Although Schultze oversaw the production of the album rather than playing on it (which he definitely didnt!), the synth star turn is Masanori Takasaki who was later to find new age fame and fortune under the name of Kitaro. This is space rock at its finest and the bands extended compositions attracted favourable comparisons with both Tangerine Dream and Pink Floyd, and even at times the vocal style of the Moody Blues. Identical and deluxe reissue of this deliriously mega rare and hardly known Itoh Kiyoko record. Normally if you want to score a copy of the original vinyl you are required to donate most of your vital organs to some yakuza-typed black marketer, but luckily enough, this one here is easier to attain without ripping out a lung or a liver to pound off. The CD is housed in an eye-pooping foldout jacket. It was the final album Itoh recorded in 1971 and on this effort she got backed up by again a bunch of Tokyo underground heavy weights such as J.A. Seazer and Kuni Kawachi of the Happenings Four. On this album, Itoh's talent is fully flowering and apart from merely eargasmatic songs she hushes into being, atmospheric city-life field recordings and well balanced sound snippets find their way in and between her compositions. These flashes of cosmopolitan Tokyo city life grandeur and the feeling of desperate desolation it tails along elevate her impeccable melancholic love ballads and softly erotic excursions to even higher levels of artistic expression, catapulting the whole affair towards eerie stratospheric heavenly delightful realms. Sadly enough, both of her albums failed to catch on, not poppy enough, too melancholic, way too creative, artistically too advanced, hard to categorize and probably even too erotically sophisticated without degrading herself to mere carnal sonic one hit wonders. In one word, a delicate soft psychedelic wonderland avenue of an album that will entrap simple airhead listeners into a deadlock without giving them the chance to fully explore the absinthial pleasures it conceals. If one only cares to listen to what lies underneath its surface layer, a new form of aural addiction will commence to besiege you. One of the greatest underrated delicate psychedelic female vocal albums to seep out of Japan. Original copies just never surface and if they do, you have to trade in - in most cases - a limb in order to take one home with you. So this eye-popping delicately crafted reissue might be just the thing you need. If you got entangled into Kaji Meiko's sonic universe, you should try Itoh Kiyoko. All time highest recommendation and forget about original vinyl copies, they are even scarcer that all your Blues Creation, Too Much and Oz Days records together. Mind Funk were never a grunge band per se - but they did release this, their fine debut album on March 12, 1991, and with a more alternative frame of mind being prevalent in rock music at the time. Obviously, given the timing of the release of their self-titled debut album, all eyes today fall on the shoulders of guitarist Jason Everman who had featured in both Nirvana and Soundgarden and whilst this did help garner press interest for Mind Funk, it did unfairly push them into the grunge arena. In truth, the band began life as Mind Fuck. Guitarist Louis Svitek had worked with fellow guitarist Jason Coppola in Chemical Waste, and the pair had worked with bassist John Monte in thrash crossover band M.O.D. Singer Pat Dubar from the straight-edge outfit Uniform Choice and drummer Reed. St. Mark, who had drummed with legendary avant-garde Swiss metallers Celtic Frost. The band secured a deal with Epic Records, who, hardly unsurprisingly, forced a change of name to the more media-friendly Mind Funk and they arrived in a blaze of publicity, the media receptive as well. The 70s produced a string of great albums, mostly tinged with an acoustic, jazzy, even folky flavour, until, in the late 70s and early 80s she found her way into a more pop orientated sound, which is the point at which this collection finds her. Produced by the ever reliable Steve Lillywhite, "Walk Under Ladders" was Joan's eighth LP and comfortably reached the UK's Top Ten, and peaking at number 6 on its release in 1981. "Intolerance" contains the Sounds magazine single of the week, "2541," a lament for lost love. Other rockers include "Now That You Need Me," a very strong pop-rock song that was slated to be the single from the never made third Hüsker Dü LP for Warner Bros. On the more introspective side of things, there is "The Main," a traditional ballad in waltz time that tells the story of one man's descent into hell. "Rollar Rink" captures the atmosphere of a roller-skating party that has too many guests. But there is also an equally innovative sound element to his work and he has been embraced by the experimental music community as well. Bruce performed at the Chocolate Monk curated Colour Out of Space festival in 2008 and was chosen as an opening act for Throbbing Gristle's reunion tour in the spring of 2009. During McClure's performances the optical sound signals from each projector are fed through banks of guitar pedals, manipulated live, and played at extremely high volumes through the P.A. system. The different loops phase in and out of each other resulting in what could be described as a power electronics version of the early tape experiments of Steve Reich and Terry Riley, while sparser sections have an off-kilter minimal techno feel reminiscent of Plastikman and the early works of Thomas Brinkmann. This album features four excerpts from a professionally recorded performance in early 2009 at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
