This Italian '70s act featured a.o. Giacomo 'Mino' di Martino (known from a.o. I Giganti) and his wife, actress and singer Edda 'Terra' di Benedetto. The music on their Kraut-influenced self-titled album, first released in 1978, is dominated by Terra's fascinating, improvised vocals and Mino's keyboards, creating amazing space sounds reminiscent of those from 1950s and 1960s science fiction B-movies. This reissue (500 copies) comes with reproduced original artwork, a poster, three inserts and a bonus 7-inch record! Very, very nice!

Rubinho e Mauro Assumpçao's 'Perfeitamente, Justamente Quando Cheguei' has to be up there as one of the finest Brazilian-psych-folk-MPB records. Unfortunately, it's very hard to find in the wild; even on digging trips to Brazil, an original copy rarely shows up, and when it does, it comes with a hefty price tag. This highly sought-after rarity was released on the Brazilian label Tapecar Records in 1972 and is the one and only album by the sensational pairing of Rubinho and Mauro Assumpçao. Effortlessly blending folk, MPB, funky-psych, rock, and relaxed, swaggering samba, this record ought to be heralded as a true Brazilian classic. However, maybe due to its scarcity and the previous reissue predominantly being only available to the Brazilian market, it has not had a chance to fully shine and find the wider audience it deserves. Through Mr Bongo's reissue they hope to put things right. Fans of records by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges are sure to enjoy the same magic and allure in 'Perfeitamente, Justamente Quando Cheguei.' In addition to being the album's songwriters, Mauro Assumpçao took on the role of producer and Rubinho was co-producer as well as playing piano, organ, acoustic guitar and performing vocals. The record features the drummer Gegê who worked with Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Nana Caymmi, Dom Um Romao and more. It also features guitarist Rick Ferreira, who played with Erasmo Carlos, Gal Costa and other greats. Rounding off the players on the album are Darcy Da Cruz and Formiga who have graced many a fine recording on horns. Amazing previously unreleased 1976 recordings by psychedelic progsters Blat Brut. Strongly influenced by the works of Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, John Mayall, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull, the band melted all their influences into a unique sound and delivered extended heady instrumental jams with a tight, ferocious drum and bass basis, far-out guitar pyrotechnics and psyched-out flute arrangements. This band was not only formed by its four musicians, their line-up also included two sound engineers who built their equipment and created the sound effects heard on the instruments. They where also responsible for these recordings from 1976, which are unearthed here for the first time ever. Think of a mindexpanding instrumental version of Pan & Regaliz, add some spicy bits of the early Jade Warrior's fuzz guitar, some elements from Skin Alley's first LP, or the Canterbury way of deconstructing instrumental passages, and you'll get a close idea of what these young kids were doing in their small rehearsal room in Barcelona's mid seventies. For the joy of all mindexpanding progressive jam lovers, here's a beautiful vinyl reissue with a paste-on cover and a gatefold insert moffering plenty of photos and notes by the band's flutist Anton Serra. BOOK OF AM - PART V: NIGHT
The Book of AM is a collection of inspirational songs, poems and stories composed in different parts of the world through the millennia up to the present day and edited and set to music and graphics by Juan Arkotxa and Leslie MacKenzie. The Book expresses core themes from Eastern and Western philosophical and religious traditions and it follows the cycle of day with five parts - 'Dawn', 'Morning', 'Afternoon', 'Evening' and 'Night'. When the Book was first published in 1977 the incomplete Part V, 'Night', was not incorporated into the four part publication (Part I published in Paris 1978, and Parts I, 2, 3, and 4 were published by Wah-Wah Records in 2004 and 2010). At last the final part 'Night' has been completed and is presented here as the conclusion of this long project. Recordings from that time, 1977, were used, and combined with musical and technical collaboration, mainly from oG, (introduced to Wah Wah by the member of the Book of AM team Will Z and also part of the Belgium group Cosmic Trip Machine) who joined for this project and has brought his own form of genius to the mix, adding, along with Will Z, extra overdubs to the original recordings, as well as making an invaluable contribution to the composition, mixing and mastering by which a sound different from the previous AM albums was achieved, more ethereal and informal but at the same time surprising and powerful which steps out of the standard songs format and creates a befitting space for the nocturnal and final mood of this project.

