There's the darker side of Flying Nun indie by way of Skin Graft on their Unclean Ghost single and there's the AM radio conspiracy theorist Kennedy family bad vibes occultism of their Funeral Home Sessions EP, and now there's this-their third single and fifth release. This record swings from Spacemen 3 to Jesus and Mary Chain to Dinosaur Jr. to the Puddle to Mayo Thompson without a lot of effort. All of the weirdness is distills into a single that hangs around in the neighborhood of their earlier singles. A tight pop music take on a thousand-million little bits of twenty-five years of underground music, all kind of run through the energy you get from recording and practicing around ghosts, corpses, milk crates full of fan club vinyl and pictures of obscure American Aristocrats in a downtown funeral home in Columbus, OH. REPRESSED!!! TYVEK's first single is a savage broadside that attacks car culture (Side B) and the mass media's promotion of anti-psychotic drugs for the youth as a cure for demonic possession (Side A). The sound is distorted, all cheap old guitars and busted up drums, and the playing is usually teetering on the edge of ineptitude, at times falling off completely. The tunes and lyrics are straight outta overgrown abandoned lots and decrepit playgrounds, and there are plenty of strange little bones on the cracked sidewalks to puncture your bike's Kevlar tires and brand new tubes. Sonically, Tyvek is inclined to agree with the rough simplicity of groups like Crass and the minimal bashing of early Kleenex or Slits. That's all well and good, but, straight up: it's Midwestern blood that flows through these grooves and Tyvek owes a lot to their retarded regional ancestors: the Pagans, Electric Eels and Rocket From The Tombs, etc. Already a DIY classic. Mutual friend NOELLE SCAGGS of the REBIRTH introduced MAYER HAWTHORNE to Stones Throw label head PEANUT BUTTER WOLF. Despite being skeptical Wolf decided to give Mayer a listen. "He showed me two songs and I didn't understand what I was listening to," Wolf recalls. "I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of-I couldn't believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments." The "retro" tag is added to almost any contemporary work that sounds like it was originally recorded between 1966 and 1974, and Hawthorne, among the newest contributors to the genre. On the title cut Hawthorne combines infectious falsetto vocals, fatback drums, and an epic horn section that would make Motown's Berry Gordy grin with excitement. (Think Jackson 5, Joe Bataan, Sylvers, Lamont Dozier, as well as J-Dila) The flip side contains the equally uplifting track, "I Wish It Would Rain" for good measure. On this track Mayer dials it down a few notches with a soulful ballad a la Smokey Robinson, Eddie Kendricks, and The Four Tops. Dream The Red Clouds is a collaboration between ambient artist Jeff Greinke, known for his solo works as well as his Land and Hana projects, and Faith & Disease. I was previously unfamiliar with Faith & Disease, but they are apparently a Goth oriented band who have had releases on the Projekt label. Joining Greinke from F&D are Dara Rosenwasser on vocals and Eric Cooley on guitar and bass. Dream The Red Cloud is available as a 21 minute CD or 7" red vinyl, though the vinyl is limited to 300 copies. The music is characterized by gentle guitars and space ambient backdrops, some of which can get a bit trippy, over which Dara's dreamy folk styled vocals flow. The melodies are simple yet seductive and have a bubbling psychedelic quality that swept me away on its magic cloud. Though this is a brief set, 2 of the 4 tracks are in the 8 minute range so we get to hear the artists take the time needed to develop the music. Very nice. "If you've been following underground music of Seattle, you might have already heard music by CRAIG CHAMBERS before. If you haven't, you will now. Chambers is the creative force behind LE SANG SONG, the name for what originated as a solo recording project for songs that for the most part are quieter than those of his other excellent bands (THE LIGHTS, LOVE TAN). Le Sang Song's basic framework is simple: get a good rhythm going, a rolling bass line or laconic guitar strum, paint the corners with more rhythms and harmonies. The result is the same kind of late night living room vibe that I get from listening to heavies like Syd Barrett or Skip Spence. While Chambers draws from folk styles, he pushes his songwriting and varies Le Sang Song's instrumentation to include violin, thumb piano, and other noise makers. Chambers is also an excellent lyricist, something uncommon these days, when vapidity is standard fare. The lyrics are carried by a keen sense of vocal melody. Recorded in 2007, the album sat neglected. Determined to give Le Sang Song the audience it deserves, I dusted off Dragnet Records and decided to put it out myself. Live performances of Le Sang Song are Chambers accompanied by his lovely wife ADRIA GARCIA on guitar/vocals, MATTHEW FORD (Love Tan, FACTUMS, YVES SON ACE) on drums/percussion, a yours truly, MIN YEE (A FRAMES, AFCGT) on bass/vocals."-Min Yee. On Dawn Of The Catalyst each band contributes one extended track, both veering to the more experimental, droning, lurching side of their collective personas. Along with LOS EXPLOSIVOS, LOS MUSTANG 66 are the wildest and heaviest combo in Mexico. They are obviously influenced by 80's/90's bands like Lords of Altamond, Cynics, Fuzztones or The A-Bones or even the CRAMPS, but they also have a personality that emerge here after 5 years of stage perfomances. April Wine formed in late 1969 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. "Fast Train," their first hit, appeared in 1971, the same year as the self-titled debut album. The next year brought the band's first Canadian number one single, You Could Have Been a Lady, from the On Record album. In 1976, The Whole World's Goin' Crazy became the first Canadian album to go platinum and their resulting tour was the first to gross one million dollars. After 1978's First Glance and 1979's Harder...Faster, Just Between You and Me became April Wine's biggest U.S. hit. The single (one of three Top 40 American singles by the band) propelled 1981's Nature of the Beast album to platinum-record status. 