10"+CD. Shagrat Records is pleased to announce its first release since 2005's Chicken Legs Weaver live LP co-production with Ecstatic Yod, a 10" single by legendary 60s band Screw. Screw were a psychedelic blues quintet from south London whose chief claim to fame was their support spot at the Rolling Stones Hyde Park concert in July 1969. It was subsequently written up in Richard Neville's Play Power book. The group released no records during their brief heyday (1967-70) but Shagrat has unearthed its only two extant recordings! Recorded in May 1969 under the supervision of Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. With nods towards Captain Beefheart, the Misunderstood and Free, the band featured Chris Turner (harmonica), Al Kinnear (guitar), Nick Brotherwood (drums), Stan Scrivener (bass) and Pete Hossell (vocals), and they played many gigs at the time including the Roundhouse, Eel Pie Island and the London Guildhall. The 500-Only 10" comes in an intricate package all designed by Savage Pencil and includes a special fold over inner sleeve (featuring photos of their Hyde Park appearance and an extensive history of the band written by Shagrat boss Nigel Cross) plus a bonus CD of 'Psychedelic Harps', an lengthy, exciting blues harmonica dual between Chris Turner and Pete Hossell.

Many people watching the ebay auctions where surprised seeing this album selling for the past few month 3 times for nearly 3500 Euro each. Before that, this album was completely unknown. Captain Marryat are from Glasgow, Scotland and recorded this demo album in 1974, released in a tiny pressing on the Thor label, hopefully to get an EMI or Chrysalis deal. They wanted to record only a single but came up with a complete album of self-composed tracks. Since it was not that easy for a Scottish band to get attention down in London, this album was the only pressing ever done and sold at band gigs only. 5 musicians, great organ, vocals, extra heavy fuzz-guitar, drums and bass, amazing underground songs, influenced by Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Beggars Opera, a true lost classic. 0323832 LP TIMELAG 41 2090503238329 TIME-LAG	CORTES, LULA - ROSA DE SANGUE Deluxe first ever reissue of this Brazilian private press monster rarity. Originally custom pressed in 1980, 'Rosa De Sangue' is the closing chapter of the amazing Recife psychedelic movement that flourished & centered around the work of Lula Cortes, beginning in 1973 with the release of Satwa, and the creation of Abracadabra, Lula's loose art/music/design collective. Leading up to 1980 Lula had produced & privately released Satwa in 1973 (Brazil's first private press LP) as well as Marconi Notaro's 'No Sub Reino Dos Metazoarios' LP that same year (featuring the recording debut of Ze Ramalho). He then started the legendary but incredibly short lived Solar label, releasing only two albums: 1975's 'Paebiru' double album, and a year later the lone album by Flaviola. As if that wasn't enough, he was also heavily involved in other productions and performed on many seminal albums coming out of the region, including many collaborations with Alceu Valenca... By the close of the 70s the heavily utilized Rozemblit recording studio / pressing plant had been destroyed by repeated floods, Abracadabra had run its course, and along with Lula's marriage, the Solar label was no more. So 'Rosa De Sangue' was conceived as a bookend & tribute to this closing era; as Lula himself states "I want to close all of this with a golden key"...And a golden key it is. Entering a small local studio with a head full of songs and his freshly road tested mountains band, Lula created an album simply overflowing with ideas. Along with his power trio backing, he was further assisted by many old friends dropping in, including, among many others : Alceu Valenca, Flaviola, Ze De Flauta & Paulo Rafael. With hints of the past era and of things to come, it is a truly wild audio experience, covering many styles & moods. From crazed ethno folkrock, to magical, gentle, jungle folk psych zones, to hard hitting, coke dusted fuzz rock, to insane mutant disco dance floor groove, to tweaked Americana, to acid vocal raga trance, and way beyond...All throughout Lula's beautiful tricordio work pins things down, and for the first time he is the main vocalist (this is, after all, his first "solo" album!) His is a smoke & booze steeped voice darting between crazed abandon, deep sadness, and glowing soulful humor. When things are mellow, you could easily imagine youre hearing an outtake from Marconi Notaro or Paebiru, but the next moment you're dropped into a raging street party or dimly lit booze drenched bar scene vibe...Frenzied guitars all over, including some tough fuzz, as well as powerful rolling bass groove, soaring violin, moog weirdness, dusted backup vocals, and great drum kit / regional percussion interplay. Psychedelic at heart, but brimming with flashes of