Remixed and remastered reissue of the legendary Orquesta Del Desierto sophomore album. Unable to tour as a group due to commitments to other projects but fueled by the success of the debut release, Brown immediately turned to booking another recording session for the band. Hoping to further expand the group's dynamic sound, Brown and Stahl solicited song contributions from Mike Riley and Country Mark Engel for the second album. While the core of Brown, Stahl, Riley, Engel and Lalli remained intact for the second session, the group's diverse approach benefitted from the addition of drummer Adam Maples (Earthlings?) and percussionist/drummer Pete Davidson. Additionally, the group was joined at famed Joshua Tree studio Rancho de la Luna by pianist Tim Jones and Bill Barrett on trumpet. Released in 2003, 'Dos' was immediately embraced as a "...compelling fusion of Latin stylings and psychedelic-tinged blues that is a real alternative these days" (cosmiclava.com). Bolstered by similar acknowledgements and reviews of their second album, Orquesta Del Desierto committed to a series of performances throughout southern California and a European tour in 2004. Joined by drummer Bryan Brown, these shows have become legendary among the fans who were able to attend the band's only active period of live performances.

VARIOUS - NIPPON ACID FOLK 1970-1980
The birth of Japan's nascent acid folk scene was rooted in the messy and invigorating political climate of the late 1960s. It is a story of Dadaists, communists, pharmacists, and cult leaders, led by a young generation of upstart students, artists, and dreamers hellbent on turning their world upside down. At the forefront of this movement was Yellow Magic Orchestra's Haroumi Hosono, a polymath innovator whose band Happy End released the first Japanese language rock album, and whose influence would go on to be felt across Japanese music for decades. Alongside, and informed by the Kansai scene's Takashi Nishioka and Happy End collaborator Ken Narita, they experimented with cadences and accents of the Japanese language to open the door for others to experiment with their own forms of psychedelic folk too. Charting the decade from 1970 to 1980, 'Nippon Acid Folk' surveys a little explored corner of Japanese music history, but one which ultimately laid the foundations for an independent music industry, launching the careers of Hosono and others in the process. 'Nippon Acid Folk 1970-1980' is pressed on vinyl and represents the start of a deep dive into Japan's rich history of folk and psychedelic soul music.

Q65 were one of the most exciting, rebellious bands to come out of the Netherlands in the 1960s. To their fans -then and now- Q65 represented a way of life. With their music, their
image, their every move and action, these five long-haired ruffians from The Hague rejected conformity and challenged us to follow in their wake. Starting in 1966 they stormed the music scene with the hit singles 'You're The Victor,' 'The Life I Live,' 'I Despise You' and 'World Of Birds,' along with their masterpiece debut album 'Revolution.' Their musical revolution continued through the end of the sixties and into the seventies with outstanding albums like 'Revival,' 'Afghanistan' and 'We're Gonna Make It.' Through breakups, reunions, and numerous line-up changes, they continued to make great music intermittently in the decades that followed, until the tragic death of singer Willem Bieler in November 2000. 'The Life We Live' is the definitive Q65 anthology, presenting their complete recorded works 1966-2000 on 11 CDs, all sourced from the original master tapes. Along with all of the group's
albums and singles, and Frank Nuijens' 1971 solo album 'Rainman,' the collection includes a trove of previously unreleased outtakes, alternate mono and stereo mixes, and rare live recordings. The box also includes a lavishly-illustrated 216-page hardcover coffee table book with detailed liner notes by Mike Stax, along with hundreds of full-colour and black and white photos, and reproductions of picture sleeves, posters, ads, magazine and newspaper articles and other rare Q65 ephemera, some of it sourced from the personal archives of the band members. Ye Ascoyne d'Ascoynes were four Medway wannabes/would-bes who fired their own brand of garage/punk/pop across the land.
