108 is the diabolic passion we need to fight everyday to turn ourselves into Buddah. 108 is also a magic and exoteric number present in many mystic religions and cultures. All you need to discover about the real nature of this world: pure fiction! Two cover songs about the diabolic passion from great Italian artists of the 70s like Biglietto per l'Inferno and Franco Battiato. 108 are the evil passions that beset us and we must battle to become Buddha. In Japan, a bell rings 108 times in order to finish the old and welcome the new year. Each stroke is one of 108 earthly temptations a person must overcome. 108 are the techniques of karate and 108 are also the parts of the Buddhist rosary (Japa Mala). This number is often used in the Buddhist religion as well as in Hinduism and its considered sacred to many peoples in the East. The Hindu Kshatriya Dhangars have 108 clans divided into solar and lunar dynasties. They speak from thousands of years of knowledge and a scientific fact known only in the past centuries: the diameter of the sun is almost 108 times the diameter of Earth, the distance from the Sun to the Earth is almost 108 times the diameter of the Sun, and the average distance from the Earth's Moon is almost 108 times the diameter of the Moon. We were fascinated by these astral and religious coincidences and 108 from Ballo delle Castagne is only one a chapter devoted to human evil in all its manifestations. In this context, we must frame the band as a tribute to the Biglietto per l'Inferno or 70 years of Franco Battiato La Convention / Paranoia. Even today many of these remain unknown and unacknowledged masterpieces to the Italian public as well as their authors. We therefore recall a time full of hopes and dreams for millions of men and women, where the utopia of a better world went slowly vanished at the end of the 60s. As the lotus grows in mud without showing any traces that might betray its origins, its leaves and its stem, while floating in water not wet, so it's also the wise man who lives in the world, but is not of the world.

Fifth album and a new six man line up. 12" black vinyl only, the way it should be. Almost seven years of flying under the radar doesn't seem to of bothered these stubborn souls. Back they roll with their second album on Riot Season. 'Happy Birthday', released August last year, plundered a top 30 spot in the Rock-a-rolla end of year charts, in fact it caused quite a stench wherever it was heard. "Channelling the no frills riffage of Black Flag and Melvins before drowning it under a sea of distorted feedback" said the heavy metal magazine Kerrang. "'Intense' is an overused description, but Hey Colossus deserve it. Utterly." wittered the doomed indie mag Plan B. So be it. Now with the addition of the Van Halen Time Capsule they've set their sites on the lights. The majick and jam of Germany in the 70's, and all things dingy, claustrophobic and killer from Whitehouse to The Heads. Recorded in their South London home, Dropout, the sludge and stink of previous efforts still prevails. Ooze ridden basement tapes created under a fug of the most suspicious odour, add in some swamp doom and it begins to fall into place. This fella is a melting pot of libellous ideas and ludicrous intentions. The Question bubbles away for 3-4 minutes, 4 guitars weaving, 3 banjo's jizzing, 2 voices crumbling and a band trying to work it all out. Eventually his master's voice comes in. Like a failed preacher he passes over the information. It all falls into place. The album, this time piece, continues in the same vein over both sides. When it crushes it does so with no protest. When it rocks, it does it with Kraut stylings. When it's metal it is with no doubt. The more you listen the more you hear. Incantations from the other side keep drifting at you. It's more than it is. The last song, Wait Your Turn, spends a while ploughing a one killer riff furrow, before falling off the cliff into a clangathon that will peel the sclera from your eyes. Be alone. Turn the lights out. Blaze one up. Crank it. Wrapped in a sleeve depicting Masonic images taken during the recordings, liner notes from Loess Cos Yuh, the Spanish leading light on all things dark, this 12" is what it's all about. The sound is dark and rough, almost Xpressway-like in its claustrophobic atmosphere. The percolating krautrock stylings of "If You Can't Smoke 'Em" chugs along hypnotically for over 13 minutes to close out the side. Michael is now a member of Warpaint (now signed to Rough Trade). The self-titled debut album features eight tracks of lush noise- drenched stories of passion, disillusion and coming of age in the modern world. Quinn himself, whom still in his early 20's is considered a seasoned player in the post-hardcore scenes in Boston and Seattle. Eventually making the move to the greater Los Angeles area, Corridor wasted no time getting key slots on shows with Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Xu