And this is not surprising, since, from 1973 to 1974, only a few tracks of the band were recorded under the artistic direction of Arsen Kitanov. Thanks to the All-union recording studio these compositions subsequently saw the light in the format of two EPs. On this 7" are the two most powerful compositions (both energy and drive-wise), which are a synthesis of beat, folk and psychedelic rock. Instead of their former lenghty improvisations, their tracks were now tightly arranged. Their only album, 'Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee', which was inspired by Dee Brown's book of the same title and deals with the expulsion and extermination of native North Americans, features three American Indian lyrics (translated into English) and received good reviews without exception. The LP was released in 1973 on WEA/Warner Bros., while in 1995 a really bad bootleg CD was released by Germanofon, and in 2012 a bootleg LP on blue vinyl. On all these records the tracks are mistakenly in the wrong order. This has been corrected now. The vinyl re-issue is limited and numbered and comes with a four-page insert in LP size. It was followed up by, 'Box Of Secrets: Northern Gothic 2' (Hidden Agenda) in 2007. When Laura Weller and Jeff Kelly were thinking about where their next project might go, Laura introduced the idea of writing songs inspired by childhood. She had grown up in a neighborhood called Phantom Lake, memories of which eventually inspired four songs on this record. Jeff also drew from youth, remembering trips to Lost Lake, about twelve miles out of Shelton, Washington, where relatives had a cabin, as well as many vacations to the Washington coast over the years. Eric Lichter remembers a family from his past in the song, 'The Rosebergs,' about a catastrophic tsunami roaring in off of the Pacific. These are the same landscapes that populated many of the songs on the two previous 'Northern Gothic' albums. The grey skies, the endless evergreens, the "black and blue moon" and "a thousand crows" which hang over small lakeside or West Coast towns populated by the lonesome, the unlucky-in-loves and even a few slightly eerie children. This is a dark album. It is about obsession and sorrow and murder and too much whisky. The characters that permeate these songs exist in the shadows, often in the margins of society. Iconoclastic Afghan-American street music project Naujawanan Baidar makes its long anticipated return with 'Khedmat Be Khalq,' its third album and first new release in three years. Originally planned as a "studio debut" in the classic sense, a veritable avalanche of setbacks tangled and delayed the recording process over a span of several years as compounded tragedies - both international and personal - disrupted the project's intended transition from simply being a ramshackle demo/home-recording outlet for founder N.R. Safi (The Myrrors, et al) into a properly working band. At the end of the day the process of assembling what would eventually become "Khedmat Be Khalq" became a lot like that of the previous two releases: gnarled and sun-baked tracks cut up and collated into a blown out collage of sound. If there is any obvious difference this time around it is perhaps to be found in the increased focus of the material. Whereas the group's previous two projects ran the gamut from sparse acoustic improvisations to tape-loop-inspired noise, 'Khedmat Be Khalq' presents a more unified hybrid of Afghan folks styles and electric energy, further exploring Safi's "maximalist minimalism" approach. Tape-saturated and over-amplified Afghan rubab, armonia, and ghichak meet pounding multi-layered rhythms that at times hint at 1970s-1980s industrial music or the heady throb of German krautrock groups like Faust or Amon Düül. Perhaps nowhere is this unique combination more striking than in Naujawanan Baidar's swirling re-arrangement of the Afghan folk classic 'Raftim Az Ayn Baagh' that closes the album. The rubab melody that serves as the song's core is warped into something that in all honesty wouldn't sound particularly out of place spun between early Savage Republic and Crash Worship. Lyrically the album moves away from the more abstract and impressionistic style of Safi's earlier material towards a concrete attempt to address the struggle of the Afghan masses from the complicated perspective of the international diaspora. The songs here work to draw out and examine the contradictions and challenges faced by a people once again locked in the talons of a sociopathic religious fundamentalism, connecting the country's position to the