Starting in late 1988, The Dentists' Bob Collins and ex-Dentist Ian Greensmith gathered in Medway's legendary 'The Hole' to play some '60s garage punk covers, also roping in Mark Aitken and Kevin Younger to form a firm line-up. After a year of blasting faves from the 'Pebbles' compilations, they decided not only to add in a few 'garaged up' covers of other lost classics, but also delving into writing their very own songs that combined their '60s garage roots with later influences from the likes of Buzzcocks and Pavement. Early 1990, they recorded a demo at Red Studios of six original songs, and a cover. Later that year, Kevin stepped down from the group.
Come 1992, The Ascoynes went back into the studio as a trio to record their one and only single 'Just The Biggest Thing,' with Billy Childish as producer, subsequently releasing it on Billy's Hangman Records label. Early 1993, they went back to Red Studios to record more demos. This album is a result of those two demo recordings. 'Supersonic Shoes' provides prime unreleased early '90s garage from the best Medway band you've never heard of.

While 'Beyond Darkness' was a concept album that propelled listeners into space, whether inner or outer, 'Vale Of The Fallen' brings us back to twisted reality. Their more in-your-face approach should only intensify the experience-much like a walk through a post-apocalyptic landscape in the bleakest imaginable conditions. Sound-wise, Stephen Flam's heavier-than-life riffs, Vas Kallas' sardonic delivery and Tony Pinnisi's keyboards create oppressive atmospheres atop Jason Frantz's powerful drumming, while in contrast Margaret Murphy's violin weaves ghostly motifs. Like its predecessor, 'Vale Of The Fallen' features interludes which provide brief respites between some tracks, only to return to the crushing heaviness in yet another avalanche of sound.

WINTER - INTO DARKNESS
Perpetually out of print, much sought after and universally worshipped amongst those in the know, Winter's 'Into Darkness' was a game-changing classic. Formed in New York circa 1988, Winter played slow, deep and hard nuclear doom with a crust punk rawness, that came across like Hellhammer jamming with Amebix. Their penchant for mammoth sized and funeral-paced, wasteland droning has become a touchstone reference for bands across the whole spectrum of underground metal. Their pre-internet infamy led to Winter demos being tape-traded in hallowed adoration by fans and bands alike, gaining notable fans such as Fenriz from Darkthrone. Deserving of their special place in the pantheon of one-off classic albums, the Swans-like noise and down-tuned Earth-like riffs of 'Into Darkness' went on to spawn countless doom and sludge bands, being an influence for an entire doomed generation. The Winter come-back show at Roadburn Festival in 2011 was massively anticipated and held a captivated audience. Packing out one of The Netherlands largest stages, that particular Winter show, after many years in obscurity is a rare event that is still highly regarded today. The band is a rare jewel amongst collectors, and audiences alike. 'Into Darkness' was a gateway drug to the dark depths of sludge metal, and now awaits a whole new throng of acolytes who bow down before the throne of heavy doom. The South German punk and new wave band Familie Hesselbach caused a sensation between 1980 and 1985, first regionally and then nationwide. They indulged in a deliberate eclecticism from the musical preferences of the individual family members and formed these into their unmistakable sound. Disco, pop, punk, rap, no wave, funk, the main thing it's danceable. The lyrics in German and Italian, later also in English - and always with a wink. Their trademarks were the rousing live quality of the performances and the use of brass instruments, trumpet and clarinet from the beginning - the tenor saxophone was added later. After the releases of Familie Hesselbach's first album '1982' (LP 2020) and the tape 'Froh Zu Sein & 8-EP-Sampler' (double LP 2023), this third LP includes the 1984 EP 'Süddeutschland' and their very last tape 'Der Untergang Des Hauses H.' (1985).

