Formed in Milwaukee, THE ORBITS were a mod/powerpop three-piece band whose outstanding "Make The Rules" can be heard on the second volume of Powerpearls. Old bandmate (and also SHIVVERS drummer) JIM RICHARDSON once qualified the combo as "Brian Jones on speed fronting The Jam." In fact, the trio was typical of the US vintage late '70s power-pop sound, as they were true garage activists drawing from the '60s legacy much more subtly than their UK contemporaries. Juvenile, disarming, devoid of all pretense or anything. Released on the tiny label No.1, "Make The Rules" backed with smashing "Phenomenal World" were in the bins in 1980. The Orbits sound was tight like a strong black coffee (or its chemical equivalent) but enriched with a lot of pop artifacts (clear vocals, handclaps, peals of guitar riffs, "lalala-la" background vocals). I'm Lost Without Your Rhythm is based on the recording of a live performance of dance 'learned' or performed by amateur Romanian dancers in Iasi, Romania, during the Periferic 8 Biennial of Contemporary Art in Oct 2008. The film links several days' activity into a continuous process, in which dancers were watched by an audience who were free to come and go as they pleased. There is no final performance as such and so the work is a result of collaboration between choreographer, musicians, dancers and audience. "The original music was recorded at the Qbico U-Nite XIII which took place at Issue Project Room in NYC back in February 2009. For sure the opening set by Atiba & Dave Nuss was one of the most original live sets I had the pleasure to see. I remember talking with Dave, trying to set up this gig. DRY ROT from Ventura, CA are no strangers to confusing their audience. Their debut release, an under the radar self released 7" EP, hailed comparisons to the like of UNITED MUTATION. They followed that up with a concept release on Painkiller, focusing on the real life case of a man who would capture and enslave women. Next stop on the DRY ROT train ride was a two sided 7" on Deer Healer, that sounded more like a lounge soundtrack for Blue Velvet. Now comes the real gem, the last stop, all aboard call titled Philistine. While the aforementioned comparison of UNITED MUTATION, as well as VOID and DIE KREUZEN still hold true, there are hints of BUTTHOLE SURFERS as well. ..Different Cats". The legendary American artist Terry Fox is known for his pioneering work in performance, sculpture, drawing and installation. Throughout his career, Fox (who died in Cologne in 2008), focused on sound as a fundamental artistic material. Many of his most important sound works were realized long before terms such as "sound art" or "audio art" became widely known. This recording, "The Labyrinth Scored for 11 Cats" (1977), is now recognized as an early classic of the audio art genre. It is one of Fox's many works to be inspired by the structure of the labyrinth found on the floor of the famous medieval cathedral of Chartres. For this work, Fox translated the 552 Steps, 11 concentric rings and 34 turns of the floor mosaic into a mesmerizing composition of recorded cat purrs, a sonic phenomenon which is still not fully understood. The "purrs" resonate in a shimmering wall of sound like in an uncanny feline orchestra. This LP recording, the first in a series of major Terry Fox audio works to be released in the future by Choose, is based on a digital version that Fox produced in 2003 in the sound studio of the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. Limited vinyl reissue. Formed at the end of the 60's, Gomorrha rised from the German progressive rock scene thanks to the help of the producer and sound engineer Conny Plank. The band original line up includes Helmut Pohl (drums) and Eberhard Krietsch (ogan, bass) with Ad Oschel and Ali Claudi at the guitars. They released their first album in 1970. The second recording "trauma" (1971) really marks a new step in the development of Gomorrha's original song. They distinguish with a dense heavy psych rock experience punctuated by organ dominated sequences. It now includes lyrics in English and a lead singer in the name of Peter Otten. In 1972 they release what will be considered as their summit "I Turned To See Whose Voice It Was"; An adventurous album featuring catchy instrumental jams, krautrock's original psych / spacey mood, pastoral flute parts and heavy guitar riffs. The concept of this release is focused on the apocalypse theme and the book of revelation. After years spent traveling and playing music across the South, towards the end of WWII, Hooker, like so many other Delta-born bluesmen, ended up in Detroit. After a few years spent rising up through the ranks of the legendary Hastings Street scene and purchasing his first electric guitar, in 1948 the 31-year-old blues guitarist finally got his first big break. With the help of agent Bernie Besman, and L.A.'s Modern Records, Hooker's first single "Boogie Chillen", unexpectedly went to the top of the R&B charts. The next few years, documented in this album, were a whirlwind of hits for Hooker, who often hopped from label to label whenever the opportunity arose, changing