Recorded in the late '70s and early '80s by Juan Arkotxa, Leslie MacKenzie and Carmeta Mansilla, and previously only (partly) issued on cassette, 'The Book Of Intxixu' basically is the follow-up to the magnificent 'Book Of Am'. Once again, 'Book Of Intxixu' is a combination of illustrations and ethereal trip/acid-folk. For this project the trio recorded about three hours of music, from which the highlights (some heavier and more electric than probably expected!) are now brought together on this DOUBLE-LP. Among the guests we find Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth, while Cosmic Trip Machine's Will Z, oG, Majnun and Sammy helped Juan and Leslie to rescue the material and shape it into this gorgeous set. The accompanying illustrations are included in a 24-page booklet. This release is manufactured in an edition of 500 units.

Another lost gem of French underground music, Delired Cameleon Family was originally conceived as the soundtrack to Pierre Clementi's "Visa de censure n§ X", and was originally released as an LP in 1975. It was a host of reputed experimentalists who took charge of producing this soundtrack. Under the direction of Cyrille Verdeaux we found the likes of Yvan Coaquette (Msica Electrnica Viva, Spacecraft...), Gilbert Artman (Lard Free, Urban Sax...), Christian Boul, Tim Blake (Gong, solo recordings...), Ariel Kalma (Heldon, solo recordings), Jean-Claude d'Agostini, Franois Jeanneau, Jean Padovani, Olivier Pamela, Joël Dugrenot, Antoine Duvernet, Aude Cornillac and Valrie Lagrange. Cyrille Verdeaux was, of course, the main force behind the better known French band Clear Light. Verdeaux was born the 31st of July of 1949 in Paris. At the age of 15 he became a student at the French National Conservatory of Music, specialising in studies of harmony, composition and piano. He won three times the first prize in student composition. After the 1968 student riots he left the Conservatory to join a band as a keyboardist. In 1972 he released "Clearlight Symphony", thus forming the band Clear Light to tour through Europe perfroming his symphony. Clear Light would release three more LPs through the 70's, and also the soundtrack to "Visa de censure". The music form Delired Cameleon Family, as it has been told somewhere, "is the synthesis of piano's technical, epic scales, psychedelic wah wah guitar sounds and electronic cosmic, molecular machines arrangements."

After having served in the rich Swedish beat scene of the '60s, as a member of The Ghostriders and We 4 a.o., at the end of the decade Hans Edler became one of the pioneers of European psychedelic electronic experimentation. His 'Elektron Kukeso' LP is a landmark in the genre. Released in 1971, it featured his explorations in electronic avant-garde music during the period 1969-1971. LAIR (pronounced "lah-eer," a local dialect for the Indonesian word of 'lahir', meaning `birth' or, roughly 'being born') is a 6-piece psych-soul/funk outfit hailing from Jatiwangi, West Java, Indonesia. In 'Ngélar,' the sextet's sophomore LP, deeper social narratives and more intimate subject matters are more apparent. In which they speak a lot about 'tanah' or 'land/soil,' owing a lot to the fact that their hometown, Jatiwangi's history of being the country's largest producer of clay/terracotta-based products. The people in Jatiwangi's intertwining relationship with 'tanah' is simply unparalleled... even their instruments are mostly made of terracotta. From the reimagining of their hometown's past glories, LAIR, along with singer/songwriter Monica Hapsari (who co-wrote and co-composed three songs in the album) and Go Kurosawa (Kikagaku Moyo) helming the project as the producer, sings about the rituals and traditions of harvest, to sending off prayers towards their once-prospering land and the ruins of what was once a dense forest in Jatiwangi, which they are currently trying to reclaim while racing with the massive wave of industrialisation. It is a contextually-sorrowful album as much as it is a candid, cheery commemoration of the band members' everyday life in today's northern shores of Java, Indonesia. Ngélar is one of the words that might be able to describe the essence of LAIR as a group. The word itself can be traced back to the locals' culture of 'going around in celebration of something.' In their village, ngélar simply means a traveling performance, in which the performers would play music and go around the village, greeting the people around them as they move from place to place, or simply within their immediate surroundings, indicating that there is something nearby that is being celebrated. LAIR is simply in love with 'journey,' 'time,' and all of their interactions. Ngélar, for them, is a representation of their journey. How they go around, interacting and communicating, to celebrating and making sense of everything that is going on within and around them. For LAIR, 'Ngélar' is a method, a creative process, and, as an album, a culmination of each of their journeys since the group's founding.