Music composed and performed by Timo Kaukolampi in collaboration with Mira Kautto for a performance by the Finnish Center for New Dance, Zodiak. Featuring vocalization by Ringa Manner, Sara Gurevitsch, Anna Torkkel & Emmi Venna. Limited vinyl pressing of 222 numbered copies. The music of 'BS/BF' has echoes of early Brian Eno and 'Low'-era David Bowie. It has manipulated and textured vocals and low grain dub from early digital delay processors. Material draws influences from the 1970s Berlin school to minimalist masters like Éliane Radigue, yet it all sounds thrillingly new. Starkly beautiful instrumental pieces are layered with bassy depths and glittering peaks, with networks of mazy, centre-less electronic pathways. 'BS/BF' is a fantasy forest and an alternate reality in the form of a dance performance. It is made of dancing, hypnotic music and the color blue. 'BS/BF' is an environment where lights, sounds and dances with no clear place outside of the performance, blend into a mutually unraveling logic. The initial inspiration for the work has been a photo book 'Blå Skog/Blue Forest' (self-published, 2009) by artist Morten Andersen. The book offers a rich imaginary environment, completely different and indifferent to the city surrounding the reader. As a performance 'BS/BF' is alike, both the book and the dance performance function as portals to something different and changing. 'BS/BF' is a continuation of the collaboration between Kautto, Timo Kaukolampi, Jenni Pystynen and Anna Torkkel, which began with 'Station To Station To Station' (2019), also released on Svart Records.

Mona Mur, vocalist of her own class, songwriter, music producer, '80s survivor. Together with Alexander Hacke, FM Einheit, Mark Chung (all of Einstürzende Neubauten) and organ virtuoso Nikko Weidemann (Moka Efti Orchestra) responsible for underground hits such as 'Snake,' '120 Tage' or 'Eintagsfliegen.' She first graced the music scene with the 12" 'Jeszcze Polska' (Supermax 1982) which immediately claimed London's New Musical Express' "Single of the Week" slot: "Her weapons are a passionately bloody voice and a gift for multiligual puns she applies to acerbic commentaries." At the time Mur lived a wild life in Hamburg, Paris and Berlin which shaped her unique and uncompromising musical persona. A violent sound of darkest shades and concerts in manic intensity and morbid slowbeat-chic were foundation stones for her cult image until today. Mona Mur is also a composer and sound designer, her music and soundcapes are to be found in movies like 'Gegen Die Wand' and video games such as 'Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days.'
In summer 1987 Mona Mur met legendary Stranglers musicians JJ Burnel and Dave Greenfield on their compound in beautiful and enchanted East-Anglia to create her first full album 'Mona Mur.' The synth pop pearl with Dave Greenfield's signature and unique keyboard arpeggios and Burnel's brutal and elegant bass lines strongly influencing the production sound was released 1988 by RCA and was celebrated by filmmakers Monika Treut and Elfi Mikesch in their movie 'Die Jungfrauenmaschine' - which contains a MM live performance of the song 'Ritz.' The official 'Ritz' video was shot by Eduard Oleschak in Vienna on Heldenplatz and Hofburg and in Palais Saurau in the city of Graz, Austria. The album also features a special re-recording of 'Surabaya Johnny' using tracks by FM Einheit, Alex Hacke, Nikko Weidemann, Thomas Stern and Siewert Johannsen (the second Mona Mur Band line up) with additional drum tracks by Dave Larcombe ('The Bible'). The 2021 reissue is remastered by En Esch (KMFDM, Pigface), comes in a new running order with a special version of 'Jealous' and a bonus track, 'Venus 2020,' featured as credits's song of the Monika Treut movie 'Genderation' (2021).

