0277913 LP AK 357 8026575357112 AKARMA	AUDIENCE - AUDIENCE (IT) Audience is one of the most interesting groups in the British panorama of the late sixties / early seventies. Their sound was a manifestation of their desire to experiment with and masterfully blend different musical styles, such as rock, folk, jazz, and blues. If we must make comparisons, Jethro Tull immediately leaps to mind, particularly for the bands use of flute. Audience gained moderate notoriety thanks to their constant gigging, and they soon released this 1969 self-titled debut, which featured an excellent use of (predominantly acoustic) guitar (Howard Werth) and equally high-quality flute, sax and clarinet playing (Keith Gemmell), not to mention the distinctive voice of Werth, and their simple, but effective arrangements (in a period when pomp prog rock reigned supreme). "Maidens Cry," brings to mind "Stairway To Heaven," but it was actually written two years before the Zeppelin-penned opus. The combination of Howard Werths vocals and Keith Gemmells versatile use of sax, flute and clarinet is just immediately highly fascinating. Almost all tracks have a slightly unsettling atmosphere, originating in a clever use of dissonance, without being quirky. On A Meadow - Lea has good fuzz guitar paired to pastoral lyrics, while Mona Lose bears overt traces of malice. Burning The Weed sounds quite surprisingly akin to US Kaleidoscope. 0306047 LP TIME 700 TIMELESS	BONZO DOG DOO-DAH BAND - GORILLA The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (also known as The Bonzo Dog Band, The Bonzo Dog Dada Band and, colloquially, as "The Bonzos") are a band created by a group of British art-school denizens of the 1960s. Moving over to Liberty Records, the Bonzos released their first album, Gorilla, that included "Jazz, Delicious Hot, Disgusting Cold" which savagely parodied their early "trad" jazz roots and featured some of the most deliberately inept jazz playing ever recorded. The record company only allowed two hours of studio time per track, so it was completed in a single take to allow for the far more complex "The Intro and the Outro" in which every member of the band was introduced and played a solo, starting with genuine band members. One of the key eccentrics of the period and a successful collaborative lyricist for Cream ("I Feel Free," "Sunshine of Your Love"), poet/percussionist/vocalist/trumpet player Pete Brown was one of the many artists to arise from the British beat movement in the mid- to late '60s. Once he broke up with Graham Bond, Brown helped form the Battered Ornaments, hoping to work with musicians whose skills didn't dwarf his own. The group fell in line with prog artists like Syd Barrett, Deep Purple, and Roy Harper. Pete Brown and Piblokto! produced this much heavier rocker in 1971. 'Aeroplane Head Woman', with its heavy guitar riff, could have come from Deep Purple and the title song, 'Thousands On A Raft', with mock-serious lyrics and a very catchy chorus wouldn't have been out of place on Jack Bruce's Songs For A Tailor. The musicianship is excellent, particularly from the fine young guitarist Jim Mullen and respected percussionist Rob Tait. Brown's songwriting is, as always, lyrically amusing, clever, and just plain weird. "Snafu" is almost a jazz album, deeply rooted in the avant-garde - with its Charles Mingus cover version, some tracks that play backwards etc. Its what the British press wouldve once called "jazz-tinged". There are much medieval influences here, but the overall aesthetics are not luckily very idealized or fantasy related, but sincere and realistic, filled with mystery, misery and violence. Music is peaceful but partly disturbing too. "Bluebell" was quite good track, and the last song "Autumn Childhood" is very weird with strange rhythm changes and several parts. "The Midnight Hanging of A Runaway Serf" was also quite affecting in its brutality and realism. "Graveyard" is also very beautiful and quite accessible song, but maybe best of them all is "Gypsy girl & Rambleway", describing a love affair with very raw medieval sounds. Comparing Gentle Giant the album against the next several releases, it's amazing how much they were able to refine their sound, expand their musical palette, and take advantage of the broad range of skills and backgrounds of their members. 