current global fight against imperialism, militarism, and resurgent fascism, and attempting to recover obscured historical fragments and lessons surrounding the proud radical history of Afghanistan's diverse population over countless decades of intensive struggle. On the one hand it contains one of the deepest solo guitar ragas he has ever recorded ('Vic's Raga') and on the other hand there's his self-proclaimed 'dashboard slapper,' the catchy and suprisingly radiofriendly 'Beautiful Ride.' And there are more twists and turns like the loose/tight folkrocker '(Packin' In For The) Train Of Doomsday' with its noodling Westcoast-style electric guitar ornaments. There's more electric guitar on the driving bluesy folkrocker 'Shards Of Love,' which deals with trying to make a living on your own in this beast called the music industry. The heartbreaker here is 'Buddy.' A song written in the heat of the moment, right after the passing of a dearly loved four legged friend. The album finishes with an ode to the legendary UK singer-songwriter and guitarist Michael Chapman who is/was a great inspiration. Since 'Time Thief' Dijkema has been improving his recording abilities and it shows on 'After Thunder Sun.' It's also his most band orientated album, although it's solely Dijkema playing all the instruments. Creatively, 'After Thunder Sun' expands his musical colors. It keeps one curious in what lies ahead for him. Not at least for the creator himself. What a beautiful ride it is. 	0548586 7" WSW 13 2090505485868 WAP SHOO WAP	COVIDS/NESTTER DONUTS - BANNED FROM THE USA The lyrics to 'Banned From The USA" are based on a true story. In 2023 the Amsterdam-based punk band The Covids were supposed to go on their first USA tour. Because of a mistake with the visa of two band members, things quickly went from bad to worse in their encounter with the American border police and this resulted in them both being banned from entering the country in the future. The tour was cancelled. The two remaining members who did enter the USA had nothing else to do, but to go into the studio to write and record a song about it. Together with their (would-be) touring buddy and Spanish one-man band Nestter Donuts, they laid down the tracks while drinking away their sorrows at Savannah Studios. The recordings were done by Ignacio Gonzalez, owner of Lolipop Records. Once back in Amsterdam, The Covids re-recorded the song together with the two band members that got banned at Slachthuis Studio. This track was recorded by Bart van Hasselt (Asbest Boys). 	0541094 7" DIS 195 0643859195079 DISCHORD	MINOR THREAT - OUT OF STEP OUTTAKES In January 1983, Minor Threat went into the studio for the first time as a five-piece (Brian Baker had moved from bass to second guitar and Steve Hansgen was now playing bass). They had six new songs that would became the 'Out Of Step' 12" EP. The band had also decided to re-record the song 'Out Of Step' with some extra language to try to clarify the lyrics, as well as 'Cashing In', a tongue-in-cheek song about the DC punk scene which they had only played live once. After much debate, 'Cashing In' was added as a hidden track on the original vinyl release though not listed on the cover or label. There was still blank tape on the reel, so they decided to record an instrumental with the working title 'Addams Family' and then recorded new versions of 'In My Eyes' and 'Filler' to hear what they sounded like with two guitars. 'Addams Family' ended up being used as a coda to 'Cashing In', but the other two songs were never mixed and largely forgotten for over 35 years. Singers and players came to Congo's capital Léopoldville, from all over Central Africa - from the streets of Brazzaville on the opposite shore of the Congo river to the vast plateau of Mbanza Congo in Angola, from the mineral rich areas of Lubumbashi (Elizabethville) in the Deep South to the lively docks of Kisangani (Stanleyville) in the northeast, from the rocky wastes of Mbandaka (Coquilhatville) in the West to the majestic forests of Bukavu (Costermansville) in the East. Léopoldville became a cauldron of musical syncretism between the African rhythms that arrived with these musicians and the European, Caribbean and Cuban tunes that were popular in the big city. The new sounds were recorded for one of the big five Congo labels: Opika, Loningisa, Esengo, Olympia or Ngoma. None of the other Congolese labels better showcased the energy, variety and spirit of this era than the Ngoma label. The label was founded by the Greek Nicolas Jéronimidis in 1948. After his early death in 1951, it was further