Xu Fang, Winter Flowers and Rainbow Arabia, as well as packing up the cello, guitars, samplers and keyboards in his old VW wagon and performing unforgettable live shows at dives and art galleries across the USA. Taking his influences from dark-wave Michael Gira's Swans, midieval English folk and gypsy-jazz master, Django Reinhart, he makes sounds that only few can dare to categorize. Quinn paid his dues as a virtuosic drummer in various Boston hardcore bands in his early teens and eventually going completely solo as a drummer, cellist, guitarist and noisemaker. His self titled debut is a whirlpool of dark lush noise cast in a post-hardcore and folk shell, bringing to mind Joy Division, Swans, 70's Kraut Rock and Bright Eyes. Standing apart from most one-bands with a laptop snd whatever, Corridor's live performance showcases his raw talent. The virtuostic, gypsy-esque guitar work over looping layers of atmospheres and noise, has audiences dropping jaws. A completely self-taught musician, Corridor's chops on guitar, cello, and drums would have you think he was classically trained. Riding high on a lot more than simply technical prowess, his debut album Corridor/mdcccclxxxi is a spectral, eerie journey that is at once psychedelic, haunting, and original. Completely performed by Quinn himself, the compositions throughout the album are often paradoxal: intense, serene, bleak, and often beautiful all in the same song. 0337896 CD CD 152 GARDEN OF DELIG	XHOL - ESSEN 1970 Xhol's sound was a mix of jazz-rock and psychedelia. The band from Wiesbaden and former Xhol Caravan stood out for their pretty lengthy improvisations holding barely any vocals. The band became quite well-known with their two LPs released on Ohr. On Saturday, October 24, 1970, they performed at the third Essen Pop & Blues Festival at the Gruga hall. At that time, Hansi Fischer, one of the founders, had already gone on to Embryo. The whole festival had been recorded semi-professionally on soundboard by Roland Verheyen, an assistant to the promoter Konrad Mallison. The event's master tapes are partly preserved. Lavishly remastered the CD provides a quite acceptable sound, although the drums seem to be too loud. 0337897 CD CD 153 GARDEN OF DELIG	YGGDRASIL - YGGDRASIL Yggdrasil from Munich named themselves after the world ash or yew tree of the Germanic tribes and played progressive rock of a calmer nature, with flute, violin, and English lyrics. They are hardly known, as their own LP, recorded in the Robert Meilhaus Studio, didn't get beyond the so-called metal acetate, a pre-state which can be played. In summer 1972, only 10 copies were produced by Meilton; they have never appeared in collector circles. These records could probably be sold for a four-digit amount today. The CD contains the five tracks from the LP plus eight instrumentals from 1970, then soundtrack to the TV series "Sommer in Sizilien" [Summer in Sicily], as well as five demo tracks recorded in the rehearsal room. Style: progressive rock slightly influenced by jazz and classical music, however mostly without any wind instruments. There was a sporadic use of the Mellotron and English vocals. Comparable to Streetmark. Udo Preising had come from Electric Mud. Nicky Gebhard later joined Wallenstein, and Martin Buschmann, son of the well-known jazz-musician Rainer Glen Buschmann, joined Cochise. Andrew King interprets a song by Oswald von Wolkenstein, living during the same period, who stands as the an example of a knight. The specialty on both tracks is that both interpreters are singing the songs in the original language: "Mittelhochdeutsch", the language of the literature of that time, spoken during the time of the Staufer emperors. It is quite interesting to hear how good both interpreters are able to pronounce this difficult old language and how well their own music fits to those lyrics. By taking standard pop formats and turning them inside out - the band spelled out the new Commandments of alternarock to a new generation of would-be grunge rockers. In March 1987, as the Pixies were just beginning to gain a reputation around the Boston area, they recorded their first demo, known by Pixies fans as "The PurpleTape". This demo landed the Pixies their first record deal with 4AD, and the 8 songs that appear on their first album "Come On Pilgrim" were culled from this same demo. The title "Winter Fragments" sums up two Apart unreleased albums, put together for this special release: "Fragments Of A Cold Broken Day" and "A Winter Project...". Both albums end a "phase" for this project, born with "Across The Empty Night" and then developed through different (dark) music styles on this double, precious gem! Ex-All My Faith Lost member and co-founder Francis Gri collected over 110 minutes of superb music: mixing different influences and his own research, the link with his original band became thin, but it's even "emotionally" stronger now. The legendary American artist