Recorded in 1971 and originally only issued in France by CBS, the first LP by post-SPOILS OF WAR band Mormos is a masterpiece of fabulous experimental psychedelic acid folk sounds and bizarre melodies. Influences from contemporaries such as The Incredible String Band are present, as are some resemblances to the music of f.i. Comus or Dr. Strangely Strange. Mormos nevertheless created unique athmospheres which were (and are) unheard in other music of the era. Jim Cuomo formed Mormos after the demise of his Spoils Of War project. The new group moved from the USA to France, where they recorded two albums. The first was 'Great Wall Of China', which now gets reissued in cooperation with Cuomo himself. The LP was originally released on the legendary Gump label and features the mythical musicians Heinar Heckscher and Johnny Mowinckel. Side 1 is sung in English and side 2 in Swedish. The band name got mixed up many times by collectors and was thought to have been either Telefon Paisa (an earlier incarnation of the band) or Telefon (the album title), but this reissue sets the record straight and tells the true story. The LP is manufactured in a limited edition of 600 copies and includes a fine booklet with lots of previously unpublished photos and in-depth liner notes.

But even with such vast archives to draw from, quite a lot of great songs have gone undiscovered for nearly half a century -- particularly in genres that lacked hifalutin arty pretense. Previously, only the most extremely dedicated and passionate record collectors had the stamina and prowess to hunt down long forgotten wonders in dusty record bins -- often hoarding them in private collections, or selling at ridiculous collector's prices. Legendary compilations like 'Nuggets,' 'Pebbles,' ad nauseum, have exhausted the mines of early garage rock and proto-punk, keeping alive a large cross-section of underground ephemera. However, few have delved into and expertly archived the wealth of proto-metal, pre-stoner rock tracks collected on 'Brown Acid.' Lance Barresi, owner of L.A.-based Permanent Records and Permanent Records Roadhouse has shown incredible persistence in tracking down a stellar collection of rare singles from the '60s and '70s for the growing compilation series. Partnered with Daniel Hall of RidingEasy Records, the two have assembled a selection of songs that's hard to believe have remained unheard for so long.

Lucky number 17? You better believe it. We here at 'Brown Acid' have been scouring the highways and byways of America for even more hidden stashes of psych/garage/proto-punk madness from the so-called Aquarian Age. There's no flower power here, though-just acid casualties, rock stompers and major freakouts. As always, the songs have been officially licensed, and all the artists get paid. Kicking off this trip, Grapple's 'Ethereal Genesis' is a heavy psych gem from 1969 written by J. Bruce Svoboda, a.k.a. Jay Bruce, formerly of The Hangmen and The Five Canadians (who were actually the same San Antonio band). The latter's 1966 garage favorite 'Writing On The Wall' has been endlessly covered, but Grapple were never heard from again. With a guitar riff that blatantly rips off Sabbath's 'Black Sabbath,' Image's mostly instrumental lysergic obscurity 'Witchcraft '71' (originally unveiled that very year) also boasts a horror-movie organ intro, a voodoo drum break and some championship chanting. Private press heads might recall late Image drummer John Beke from his '80s reemergence with country rockers Crossfyre. Stone Hedge were a seven-piece rock band out of Michigan with a penchant for Creedence and anthropomorphism. 'Smokey Bear' is their 1972 tribute to the official mascot of the U.S. Forest Services -not to mention the A side of their sole single- and it recalls the kind of organ-drenched swamp jam that soundtracked many a Burt Reynolds flick back in the day. If you think being a Southern rock band from Milwaukee doesn't make much sense, that's probably why Crossfire changed their sound along with their name -to Bad Boy- after signing with United Artists. Bad Boy's severely underappreciated second album, 'Back To Back,' is a 1978 hard rock jewel, but you can hear their boogie-woogie roots on this rare 1975 single. With a band name like Primevil and song title like 'Too Dead To Live,' you probably expect some gnarly proto-metal riffage. Instead, you a get a harmonica-drenched, soul-infused rock rave-up from 1972. Primevil would release their sole LP two years later: Entitled 'Smokin' Bats At Campton's,' it's a reference to their trusty singer, harp player (and bat smoker?), Dave Campton.
'Brown Acid' regulars already know Pegasus from their appearance with 'The Sorcerer' on our Seventh Trip. 'Ready To Rave' is the flipside to that 1972 single, in which they explain how they like their whiskey cold and their women hot. It's another killer glimpse of what might have been if these one-and-done Baltimore hard rockers had been able to keep it together. One of two obscure singles released by Texas musician Bobby Mabe in 1969 (the other appears under the name The Outcasts), 'I'm Lonely' delivers a heavy dose of vocal soul to the otherwise psych-garage presentation. Fans of fellow Houstonians the Moving Sidewalks -whom Bobby and his Outcasts may well have gigged with- will especially dig this one. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, may not be known as a cultural mecca, but they did give us Truth & Janey. This deadly hard rock trio delivered their holy grail full-length, 'No Rest For The Wicked,' back in 1976. 'Around And Around' is a Chuck Berry cover that originally appeared on a 1973 single the band released under the earlier name Truth. Originally released in 1973, 'High School Letter' is the debut single from San Diego rock squad Glory. This infectious bonehead cruncher features future Beat Farmer Jerry Raney and the original rhythm section of Iron Butterfly in bassist Greg Willis and drummer Jack Pinney. Glory is what they got up to after their former bandmates left for L.A.'s garden of Eden. 'Jack The Ripper' is a mercilessly bootlegged Cleveland classic from 1978 with a serrated punk edge and vocals that recall Mick Blood of Aussie savages the Lime Spiders. Or maybe it's the other way around - the Lime Spiders formed the year after Strychnine carved off this lethal paean to the infamous Whitechapel slasher of olde.