MONA MUR - THE ORIGINAL BAND (1984-1986)
Mona Mur, born in Hamburg, met FM Einheit, Alexander Hacke and Mark Chung from Einstürzende Neubauten and Gode B. from Front during the punk explosion. As Mona Mur & Die Mieter they released their first 12" single 'Jeszcze Polska' in '82, which immediately claimed the "Single of the Week" slot by London's New Musical Express. Mona Mur then lived a wild life in Paris and Berlin. In fall 1984, she formed a new Mona Mur band with FM Einheit and Alexander Hacke, joined by Flucht Nach Vorn keyboardist Nikko Weidemann (today Moka Efti Orchestra), Siewert Johannsen (guitar, Stricher) and Thomas Stern (bass, Crime and the City Solution). This Mona Mur Band was recorded and mixed live by Raymond "Nainz" Watts (Einstürzende Neubauten, Psychic TV, KMFDM) at his Building Site studio in Hamburg. The band played acclaimed concerts in Germany and Europe, as well as festivals, such as the renowned Pandora's Box in Rotterdam. Their manically intense live performance in guitar thunderstorms and morbid slowbeat chic and especially their seminal Brecht/Weill interpretations ('Surabaya Johnny,' 'Der Song Von Mandelay' and 'Die Ballade Vom Ertrunkenen Mädchen') are still cult today. The band broke up in spring of '86, and Mona Mur embarked on a solo career. These recordings, made in 1984-1986, had never been released... until now.

MONA MUR - WARSAW
In 1989, before the wall came down, Mona Mur and her producer Dieter Meier (Yello) came to Poland. Under the musical direction of Polish rockstar Grzegorz Ciechowski (Republika) and with renowned Polish musicians, arrangers and the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra, she recorded her album 'Warsaw' in early 1990. "'Warsaw' deals with the old topic of love as a marginal experience. Why does this intrigue me? Because this is how I experienced it at a very young age. There is hardly a more relevant subject for me as an artist, maybe apart from war. Both confront you with the possibility of annihilation." ~Mona Mur. During six months of production in Warsaw, from September 1989 to March 1990, Mona Mur observes historical changes in Europe and the whole world. The recordings take place at Polish Television's studio - 10 songs of great intensity, three of which are given genre-redefining orchestration by Krzesimir Debski. Producer Dieter Meier is enchanted. But 'Warsaw' faces challenges. Its release does not happen as planned. Mona Mur`s record company back then, German RCA, feels the album is not mainstream enough. More illustrious bidders follow, including Stevo Pearce of Some Bizarre, then the album vanishes. In 2000, four of Mona Mur's songs from 'Warsaw' are covered by Polish singer Katarzyna Groniec on her album 'Mezczyzni' (Sony). Producer: Grzegorz Ciechowksi. The album gets high chart rankings, the single with Mona's song 'Paintings' (Polish: 'Dzieki Za Milosc') sells over 70,000 copies. Soon after, in late 2001, producer Gzegorz Ciechowski dies suddenly at the age of only 44, under tragic circumstances. His work as a musician, singer, frontman and rock poet is unique in Poland. An annual memorial concert in the medieval city of Torun, as well as several new interpretations of the 'Republika' hits keep the memory of "Citizen GC" alive. In 2011, Mona Mur is invited to Torun, where she performs live with Grzegorz Ciechowski's band members. Finally, in 2015, Mona Mur's album 'Warsaw' is released by Mystic Productions, but only on CD and exclusively in Poland. Play Loud! continues the publication of Mona Mur's back catalog by releasing the album for the first time on vinyl.