tropicalia, punk, prog, and pure hot blooded rock & roll...A bizarre & amazing album. but of course, the story doesn't end there...At some point while the album was being recorded & pressed Lula signed a major label contract which would produce 1981's far tamer 'O Gosto Novo Da Vida' LP. When his new label got wind of Rosa De Sangue's eminent release, they were displeased to say the least. As soon as the pressing was complete, the entire small edition was seized & destroyed, making this album by far Brazil's rarest. So rare, in fact, that even among the most hardcore Brazilian collectors the original LP is often only rumored to exist, often cited as unreleased...A few copies did however survive, and now, 29 years later, the world can finally hear this 'golden key' from a truly visionary artist...Packaged in a heavy vintage style cover with exact reproduction original artwork, including the huge full color, double sided, foldout poster insert, plus an extra insert featuring new liner notes from Lula Cortes as well as translated song titles. 180gm audiophile virgin vinyl pressing with exact repro label art. (wherefrom? whereto?) was recored in Turkey in 1979. The band was only known by a very small insider-group, but those fans just adored Hardal. The secret of Hardal's small popularity is that in 1979 the Turkish rock scene was comatose. Cem Karaca left to Germany, Erkin Koray moved to Canada, Edip Akbayram got stuck because of his political ambitions. Only Baris Manco was still on the road. To start a new band was tough times in Turkey. Hardal also recorded 2 later albums. The music is the best Turkish progressive underground you can think of. Filled with guitars, synth sounds, great eastern vibe vocals and harmonies, pumping rhythms, as good as the best Koray tracks for sure. Modulo 1000 is one of Brasils famous progressive-psych rock bands of the early 1970s, their only album became legendary in the collectors scene, as one of the best South American records of all times, besides Laghonia, Emiliano Zapata, Traffic Sound, Opus Alfa.. As Luiz Simas (organ) remembers: "The music of Modulo 1000 had its own appeal to an audience that wanted a heavy, raw, experimental, psychedelic sound. Our kind of music did not make it to the radio stations. It was too wild. The distribution of the record was done in a very limited way. The record label directors, which probably didn't understand or even didn't like our music, did zero promotion for it." Here we have a completely unknown album from England from 1971. Morning After recorded this LP as a demo only to acquire a record deal (as so many bands did in the late 60s early 70s). So the album was pressed only in tiny amounts. The recording was with home studio equipment. Some of the tracks on the album sound like Blues Rock from the late Fleetwood Mac and some have a more progressive touch such as Shuttah. Great & heavy guitar work, fuzz and wah-wah all over the album, snotty vocals, all own great compositions. The album title Blue Blood assumed a noble wealthy family and a member of the establishment, but the music and lyrics are just the opposite. Their record "Changes" from 1971 has now become cult in the collectors market. By the end of 1969 the band got a contact with the independant record company Spectator Records in Denmark and in the summer 1970 they recorded the only album, "Changes" in 2 days in the Spectator Record Studio. Finally the rarest and perhaps best album on the rare Danish Spectator label. The music is strongly influenced by the Cream and other hard Psychedelic guitar bands. It took us quiet a while to get a deal together and we are happy now to close the final chapter of the Spectator story with this great release of Moses. This release tells the story , musically, but also in extended linernotes, and rare photos (20p. booklet) the evolution of the band which was founded in the Summer of '69. Led by 16 year old Abel Zarate (Gtr & vocals) to become one of SF's hottest live acts in 1970 - a record deal with Bill Graham's Fillmore Records was in sight, but NL was too 'raw', and energetic to be reigned in and 'commercialized'. But now you hear it, remastered to a fresh dynamic sound from the original sesssion tapes. The trio from NL, Murray (trumpet), Spremich (drums), and Zarate took a huge part in helping to create the sound of Latin Rock group MALO, on their 1972 debut record, and helped that band become one of the premier Latin Rock groups of the era.... HERE ARE THEIR ROOTS! The sum of the music, and the intensity of these recordings can be compared to SANTANA'S Woodstock performance, with a bit of Hendrix-vibe, and Blood, Sweat & Tears influence. Truly a HIGHLIGHT of an almost forgotten San Franciso original. Sacros ('The Sacred') was a Chilean rock band inspired by the spiritual passion and veneration for the great gods of South America, such as Quetzalcoatl, the Plumed Serpent, god of the ancient Mayas and Viracocha, Lord