'FRÄLST!: SWEDISH CHRISTIAN GROOVES 1969-1979' - This 2LP album collection presents some of the best and unique music that could be found on rare records released by the Swedish Christian communities between 1969-1979. Between doubt and faith, there was way out pop, gospel, funk, heavy rock and psychedelic sounds with wah-wah fuzz guitars and conga rhythms. The common determinator: to spread the Christian message through music. Several of these cuts are from ultra-rare records that are known only to collectors, while others are from records so obscure that only a few copies are known to exist. One can compare some of the musical expressions of the Swedish Free Churches with the burgeoning Swedish "progg" music movement of the time. They share the same experimental musical moods, lyrical messages about love and community, justice, and international solidarity, but the recordings presented here also incorporate the Holy Trinity. Like the man it praised, much of this music was misunderstood in its time. Ton Vlasman recorded this amazing piece of acid euro folk back in 1970, making it sound like an outter space freaked out Bob Dylan with the help of Frans Schoonen (organ, flute and harmonica) and Leo van Vugt (chincha tumba and tambourine). The seven original compositions are stunning, drug inspired psychedelic pieces of acid folk that mix Dylan with Indian ragas and even add some Pink Floyd overtones, yet from an acoustic rather than electric point of view. And the album contains also a very cool version of The Velvet Underground's "Pale Blue Eyes". If you evered wondered how would Dylan have sounded covering The V.U., here's a close example! The album, originally released on the small Flame label from Amsterdam, sold poorly back in the seventies - thus becoming a collector's piece when it was rediscovered in the eighties. Since then it has been gathering new fans that pay small fortunes for a copy, no reissue has been available until now that Wah Wah offers 500 copies in a lavish edition that will probably sell out soon, so grab your copy before it's too late! The beautiful cover art and full color poster insert with the lyrics are the work of Leendert Le Duc, and both are here faithfully reproduced as they deserve. The Wah Wah reissue also features an extra insert with a text by reputed dutch collector Jean Jöbses and a couple of rare unseen period photos courtesi of the Frans Schoonen and Leo van Vugt archives. The album has been carefully remastered by sound wizard Denis Blackham @ Skye Mastering, making these songs sound like never before.