Terry Fox is known for his pioneering work in performance, sculpture, drawing and installation. Throughout his career, Fox (who died in Cologne in 2008), focused on sound as a fundamental artistic material. Many of his most important sound works were realized long before terms such as "sound art" or "audio art" became widely known. This recording, "The Labyrinth Scored for 11 Cats" (1977), is now recognized as an early classic of the audio art genre. It is one of Fox's many works to be inspired by the structure of the labyrinth found on the floor of the famous medieval cathedral of Chartres. For this work, Fox translated the 552 Steps, 11 concentric rings and 34 turns of the floor mosaic into a mesmerizing composition of recorded cat purrs, a sonic phenomenon which is still not fully understood. The "purrs" resonate in a shimmering wall of sound like in an uncanny feline orchestra. This LP recording, the first in a series of major Terry Fox audio works to be released in the future by Choose, is based on a digital version that Fox produced in 2003 in the sound studio of the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. Taking cues from now-obscure progressive blues albums such as On The Boards by Taste and Raw Sienna by Savoy Brown, the deliberately hurried approach forced the band to go with their initial instincts and gut feelings. The three-day recording session was essentially an extended gig, with the band and their amplifiers together in the same room. First and second takes were chosen, with many instrumental parts being spontaneously altered on the fly. These writing and recording processes have produced a bruised and ragged album. Stefs beautiful-ugly vocal melodies and barbed lyrics are lacerated by his searing guitar work, underpinned by Tobys warm bass tones and rattled by Henris fractured, phrenetic drumming. Henri is a keen fan of Warp-style drill n bass, and his parts frequently come across like Mitch Mitchell cut up by Aphex Twin as he leads the band through dizzyingly complex rhythmic figures. "Perhaps I told this before: one sunday afternoon two years I went out to see the farewell event of a band that I never heard of, Dagpauwoog, but I knew all of its members (including Rutger Zuydervelt) and was pleasantly surprised by at least two concerts: soccerCommitee use of voice and guitar blew me away (the female answer to Oren Ambarchi I thought) and Wouter van Veldhoven, who played some analogue synthesizer, a music box, an ancient tape delay. A silent concert, in which every crackle could be noted loud and clear (the presence of a wooden floor added a nice texture, I must admit). Since then I heard bits of his music, but not a lot (why? I wondered), but here he appears in the legendary Mort Aux Vaches series. I can't detect a date on the cover. Back then I had a closer look at the curious equipment of Van Veldhoven, but it wasn't easy to make any sense out of it. As far as I can remember the system contains of some sort of tape-loop or tape-delay unit, in which sounds are fed but not erased, so as the piece unfolds sounds are layered onto eachother. These sounds might be the aforementioned music box, but here on his 'Mort Aux Vaches' this can also be melodica, bells or other, more obscured sounds. There is certainly a link to be made with the work of Machinefabriek, but Van Veldhoven plays some highly nice moody music of his own. It sort of falls somewhere in between electronic and acoustic music. One can hear the electronics playing their part but there is also much intimate sounds coming from acoustic sources. But this theme is extended and made up to date. Despite the rather serious theme of the record this EP features simply excellent decadent music for the dancefloor. It combines elements of classic elektro, synth pop and italo disco.

David Bailey's banned 1973 documentary on the iconic artist. David Bailey, self-taught photographer and one of the prime architects of the Swinging Sixties, broadened his horizons in the early 1970s by making high-profile documentaries for ATV. With his standing among the artistic community, Bailey was given unprecedented access to Pop Art legend Andy Warhol and his followers, in an attempt to penetrate behind the expressionless exterior of a man who was one of the most controversial figures of his generation. Using some of the techniques that Warhol himself pioneered, the film explores his paintings and films as a reflection of the spirit of America in the '60s, with candid discussions revolving around sexuality, Warhol's life at The Factory and his experience of being shot. Infamously banned by the Courts on the grounds that it was offensive and indecent, this verdict was later overturned and the programme finally transmitted. Offering a fascinating insight into one of the 20th Century's most influential cultural figures and directed by one of the most famous commercial photographers in the world, Warhol makes remarkable viewing.