his name to escape contracts, before finally ending up at Vee-Jay in 1955. And the hits piled up. Throughout the fifties, Hooker spread his own brand of raw, foot-stomping Delta blues across America, and the world, becoming one of the most idolized and imitated musicians in the history of blues, and paving the way for the blues-based rock & roll explosion of the 1960s. Based in Rome, L'Uovo di Colombo was a sort of primordial supergroup featuring Enzo Volpini and Ruggero Stefani that had previously played together in I Fholks with future members of Reale Accademia di Musica, while Elio Volpini had been a member of Flea (on the Honey). L'Uovo di Colombo is a great album, with the very good voice of Toni Gionta (his real surname was Tartarini and he was later the singer with Cherry Five) backed by a keyboard/bass/drums trio in perfect Le Orme style with occasional use of acoustic and electric guitar. The solid rhythm section and competent keyboard playing give the album a very high quality and the eight tracks are all perfectly enjoyable. After the band's demise, drummer Ruggero Stefani joined Samadhi, then Mediterraneo and Gli Alunni del Sole. Elio Volpini went back to his old cohorts of Flea to form the jazz-rock outfit Etna. As said before, singer Gionta changed his name to Tony Tartarini and was briefly involved in Cherry Five. The album is totally played and sung by Leo himself, and despite some commercial pop songs, it has some good moments reminding of his old band's sound, like in La discesa nel cervello, Il castello and the intense closing track Una gabbia per me. Obviously the sound is mainly keyboard based, but Leone played drums, minimoog bass lines and even guitar on some tracks. An album track, Sono stanco anch'io appeared on the B-side of a single from 1978, Fremo. A key figure in the rise of early rock & roll and R&B, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Johnny Otis, was not only a drummer, but also a bandleader, historic nightclub owner, talent scout and songwriter, whose career stretched over half a century: no wonder he is called "the godfather of R&B"! These 27 vintage tracks are taken from his earliest recordings for the Excelsior and Savoy labels, just as he was beginning to rise to stardom. These early Excelsior tracks (1945-1947) feature jazz-lover Otis, playing firmly in the big-band style of the day, and although Otis was not well-know at the time, his version of "Harlem Nocturne" became a minor hit. In 1948 Otis made history by founding the first strictly R&B club, the Barrelhouse, located in the predominately black neighborhood of Watts (Los Angeles), which soon became the premiere stage for new talent. By 1949 Otis had signed a contract with Savoy, and began recording in the R&B style. Tracks like: "Double Crossing Blues," "Mistrustin' Blues," and "Cupid's Boogie" went straight to number one, and in 1950 alone Otis had ten singles in the R&B Top Ten! The LP contains two long suites divided into small movements with very long and complex titles. Although from a historical standpoint Les Paul is perhaps best remembered for his invention of the solid-bodied electric guitar and his groundbreaking efforts in multi-tracking, this should not overshadow his considerable talent as a performer and virtuoso master of the guitar. Originally highly influenced by Django Reinhardt, by the time these recordings were made, Les Paul had developed a unique style that has gone on to influence countless others. The '40s marked Les' first taste of true stardom, whereupon moving to Hollywood, his newly formed Les Paul Trio began recording profusely and accompanying the most popular vocalists of the day. In fact, this album features Bing Crosby (who requires no introduction) on seven tracks! Les Paul also backed many other popular vocalists of the period, such as Helen Forrest, a popular singer of the big-band era, who sings on several Hawaiian-inspired tracks (which were much in vogue at the time, thanks to the popular films like 1937's "Waikiki Wedding", starring Bing Crosby and 1942's "Song of the Islands" starring Betty Grable); the Delta Rhythm Boys (a popular proto-doo wop group of the '30s and '40s), found on two tracks; and Dick Haymes (a popular crooner who rivaled Crosby and Sinatra), also found on two tracks. Therefore, this album is not only a look into the amazing guitar playing of one of the greatest guitar players of the 20th century, but also a glimpse into the most popular music of the period. Called "The maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, the Canadian-born Oscar Peterson was one of the shining stars of the jazz piano, and one of its most widely recorded, becoming a household name by the mid fifties. It can be said that Peterson was inspired by the Art Tatum school, but it can also be said that he used this as a jumping off point for his own truly unique style, characterized by incredible virtuosity on his instrument and tidal waves of notes. These rare recordings are taken from two sessions recorded by Peterson at the beginning of his career. The bulk of the music comes from an August 1950 session featuring