Originally formed in 1993 by ex-Fu Manchu singer Patrick Brink, the band has featured a revolving set of collaborators, with ex-Monster Magnet guitarist Ed Mundell playing leads on the 'Joy Of Navigation' mini-album. David Catching (QOTSA, Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Pop) co-produced the tracks with Brink, as well as playing synth on the recording. Mike Amster (Nebula, Mondo Generator, Spoon Benders) plays drums on the mini-album. The current live line-up includes Mingus on drums, bassist Jason Hernandez and lead guitarist Derek Christiansen. The band is Volume and it deals primarily in density: thick and weighty as the abundant sand surrounding their Twentynine Palms, CA hometown, but also comprised of a mass of fine grit that can sear the skin with a gust of wind, and quickly dissipate into the ether. Yes, that is to say, Volume are purveyors of heavy acid rock. Doomy psychedelia, but with more raw '70s punk brash than masquerading metal. Volume draw musical influences from bands such as The Stooges, MC5 and Black Flag to name a few, while also crafting their own distinctive heavy psychedelic identity. And, with 'Joy Of Navigation,' the band ventures into heavier, more psychedelic tones, while also keeping powerful hooks as the focus. Only 250 copies on heavy 180gr transparent vinyl in gatefold sleeve.

Like many Birch Book/In Gowan Ring fans, we have been waiting for new releases from B'ee. This is a release of a live recording, which has been in the works for over 10 years. The concert was recorded thirteen years ago, in August 2011, when IFP and friends invited their beloved B'ee to visit them in Siberia, where they were based at that far time. 'Live In Siberia' is a 70-minute immersion in the friendly atmosphere of a small chamber hall and enjoyment of those songs that you probably know by heart. 'The Boat Of The Moon,' 'The Wandering Boy,' 'White Angel,' 'The Trip Goes On,' 'The Seer And The Seen,' 'Dandelion Wine'... if you remember these songs, we don't need to explain anything. And if you haven't heard them yet, we can only envy you. Artwork by Anton Bogdanov, known for his incredible work for Maeror Tri, Eden Ahbez, Neutral, Peter Ulrich, and many others.

NELSON, JOE D. - ICED CHERRIES
Joe D. Nelson (aka Jody Nelson) trades in a perverse Americana articulated via a novelist's eye for detail, a poet's love of the liminal, playful surrealism, and sci-fi morality. His characters are of this place yet are utterly mystified by their trappings. Some of them are amphibious. Others are lost to circumstance. There are cowboys confused by horses. A man in a "tap water suit." Nelson cut his songwriting teeth via his former outfit, Through The Sparks, a Birmingham, Alabama garage band. With his solo debut, 'Iced Cherries,' Nelson inverts his past techniques by abandoning electric guitars and ProTools in favor of deft fingerpicking on an acoustic guitar and recording live to analog tape. As for influences, one might hear shades of Bruce Cockburn, whom he recently covered on the latest volume of 'Imaginational Anthem' on Tompkins Square. More often than not, 'Iced Cherries' sounds like an unholy alliance of Fred Neil, Joe Pass, Thomas Pynchon, and David Berman. At its core, 'Iced Cherries' is a deconstruction of singer-songwriter tropes. He wrote a song in every key - and each of those songs slyly slaughters a sacred cow musically or lyrically. Sometimes both. Even the album cover is a wink. But these are folk songs in that all folk songs are of their time - and these are very weird times.