"In 1994, after two albums, the Vulgar Boatmen - the long-distance partnership of two musicians, each leading his own live lineup - faced an uncertain future. Robert Ray, originally from Memphis, was (and is) a professor of film studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dale Lawrence, a former student of his, was living (as he still does) in Indianapolis. An Indiana University grad, he'd previously been a hero in Bloomington's early punk rock scene. Singly and together, they had established the Boatmen's finely honed blend of rhythmic insistence and evocative depth. 'You And Your Sister' (1989) and 'Please Panic' (1992) established the template: enigmatic lyrics from a non-existent short story anthology set to tunes that seemed instantly familiar without quite being so. They had attracted a cult following, some Midwest airplay (acknowledged here with a namecheck for Chicago's WXRT in 'Wide Awake') and a fair bit of critical fervor. (Thanks to Anthony DeCurtis, then the magazine's reviews editor, I was able to give 'Please Panic' four stars in Rolling Stone, calling it "a translucent collection of eloquent beauty and delicate vigor.")" VULGAR BOATMEN - YOU AND YOUR SISTER
Before there was widespread Internet, before YouTube or Pandora or BandSpace, one of two things could happen to a promising rock'n'roll band. A few got national notice if a big label picked them up. The rest, the vast majority, existed, all across the country, in their own private Idahos. In the mid-eighties, college radio stations began to grow in influence, and gradually some of these bands found ways to get the sound of their music directly to potential fans. A few -R.E.M., the Replacements, Hüsker Dü- grew in prominence (slowly). Many others made decent music, got some attention, toured the country a few times with the help of a network of fans' couches, and dropped back out of sight. This is the story of one of those bands. They made not just decent music but wonderful, bottomless, and transcendent music, and at least one great album, a re-release of which is in your hands. Back in the late eighties, new records were sent out to critics and radio people on plain cassette tapes or vinyl LPs a week or two before they were released. None of the myriad avenues available today to spread word of good new music were around, so the recipients actually had to put the cassette in a player or throw the LP on a turntable and listen to what they sounded like. And because it was an adventuresome time, and because some of the bands made difficult music -imagine hearing Pavement for the first time, say, not to mention Hüsker Dü- you often had to listen, really listen, several times or more, to find out what was going on, or, more prosaically, to make sure there wasn't something there you were missing. (It's not a precise analogy, but note how today you have to watch three or four episodes of some of the new high-end TV shows before you get what their creators are up to.) One of those records that were sent out at the time was 'You And Your Sister,' by the Vulgar Boatmen. In those years, remember, rap from acts as diverse as Public Enemy, De La Soul and the Beasties was rampant; Sonic Youth was at its height. By contrast, the sounds on 'You And Your Sister' were in a way vaguely folksy, in another way vaguely country, slightly tangential even to the sound of what came to be called alt-country, or Americana. Its sensibility wasn't quite rural, but it certainly wasn't urban_though elements of soul and gospel flecked the record as well. The sound in general was what you'd call "organic" - you could hear the guitars being strummed, the drums occasionally snapped. There was a resigned naturalness of the lead singer's voice, a plaintiveness in the melodies. And yet there was something droney, almost hypnotic, about a few of the songs, both musically and lyrically, a touch reminiscent of the electronic "shoegazer" bands of the time. DJ MARCELLE/ANOTHER NICE MESS - A DIFFERENT FRIDGE FOR CHEESE
Is DJ Marcelle a masochist? She hates musicals and called her 2022 album 'DJ Marcelle: The Musical.' She dislikes cheese and calls this album 'A Different Fridge For Cheese.' Probably the answer has more to do with her wicked sense of humour and her love for original track and album titles. The singular producer and DJ from Amsterdam lives in that rare league of artists who are out there, doing their own thing, continually pushing the boundaries of electronic music and having a great time in doing so as well. This album is like any Marcelle production (and DJ-set): it's hard to pigeonhole. Dub, techno and avant-garde influences are clearly present but the overall feeling is one of freedom, excitement, adventure and playfulness. Ideas bounce off another and Marcelle is certainly not content with one single formula. Each track becomes a new beginning, a new adventure. Where can we take this? What if we try that? Bristling with possibilities, structures are pushed and pulled and explode excitedly. Album opener and closer 'Muslimgauze Was Right Part I and II' are short pieces of rhythmic noise, 'Big Room Techno Looking For A Room' is a weird and very danceable techno track and the bouncy 'Nice Feet' is not only another great dance track but also the second tribute on the LP ('Muslimgauze Was Right' the other one); this one is an ode to the best female footballer in the world, Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati. 