1984's Animal Grace was their last album, but in the early 1990s all the original members joined for a Canadian tour, which convinced them to resume recording, they are still recording and touring the world to their ever-loyal fan-base. This CD features the full show the band played at Londons Hammersmith Odeon during their 1981 tour of the UK and includes live version of their two UK hit singles I Like To Rock and Just Between You And Me. "These pieces grew out of my research and interest in just intonation and prime numbers. During my explorations, I came across some interesting prime number sets and wondered what they would sound like. I constructed these pieces using sine wave generators in max/msp. I chose a base frequency (fundamental) for each piece and multiplied that number by each of the prime numbers in a given set to determine the harmonics / partials / overtones. I related the panning and metronome speed of each overtone to its frequency. rhythmically, each sine tone / frequency followed its own 3 beat cycle which created overlapping prime number rhythmic patterns. These pieces are dedicated to James Tenney (1934-2006). They are an acknowledgment of his extraordinary work with alternate tuning systems and just intonation." -Greg Davis. Following in this tradition, Akira Kosemura's latest pop miniature for Someone Good, Polaroid Piano, shares this hazy filmic impression. It's a snapshot of his increasingly personal and evocative piano and electronics pieces, tinted with field recordings (recorded in various locations including recordings from Brisbane and Hobart by Lawrence English) and offered as a series of small but gloriously rich auditory phrases. Comes in 3-panel 'old cut vinyl records' cover ltd. to 500 copies. "From the somewhat forty-five minutes this new discs last, about eight minutes are totally silent. Since putting an excerpt of this in the Vital Weekly podcast, I have to transfer it to my computer and normalized (meaning make it zero DB) and noticed there is also actually music in there. Odd, why should it be so incredibly silent? If you would turn up your volume all the way up in those parts (three minutes at the beginning and five at the end) it would mean ripping your speakers apart in the middle part, when things become so much louder. A Lopezian take on dynamics, perhaps? Since this was recorded for a radio broadcast I am pretty sure these minutes were not broadcasted. Novi Sad from Greece is the youngest 'star' on the scene of microsonic, field recording and laptop artists, with a considerable profile, playing for instance the Gaudemus music week here in The Netherlands (who hardly invite would invite a like minded Dutch artist I'd say) and works for Touch. And quite rightly so: what Novi Sad does, might not be entirely new (but then: who does?), but what he does he does with some excellence. Following his silent intro, there is an outburst of sea wave like noise sound for a while, which forms the absolute counterpoint of the silent intro. The middle part - of the part that actually can be heard - is a sort of organ like drone piece and in the closing part, the organ and the seaside meet up and make a brutal return of cascading sound. Before we leap into silence again, the organ makes the final fade out. Its microsonic in that respect that the changes in this piece are as minimal as they come, whereas the sound has a maximum output - when there is something to be heard of course. In that respect Novi Sad is not microsound at all: the music is loud and abrasive. A really great work, which brings a lot of delight here. Loud, soft, silence, noise, its all there and all brought with elegance and style. Excellent package also." (FdW). 		EXPERIMENTAL

Andreas Resch is working in some potentially interesting areas of sound experimentation and this is a totally worthwhile and highly recommended opera.  AMPLEXUS		 NERELL, LOREN - THE VENERABLE DARK CLOUDS
Loren Nerell is known for his fondness for gamelan music. You get the idea of his blending of music elements when you see that his latest CD was recorded over the last few years in Bali, Java, and... Los Angeles. Modern ambient drone music melds with ancient tribal cultures to form something entirely new, sounding ages old. As usual with Amplexus limited edition 3" singles, the packaging is beautiful, featuring a large 3-fold booklet with photography by the label's Stefano Gentile. Being a single, this is 21 minutes of new music. The journey of musical exploration ends far too soon, but it is very, very good while it lasts. The textures are rich, as drones blend with sparse tribal beats and ancient instruments, such as the crystal clear but other-worldly bell tones in "Eclipse". Just reading the credits for the instrumentation used is fascinating, as I couldn't tell you what most of them are. They are fused into a hypnotic mix of soothing sounds, truly transporting you to another place and time. The music is simultaneously dark and yet spiritually uplifting. "Within the Cloud" is appropriately named, as it is light and delicate, though again with a dark quality that keeps this far from new age realms. This track takes surprisingly smooth musical turns, given at least three distinct movements over its less than four-minute run. The disc is clearly intended to be played at one sitting, as it all runs together as a single piece of music. "Ablution" begins with flutes, rain, thunder, and a rooster crowing. The spatial effect is amazing, as the rainfall seems to be coming from deep within the speakers. Then, just when I'm fully drawn in, it's over. More, please. -Phil Derby, Sequences. 		AMBIENT
