The combination of Howard Werths vocals and Keith Gemmells versatile use of sax, flute and clarinet is just immediately highly fascinating. All the tracks on this album are just equally great - although its true that the instrumental "Ebony Variations" with its playful jazzy renditions of a classical theme and Gemmels really virtuoso clarinet play doesnt fit quite well to the rest - Nonetheless this piece is an excellent one as well as a very rare one.	60s/70sPSYCH/PROG/FOLK 15/04/2008	15.95 EUR
0306047 LP TIME 700 TIMELESS	BONZO DOG DOO-DAH BAND - GORILLA The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (also known as The Bonzo Dog Band, The Bonzo Dog Dada Band and, colloquially, as "The Bonzos") are a band created by a group of British art-school denizens of the 1960s. Moving over to Liberty Records, the Bonzos released their first album, Gorilla, that included "Jazz, Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold" which savagely parodied their early "trad" jazz roots and featured some of the most deliberately inept jazz playing ever recorded. The record company only allowed two hours of studio time per track, so it was completed in a single take to allow for the far more complex "The Intro and the Outro" in which every member of the band was introduced and played a solo, starting with genuine band members. 0309186 LP TIME 708 TIMELESS	BROWN, PETE -& PIBLOKTO!- - THOUSANDS ON A RAFT REPRESSED! After the relatively lightweight 'Things May Come...' Pete Brown and Piblokto! produced this much heavier rocker in 1971. 'Aeroplane Head Woman', with its heavy guitar riff, could have come from Deep Purple and the title song, 'Thousands On A Raft', with mock-serious lyrics and a very catchy chorus wouldn't have been out of place on Jack Bruce's Songs For A Tailor. The musicianship is excellent, particularly from the fine young guitarist Jim Mullen and respected percussionist Rob Tait. Brown's songwriting is, as always, lyrically amusing, clever, and just plain weird. There were splashes of Santana, brushes of Iron Butterfly, dabblings of Yes, Black Sabbath, Hendrix, and countless others, but never to the point of derivity. Fans of just about any genre or sub-genre of classic rock music will find much to savor on this disc. The opening titular track is a hippie paradise of chugging, textured acoustic rhythm guitar twined with spacey fuzz solos and tight vocal harmonies. This follow-up album is a little more electric than their 1st, but almost equally eccentric in the best possible way. The sound is rather different but is also tighter (different rhythm section), but the three frontmen Arbus, Caines and Nicholson are still there. "Snafu" is almost a jazz album, deeply rooted in the avant-garde - with its Charles Mingus cover version, some tracks that play backwards etc. Its what the British press wouldve once called "jazz-tinged". 0332741 LP JPR 7105 JACKPOT	MIJ - YODELING ASTROLOGER "Yodeling Astrologer" (aka: Color By The Number) could be considered an anomaly, a one-off or a miracle of circumstance in the history of psychedelic pop music. Mij, a.k.a. Jim Holmberg was discovered by ESP owners while playing in Washington Square Park in the summer of 1968. His style and persona mesmerized the label heads, and he explained to them a recent auto accident had fractured his skull but left him changed. He perceived sound, color and vision differently and he had funneled this new world of perception directly into his music. All this was enough to warrant getting Mij into the studio to lay down a record of his rambly, cosmic folk songs. The entire album was recorded in three hours, first-takes and impromptu production intact, then pressed up and introduced to the world shortly thereafter. To focus on the yodeling aspect of the Yodeling Astrologer would miss some of the depth of this album. Not just a hippie novelty act of the time, this is a truly thoughtful and somewhat frenzied document. Like Buffy St. Marie's "Meditations", Linda Perhacs' "Parallelograms" or "Cold Fact" by Rodriguez, this is an album of sincere folk songs colored with subtle psychedelic touches. Uneasy reverberations and soft echoes glide over Holmbergs breezy songs, creating a consistent sonic environment as spontaneous as it is intriguing. The band was based in the Richmond area of London, which at the time was kind of a hotbed for blues (the Crawdaddy Club), especially acoustic style blues. Shortly thereafter, however, Denis became disenchanted with the music business. Thankfully he left us these recordings as an artefact. They shortened their name to Panama Ltd. for a second album by which time Liz Hann, their vocalist, had left and been replaced by Anne Matthews. This sequel, Old Boot Wine was slightly less innovative and disruptive although the textures got thicker (cello, flute) and jazzier. They hardly played that much and went unknown to virtually many Doom Metal collectors because were never able to get this because it was only available as a 6 track demo known as "The Beginning", and it probably didnt get too far outside the Maryland area (I assume). This is a unique band to say the least, but also a very magical sounding band where there are some moments in the music where your jaw will