0338242 LP AK 256 AKARMA	LEAF HOUND - GROWERS OF MUSHROOM Pete French, a South Londoner, had played with his cousin Mick Halls in various rock/blues outfits like Switch and Joe Poe before teaming up with with Bob Brunning to form the Brunning Sunflower Blues Band. By 1969 hed moved on to Black Cat Bones, in which Halls later joined him. In the latter half of 1970 they evolvedf into Leaf Hound, Moving away from the blues towards the heavier sounds of groups like Led Zeppelin, Free, and Black Sabbath. Signed to Decca, they allegedly made Growers of Mushrooms in 11 hours straight in Mayfairs Spot studios, late in 1970. Overseen by producer Paul Lynton, it features some incisive guitar work and raw, powerful vocals. The best numbers include Drowned My Life in Fear, Stagnant Pool and Sad Road To The Sea. This eponymous album has been released in November 69; the songs are well structured with fine melodies and good guitar. 0332741 LP JPR 7105 JACKPOT	MIJ - YODELING ASTROLOGER "Yodeling Astrologer" (aka: Color By The Number) could be considered an anomaly, a one-off or a miracle of circumstance in the history of psychedelic pop music. Mij, a.k.a. Jim Holmberg was discovered by ESP owners while playing in Washington Square Park in the summer of 1968. His style and persona mesmerized the label heads, and he explained to them a recent auto accident had fractured his skull but left him changed. He perceived sound, color and vision differently and he had funneled this new world of perception directly into his music. All this was enough to warrant getting Mij into the studio to lay down a record of his rambly, cosmic folk songs. The entire album was recorded in three hours, first-takes and impromptu production intact, then pressed up and introduced to the world shortly thereafter. To focus on the yodeling aspect of the Yodeling Astrologer would miss some of the depth of this album. Not just a hippie novelty act of the time, this is a truly thoughtful and somewhat frenzied document. Like Buffy St. Marie's "Meditations", Linda Perhacs' "Parallelograms" or "Cold Fact" by Rodriguez, this is an album of sincere folk songs colored with subtle psychedelic touches. Uneasy reverberations and soft echoes glide over Holmbergs breezy songs, creating a consistent sonic environment as spontaneous as it is intriguing. All songs and male vocals are by Martin Cockerham, who writes very hummable tunes with biting lyrics. Some collectors fondly label it a "lost classic", since many people did re-discover it. Their debut album, St Radigunds (B&C, 1971), was an innovative work, with Barbara Gaskin on vocals, Julian Cusack on violin, Martin Cockerham on guitar and Tony Cox on electronic keyboards. This sequel, Old Boot Wine was slightly less innovative and disruptive although the textures got thicker (cello, flute) and jazzier. Not only this, the original painting used for the LP artwork has also recently come to light, and we are lucky enough to reproduction this. This is a superb collection of 60s UK sike pop with a mix of American sunshine pop. Finally after 40 years the album is seeing the light of day for the first time! The title on the new album 'Smakar Sontag' (Tastes Sunday) reflects over the time passed since "Rubicon" and the trials and tribulations offered, a somewhat dark stew one might think. True in a sence but it also contains material written over a time span of more than 12 years, so one could say that this record is the essence of Abramis Brama today; Where theyve been, where theyre at, and where theyre going! Since "Rubicon" theyve lost original drummer Jansson (now with Witchcraft), added guitarist Rob (borrowed from Backdraft) and drummer Trisse (from Grand Magus). Top notch quality ingredients right there! Eskaton were one of the greatest of all of the French rock groups, the Magma references seem incidental in the light of the very powerful music they created for themselves and their audience. The idea behind the project was to play comprehensive swedish pop songs with a complex and experimental foundation. This ambition grew both from their multifaceted musical taste and the fact that they had been playing in such diverse genres as prog rock, death metal and electronica for at least 10 years when the band started. They decided to try and write songs without genre based consideration, which resulted in the self released 6-track mini-cd called 'Villebrad' in 2005. This recording - which starts with the bombastic progressive rock song "Skuggorna" and ends with the mellow trip hop tune "Luftficka" - is certainly weird, but it helped the band in narrowing down their sound. In 2006, multi instrumentalist David Hallberg joined the band, and they started work on a full length album. Villebrad soon gained interest from a couple of record labels to release their next effort,an album that sonically went deeper into both the 80s new wave influences (that had only been hinted on the mini-cd) and the prog rock side of the band. They decided to sign a contract with Swedish indie label Transubstans records, who relased the album in early 2007. 