This is the first-ever collection of recordings by Bristol, UK's highly underrated Shakane. Double album, 23 tracks and 3 are previously unreleased, clocking in at 75 minutes. It boggles the mind that no one has bothered to gather all these amazing tracks in one place. Shakane originally released two now-pricey LP's. One, only released in Italy, and another only available in Sweden. In addition to their two long-players, they put out several singles on several labels. It's no wonder their legacy has been sorely under-served - until now. In modern times they are mostly known for their songs 'Love Machine' and 'Gang Man,' but there is so much more to explore. This has singles, deep album cuts and the aforementioned unreleased tunes. This 2LP encompasses nearly their entire discography. We left off a few of their acoustic numbers in favor of three superb previously unreleased tacks: 'Lazy River,' 'Save Me' and 'Lola.' Shakane was never tied down to one particular genre. Bubblegum, power pop, glam, psych, harmony-based folk, etc. They did it all. Music of this quality never stays buried forever. Informative liners by Steve Krakow complete the package. 500 copies on black vinyl.

They are carefree and safely hidden up in their tower, or are they really? 'Ivory Tower' draws clear parallels from 'The Masque Of The Red Death' by Edgar Allan Poe. No matter how wealthy or safely sealed behind castle walls, one cannot elude death. The music is as fast-paced and aggressive as it is energetic and melodic, bringing you along on sonic rollercoaster ride. The common thread is maintained throughout the album, but changes perspective between several of the songs as the narrator's voice also changes.

In many ways, the album serves as the tail of a creative comet that in just two years included the "classic line-up" trilogy of 'Bee Thousand,' 'Alien Lanes,' 'Under The Bushes, Under The Stars' and countless singles that crammed endless hooks in their grooves. In the intervening space,
'Tonics And Twisted Chasers' has taken on a mythic status. It's arguably Pollard's strangest, gnarliest, most enlightened record and also the fans first chance to see the stitches that bind his galaxy of songs. It's like peering at the caliber inside a watch, responsible for making the whole enterprise tick. This nineteen-song collaboration with guitarist Tobin Sprout could be interpreted as spontaneous sketches, late-night improvisations, ideas that blossomed later in the timeline ('Knock 'Em Flyin'' and 'Key Losers'), but as with anything in Pollard's orbit, its intention is clear when heard as a cohesive whole. The Pollard tenet that "less is more" is on full display here. The songs rarely creep past ninety seconds and coalesce much like Pollard's collage-styled visual art. Black vinyl edition.

Now joining Jackpot Record's ever-expanding collection of Martin Denny reissues is the hypnotic "visual sound" of 'Exotic Percussion,' which has not been on vinyl since its original release in 1961. His production on 'Exotic Percussion' is ambitious, adventurous, and fascinatingly futuristic, especially when a tumbler with ice was still the preferred way to let loose. Long before Denny started heading into outer space with his Moog work, he was keeping us just floating slightly above the ground with the sounds of the earth-and 'The Enchanted Sea' is one of his most grounded and beautiful works. Unlike many of his other exotica records (which are filled with the sound of the jungle, its wildlife, and the smell of the tiki bar smoke) this one has the feeling of a tumbler full of ice, walking barefoot on a sandy beach in the twilight, while breathing in the salt air. There are early glimpses here of where he was starting to head with psychedelic-treated pianos, ethereal female vocals, and abstract orchestration beginning to find their way into the listener's ears. It's an album that seems less comical than some of his earlier work, with an allure more from the heart, without the heartbreak (even though the occasional tinge of wistfulness surrounds it). Out of print since the 1960s. Comes on green vinyl.

COLTRANE, ALICE - WORLD GALAXY
World Galaxy is the sixth solo album by Alice Coltrane recorded in November 1971 in New York City, and released in 1972 by Impulse! Records. On the album, Coltrane appears on piano, organ, harp, tamboura, and percussion, and is joined by saxophonist Frank Lowe, bassist Reggie Workman, drummer Ben Riley, timpanist Elayne Jones, and a string ensemble led by David Sackson. Violinist Leroy Jenkins also appears on soloist on one track, and Swami Satchidananda provides narration. World Galaxy features a trilogy of original compositions bookended by "My Favorite Things" and "A Love Supreme", two pieces for which her husband John Coltrane was known. It was the second in a series of three albums (following Universal Consciousness and preceding Lord of Lords) on which Coltrane appeared with an ensemble of strings.