fellow pianist Ray Brown, while the second session comes from a 1952 session featuring Peterson playing in a quartet format, featuring Ray Brown on bass, Barney Kessel on guitar, and Alvin Stoller on drums. Of the twelve tracks found here, half are, perhaps surprisingly for such a young pianist, dedicated to originals ("Salute to Garner", "What Is It", "Minor Blues" and "Slow Down"), while the other half are dedicated to jazz standards like "Caravan", "I Get A Kick Out Of You", "How High The Moon", "What's New", etc. Tracks: Side A: 1. During this time the band released a series of discs on the Belgian-based Cramboy, proving themselves equally able to blaze trails in Europe as well. >From this period come some of their most successful albums to date, including 1985's "Holy Wars" from which we have "In A Manner of Speaking" and 1986's "Ship Of Fools" from which we hear "Reedin' Rightin' Rhythmatic" . Right around the time of this album's release, Tuxedomoon went on a 15-year recording hiatus, reuniting again to release 2004's brilliant "Cabin In The Sky" and eventually coming full circle by traveling together to record in their hometown of San Francisco. Over the past couple decades, slowly but surely more and more rare funk gems have been unearthed from all corners of globe; Africa, China, Latin America, and now Russia. This collection of Soviet Funk was all recorded by Pavel Sysoyev in Abakan, the capital city of Khakassia between 1971 and 1976. Sysoyev was an employee of the USSR State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcast, and ran a recording studio intended to create content solely for the government-controlled media. However, Sysoyev frequently brought in his friends and run late night recording sessions when no one else was around. In spite of the loosened restrictions on art and music during the 70s, most Soviet citizens had very limited access to essential American funk records. Sysoyev acquired a small collection of US r&b and jazz albums in 68, but that was about it for him and his friends. Yet somehow, this small group of classically trained musicians was able to forge a funky sound of their own. Rooted much deeper in the jazz quartet tradition than the r&b styling of James Brown and The Meters, they tapped into a way of playing jazz with a relentless groove that is enduringly refered to as The Funk. Secret Stash Records was contacted by Sysoyev himself in mid 2009. In a matter of weeks a deal was reached granting the label rights to release these funky rarities. Hundreds of hours have been spent digging through stacks of dusty old master tapes to find the best of the best. Soviet Funk Volume I is just a small sampling of his vast catalogue, and only a glimpse of things to come in future volumes. Listen closely and from time to time you will find elements of Russian classical music in the precision execution of oddly metered unison parts, complex poly-rhythms, and the use of time signatures other than the 4/4 so commonly found in most American funk. 10 track vinyl-only set, pressed on red wax, including free download card to access digital versions. "Discovered" by Alan Lomax and his legendary tape recorder while still living in on a Mississippi plantation, Muddy Waters did not become a star until he moved north to Chicago in the early forties, where his flamboyant style and slide-guitar playing would eventually become synonymous with the Chicago blues scene. Waters' first nationwide R&B hit did not come until 1948 with, "I Feel Like Going Home," but from there on out he charted regularly with songs like "Honey Bee", "Louisiana Blues", "She Moves Me", and later "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Just Make Love to Me". His band soon became the most respected (and feared) in the city -especially by local musicians who would inevitably get blown off the stage by Waters and his musical henchmen, who included the legendary harmonica player Little Walter and Willie "Hoochie Coochie Man" Dixon (both stars in their own right). At one point in the mid-1970s, Horslips bidded to be Ireland's answer to Steeleye Span. They also had crossover fans with Jethro Tull, Genesis, and even Yes in their folkier moments. Horslips released many superb albums along the way, becoming Ireland's most acclaimed folk-rock and progressive band. Founded in Dublin during 1970 as a quintet playing a brand of folk-based rock music whose only parallel could be found in the early work of Fairport Convention. Horslips drew on their distinctly Irish roots, and were capable of playing straight folk material when the moment called for it, but weren't afraid to turn up loud and hard, in the best art-rock style, on the right songs. Back in 1999, on the forefront of the Japanese electronic/acoustic microsound scene, was the then two-piece live improvisation band Minamo (two more members were added in 2001 to make the current four-piece lineup). Their live concerts helped pioneer this hybrid of delicate and natural instrumentation with microscopic electronics and subtle digital processing bringing an organic richness to a genre that threatened to remain coldly