'Alla ar har utto jag' recieved predominantely positive reviews and gave the band an even stronger drive to develop their craft. During the summer of 2007, 'Villebrad' joined forces with bassist Petter Broman and the quartet immediately began writing new songs, a process that ended with the completion of their latest album "Ultrarapid" in the summer of 2008. With this recording they wanted to combine a strong, electronic pulse consisting of Petter and Eriks beat section and a cold, ethereal atmosphere created by layers of guitars, synthesizers and vocals. 'Shades Of Deepest Purple from the BBC Archives 1967-1971'. With this second excavation of previously unreleased live BBC session performances spanning the period 1967 - 1971, Shapes And Sounds becomes a series and Volume Two features a completely different line up of bands from last years' set. Pride of place on this second edition arguably goes to the Gun, with three astonishing performances that were recorded nearly a year before "Race With The Devil" which illustrate their late 7 menu of mod and psych pop, with cracking versions of Rupert's Peoples "Hold On", Paul Simons "A Most Peculiar Man" and a quite splendid airing of their legendary "Light On The Wall"! The Casuals surprise with the beat of "Midnight Confessions" and "Take Me For A Little While" as well as a fine rendering of "Jesamine", whilst the Mirage perform a live version of their May 1967 single "The Wedding Of Ramona Blair". The Alan Bown play an excellent take of "Magic Handkerchief" and even more interestingly offer two numbers that never appeared on any Bown release, with the self penned progressive popper "Movie Star Baby" and a brilliant interpretation of the Association's "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies". Also with three tracks on Shapes And Sounds are Wales' Bystanders, who turn in a lovely version of "Royal Blue Summer Sunshine Day" as well as a glorious homage to the Byrds with "Renaissance Fair". Even better and long talked about in collectors circles but never previously released is their absolutely stunning rendition of "I Am The Walrus", which Top Sounds are sure will disappoint no-one! Sourced from an off air recording of their only British television appearance on Disco 2, Killing Floor perform "Milkman" from their Out Of Uranus LP in superb quality (the TV show was wiped decades ago) and of similarly heinous rarity are live tracks from Portrait and Katch 22, who turn in forceful renderings of "Born To Be Wild" and "The Price Of Lov" respectively (the latter of which is better than the Status Quo cover!) The sound quality is absolutely superb throughout, with twelve of the sixteen tracks sourced from original BBC Transcription records. The other performances have been taken from excellent off air recordings and similarly shine and though few of the tracks on the collection needed much enhancement at all, all have nevertheless been professionally restored and mastered. The presentation is immaculate and as with the previous Shapes And Sounds release, Artholeghraphics have designed a memorable period flavoured package.

It is hard to imagine Bryn Jones' idea behind a low threshold in releasing albums. However, Uzi, among other early Muslimgauze releases, isn't an album offering fine four-minute electronica tracks -- it is purely a theme album. The three-minute pieces are simply variations of each other, based on a rhythm track and occasional background sounds. These pieces aren't much when listening to them individually, but as a whole Uzi can be very stimulating. It basically follows the rules of classical minimalism: a continuous, pulsing rhythm track in the foreground and a slowly variating theme in the background. That is very typical of late-'80s Muslimgauze records, but on Uzi the effect of on the listener can be very strong. That's why Uzi may not, however, give anything to a typical listener of avantgarde electronica, but to any fan of Muslimgauze it is a must-have.