of Tiahuanaku in the Andes mountains. Sacros recorded the debut LP on the state label IRT and the production was destroyed by the militaries. Only very few copies survived from destruction. The music goes in the same direction as Los Jaivas, Los Blops and El Congreso (all from Chile) and Lula Cortes from Brazil. It has a great 12 string Rickenbacker sounds, effects, great vocals and rhythms with an experimental touch. Some of the tracks suggest the boys may have indulged in too many psychedelic drugs. It's not for us to say. In 1968, John Lennon referred to Playback as one of his favorite albums. Fans of Friends era Beach Boys, Family Tree, the Smoke and the Millennium will really love this record even though it has more of a downbeat mood than the before mentioned sunshine pop classics. In the wake of the set's commercial failure Terry went solo, releasing three albums as a singer/songwriter, while John turned his attention to production, initially with Linda Ronstadt and became deeply involved in the formation of The Eagles. While there is to be heard some quite traditional folk with acoustic guitar and English lyrics on the LP front side, reminiscent maybe of the early Bob Dylan, the flip side already sounds far more psychedelic, with an abundant use of the flute. The male-female duet singing, all in English, is pleasing to the ear. In 1995, a bootleg CD of "Emtidi" (Germanofon 941057) was released in Luxemburg; it was copied from LP and made up cheaply. (wherefrom? whereto?) was recored in Turkey in 1979. The band was only known by a very small insider-group, but those fans just adored Hardal. The secret of Hardal's small popularity is that in 1979 the Turkish rock scene was comatose. Cem Karaca left to Germany, Erkin Koray moved to Canada, Edip Akbayram got stuck because of his political ambitions. Only Baris Manco was still on the road. To start a new band was tough times in Turkey. Hardal also recorded 2 later albums. The music is the best Turkish progressive underground you can think of. Filled with guitars, synth sounds, great eastern vibe vocals and harmonies, pumping rhythms, as good as the best Koray tracks for sure. 0322128 CD CD 146 4016342001465 GARDEN OF DELIG	IBLISS - SUPERNOVA Ibliss were founded in the Rhineland area in 1971. The band played instrumental progressive jazz-rock, heavy on percussions. With their sound they are comparable to Embryo, Brainstorm, Xhol, or Thirsty Moon. Two of the band's more known names are Andreas Hohmann and Basil Hammoudi. The former was on drums on Kraftwerk's first LP. The latter did the percussion on the only LP of Kraftwerk's predecessor Organisation. Ibliss released only one LP called "Supernova". It was recorded with Conny Plank in 1972, and then released in a small edition on Aamok, a sublabel of Spiegelei. In 2008 a bootleg version from Retro Disc International appeared on the market. This cheap sorry effort was supposed to come from Spain, like it was marked on the cover, but, in effect, is instead from Germany. Originally the band was hired by "Zig Zag Records" to record cover tunes and easy listening, with the intention, "Were just doing whatever we want," the result was an overdosed rock concept album. "to give the music back to the people". Original copies are rare and pretty unknown among psych collectors until now! The 7 songs with an average length of 7 mins combine different styles of music, from heavy garage rock to bluesy westcoast, drifting into various tripped-out, funk, jazz, fusion elements with humorous/social comments. The first half of the '60s was a perfect test ground for whoever wanted to make a record for a fistful of dollars. The 45 rpm was the king of the place and among the other genres of the day, instrumentals occupied a sizeable chunk of the production. The best-known instrumentals came from California in the late '50s, thanks to the surfers who quickly adopted this new guitar sound from Texas. Another compilation album in this series will be devoted to some of those artists. Simultaneously, all over the United States bands started recording lots of diverse and surprising instrumental tracks. They did so for various reasons: lack of a good singer, filler for a B side, a shot at the charts with a different, jukebox-ready mix of an already released song. This Heavy Jelly collection focuses on tunes mainly dominated by a sax and organ, and always backed by a strong rhythm section. These tracks were shamelessly designed to fill up the dance floor. The mark of a good instrumental was often a gimmick, i.e. that little something - a riff, an intro, a repetitive chord - that would act as the piece's signature item. Their unreleased recordings are must for fans of underground psych and prog sounds. They recorded for Mega Records, an RCA records subsidiary, and got signed to the label. However their success was cut short when Steve Stephen's father, who was co-owner of one of the biggest investment