How do you follow up one of the most legendary, yet rarest albums said to signal the birth of doom metal? If you're Randy Holden, you give everyone about 50 years to catch up, then casually drop a tastefully modernized reinterpretation of that sound. 'Population III' picks up where Holden's 1969 solo debut left off, updated with several decades worth of technological advances and personal hindsight. In 2010, the guitarist/vocalist quietly coaxed into recording a followup album by Holden superfan and Cactus member Randy Pratt. Joined by drummer Bobby Rondinelli (who has played with Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Rainbow), the trio cut the 6-song collection of leaden future blues, 'Population III.' "Randy Pratt had written the basic song structures, he understood my music and where I come from quite well," Holden says. "He nailed it."
But the recording was ultimately shelved for over a decade. "A year ago, in 2021 I listened to the songs and was delightfully surprised," Holden says. "I think it's the best album I've ever done." Throughout 'Population III,' Holden effortlessly dishes out squealing, soaring leads and skull-thwacking riffs with his signature low end grit and penchant for Middle Eastern scales. Coupled with Pratt's pocket-locked bass, the slight flanging effect on Rondinelli's drums and his pugilistic beats, the album occasionally brings to mind 'Presence'-era Led Zeppelin, particularly on the 22-minute epic 'Land Of The Sun.' Elsewhere, 'Swamp Stomp' echoes more the troglodyte blues of Holden's older work, with his evermore searing solos showing hints of early Clapton/Hendrix era guitar prowess to drive home the stomp of the song's namesake. At times, Holden sounds reminiscent of Neil Young leading Crazy Horse's ruptured grunge as his lilting falsetto vocals push and pull his guitar's siren's call. Taken as a whole, there's a very distinct difference between the way these veterans of hard rock's formative years carry the songs compared to the more lugubrious riffing of today's young doom purveyors. 'Population III' is the real deal - a powerful continuation of a sound forged 50 years ago, that almost didn't happen. Somehow, Randy Holden's music always finds a way to stand the tests of time.

SVVAMP - SVVAMP 2
Swedish trio Svvamp's self-titled debut was a breath of fresh air - unpretentious and free, primordial homespun classic rock that landed in the Top 20 Albums of 2016 in the Doom Charts consortium of writers and radio. The most common remark being just how genuine and uncontrived it sounded, unlike most bands that posture and mimic the sounds of yesteryear. So, it may be hard to grasp how fully realized the band sounds on 'Svvamp 2', while still sounding as laid back as their debut. Perhaps it can be partly attributed to Svvamp's jump from self-recording on a 4-channel cassette deck to self-recording on a comparatively expansive SIX-channel system. That's two whole more tracks to fill up, folks! The obvious comparison to the groundbreaking psychedelic albums of the late '60s, when artists began experimenting with studios moving from 4, to 8 to 16 tracks, is fitting here too. VARIOUS - BROWN ACID: THE 17TH TRIP
Lucky number 17? You better believe it. We here at 'Brown Acid' have been scouring the highways and byways of America for even more hidden stashes of psych/garage/proto-punk madness from the so-called Aquarian Age. There's no flower power here, though-just acid casualties, rock stompers and major freakouts. As always, the songs have been officially licensed, and all the artists get paid. Kicking off this trip, Grapple's 'Ethereal Genesis' is a heavy psych gem from 1969 written by J. Bruce Svoboda, a.k.a. Jay Bruce, formerly of The Hangmen and The Five Canadians (who were actually the same San Antonio band). The latter's 1966 garage favorite 'Writing On The Wall' has been endlessly covered, but Grapple were never heard from again. With a guitar riff that blatantly rips off Sabbath's 'Black Sabbath,' Image's mostly instrumental lysergic obscurity 'Witchcraft '71' (originally unveiled that very year) also boasts a horror-movie organ intro, a voodoo drum break and some championship chanting. Private press heads might recall late Image drummer John Beke from his '80s reemergence with country rockers Crossfyre. Stone Hedge were a seven-piece rock band out of Michigan with a penchant for Creedence and anthropomorphism. 'Smokey Bear' is their 1972 tribute to the official mascot of the U.S. Forest Services -not to mention the A side of their sole single- and it recalls the kind of organ-drenched swamp jam that soundtracked many a Burt Reynolds flick back in the day. If you think being a Southern rock band from Milwaukee doesn't make much sense, that's probably why Crossfire changed their sound along with their name -to Bad Boy- after signing with United Artists. Bad Boy's severely underappreciated second album, 'Back To Back,' is a 1978 hard rock jewel, but you can hear their boogie-woogie roots on this rare 1975 single. With a band name like Primevil and song title like 'Too Dead To Live,' you probably expect some gnarly proto-metal riffage. Instead, you a get a harmonica-drenched, soul-infused rock rave-up from 1972. Primevil would release their sole LP two years later: Entitled 'Smokin' Bats At Campton's,' it's a reference to their trusty singer, harp player (and bat smoker?), Dave Campton.
'Brown Acid' regulars already know Pegasus from their appearance with 'The Sorcerer' on our Seventh Trip. 'Ready To Rave' is the flipside to that 1972 single, in which they explain how they like their whiskey cold and their women hot. It's another killer glimpse of what might have been if these one-and-done Baltimore hard rockers had been able to keep it together. One of two obscure singles released by Texas musician Bobby Mabe in 1969 (the other appears under the name The Outcasts), 'I'm Lonely' delivers a heavy dose of vocal soul to the otherwise psych-garage presentation. Fans of fellow Houstonians the Moving Sidewalks -whom Bobby and his Outcasts may well have gigged with- will especially dig this one. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, may not be known as a cultural mecca, but they did give us Truth & Janey. This deadly hard rock trio delivered their holy grail full-length, 'No Rest For The Wicked,' back in 1976. 'Around And Around' is a Chuck Berry cover that originally appeared on a 1973 single the band released under the earlier name Truth. Originally released in 1973, 'High School Letter' is the debut single from San Diego rock squad Glory. This infectious bonehead cruncher features future Beat Farmer Jerry Raney and the original rhythm section of Iron Butterfly in bassist Greg Willis and drummer Jack Pinney. Glory is what they got up to after their former bandmates left for L.A.'s garden of Eden. 'Jack The Ripper' is a mercilessly bootlegged Cleveland classic from 1978 with a serrated punk edge and vocals that recall Mick Blood of Aussie savages the Lime Spiders. Or maybe it's the other way around - the Lime Spiders formed the year after Strychnine carved off this lethal paean to the infamous Whitechapel slasher of olde.