'New Equipment' describes the mood of the track perfectly. For a The Fall fan the track title 'You Don't Have To Be Weird To Be Weird' should ring a bell. Insect sounds dominate stop-start track 'To Bee Or Not To Bee.' 'A Difficult Fridge For Cheese' (nearly the title track!) is a storming avant-garde track featuring voices of some of her (musical) friends like two members of avant dub outfit Holy Tongue and fans and friends she met whilst DJ-ing in amongst others Brazil and Portugal, asking in their native language to leave the cheese in the fridge, por favor. This brings us to the album title. The title was inspired by a visit to her DJ-friend and fellow The Fall-fanatic Carlos Souffront in San Francisco. Souffront, in daily life a cheesemonger, does have a different fridge for the cheese in his house. Upon seeing this, Marcelle decided to name her new LP after this. For future album titles controversial phenomena like 'pop choirs' and 'DJ schools' are warned! DJ MARCELLE/ANOTHER NICE MESS - DJ MARCELLE: THE MUSICAL
Tina Turner. Princess Diana. Johan Cruijff. Jesus. Abba. Spider-Man. Jerry Springer. Mormons. A brothel. Monty Python. A gay remake of Shakespeare. Anne Frank. Nothing and no-one seems to be able to escape the fangs of the musical industry. So it's no real surprise that the last woman standing, DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess, has also fallen victim to this evil fate. The album, after last year's 'Explain The Food, Bitte' her second release with Berlin label Play Loud! Productions, is as surprising and up-to-date as ever. Marcelle's productions come into existence quite quickly, like sketches capturing a moment. Take, for example, 'The Quarantine House Party Try-Out,' a bouncy track dealing with those illegal parties people organised in their own homes during the COVID period. With the pandemic now hopefully over, the DJ/producer travels the world again. Marcelle deals with this in 'Soups On Tour,' related to a link on her website where she documents all soups she eats on the road (and in restaurants). It's this individual approach to her creative process that gives her artistic fulfillment; her D.I.Y. attitude is inherent to everything she does and is reflected in her creative process as a whole, from the music itself to how it is presented: on the sleeve of 'DJ Marcelle: The Musical' we see her literally 'dropping' a musical. The freedom she grants herself is essential, she never had the difficulty of coping with certain expectations or being stuck with a certain perceived musical (ha!) profile, because she has always been able to make sure people didn't have any anticipation of where her music (and DJ-sets) would go in the first place. So it's no real surprise that, following danceable tracks like 'Voted Best DJ School (25% Off') and weird album opener/warning 'This Record Is Scratched' on side A, we get only one track on side B: the 17-minute-plus technoid stomper 'Smacznego!' (Polish for 'enjoy your meal'). It's a hypnotic, continually shifting track which, even when it ends after such a long time, leaves you hungry for more. The hilarious promo video of the song hopefully satisfies this appetite. So now we have DJ Marcelle also being exploited as a musical. There is one consolation, though: 'DJ Marcelle: The Musical' happens to be the first instrumental musical in the world!

"'Moments Remixes' began from a conversation with Jlin. We did an interview together for Talkhouse in fall of 2019, in season with the original 'Moments' release on Unseen Worlds. Her poignant and effusive dialogue sparked the inspiration for us to do a remix together. That organically evolved into a full project idea. Xiu Xiu did the second remix in January 2020, and before things continued further - the pandemic was upon us. During the course of the pandemic, it evolved more, and organically became a more focused project for the isolation and lack of in-person collaborative environments/performance halls. All of but one remix were completed by 2021, and then refined and curated further over the following (four) years. The highlighted dialogue across the album is how these sparse, melodic minimalism of piano and vibraphone could manifest in a diversity of experimental sub-genres: electronica, IDM, avant-rock, drone/ambient. The careful curation and illustrative collaborators elicit the transportive 'new moments' and permeable qualities of the core compositions, that discover uncharted life in this project." 'GOLDEN CITY GOSPEL & KASI SOUL FROM THE NEW SOUTH AFRICA' - In apartheid-era South Africa, gospel music provided solace and served as a tool for covert communication to circumvent the censorship of the settler regime. By the 2010s, South African gospel, deeply ingrained in the soul of Soweto, assumed a new role... as a heartfelt cry against persistent failures and shortcomings, a cry mourning a South Africa that never materialized. A new South Africa needed a new gospel sound.