banks in the country, went to the label and bought Rayburn's recording contract out from under them in order to derail his son's music career. Over the next two years, the band recorded at Jaggars Studio in Little Rock and for Steve Cropper's TMI studio in Memphis, but the band's second chance at fame continued to elude them. In 1974, guitarist Jimmy Roberts' life was cut short when he developed cancer at the age of 21. Three years later in 1977, the band reunited to record more songs from their early 70s era that they never got a chance to record with Roberts. For the first time in over 30 years, Rayburn reunited for a live concert in their hometown of Little Rock, AR in July of 2009. With the help of the band member's musical children, the 2009 version of Rayburn was a tribute and reboot of the original group with the meeting of two generations to celebrate the music of the past. At the concert, their reel to reel demos from 1972-1977 were released on CD, featuring a full color 12 page book compiled and researched by Harold Ott. This was a supremely talented group that was gone too fast and held back from the world. With this second excavation of previously unreleased live BBC session performances spanning the period 1967 - 1971, Shapes And Sounds becomes a series and Volume Two features a completely different line up of bands from last years' set. Pride of place on this second edition arguably goes to the Gun, with three astonishing performances that were recorded nearly a year before "Race With The Devil" which illustrate their late 7 menu of mod and psych pop, with cracking versions of Rupert's Peoples "Hold On", Paul Simons "A Most Peculiar Man" and a quite splendid airing of their legendary "Light On The Wall"! The Casuals surprise with the beat of "Midnight Confessions" and "Take Me For A Little While" as well as a fine rendering of "Jesamine", whilst the Mirage perform a live version of their May 1967 single "The Wedding Of Ramona Blair". The Alan Bown play an excellent take of "Magic Handkerchief" and even more interestingly offer two numbers that never appeared on any Bown release, with the self penned progressive popper "Movie Star Baby" and a brilliant interpretation of the Association's "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies". Also with three tracks on Shapes And Sounds are Wales' Bystanders, who turn in a lovely version of "Royal Blue Summer Sunshine Day" as well as a glorious homage to the Byrds with "Renaissance Fair". Even better and long talked about in collectors circles but never previously released is their absolutely stunning rendition of "I Am The Walrus", which Top Sounds are sure will disappoint no-one! Sourced from an off air recording of their only British television appearance on Disco 2, Killing Floor perform "Milkman" from their Out Of Uranus LP in superb quality (the TV show was wiped decades ago) and of similarly heinous rarity are live tracks from Portrait and Katch 22, who turn in forceful renderings of "Born To Be Wild" and "The Price Of Lov" respectively (the latter of which is better than the Status Quo cover!) The sound quality is absolutely superb throughout, with twelve of the sixteen tracks sourced from original BBC Transcription records. The other performances have been taken from excellent off air recordings and similarly shine and though few of the tracks on the collection needed much enhancement at all, all have nevertheless been professionally restored and mastered. 0327206 CD TSCD 4 5051078913223 TOP SOUNDS	VARIOUS - SHAPES AND SOUNDS, VOL. 3 Top Sounds Records return once again with another collection of music recorded live for BBC radio and TV during the late 1960s and early 70s, with a significant proportion of wonderful material long thought lost. The compilation begins and ends with some most welcome performances from BILL FAY, documenting his appearance on the Disco 2 television show in early 1971. With the TV programme being wiped this is the only known evidence of Bill playing live, and he performs in superb audio quality 'Tell It Like It Is' and a song he never recorded anywhere else called 'After The Revolution'. Three tracks from THE PRETTY THINGS late 1968 session for Top Gear have been widely available for a while but the fourth, a version of 'Old Man Going', was never retained by the BBC - needless to say Top Sounds have located a master tape of the performance and are pleased to inform the Pretties' fans that its even better than the album version, with the fuzzed guitar cranked up to maximum! A double CD of DAVE DEE, DOZY, BEAKY, MICK and TICH's BBC sessions was released in 2008, but Shapes And Sounds Three adds to that considerable legacy with a better version of 'Frustration' and more spectacularly, the band's fantastic psychedelic rock assault on the First Edition's ust Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)'. Long time favourites with psych pop enthusiasts are THE END who have