The idea for this great 45 was born as the guys (and Mrs Hamper) sat smoking pipes and listing to Jimmy McGriff classic 'Last Minute' on the dansette in the front parlour. As chance should have it at 'that very minute' an ice cream van pulled up outside playing the Buzzcocks classic Boredom on its chimes. Following a quick phone call to their trusted organist and friend James Taylor, they all bundled down into the cellar and recorded this debut classic of Jazz punk. Liles has developed a compositional technique that makes individual sonic shifts as compelling as the music itself. The tones arise from submarine-crushing depths into the tails of comets, except when they are suddenly transported into the gut of a mountain. Or into the strangely populated belly of a whale. Harmonicas within crystals within faerie fyre? Inside every out-worldly dream-drone is a debris field of small, lovingly constructed noise stabs which strike like matches or coil like cobras. This monstrous soul goes from grumbling angrily to mowing the heavens. Parts even cross into early Swans territory with aggressively fractured pacing. But all roads lead to the final track which is an epic length doom metal anthem of sweating proportions. Wave after wave of crushing fuzz slowly pummel speakers into diamonds and rust. A relentless solar rotorvating blasterpiece. Which brings us to part 3 of this 2 CD set. Both CDs have been composed to also be played simultaneously, in a much more useable fashion than the Zaireekas of the world. So, if "Tezcatlipoca" is overground and "Quetzalcoatl" is underground (or, more likely, the reverse) their combination must be all things..and no things. Maybe the sound of the end of things. In this context it speaks to a disconnection to place rather than to people. Fitting a square peg into a round hole CAN, however, be a good thing. Edward Ka-Spel united with Alena Boikova and Martin Heuser in Finland to herald the coming of Spring and managed to paint several startling tone poems that reflect this sense of Ulkimaalaiset. The trio settings were improvised with an intimacy, conveying both the beauty and loneliness of exploring a strange, unpopulated place. Sometimes Heusers piano plays against Ka-Spels and Bikovas electronics with the quiet subtlety and austere sweetness of a more musical John Cage/David Tudor collaboration. Occasionally the spirits (and maybe even the ghosts) of Aho and Sibelius are inadvertently conjured. This triumvirate is so well matched that they seem to create air above mountains. Two separate releases present with four very distinct pieces of loud, quiet, and loud. Cloudbursts of angelic rain bewitching the souls of the ever wandering Ulkomaalaiset. Easter in rural Finland isn't exactly the most exciting holiday. Everything is closed, the few people that are normally there seem to vanish and even the mosquitoes maintain a respectful distance. Martin Heuser somehow found himself in Karis (also known as Karjaa for, in Finland, most of the places have 2 names) with nothing to do. He had flown North from his birthplace in South Brazil to avoid military service and claim a spot at the delightful Lrkkulla College - but at Easter 2007 he very much felt like an outsider. The college was virtually empty. Likewise Edward Ka-Spel (an Englishman) and Alena Boikova (a Russian) found themselves at the same place at the same time, anxious to celebrate the coming of Spring but not quite sure how to do it. A casual conversation over a bottle of Chilean wine, procured BEFORE the shops closed, revealed that Martin played classical piano. Ka-Spel, a little excited by this news, declared that the three should make an album. In fact they made two. They will probably make another one at some time in the future. What else a poor foreign boy (or girl ) do in Finland? Ulkomaalaiset means "Foreigners" in Finnish. The name was decided upon in a truly democratic way as all found the word to be a beautiful one. The band would like to thank Stefan at Lrkkulla College for making this all possible, and Chris & Heather at BLRR for allowing the music to be heard by a wider public. The band from Wiesbaden and former Xhol Caravan stood out for their pretty lengthy improvisations holding barely any vocals. The band became quite well-known with their two LPs released on Ohr. On Saturday, October 24, 1970, they performed at the third Essen Pop & Blues Festival at the Gruga hall. At that time, Hansi Fischer, one of the founders, had already gone on to Embryo. The whole festival had been recorded semi-professionally on soundboard by Roland Verheyen, an assistant to the promoter Konrad Mallison. The event's master tapes are partly preserved. Lavishly remastered the CD provides a quite acceptable sound, although the drums seem to be too loud. They are hardly known, as their own LP, recorded in the Robert Meilhaus Studio, didn't get beyond the so-called metal acetate, a pre-state which can be played. In summer 1972, only 10 copies were produced by Meilton; they have never appeared in collector circles. These records could probably be sold for a four-digit amount today. The CD contains the five tracks from the LP plus eight instrumentals from 1970, then soundtrack to the TV series "Sommer in Sizilien" [Summer in Sicily], as well as five demo tracks recorded in the rehearsal room. 0335379 DVD VPDVDA 71 VOICEPRINT	YES - THE LOST BROADCASTS (region 0, ratio 16:9, stereo). The band were invited to record a session for John Peel's Top Gear show in January 1969, the first of many recorded for the BBC, and shortly after secured a recording contract with the giant Atlantic Records label. Over the coming months the band recorded their debut album - the epnymously titled "Yes" (not to be confused with 'The Yes Album' from two years later). The album featured a mix of covers and original material which was fairly representative of the bands live set at this time and was released in July of 1969. The band by now had started performing gigs overseas and from the fifty five concerts performed by Yes in 1968 the band performed a hectic two hundred and three concerts in 1969 and also managed to fit in a number of TV appearances both in the UK and Europe, including the first appearance featured on this DVD filmed for the German television programme 'Beat Club' in November 1969. The tracks performed here are No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed, Looking Around and Survival. Of the three tracks Looking Around and Survival were from the first Yes album and No Opportunity was a Richie Havens song the band had worked up for live performance and would feature as the opening track on the bands second album Time and A Word which would be released in July 1970. Only No Opportunity would be featured in the actual broadcast from this mini live set and was duly broadcast on the 29th of November 1969. In fact an interesting aside is that this particular edition of 'Beat Club' was the penultimate edition to be filmed in black and white. The show would change to colour after the final show of the year on the thirty first of December. The set performed by Yes on this occasion would have been a cut down version of the bands live set, and Jon Anderson introduced the numbers, although he forgets which camera he is on whilst introducing Looking Around, much to the amusement of the rest of the band. The performance is a tight concise and well disciplined one proving that the live work undertaken by Yes in 1969 had sharpened up their musical skills no end. More importantly in terms of footage available from this period very little has survived making this small but historically important piece of film of the original line up of Yes all the more important. The next clip featured here is a colour clip of the band performing Time And A Word. The performance is a lip synched performance as was the norm for many television programmes of the time and the band seem to be enjoying themselves performing the title track of their second album. Despite the good natured performance however there was an underlying tension which had arisen during the recording of Time And A Word. Peter Banks is featured here in possibly one of his last TV appearances with the band he helped to form. Just over seven weeks after this performance Peter Banks was sacked from Yes following a gig in Luton on the 18th of April 1970. Time And A Word the final album to feature Peter as a member of Yes was released in July 1970 by which time Peter's successor Steve Howe was installed as the guitarist in Yes where despite a few periods where he has chosen to play with other bands such as Asia and GTR he has remained ever since. The next section of footage comes from another 'Beat Club' appearance filmed on the 19th of April 1971. The two tracks featured on the programme which was aired on the 24th of April were I've Seen All Good People and Yours Is No Disgrace however researchers recently found a second take of Yours Is No Disgrace which is slightly faster than the original take.
