One of the key eccentrics of the period and a successful collaborative lyricist for Cream ("I Feel Free," "Sunshine of Your Love"), poet/percussionist/vocalist/trumpet player Pete Brown was one of the many artists to arise from the British beat movement in the mid- to late '60s. Once he broke up with Graham Bond, Brown helped form the Battered Ornaments, hoping to work with musicians whose skills didn't dwarf his own. The group fell in line with prog artists like Syd Barrett, Deep Purple, and Roy Harper. Pete Brown and Piblokto! produced this much heavier rocker in 1971. 'Aeroplane Head Woman', with its heavy guitar riff, could have come from Deep Purple and the title song, 'Thousands On A Raft', with mock-serious lyrics and a very catchy chorus wouldn't have been out of place on Jack Bruce's Songs For A Tailor. The musicianship is excellent, particularly from the fine young guitarist Jim Mullen and respected percussionist Rob Tait. Brown's songwriting is, as always, lyrically amusing, clever, and just plain weird. The best British folk-rock band of the late '60s, Fairport Convention did more than any other act to develop a truly British variation on the folk-rock prototype by drawing upon traditional material and styles indigenous to the British Isles. While the revved-up renditions of traditional British folk tunes drew the most critical attention, the group members were also (at least at the outset) talented songwriters as well as interpreters. Released in 1968, FC's debut album owes more to the Byrds than to Pentangle, with soaring harmonies and psychedelic guitars. 0338242 LP AK 256 AKARMA	LEAF HOUND - GROWERS OF MUSHROOM Pete French, a South Londoner, had played with his cousin Mick Halls in various rock/blues outfits like Switch and Joe Poe before teaming up with with Bob Brunning to form the Brunning Sunflower Blues Band. By 1969 hed moved on to Black Cat Bones, in which Halls later joined him. In the latter half of 1970 they evolvedf into Leaf Hound, Moving away from the blues towards the heavier sounds of groups like Led Zeppelin, Free, and Black Sabbath. Signed to Decca, they allegedly made Growers of Mushrooms in 11 hours straight in Mayfairs Spot studios, late in 1970. Overseen by producer Paul Lynton, it features some incisive guitar work and raw, powerful vocals. The best numbers include Drowned My Life in Fear, Stagnant Pool and Sad Road To The Sea. 0338262 CD CRSEG 8 5013929180826 GRAPEFRUIT	SKIP BIFFERTY - SKIP BIFFERTY (UK) They may have been downgraded over the intervening years to a retrospectively-acclaimed, collector-type act, but at the time Skip Bifferty were genuine contenders: significant radio support for their singles, heavyweight management (courtesy of the notorious Don Arden), and afforded Next Big Thing status by the weekly pop papers. Sadly, though, it didn t quite work out. Despite receiving rave reviews, the band s eponymous album failed to elevate them to the premier league, largely due to RCA s bizarre decision not to release it until the summer of 1968 a full year after it had been completed. Not that such record company procrastination matters now, as the album has long been regarded as one of the most dazzling examples of the British psychedelic pop genre. It forms the basis of this new, definitive Skip Bifferty collection, which, for the first time, gathers their entire studio output under one roof. Pride of place goes to three previously unreleased recordings, all taken from the original master-tapes. Jesus Smith (The Other Side Of) is the band s semi-legendary, hitherto-lost debut studio recording, while there are two versions of Skizoid Revolution , a song that has previously only been available with a guest vocal from Alan Hull. As with all Skip Bifferty material, these far superior versions feature the soulful tones of the band s lead singer, the hugely underrated Graham Bell. If you haven't, you will now. Chambers is the creative force behind LE SANG SONG, the name for what originated as a solo recording project for songs that for the most part are quieter than those of his other excellent bands (THE LIGHTS, LOVE TAN). Le Sang Song's basic framework is simple: get a good rhythm going, a rolling bass line or laconic guitar strum, paint the corners with more rhythms and harmonies. Packaged in a custom designed full color book bound sleeve as an edition of 500 copies. In the celestial map of metal, there is, of course, a Big Dipper (Metallica),; but there is also the rare and mysterious Scutum (One Starving Day). OSDs obscure place in the Heavens makes for an interesting study. Almost a sort of Metal-In-Opposition, OSDs progressive/avant-garde tactics pit the glottal plosives of black metal against cosmic atmospherics. The star compound thus formed exhibits some characteristics of the martial brutality of early Swans, with the cinematic aromas of Mogwai, suspended in an Arcturus/Isis matrix. Rasped vocals make appearances throughout, but only at intervals against beds of spacey electronics, pummeling guitars, tribal thunder, swelling strings, free-from freak-outs and minimalist drones. Which, maybe, doesnt really make it metal after all - just a unique and visceral spectral explosion at the edge of the galaxy.