had much previously unreleased music released in the past, their BBC sessions however have always proved elusive as the BBC wiped their tapes. Rescued from off air recordings Top Sounds present two numbers from their 1968 'Top Gear', with an atmospheric rendering of 'Shades Of Orange' and a brilliant take of 'Under The Rainbow' which is wildly different from the studio version on the 'Introspection' album. Like The End, Geordie psychsters SKIP BIFFERTY have been well served by compilations - 'In The Morning' and 'Follow The Path Of The Stars' however now appear in pristine quality straight from transcription disc whilst 'On Love' and 'Yours For At Least 24' (from their first ever radio session) make their debut and were previously presumed lost. BBC material by CUPID'S INSPIRATION similarly emerges for the first time with a quite splendid mix of pop, blues and rock across four numbers, only one of which was ever released in their original discography. Especially noteworthy is a crunching take of 'Dream' and a frantic version of Garnet Mimms' 'As Long As I Have You'. GULLIVERS PEOPLE prove admirably they could deliver psych pop with an excellent performance of the Bee Gees' psych opus 'Horizontal' whilst 'On A Day Like This' improves on the single, then finally Plymouth group THE EARTH offer some rather good tunes with live versions of 'Everyone Sing The Song' and the prog rock favourite 'Resurrection City' from 1969. The music has all been professionally restored and mastered and the presentation is immaculate and as with the previous 'Shapes And Sounds' volumes, Artholeghraphics have designed a memorable period flavoured package. The CD has a twenty eight page colour booklet based on a vintage Radio Times magazine packed with illustrations, band histories and listings of all their known BBC sessions written and supplied by Nigel Lees, author of much of Record Collector magazine's 'The British Psychedelic Trip' series. Bar the appearance of some of the Skip Bifferty recordings which have previously appeared in off air quality, none of these performances have ever been commercially available and most have not been heard in public since the 60's. Fuel for igniting dance floors and parties: thats what Spanish Soul was during the second half of the sixties. It was an eruption that filled the locals of major cities and touristy spots with sweat, dance, diversion and recognition. Soul didnt explode in Spain until after 1965 (the first hit was The Four Tops, "Reach Out I'll Be There"). Soul was approachable and had playful-vindicating references (messages in favor of civil rights didnt fall on deaf ears in a country subjected to the Francoist Dictatorship) which made it an ideal style for all young audiences. But once they were adopted by Soul, other problems arose. The brass section is one example: it wasnt easy finding musicians who knew how to play the trumpet, saxophone or the trombone. Despite this fact, the tourist phenomenon contributed to a great number of foreign musicians establishing themselves in Spain, enriching the sound of many groups dedicated to Black music. With all these ingredients Soul in Spain was possible -and with good groups too. Hundreds of bands from all over the country added to the new music paradigm and many managed to record. Some became success stories of Spanish Pop, others were known in smaller realms and disappeared into obscurity. Now also on vinyl! "Female Blues Singers Rarities 1923-1930". If, out of these fourteen female singers recorded in the 1920's, some have managed to put food on the table for a while, none became famous or rich, and most remain completely unknown. What can be said about a singer whose entire work fits on a single-sided 78rpm record? (It makes me think of those antique authors of whom all we have are titles of work). What circumstances led to this recording? Who decided to do it? For whom was it intended? Why wasn't it followed by more recordings? Hypotheses get lost in places and times themselves forgotten. What remains are these miraculous voices. And us, here, finally able to listen to them, through hardships and deaths - these voices that have gone through these faraway eras that no one alive today has experienced. Let's not forget that most of these profoundly sincere or ferociously ironic blues were created during the dark years of the Great Depression. However, this selection does not constitute a theme-based anthology. We simply wanted to present a few little-known or forgotten female blues singers whose ambiguous leanings, double-entendres, and uncompromising crudeness had been censored by the propriety of these times ruled by sanctimonious prudishness and despicable segregation. Finally, we have focused on the darker, more personal trend, coarser and grittier than what was being performed in vaudevilles and medicine shows, a radically new form, or maybe an ancient one that had remained hidden from us for decades.
