0340407 LP KLP 60 K-RAA-K	HELLVETE - DE GEK Hellvete is one of the three members who founded the Flemish Funeral Folk collective and a key figure of the satanadelic combo Sylvester Anfang II. Similar to the mothership, his solo work spans from folk-inspired guitar drones to minimalist keyboard esoterica. The significant difference is that his solo songs are more composed and less improvised. "De Gek" (meaning "The Fool") is an epic trip through the different zones of the Hellvete Empire: layered guitar eruptions mix in with modern classical orchestration and dark folk tales. Influences such as Stephen R. Smith and Manuel Göttsching result in abstract sound narrations, that might just as well make one think of medieval folk or Rock In Opposition. On this debut LP all the aspects of what has been baptized the "Belgian dronevolkscene" culminate in an extraordinary exploration of the Self: a sonic exorcization of old demons and a return to the nostalgic peace of the country side. An interesting album with a really druggie sound, full of feedback and fuzzy guitars. The vocals, when present, are not easily heard. The cover of Eight Miles High is very good, probably one of the best cover versions I have ever heard. The original songs all follow a similar pattern as the covers, with hazy guitar riffs and loud rhythms. The last track is particularly noisy and unstructured. This record is great-bizarre, atmospheric, amateurish (in the best of all possible ways). Hidden in amongst the echoing canyons of sound theres some really snotty punk attitude wrapped up in trippy velvet fuzz. This new incarnation being SYLVESTER ANFANG II (as opposed to Silvester Anfang) reached a new level of sheer awesomeness last year with the incredible double LP on Aurora Borealis, on Commune Cassetten they continue their bizarre trip into the darker - but somehow super psychedelic - realm of the occult obsessed mind. There's a real fucked up krautrock boogie vibe throughout but retaining some of the doomed funeral folk qualities of the original Anfang guise, as well as some loose as hell, total stoned out ritualistic baked grooves. The LP comes housed in a techni-colour collaged artwork with a black and white image of a lady, which we can presume is a witch, with a dagger and chalice... a sleeve that really sums up the music enclosed. 0340504 3xCD AMSCD 154 AMS	ANALOGY - COMPLETE WORKS (3CD BOX) This exclusive deluxe - limited to 500 copies - boxset features ALL songs recorded by Analogy-Earthbound over the last 40 years, including lots of material never issued on cd, and even some completely unreleased tracks. 38 tracks! The box includes a huge book with many unreleased picture and an extensive band history in English, German and Italian. All vintage songs have been carefully remasterd. Analogy is a very rare and expensive album, pressed in around 1000 copies. It had a delicate single cover made of thin cardboard, and some copies were wrapped in a giant poster with a foot (pictured also on the back cover, this was in fact an ashtray!), folded in six parts, to hide the naked bodies. The original picture used for the LP had the six members of Yoice, but at the time of its release Mauro Rattaggi has left the group, so he was hidden under a blue stripe printed on the cover. The Akarma reissue has a retouched picture of the five Analogy members without the blue stripe which has been added to the record like the Japanese albums' obi's. The album was reissued for the first time in Germany by Ohrwaschl, with a cover identical to the original and a different poster (with the five musicians naked), and later by Akarma, with a reworked gatefold cover. The CD reissue by Garden of Delights issued in 2001 contains an unreleased extra track, Milan on a sunday morning. The CD The suite was issued in Germany in 1993 by Ohrwaschl, and later in 10-inch form by Akarma in 2000 with a different cover design. Even the single by Yoice is rare. The track Sold out also appears on a promo single backed with a song by Terza Classe. The song God's own land also appears on a promotional single, but under the name Eternity, on the other side the German group Ihre Kinder. Eternity was the name of the old band of Wolfgang Schoene, and was chosen by the record company for this promo single. The Earthbound single is rather rare, having been issued in 2000 copies each for both the 7-inch and 12-inch versions, the latter has an extra track. The 12" version has a laminated cover and an insert. This summer Autumn Ferment started a collection of seasonally inspired 7"'s called the Seasonal Sevens. They thought it would be a rather nice idea to release a 7" vinyl for every season, starting with summer and running through to spring next year. Each 7" will be a split release, highlighting two artists that they feel are quite special. Each 7" will come on lovely coloured vinyl representing the season in question. Each 7" will be strictly kept to a very limited pressing of 300 copies only and will be all hand numbered. Side A is home to 'Winter's Day', a track taken from the album 'Tales of Misfortune and Woe' (released on Basta Records in 2009) by American and now Netherlands resident, Jonathan Brown, aka Dusty Stray. On 'Winter's Day' we hear the story, sung in Jonathan's rich vocals with accompaniment from Marjolein van der Klauw, of a man becoming lost in the frozen wilderness, succumbing to the cold, dying and being 'given up to eat' to the local wildlife. What is winter but a time of giving up and sharing?! A seemingly sad and disturbing tale, yet with the additional acoustic guitar, banjo and percussion, the track is nowhere near a depressing dirge but a toe-tapping (slightly sinister) and lightly comedic ode to the harshness of winter. The double A side is a track played by the spider like fingers of Brighton's surreal troubadour Flake Brown (Tony Ramsay). 'Cool is the Snow' is taken from Flake's unique and fascinating debut album 'Help the Overdog' which we had the delight in releasing in the summer 2008. 