Poet and Provocateur comprises rare live and studio recordings by Serge, Juliette Greco's exquisite ep of Gainsbourg songs that did so much to establish his name, interpretations of some of his finest early songs by contemporaries such s Pia Colombo and Hugues Aufray, Gainsbourg's score for Jacques oniol-Valcroze's film L'Eau a la Bouche (A Game for Six Lovers) and the soundtrack of Michel Boisrond's Voulez-vous danser avec moi? (Come Dance with Me) which saw Gainsbourg make his screen debut in a film which starred Brigitte Bardot, the biggest star in France, with whom he would soon so controversially collaborate. Joann Sfar's film biography, Serge Gainsbourg vie heroïque will be released on January 10 2010. Starring Eric Elmosnino as Gainsbourg, the producton has already been the source controversy due to the suicide of the actress Lucy Gordon who played Jane Birkin.

Instead of creating mere objects of aesthetic seduction, a new form of art is surfacing that invites audiences to transcend the limits of habitual perception. It seeks to shift the observer's attention from the physical objects that stimulate perception to the act of perception itself. Savvas Ysatis and Taylor Deupree were at it again in Deupree's country studio, about two years after the creation of 2007's The Sleeping Morning CD-EP. They gave themselves one week to see what they could create with the studio as a blank canvas, and the two emerged with Hourglass, four songs of carefully crafted pop-infused ambient music destined for release on 12" vinyl. It is limited to 400 numbered copies and comes packaged in a beautifully printed full color jacket.

The genre of sex education-movies boomed massively in Germany in the late Sixties. Based on a (more or less) scientific plot the audience was for the first time confronted with bare facts in form of nudity. In this category successful director Franz Josef Gottlieb shot several pictures even for Oswalt Kolle, the originator of the genre. For production company"Rialto Film" however he adapted a 40 year old book by the Dutch gynecologist Theodoor Hendrik van de Velde to create two (pseudo-) scientific movies for the eager audience: "The Perfect Marriage" (1968) and "Every Night of the Week" (1969). Producer Horst Wendlandt asked his friend Peter Thomas ("Space Patrol", "Jerry Cotton") to compose original scores for both films. Until then they had worked together in numerous "Edgar Wallace" films and other blockbusters. Peter Thomas got honoured with the German Composers Award for his lifework in 2009. Here the composer is in his element again; contemporary jazz and beat arrangements, and unconventional use of the human voice dominate. Together both scores deliver a fascinating insight into the mastery of one of the most prominent composers of the German motion picture industry. Besides this release is a real world premiere: Most of the tracks, so the complete score of "Every Night of the Week" have been discovered in the archives only now, 40 years after their recording. It can be said that Peterson was inspired by the Art Tatum school, but it can also be said that he used this as a jumping off point for his own truly unique style, characterized by incredible virtuosity on his instrument and tidal waves of notes. These rare recordings are taken from two sessions recorded by Peterson at the beginning of his career. The bulk of the music comes from an August 1950 session featuring fellow pianist Ray Brown, while the second session comes from a 1952 session featuring Peterson playing in a quartet format, featuring Ray Brown on bass, Barney Kessel on guitar, and Alvin Stoller on drums. With the help of agent Bernie Besman, and L.A.'s Modern Records, Hooker's first single "Boogie Chillen", unexpectedly went to the top of the R&B charts. The next few years, documented in this album, were a whirlwind of hits for Hooker, who often hopped from label to label whenever the opportunity arose, changing his name to escape contracts, before finally ending up at Vee-Jay in 1955. And the hits piled up. Throughout the fifties, Hooker spread his own brand of raw, foot-stomping Delta blues across America, and the world, becoming one of the most idolized and imitated musicians in the history of blues, and paving the way for the blues-based rock & roll explosion of the 1960s. These 27 vintage tracks are taken from his earliest recordings for the Excelsior and Savoy labels, just as he was beginning to rise to stardom. These early Excelsior tracks (1945-1947) feature jazz-lover Otis, playing firmly in the big-band style of the day, and although Otis was not well-know at the time, his version of "Harlem Nocturne" became a minor hit. In 1948 Otis made history by founding the first strictly R&B club, the Barrelhouse, located in the predominately black neighborhood of Watts (Los Angeles), which soon became the premiere stage for new talent. By 1949 Otis had signed a contract with Savoy, and began recording in the R&B style. Tracks like: "Double Crossing Blues," "Mistrustin' Blues," and "Cupid's Boogie" went straight to number one, and in 1950 alone Otis had ten singles in the R&B Top Ten! "Discovered" by Alan Lomax and his legendary tape recorder while still living in on a Mississippi plantation, Muddy Waters did not become a star until he moved north to Chicago in the early forties, where his flamboyant style and slide-guitar playing would eventually become synonymous with the Chicago blues scene. Waters' first nationwide R&B hit did not come until 1948 with, "I Feel Like Going Home," but from there on out he charted regularly with songs like "Honey Bee", "Louisiana Blues", "She Moves Me", and later "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Just Make Love to Me". His band soon became the most respected (and feared) in the city -especially by local musicians who would inevitably get blown off the stage by Waters and his musical henchmen, who included the legendary harmonica player Little Walter and Willie "Hoochie Coochie Man" Dixon (both stars in their own right).