digital. Fans of Minamo not lucky enough to see them create their music live have enjoyed their studio albums and collaborative releases which captured these performances and processed them into hypnotic drones and electro-acoustic soundscapes. Dure, their last studio work since 2007's collaboration with Tape, and their follow-up to Shining on 12k, takes influence from the French philosopher Henri-Louis Bergson's concept of "pure dure" an idea that one's consciousness is a constant flow and not something that can be divided, reversed or measured. Minamo used these ideas in creating their music, despite the contradiction of the time-stamped CD format, to try to subvert the ideas of compartmentalized "time" and "space". With a strong sense of non-linearity and flow taken from Bergson's ideas, Minamo have created a colorful, skittering wash of music, noise, and texture that embraces a sense of out-there-ness. For his new ambitious project "Mahlzeit" (German for "meal") Ralf Wehowsky teamed up with Hamburgs Transindustrial Toy Orchestra (TITO), a loose collective of people working in music and other art forms. Current members Peter Kastner, Ine Ophof and Jan Van Wissen created their part of the conceptual work with their vast collection of toys and kitchen tools, using electronic devices to transform them into bizarre acoustic situations while Wehowsky contributes another strange mix of electronics, instruments, voice and body functions. All in all "Mahlzeit" is a collaborative release, but in a special way as some tracks were created by Ralf Wehowsky using sounds by Tito and vice versa, but some were just done by one part of the project, assimilalting suggestions from the other part. It mixes electroacoustic composition, early electronic music and bizarre Kraut-era avantgarde. The heterogeneous but totally coherent and self-contained "Mahlzeit" is not just a great experience and expansion of the musical activity of all involved, but also an album of fine music that is not easy to label. It's basically the old style jazz with humour interlaced throughout. Electric Shocks, and Rebel Trouser (an ep) were released by United Artists, and now on DJC together. There's one or two 'guest' musicians that should be familiar to one or two of you: Chris Welch, BJ Cole, Dave Clague, and a certain T. Newmann, not sure if this is Tom Newmann, he of later Tubular Bells fame. The majority of the music is like early Bonzo, Jollity Farm type jazz/humour, and the puns and stabs abound on tracks like Mattress Man, Patrick Moore, two likeable covers of All By Yourself In The Moonlight and Living Doll. Commonly, ignorantly but understandably lumped in with its wealthy not-too-distant cousin, Bollywood, Lollywood was inspired by, but often overshadowed by its posh and well-traveled relative. Following the simplistic Bombay + Hollywood = Bollywood name game (that would in later years spawn Nollywood in Nigeria), Lollywood's Lahore based film industry was a profitable and vibrant one that found great success in the modest boundaries of its own country but was seldom savoured outside Pakistan. However, the hugely important musical business spawned a bi-product that was viewed as a potential earner for international entertainment industry, EMI, which allowed talented musicians to create ambitious music with world class mediums at there disposal, which throughout the 60s and 70s ranged from fuzz-guitars, space-echo machines and American and European synthesizers, but, due to the composers indigenous roots, rarely a drum-kit. Here you'll find fuzzy, scuzzy, twang-happy, spaced-out and funked up urdu-grooves complete with harmonium melodies and driven by some of the most random factor, freakish, finger-numbing, percussion that the South East Asian mainstream has ever had to offer. Above all, Lollywood soundtracks sound RAW! Re-imagine some of the most action packed Bollywood productions (which Lollywooders actively did) then fire the make-up department, take away the special effects budget and then improvise. The lack of gloss on a dusty Pakistani mini-LP makes for truly experimental Eastern Pop music. So, it's time to meet the culprits. The names on the back of the records that'll keep you gambling on Ghazals and taking punts on Pakistani pulp-balladry. As an introduction, in place of R.D. Burman and Asha Bhosle, we have Mr. M. Ashraf and his long-term female collaborator, Nahid Akhtar. This duo would provide Pakistan with it's Gainsbourg / Birkin or it's Morricone / Dell'Orso for over 20 years, recording squillions of cut-and-paste sonic collages and moog-fuelled desperate love / hate / chase / chill / kill / songs mixing onomatopoeic Urdu lyrics with unexpected bursts of user friendly English language (which often elongates the running time passed the 5 minute mark) and throwing in the odd motif from a Barry White or Donna Summer hit. We also have legends like Noor Jehan, a national treasure and household name in Pakistan whose discography of film songs have deprived the vaults of EMI Pakistan of floor space for half a century. "Persian Pop, Funk, Folk And Psych From The 60s And 70s". The music and voices that