The Beatles returned to the BBC Paris Studio on May 1st 1964 for the third of their four 'From Us To You' specials, that would be broadcast later that month. Three of the 10 songs played were by their favourite rockabilly star Carl Perkins. 'Honey Don't' was later recorded for the 'For Sale' album with Ringo on vocals. On this version, however, John sings the lead. 'Sure To Fall' was never committed to wax and features a ska break on the bridge, just like they played on 'I Call Your Name'. This EP spins at 33rpm.

LIQUORICE EXPERIMENT - NOVICE PRETENDER/HOW MANY LIES
The Liquorice Experiment hails from Valencia, Spain and was formed in 2016, initially as a kind of moody, neo-garage-psych outfit. Various musicians came and went, but always around the core of guitarist Bruno Cruañes and singer Alex Amorós. The band issued their own lathe-cut 7" back in 2019 and posted various tracks to their Bandcamp page, all the while playing shows in the UK and Europe. Fast forward to 2022, the band had undergone a slight change in direction, emerging as proponents of a tougher, R & B-based British beat sound. Back in April 2022, the band entered State Records' custom-built 8-track recording facility, North Down Sound, to record an LP's worth of material (which should be out in 2023 on the Spanish Snap!! Records label). State picked 2 of their fave raves to issue as a 45, and here we are! Topside 'Novice Pretender' features Bruno taking the (double-tracked) lead vocal, and is
a classic slice of spiky beat, circa '64/'65, driven by tight propulsive drums and some beautiful heavily reverbed guitar, while the flip, 'How Many Lies' sees Alex taking the
lead vocal, with a more aggressive, gritty vibe... great driving bass and drums from Carlos and Brian respectively, and some fantastic distorto guitar from Bruno! Beautifully presented in a laminated flipback-style card sleeve, plus a super-cool authentic push-out centre on the vinyl itself, this is an audio/visual dream and we can't wait to have it circulating!