'Cool is the Snow' is a flurry, nay a snow storm, of whirling finger picked guitar and lyrical/vocal wizardry; Flake's distinctive style being compared between the likes of Jake Thackray, Robin Williamson and Ivor Cutler. RSC and I decided to do a small release to coincide with the original, as a limited run CD-R featuring re-workings and remixes of the pieces by friends, namely The Remote Viewer, Geskia!, Ten and Tracer and Pan Am Scan. Over time it became apparent that this project needed to spread its wings, and with lots of support from Yasuhiko Fukuzono (Aus), and other close friends, I decided to ask more friends to join in with the project. In 1982 my father set up The Archway Foundation, a charity that focused on helping those in various walks of life who are deeply affected by loneliness. They hold weekly social events, organise dinners, visits, drivers to take people to places and all sorts of support work. In these difficult economical times, charities, which rely on the donations of others, are suffering terribly. But these people still need all the support they can get, so I guess I just figure that, even if it's a small level of support we can provide, at least we can try. It has odd rhythms coming in and out, piano, weird glitchy sounds and tones I can't quite place. Its all in the craftsmanship you see. It's very rare to come across an artist who actually makes 'songs' which can also be defined as 'pieces' - and as such his work is so hard to place. Opal Island is a very 'heartful' album, as Antony is himself a very 'heartful' artist and songsmith. The early pieces from Hiding Nature were with me at the end of 2008 and were one of the main reasons for starting the label. He spent the past year finalising it and, I have to say, I think this is his chef-d'oeuvre. The album is obviously an offthesky record, with its minute attention to detail and its beautiful, often creeping, sometimes sporadic, bursts of melody. Essentially Jason's plan was to make an album of heavily processed vibraphone pieces, yet it became so much more featuring clever use of warbly guitar tones and textures throughout, and incredible haunting vocal arrangements on 'Frozen Fountain', for example. It ranges from the melodic brilliance of 'Hand Held Lightly' to the more experimental playfulness of 'Clockwort', from the guitar chords mixed with bleeps of melody on 'Little Subtle Secret' to the delicately processed vibraphone of 'Rest But Not Least'. Its a complete listening experience by one of the most talented producers around today, an astonishing record and the most fun I have heard in melodious experimentation in some time, maybe ever. The atypical and extraordinary Max Brand Synthesizer, also referred to as Moogtonium (which is basically a reconstructed and enhanced Trautonium) was one of the first instruments built by Bob Moog, and was begun in a time when Moog's worldwide success was yet to come. This cd aims to capture the machine's original sonorous SPIRIT - every single track on this CD was produced without the aid of any modern sound-altering production tools, and in the arrangement process only techniques that were available in the 60s were used. Thus the sounds you are hearing on this album represent the true sound of this powerful synthesizer. Additionally the CD features 2 late and previously unreleased pieces by Max Brand himself. Both pieces were produced entirely on the current Moog synthesizer setup. Triptych (7:55) was composed by Brand at the remarkable age of 74 in 1970, while Ilian 4 (28:20), a ballet composed in 1974 and inspired by Robert Grave's book The Greek Myths is the last preserved piece Brand completed in his life. Inch-time is Stefan Panczak, a London-based Australian with a penchant for multi-textured electronica. After a string of releases including two full-length albums, and curating the Teaism compilation also on Static Caravan, as well as sound tracking the latest National Express advertisement comes this twelve-inch with five new tracks and a spoonful of jazz-tinged melodic nous. The creeping, nocturnal title track bubbles with a dark intensity, its brooding sensibility at odds with the clicks and whirrs which skitter throughout on this stately slice of icy electronica. An echo-laden dub version is even more eerily atmospheric and reminiscent of Robin Saville, if he was organising his garden tools in the shed on the night of a full moon. The sprightly Crystal Visions provides contrast, being feather-light and wafted along by crinkled beats, though theres still an insidious feel lurking in the background, before briefly floating into the realms of exotica in a way that would surely have pleased Martin Denny. Meanwhile, A Handful of Dust takes swirling, repeated melody patterns to craft a quietly precise composition, sculpting sounds to form a beautifully layered concoction of rhythms, twanging guitar and a host of otherworldly sounds. Suspended twinkles with barely-concealed malice, its minute-long running time feeling like an extended intro to one of Tortoise's more lugubrious excursions. Pattering rhythms duel with ghostly bass, all anchored by a chiming melody which coils tightly before fading out to reach a hushed climax. 12" vinyl pressing ltd to 500 copies, once again housed in a Roy Ananda designed sleeve. In both places the local population was trying to gain independence from British colonialism. Although colonialism is never a good thing, there are always some positive outcomes when two cultures collide, especially when it comes to music. The Zulu of South Africa are the largest ethnic group in the country and are well known for their rich musical traditions. In the 1940s, however, Zulu musicians began fusing traditional Zulu choral music (often sung by migrant mine workers), like Mbube and Isicathamiya, with the instruments and rhythms of Western jazz. A continent away in India, we see that the same kind of musical revolution was taking place during this same period. Calcutta in particular became a musical hotbed beginning in WWII, when it became one of the major ports for the South East Asian Theatre of the War. The jazz scene was mainly centred on the house bands from the various luxury hotels and British social clubs, with these bands often recording for the South East Asian division of E.M.I. Interestingly, one of the hottest stars on this scene during the 1940s was Teddy Weatherford, an African American expat from the Chicago jazz scene. Beginning in 1942, following the Japanese invasion of Burma (Myanmar), hundreds of thousands of refugees poured into India, among these great jazz musicians like Reuben Solomon (of Iraqi Jewish descent) of The Rangoon Gymkhana Club fame. Batuk Nandy, on the other hand, was a well-known steel guitar player who rose to fame by making "filmi" music for Bollywood films, while Bismillah Khan was an Indian shehnai (a traditional flute-like instrument) master, and one of only three classical musicians to have ever won the Bharat Ratna prize, the highest civilian prize in India. Khan was also one of the few musicians to perform at Delhi's Red Fort in 1947 for India's Independence celebrations. Despite the obvious negative outcomes, different cultures and religions forced together in the face of economic and political adversity has historically been a recipe for great music, and as this album testifies, India and South Africa were no different.