blossomed during the 60s and 70s in Iran exemplify the turbulence and excitement of the age. It is worth recognizing these 'left out' and 'lost' artists individually and as a group in the global happenings of 60s/70s psych, rock and folk, while exploring their influence and relevance to the present day. Is it possible that there is a genus of delectable sounds and fetching images that almost exclusively reside in the elbowroom of memory and nostalgic 'yesteryear' storytelling? Little consideration has been given to the correlation of these sounds and stories within the universal psychedelic phenomena: parallel to the shared stylistics of British and American players, and the radical politicking of their Turkish and Korean counterparts. This collection endeavors to re-contextualize these songs from the realm of reminiscence, nostalgia, and memory into a specific and accessible narrative to share and relate within the universal musical gamut. It is for aficionados, the curious, and collectors alike. We hope that Iranians around the world will rediscover these songs. This collection is, in some sense, dedicated to a generation in self-imposed mental exile, due to years of war and catastrophe; decades of lies and bombs; a fundamentalist theocracy of reformist shams; addiction; isolation and alienation; unemployment, and inflation. These are voices and stories that may again prove relevant to a psychologically damaged and spiritually corrupt society, a society whose discontents recall the latter years of the Shah's rule. The recordings excavated here are highly sexual musings, voluble love songs, and simple folk tunes. In many of these songs, there are subtle voices of political protest. "Perhaps I told this before: one sunday afternoon two years I went out to see the farewell event of a band that I never heard of, Dagpauwoog, but I knew all of its members (including Rutger Zuydervelt) and was pleasantly surprised by at least two concerts: soccerCommitee use of voice and guitar blew me away (the female answer to Oren Ambarchi I thought) and Wouter van Veldhoven, who played some analogue synthesizer, a music box, an ancient tape delay. A silent concert, in which every crackle could be noted loud and clear (the presence of a wooden floor added a nice texture, I must admit). Since then I heard bits of his music, but not a lot (why? I wondered), but here he appears in the legendary Mort Aux Vaches series. I can't detect a date on the cover. Back then I had a closer look at the curious equipment of Van Veldhoven, but it wasn't easy to make any sense out of it. As far as I can remember the system contains of some sort of tape-loop or tape-delay unit, in which sounds are fed but not erased, so as the piece unfolds sounds are layered onto eachother. These sounds might be the aforementioned music box, but here on his 'Mort Aux Vaches' this can also be melodica, bells or other, more obscured sounds. There is certainly a link to be made with the work of Machinefabriek, but Van Veldhoven plays some highly nice moody music of his own. It sort of falls somewhere in between electronic and acoustic music. One can hear the electronics playing their part but there is also much intimate sounds coming from acoustic sources. An excellent blending of both ends, crafting together three lovely intimate pieces of music. Not yet reaching the same fame as Machinefabriek, but certainly on his way." (FdW). 		EXPERIMENTAL

VIRULENCE was originally formed in Southern California in 1985. The lineup was vocalist KEN PUCCI, guitarist SCOTT HILL, bassist MARK ABSHIRE and drummer RUBEN ROMANO. Their primary influences were Black Flag, Melvins and Bl'ast. In 1989 Abshire left the band and was replaced by GREG MCCAUGHEY, and soon after the group's debut album If This Isn't A Dream was released on Alchemy Records (Melvins, Neurosis, RKL, Poison Idea, etc.). Shortly after the album's release, Alchemy folded, the album was lost in obscurity, and the Virulence disbanded (re-forming later with a different vocalist as FU MANCHU). Southern Lord's reissue includes all the tracks from the debut album, along with early demons and live tracks. ESOTERIC are pleased to continue their series of CD reissues of the catalogue of Finnish Progressive group WIGWAM with their classic 1976 album THE LUCKY GOLDEN STRIPES& STARPOSE , the band s eighth album and their second UK release on VIRGIN. Formed in Helsinki in 1969, the band featured the talents of British Keyboard player and vocalist JIM PEMBROKE. By the time this album was recorded the band had been through line-up changes that saw original members JIM PEMBROKE and drummer RONNIE OSTERBERG joined by PEKKA RICHARDT (Guitar), MANS GROUNDSTROEM (Bass) and HESSU HIETANEN (Keyboards). The album saw WIGWAM build on their international fan base through compositions such as Colossus , Never Turn You In, Sane Again and Eddie And The Boys . This Esoteric reissue, in full co-operation with LOVE RECORDS in Finland, marks the album s debut release in the UK and is long overdue and includes both sides of WIGWAM s 1975 single Tramdriver b/w Wardance as bonus tracks 		60s/70sPSYCH/PROG/FOLK