Ohio was a hotbed for hard rock at the time with bands like the James Gang, Glass Harp, Poobah, Left End, Damnation Of Adam Blessing... what you get here matches the style any of those bands laid down. Gary's music grabs you immediately and grows over time. Grabber and Grower... best of both worlds style! It makes sense that Gary later owned a recording studio, right out of the gate he was laser focussed on all the aspects involved in making music that stands the test of time. The guitar action is incredible, shards of sound flying free yet hitting the bullseye continuously, vocals confident with none of the macho posturing that ages poorly in much early hard rock. These tracks are all vividly recorded and meticulously mixed in a way that balances fiery performance and intelligent structure to maximum effect. The bass and drumming here are phenomenally inventive and propulsive, the several players involved across the album nail it in their support of Gary's vision. This is rock music born in the 'anything is possible' life affirming energy of the late '60s right on time with where the most enduring artists of the early '70s took it. Had he scored the major label deal he pursued with labels like Mercury or London at the time I am confident we'd be hearing his music on classic rock radio today! The music on this album is both uncompromising and accessible. In particular, the two long tracks 'Wasted King' and 'Starman' have all the moves needed to grab fans of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and the likes by the throat and brain in the extended progressive epic department! Either it's Raven's furious 'Faster Than The Speed Of Light' from their second landmark album 'Wiped Out' (issued in 1982 on Neat Records) or it's 'Axe Crazy' by Bristol's most famous sons Jaguar (released as a 7" single also by Neat Records the same year). Jaguar released their first single 'Back Street Woman' in 1981 via Heavy Metal Records. But before that they had already recorded a highly praised demo cassette.

The tracks highlights how MAKE have grown as a band and become an all round heavier beast, at times suffocatingly so, but then their beauty shows in a track such as the gentle psychedelic progressive The Immortal with stunning clean vocals swaying in the wind. Comparisons are understandably drawn with the likes of Isis, but MAKE arent copyists; theyve taken their post-metal sound and created a very concise record, turning drawn out meandering numbers into shorter songs, enhancing their impact, turning up the brutality, and the beauty that lies within..

Coloured vinyl in gatefold jacket. In the 1970s era of rock's theatrical excesses, Sorcery delivered next level performances in which a battle ensued on stage between illusionists portraying Merlin versus Satan. While Alice Cooper and KISS brought costumes, gore and flashpots to the mainstream, these Los Angeles hard rockers integrated live magic, theatrical drama and fourth wall breaking performance for new heights in musical storytelling. While Sorcery consists of professional musicians - the core group being guitarist Richard (Smokey) Taylor, vocalist Greg Magie and bassist Richie King - two magicians also perform on stage when they play live. The band's nearly immediate local popularity from their debut in 1975 also made them in demand for film and TV. Enter: 'Stunt Rock.' Way before 'Jackass,' before 'Crocodile Dundee,' contemporaneous with 'Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park' and as timeless as classic 'Heavy Metal,' there was 'Stunt Rock.' The 1978 low budget, high concept B-movie integrated hard rock, magic, dangerous stunts and an early form of mockumentary filmmaking into an epic feature film about an Australian stunt man reunited with his American cousin (and Sorcery member) in L.A., and all hell breaks loose. Sorcery composed the soundtrack - which also served as the band's debut album - and were shown performing songs throughout the film. The 'Stunt Rock' soundtrack highlights the sweet spot between the playful, campy occult imagery of the '70s before Satanic Panic and the religious right's kayfabe outrage pushed bands to tone things down in favor of glam pomp. What you get here is pure, knobby occult heavy metal that sounds something like 'Sin After Sin'-era Judas Priest with Robert Plant on vocals, crossed with the melodrama of Alice Cooper and The Who's rock operas. The songs are taut, quickly shifting from part to part, motif to overture. The tunes are infinitely catchy and laden with attention grabbing titles like 'Talking To The Devil,' 'Mark Of The Beast,' 'Stuntrocker' and 'Burned Alive.' On the surface, the film 'Stunt Rock' seems campy and crazy enough to be embraced even if the music weren't all that exciting, but Sorcery proves that their work deserves to be seriously appreciated in the canon of classic rock. Sorcery was founded in 1975, and recently reformed after inking the contract in 2021 with RidingEasy Records for the album reissue. So, rest assured, fans will have the opportunity to hear these songs live, potentially accompanied by magicians as well for the full effect. While they were overlooked in their heyday, Sorcery's 'Stunt Rock' album stands the test of time.

