sounds, I spent years trying to find a unique and rare specimen in the pantheon of guitar effects to bring this song to life the way I heard it in my mind. My acquisition of an original Tychobrahe Octavia played through a classic and pristine blonde Fender Showman (borrowed from none other than the modern instrumental band Satan's Pilgrims) brought the sound out of my mind and into the physical realm. Rhythmic, reverb-drenched and brimming with layers of (forwards and) backwards guitar, these mind-and-body focused songs are also a response to the enigmatic mention of surf music in the lyrics of Jimi Hendrix's 'Third Stone From The Sun,' which Hendrix apparently was transmitting to fellow left-handed guitar hero and surf music legend Dick Dale: "And you'll never hear surf music again (that sounds like a lie to me)."

TRAUM (GERMANY) - HOLD THE LINE/SUNSHINE SONG
With a classic power trio line-up and stone solid dedication to the cream of 1960s British psych-pop sounds, Traum (German for Dream) draw their inspiration from the bands that originally defined the psychedelic aesthetic, including July, Tintern Abbey, The Beatles, The Pretty Things and The Smoke. Using vintage instruments, gear and effects complemented by classic production techniques, Traum bring analogue tape echo, delays and spring reverb to the mix, with truly mind-blowing results.
Primary singer and songwriter Helen Lichter makes the magic happen in Traum's own "dream studio" in Köln, Germany, where their debut single for Hypnotic Bridge Records was recorded in 2023. Launching their first-ever song, 'Hold The Line,' with a piercing riff that pays homage to The Smoke and other masters of UK psych circa '67, Traum presents an ode to the mystified daze of a Technicolor dream. Supercharged by vintage tape echoes and bursts of fuzz guitar, it's made to spiral deep into the double-helix matrix of multi-mirrored minds. 'Sunshine Song' counters the mistaken notion that ignorance is bliss with a message of universal appeal: a brilliantly illuminated path of enlightenment can take us all beyond the boundaries of Earth to the farthest reaches of the universe, both within and without (all whilst immersed in an infinite ocean of fuzz-laden vibration, of course).

Last 7 copies! Los Angeles-based psychedelic rock group Triptides, led by multi-instrumentalist Glenn Brigman, began in the summer of 2010 as a series of home-recorded tape machine experiments. The band has since released six full-length albums along with several singles and EPs. Last 2 copies! An American five-piece garage-psych band rooted in a passion for '60s music and fashion, The Violet Mindfield hail from the Inland Empire of Southern California. The group consists of John Duran (lead vocals, guitar), Harry Parr (drums, backing vocals), Sean McBreen (bass), Clifton Weaver (organ, percussion, multi-instrumentalist) and Victor Salazar (guitar, backing vocals). John Duran: 'Tell Me' came from an acute period of self-reflection and the meeting of a very special person in my life. I wrote it several years ago and for a while it was a staple in our live set, sometimes extending to over 20 minutes. For the single, the idea was to retain the vibe of the original version but to do something a bit different as far as instrumentation than what we normally do. At the same time, I wanted to maintain a relatively cohesive overall sound with the other work we've been putting out lately. To do this, we shortened the song to around two-and-a-half minutes or so and recorded everything to four-track cassette tape for an authentic sound. For the instrumentation, instead of using electric guitars primarily, we swapped them for acoustics, with the fuzz from the '60s Maestro fz-1a (through a Silvertone 1448) appearing only here and there. We added the Danelectro baby sitar and a low Hammond drone through a Leslie rotating speaker for that elusive extra touch. 'Moonlight Love' lyrically is a result of my interest in occult literature and practices, particularly sex magick in this instance. For the recording, the notion was to follow the lines of 'Tell Me' to a degree, as this song was intended to be the flip side for this single from the get-go.