just drop to the sheer innovativeness of the way they put these riffs and songs together. Tom (the guitar player) plays some of the sickest riffs Ive ever heard. Some of the stuff this guy comes up with is out of this world. Some of the songs they put together have like 5-7 amazing riffs in one song whereas a lot of bands rely on 1 or 2 good riffs to carry out a song (which isnt a bad thing either). I hear a ton of ANGEL WITCH, CELTIC FROST, DREAM DEATH, TROUBLE in their darker / doom-y sounds and in their faster thrash-y parts, theres a heavy VENOM, MOTORHEAD vibe. In short theyre best described as a Doom Metal, Thrash Metal band with amazing break downs. This release combines their efforts from their 1982 Demo, 1984 7" Single, and 1986 Demo. For the first time ever all of these songs will be officially released still in their original quality. Its a shame this band was never picked up by a label back then because if there ever was a truly underground N.W.O.B.H.M. band that was looked over, it was Dragonslayer! Bands like BLACK HOLE, DARK QUARTERER, DEATH SS, PAUL CHAIN, BULLDOZER, RUN AFTER TO, NECRODEATH, BERSERKS are some of the better bands from that era. Id like to think that OLD YRON towards the end of the 80s was an unknown forgotten gem for the time of its release, especially since the tides were changing and this kind of IRON MAIDEN-esque heavy metal was beginning to die out in popularity while new genres started to emerge. I think this release was really unknown to a lot of people considering it was a DIY pressing. Here you will find extremely fast heavy metal, but not Thrash. OLD YRON had a very violent lead guitar layered with shredding riffs and over the top high pitched vocals. Think IRON MAIDEN meets YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, but without going overboard with the guitar shredding. The band has absolutely no demos, rehearsals, or any other music except for this album as far as we know. There were no master tapes so the best option the band wanted to do was to rip the music directly from the original vinyl. The only bonus tracks we could come up with was some dark classical music written by Antonio Ferrari in the early 2000s. Antonio talks about putting OLD YRON back together, but no one really knows if its going to happen or even what it will sound like. They hooked up with Steve Angel (singer/bass) and drummer Ronnie Sharpe and formed REACTOR. They played some live gigs in the mid 80's, one that is featured in this release. Shortly after the gig, Richard moved down to Florida and was replaced by Mike Reid, and at that time renamed the band THE REAL WORLD. They ended up only recording a 6 song studio EP which is the first 6 songs off of this release, that was never released until now. As far as their sound is concerned, it just came out natural for them, nothing forced, just basically some guys jamming good old SABBATH/PENTAGRAM influenced dirty Rock N Roll with a "social relevant" lyrical message to the fans. The music is raw, heavy, and catchy. After many line-up changes (even Joe Hasselvander (he played guitar) was in the band at one point), they decided to call it quits as it was more or less something for these guys to hang around and do with no pressure and to let off some steam rather than a band looking to go somewhere. Kent presents a second volume from Gerry Purcell's New York-based GWP label. Purcell made his money through managing major US middle-of-the-road artists like Eddy Arnold and Al Hirt. His entry into the R&B field was largely unsuccessful in terms of hits but he assembled some of the cream of New York talent to create very high quality soul music. All of the GWP soul releases were of merit, but some of the tapes found in the vaults were exemplary. Unissued dance tracks by Lillie Fields, Larry Banks & Jaibi, Bobby Penn and the Devonnes are already big 100 Club records from advance acetate plays. The Hesitations' Go away' has had advance play on the modern soul scene from its limited appearance on a 100 Club anniversary single two years ago. Alice Clark's Northern classic 'You Hit Me' was a GWP production and we feature her version of the Plus Four's 'Happiest Girl In The World'. Benny Gordon contributes three southern soul sides, including a killer version of Maxine Brown's 'All In My Mind', while Little Rose Little gives a powerhouse interpretation of the old standard 'Tennessee Waltz'. It requires a state of emersion and a freedom to reach toward technical trust and semiconscious execution of the revealed composition. Upon returning to a conscious state one hears what was created as though it is being presented. The thought then thinks about what was thought and executed as a comprovisation of point instant mixed and remixed sound devices: Breath, Posture, Devotion, Bass Clarinet, Soprano G and Bb Clarinets and Saxophone, Kalimba, Native American Flutes, Electronic Accoutrements, Voice, Percussion, Mac Book, Family, Pen, Pencil and the One. Born on the banks of the Magdalena River in coastal Colombia, this infectious music represents a marriage of African, Spanish, and Indigenous influences. Antonio Fuentes began recording Colombia's music in 1934, founding his country's first record label, Discos Fuentes.