developed by Nikis Cavvadias and Alexandros Jéronimidis. During its existence, from 1948 until 1971, Ngoma made over 4500 recordings, creating a crucial cultural legacy. Now with Unesco declaring Congolese rumba as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity as of December 2021, it is fitting they are restored to the ears of the world. Includes tracks by G. "Gabor Szabo exploded onto the American jazz scene in the early sixties. His unusual approach and unique sound brought something startling and new to jazz. With Chico Hamilton, Charles Lloyd and Gary McFarland, Szabo offered something few in jazz had ever heard before: guitarist as enchanter and conjurer and musician as storyteller and mesmerist. Once Szabo declared his independence in 1966, he also proved how seamlessly jazz can blend the Beatles and Bacharach with Latin and Indian styles. The guitarist released a string of albums on Impulse that challenged many assumptions about jazz and stand out today as some of the most radical, yet appealing music of the period. But the times were woefully a-changing. Szabo biographer Károly Libisch considers the year 1969 a "turning point" for the guitarist. The spell Szabo weaved in the press was beginning to wane. The blizzard of coverage he generated in the previous few years began to trickle off. Perhaps the rise of rock -and rock-guitar heroes- tamped down the guitarist's exotic allure and faddish charm. Then, too, Szabo's erratic behavior started attracting poor notice and hastened the demise of his storied quintet, featuring guitarist Jimmy Stewart and percussionist Hal Gordon, in late 1968. Now, both Gabor Szabo, the artist, and businessman, needed a hit. '1969' was his response to the call of 1969. The album was released in August 1969, and initial reviews were positive. Significantly, the first of these, 'The Sorcerer' (1967), remains the most popular album in the guitarist's all-too abbreviated discography. But there were also 'More Sorcery' (1968) and 'Gabor Szabo Live With Charles Lloyd' (1974), offering Szabo totally in his element and at his bewitching best. Several more of Szabo's concert recordings have surfaced in the intervening years, including this one, superbly captured for radio broadcast live in 1976 at the 600-seat Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio. It is a revelation. There is a sense here that concert patrons may have been hearing an altogether different Gabor Szabo than record buyers. For one thing, Szabo is heard fronting what is likely his own group, rather than an army of studio musicians. In 1976, Szabo was leading a tremendous quartet with George Cables (or Joanne Grauer) on piano, Tony Dumas on bass and Sherman Ferguson on drums. Szabo had not had a band with this much jazz clout since his famed quartet with Jimmy Stewart in 1967-68 - and it is a union worth savoring: Szabo's records during this period were light, at best, on jazz. It's unclear if any of these musicians are on the Agora date, but as Dumas's 'It Happens' opens the program, it's a good bet, at least, that the bassist is on board here. But as Szabo's '76 quartet is not known to have recorded a studio record, 'Live In Cleveland' is the closest thing to what a mid-seventies Szabo jazz album would sound like. Gone, are the strings, vocals, and concessions to commercial consideration so prevalent on so many of Szabo's studio records at the time. What is present, though, is fine craftsmanship, tremendous interplay, and the exciting improvisation that good jazz always yields. This particular concert was part of Sansui's 'New World of Jazz,' a series of 13-hour-long jazz concerts recorded at Cleveland's iconic Agora Ballroom and broadcast over 40 FM radio stations. The series was sponsored by Sansui Electronics, a Japanese manufacturer of audio and video equipment, which previously sponsored a similar series of rock concerts recorded at the Agora as well. Sansui was promoting its matrix QS 4-channel sound system - offering, what was considered at the time, superior diagonal separation and stereo compatibility. The firm, partnering with Agora Ballroom and Agency Recording Studio owner Hank LoConti (1929-2014), was looking to take advantage of what they rightly felt was the then-current jazz renaissance. Each show's 16-track master tape was mixed through the Sansui QS 4-channel encoder, according to an August 1976 Billboard article detailing the arrangement, for distribution to the 40 FM stations throughout the United States that bought the series - allowing for three commercial spots for local dealers to advertise.
