0335316 LP RSLP 44 ROOT STRATA	BARN OWL - CONJURER The Conjurer is the latest offering by Bay Area duo BARN OWL. This new long player finds EVAN CAMINITI and JON PORRAS finally (by way of an actual recording studio) documenting something that is a bit closer to their very heavy live sets, with expanded peaks of white light distortion and enormous valleys of bottom end. Each side opens with a brief funeral dirge to set the mood, a precession of bare bones drum beats and bell like guitar statements that bridge the gap to the wider open spaces of the almost side long "Across The Desert Of Ash" and "Ancient Of Days." It may seem obvious, or even a little overwrought, but it has to be said that these guys really do evoke all kinds of cinematic drama with their music. Apocalyptic westerns, bleak melodramas, mother nature fever dreams, it all seems to come to mind amid the evening guitar passages, incantations, flute tones, and finally, the solo piano that emerges lost among the electric mayhem to close the album. Considering the amount of terrain, The Conjurer is far from being scattered or rushed sounding. The record as a whole moves at a crafted even rhythm, slowly merging from one scene of violence to the next of almost silent recovery, then back up the mountain again. Although their signature hit led many to assume that they were a Bay Area band, Fever Tree actually hailed from Houston, Texas. "San Francisco Girls" quickly emerged as a staple of American underground FM radio, and won the band an international audience after becoming an airplay favorite of influential British DJ John Peel. "San Francisco Girls" is also the centerpiece of Fever Trees self-titled first LP, one of the periods most distinctive debut efforts. As the album demonstrates, the quintet was adept at incorporating jazz and classical influences, ambitious song structures and resourceful production touches. Unfortunately, Lee and the bands body of available recordings is relatively small, making Sundazed Musics release of a previously-unheard full-length vintage Arthur Lee and Love album a major musical event. Love Lost was recorded in 1971, during a brief, little-known period during which Love was signed to Columbia Records. Lee and the then-current Love lineup-bassist Frank Fayad, guitarist Craig Tarwater and drummer Don Poncher-recorded an albums worth of new material for the label. But after the band left the company, the recordings sat unreleased and unheard until now. A bad vocalist could ruin this band so I'm actually kind of grateful that there are no vocals. One thing I appreciate is that the sound of the recording is not retro per se. The foursomes expansive talents and formidable creative chemistry allowed the musicians to integrate an array of folk, jazz, pop and R&B elements, infusing their eclectic stylistic mix with a playfully psychedelic spirit that perfectly captured the experimental sensibility of the times. Traffics historic 1967 debut LP (produced by noted studio vet Jimmy Miller) was released in the U.K. as Mr. Fantasy, but initially reached U.S. shores in altered form as Heaven Is in Your Mind/Mr. Fantasy. One song "Wandel zur Ruh" is based on the lyrics of a Styrian Writer, Paula Grogger. The song "Namenlos" ("Nameless") is based around a cemetery in Vienna which contains the remains of souls who drowned in the river Danube. The album is housed in a lavish digipack with a 16-page booklet created by Benjamin König (Lunar Aurora) from Sperber Illustrations, based around photographs by lead singer Dea. Los Mockers started out in as a quais-skiffle/Teddy Boys outfit. The band: Alberto (Beto), drums, nickname: "The Spiritual One"; Esteban, organ and backing vocals, nickname: "The Philosopher"; Jorge, lead guitar and backing vocals, nickname: "The Nice One"; Julio, bass and vocals, nickname: "The Quiet One"; Jorge (Polo), rhythm guitar and vocals nickname: "The Wild One". by 1965, they called themselves "Los Encadenados" (The Chained Ones); they really lived up (or down) to their name, using chains instead of straps for their guitars. They wore beige cardigans, played Route 66 in seedy bars, and came to be called The Notorious. Yet today the band members are scattered around, lost. The drummer, Beto, died in a motorcycle accident. As they say, all is music, the music is all: the great What a Life, the irresistible My Baby, the experimental and formidable Empty Harem. A heady twenty-one tracks, including two live bonus tracks (I Just Want To Make Love to You, Willy Dixon) and Oh Baby, We Got A Good Thing Goin, recorded at Radio Ariel Uruguay and on Argentine TV. The box also contained what would become the Two Organs" record (three poplars) and the music for the films "Door" and "Not Yet", but "MIZU NO NAI UMI" is maybe the most gentle and "gesture-less" of the bunch, and seems now to me to be a tribute of how important the music of Folke Rabe and Phill Niblock was / is to me. (At this time it was still almost impossible to hear the pure music of Tony Conrad, as "Outside the Dream Syndicate" was his only commercial recording). It showed that Saviours were able to take that early Bay Area metal sound and make something a little more unique out of it. While Accelerated Living doesnt exactly have the band in a holding pattern, it does show that the band has gone as far as they can go with tweaking that sound. What theyre doing instead is doubling down on what they do well - the chugga-chugga riffs, the harmonized leads, a general sense of reckless abandon - and throwing out the occasional solo that's straight from the Kerry King/Jeff Hanneman playbook. The band also gotten stronger at writing memorable hooks, and the strained holler/singing is less a liability this time around. If Laurent Perrier preserves his trademark, namely big dub bubbles, frictional clinking, mechanical repetition, high-pulse sequences, maintained tension, 'Trope' manages to exude a clever syncretism of past and present works keeping its coldness by borrowing some elements from the elegant IDM, filtered and sophisticated (Somersault), powerful and jerky rhythmic à la lfo (Throb), saturated hip-hop/big beat drums on high tech microsound (Disruption), motives sometimes more playfull (Look.part.5), airial dubby cocoon (Solar), pronounced melody, to end in a minimal electronic sound which could appear in 'purr',without giving away his intent on the next album. The general feel of the album, different from his previous works,moves away from the dark industrial musicality,to lend it a more abstract, brighter and futuristic tonality, but still keeping its clinical cold effect. The compositions stay very precise, rather minimal, opening up more and more to bring out the texture and the topography of the sound without losing its continuous flow. Anybody familiar with the name of Phill Niblock would probably characterise his work by the sound of long sonorous drones producing rich overtones, usually combined with a visual element, as Niblock before moving into composition was an active photographer and filmmaker. While he usually is known for his films from the "movement of people working" series alongside performances of his music, Niblock's early works stand apart as unique objects. The integrity and consistency of his style is fully on display in these seldomly seen screened 16mm sound films wonders, that are: MORNING (1966-69) from an idea by Phill Niblock and Jean Claude Van Itallie, filmed by PN, text by Lee Worley and Michael Corner, with members of the Open Theater Group.Black and White 16mm film.