VARIOUS - SCRAP METAL, VOL. 2 (BLACK)
If you were smart enough to get your grubby paws on the first 'Scrap Metal' compilation, you probably have a pretty good idea of what you're in for with our second installment. Featuring long-lost gems from ultra-rare 45s and private press singles-plus one previously unreleased banger - 'Scrap Metal 2' maintains a steady NWOBHM course. Packed with infectious outliers and supremely talented one-and-done metal warriors from the crucial British movement of the late '70s and early '80s (and some killer American obscurities inspired by them), this collection delivers all the fist-pumping, riff-mongering and flashy solos of heavy metal's golden age. As always, every track has been officially licensed and every artist gets paid.
The tracks:
As a late entry into the NWOBHM sweepstakes, JJ's Powerhouse was formed in Merseyside, England, by guitarist Jon "J.J." Cox with members of his previous band, Quad. Much like the opener to the original 'Scrap Metal' comp, you can hear early Metallica coursing through this legendary ripper. Coincidentally, this ultra-rare 45 was released in '83, the same year as 'Kill 'Em All.' Taking their name from a 1978 sci-fi novel by Marion Zimmer Bradley, Welsh super troopers Storm Queen reveled in animal-print clothing and flying Vs. The Motörhead-meets-Priest anthem 'Raising The Roof' is the flipside to their only single, which the band self-released in 1982. Led by guitarist Dave Morse, Storm Queen's earliest lineup included bassist Bryn Merrick (RIP), who would go on to join The Damned. Roaring out of Birmingham, England, in 1975, Jameson Raid palled around with fellow Brummies Black Sabbath and named themselves after a failed 19th century attack that helped kick off South Africa's Second Boer War. Their three-song 1979 debut featured the infectious 'It's A Crime,' which comes across like a deadly hard-glam version of Budgie. Still fronted by vocalist Terry Dark, they're going strong as of 2022. A.R.C., a punky proto-metal group from the UK, released the boozy single 'Home Made Wine' b/w 'The Chase' in 1979 and-as far as we know-were never heard from again. They're not to be confused with a gang of Tolkien enthusiasts also called A.R.C., who released two NWOBHM singles in the early '80s and actually were heard from again. Nonetheless, the A.R.C. we have here was led by a thirsty lad named Klaus Brunnenkant, who liked to rock n' roll all night and party every day. Both sides of Metropolis' sole single bear the legend, "Unauthorized duplication shall result in getting your ass beat." This San Jose metal squad released their only single in 1986 and dedicated it to Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, who had recently been killed in a bus accident. 'The Raven' is the serpentine NWOBHM- and Edgar Allan Poe-influenced flipside to 'Time Heals Everything,' and yeah, you can hear the guitars going out of tune on the solo, but that's part of the charm.
Of the two dozen or so metal bands that have called themselves Prowler over the years, we're pretty sure this particular Prowler is the only one from San Diego. These dudes take a thrashier approach than most of the bands here on 'Scrap Metal 2': 'Temporary Insanity' strikes a deft balance between early Anthrax and early Testament, with just enough hard rock swing to keep it from getting overly staccato. Self-released in '86 as the band's only single, the song is the flip to 'I Love It.'
Not much is known about Christian Steel beyond this: They put out their only single in 1983, which boasted 'Need Your Love' as the flip to 'I Don't Want To.' The former, included here, sounds kinda like a dizzy, more metallic version of '70s Jersey rockers Starz, who famously influenced the likes of Mötley Crüe, Poison and Twisted Sister. Ohio guitarist/vocalist Marty Soski's career dates back to at least 1969 with the Inside Experience track 'Be On My Way,' which we unearthed for 'Brown Acid: The Third Trip.' This time, we've got a monster Soski cut that he recorded under the name Black Rose. Released in 1982, the absolutely smokin' 'Sidewinder' was the A-side on the band's sole single. The main riff isn't far off from Y&T's major-label banger 'Mean Streak,' which was released the following year. When Dark Age titled their 1987 album 'The Youngest Metal Band In The World,' they weren't even sort of kidding. Legend has it that 'Star Trippin',' which was released as a single a year earlier, was written by guitarist CJ Rininger when he was just 12 years old. His brother Dave, the vocalist, was two years younger. Old photos of the band -complete with pineapple haircuts- seem to bear this story out. Either way, the song is pure flash metal, conjuring Sunset Strip sleaze all the way from Ohio. By now, all you heads know Los Angeles magic men Sorcery from their storied appearance in -and soundtrack for- the death-defying Ozploitation flick 'Stunt Rock.' What we have here in 'Whales' is a previously unreleased track from the same 1978 recording sessions. It's a little bit Zeppelin, a little bit prog, and a whole lotta thundering riffage. Why this languished in the vaults for so long is anyone's guess. Better late than never!