In 2016, nine young men from different parts of Diepkloof, a celebrated neighbourhood brimming with talent within Soweto's sprawling township, came together to form the sound of a new South Africa under the name Diepkloof United Voice. Diepkloof United Voice's music has gone viral multiple times on TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook, garnering between 60,000 to 2 million views. The comments section displays flag emojis from Brazil to India, showcasing the global reach of their music. This album was recorded on site in Soweto, in an abandoned classroom of Lebowa Elementary School in Diepkloof Zone 3, where the choir rehearsed for years. Amid rolling blackouts, Diepkloof United Voice poured their heart, soul, and vocal chords into their debut record, combining classic South Africa gospel, Soweto's own kasi soul, American blues, and Zulu flavor, to present the contemporary gospel sound of a changing South Africa. The promise of a new South Africa might finally be realized, as Diepkloof United Voice guarantees the country's future is guided by the truth, uttered with each gasp of breath from their inimitable voices.

The King of Miami's Cuban music scene, the late Ray Fernandez, is featured here fronting his enormously talented family band on an album that first brought him into the spotlight. Heavily influenced by deep funk and Latin music, their psych-tinged creations also incorporated many other kaleidoscopic sound infusions, including soul, calypso, Afro-Cuban, and salsa. Fronted by Ray Fernandez, his band included his very talented wife and two sons and proved to be a highly influential group on Miami's Latin music scene in the late '70s. What also made them stand out was their versatility; this group could easily shift from Cuban funk to reggae in a blink. Their instrumentation was also different to the 'norm,' and where a lot of similar sounds were saxophone-led, this band used a bass clarinet. Instead of bongos, Ray and His Court played with the unique Osi drums from Africa. Sampled heavily by DJs worldwide (including DJ Shadow), On High presents a must-have piece of music for any serious Latin, funk, or rare groove collector. On May 28, 1969, four American musicians - reed/wind players Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman, bassist Malachi Favors, and (accompanied by his wife, singer Fontella Bass) trumpeter Lester Bowie - boarded the ocean liner S.S. United States, bound for Le Havre, France. After landing five days later, they moved on to Paris, where they got to work. On August 22, 1970, in the waning days of their stay overseas, the group, with Bass on vocals, would record their second release for EMI's Pathé Marconi: the movie soundtrack 'Les Stances à Sophie.' The record, an exciting, eminently listenable combination of soul, classical, and jazz strains that survives as the Art Ensemble Of Chicago's most stylistically diverse album, has long been admired by a devoted cult. Its durability is largely due to the popularity of its "hit": Over the years, 'Theme De Yoyo' has been covered repeatedly, essayed by acts as varied as German funk band the Boogoos (and the offshoot Deep Jazz, both featuring singer Julia Fehenbeger), British nu-jazz combo the Cinematic Orchestra, Polish jazz man Wojtek Mazolewski, Norwegian rockers Motorpsycho, French dance music artist Étienne Jaumet, and London-based remixer ÖShall I Bruk It.
More than half a century later, 'Theme De Yoyo' and 'Les Stances à Sophie' still bring it. This reissue from Play Loud! Productions is supplemented with new notes by U.S. music journalist Chris Morris.

Certainly one of the most obscure and perhaps one of the most fascinating works of the English jazz revolution. Master of ceremonies is cellist Paul Buckmaster, known for his work with the Third Ear Band and for his (later) collaborations with Miles Davis, David Bowie and Elton John. 'Chitinous' is his the only album as leader and it was recorded between 31 March and 13 April 1970, by an orchestra of no less than 51 players, with violins, violas and cellos. In this enormous line-up we find the cream of English musicians involved, starting with trumpeter Ian Carr and ending with drummer John Marshall. The leader is on cello, his main instrument, but also on keyboards, which he shares with the excellent Pete Robinson. The music is organized in suites, with very broad suggestions that draw from classical and contemporary music and then move back into jazz territory.
