When HoZac first heard the crudely innocent recordings of Brooklyn's newly formed GIRLS AT DAWN, it was hard to recall which sunk in first, the jangling and angelic pop hooks, or the interwoven and uniquely eerie Rosemary's Baby soundtrack-style backup vocals that accompany them. It really doesnt matter, as their songs have that special something that stick right out and make the hairs on all our collective necks stand straight up. Their debut 7-inch single, hauntingly self-produced, loaded with home recorded goodness, and played by three girls who effortlessly knock out great, simplistic and inescapable songs that swim around in your head and don't let go. Quite like the hypnotic, mythological sirens who lured ancient sea captains into pits of despair, these songs seem just pure enough, until it's too late to turn back and they've hooked you unforgivably.

The album includes a copy of the original insert of the album. "Congregacion was one of the legendary bands from the Chilean musical scene of the early 70s. In spite of not having been a popular band like Los Jaivas, Los Blops and Congreso, they deserve a position of privilege in the history of Chilean rock. The group was from Valparaiso and led by musician and poet Antonio Smith. They wrote lyrics with a significant political, philosophical and religious content, they were a real "celebration of life". Musically, they crafted ballads in an Andean style with ethnic atmospheres, we could say they made a kind of psychedelic folk with progressive leanings. It included a mixture of local musicians and two "foreigners". The German musicians were Reinhart Firchow (recorders, flutes, ocarina, stylophone, percussion, vocals), Lucas Lindholm (bass, bass fiddle, organ, piano), Dicky Tarrach (drums, percussion), Herb Geller (flutes, cor anglais, alto/soprano/tenor saxes, organ), the Irishman John O'Brien-Docker (guitars, organ, percussion, vocals, wind chimes) and Esther Daniels (vocals). As you can tell from the name of the band and one album title, their coming together was to make their instrumental interpretation of Aldous Huxley's novel - A Brave New World. Being almost entirely an instrumental band (apart from some occasional voices) they created a most unique sound which combined together successfully different styles such as folk, psychedelic rock and electronics. Their use of wind instruments (woodwinds), peculiar percussion patterns, flute, saxophones and a stylopohone gives their music a special otherworldly sound. A possible sound-alike would be Annexus Quam (in the psychedelic rock approach) and Between (in the ethereal, atmospheric sound). Sadly, after they released Impressions on Reading Aldous Huxley in 1972 and then dissolved. Eduardo Mateo, Jorge Trasante and this wonderful album, marginalized during the course of a dictatorship, resisted the dictators, and those who came afterwards. Those of you who have followed along with us while we chart a course through the rich musical heritage of Uruguay know full well, a military dictatorship took control of the country in the early 1970's, causing most well-known musicians to emigrate. The nation's most influential musician, enfant terrible iconoclast Eduardo Mateo, had no chance to do so. And yet it was during this dark period that Mateo reached his zenith as a composer and arranger in case of this album, with a lot of help from world famous Afro-folk percussionist Jorge Trasante. On 'Mateo y Trasante' (1976), Mateo's second post-El Kinto album, he goes further than ever before in his sonic explorations of different percussion variations and guitar techniques, evolving a more complex musical style. Even Mateo's voice underwent a relevant mutation for the album, which many people thought the result of a deep mental illness. (Trasante explains that Mateo was deeply influenced by Arabic music, and used the new modulations he discovered to get into different characters with his voice.) Many of Mateo's old fans and fellow musicians could not really connect with his new musical personality and this work went unnoticed. According to Mateo biographer Guilherme de Alencar Pinto, only around 343 copies of the album were sold; yet this record is now considered a legitimate work of art, and indisputable evidence of Mateo's genius. This Lion Productions edition comes with a 32-page booklet which contains abundant information on the making of the album, as told by Jorge Trasante, lyrics in English and in the original Spanish, historical background on the Uruguayan scene, a score of incredible photos, and a brief overview of the legendary Sondor label. Our sincere thanks to Enrique Abal Oli for allowing us to use his amazing photos, and to Daniel Figares for allowing us to translate text from his book Mateo y Trasante: Treinta A?os, 1976-2006, which is the source for all of Jorge Trasante's musings on this epochal album included in this reissue. The two leading musicians in the band were singer and guitarist Fran McKendree and violinist Michael Dreyfuss. "Spring Suite" was McKendree Spring's 5th album, and probably their best. The songwriting is more distinctive than on earlier albums, and the addition of Moog and piano to the sound made it more interesting and varied. The record seems to have a very loose concept about thoughts and feelings that people goes through in the time from winter to spring. It opens with the instrumental "Equinox" that is driven forward by acoustic guitar, electric wah-wah guitar and of course Dreyfuss' violin. "Winter" is a pleasant and cosy song with nice lyrics and harmonies. "I Was Born" is a lot more energetic and dramatic, but slows down in the middle where the Moog gives it an almost spacey feel. The most beautiful song on the album is probably the mellow "The Madman" where Dreyfuss plays with his fingers on the violin instead of the bow. "The Girl" is a laidback, folky ballad where the band lets their American roots shine through. The same goes for the catchy "Today's the Day" and "The Storm". And with each passing year there are an increasing number of folks who are convinced that their debut LP is worthy of those Mojo/VH1/Spin/ lists of the top 50 or 100 rock albums of all time. From the first pulsating, exuberant notes of the intro, the band knows what they want to say: kids get ready, gotta rock steady, because they 'Gotta Getta Record Out,' they are trying to 'Curry Your Favor,' they play the records, and maybe most of all, they want to be 'Big in Japan'! Swill Radio and they are both heavy smokers. The Tobacconists did a few shows across Europe in the Spring of 2009 and recorded studio versions of our live material which should be released as an LP by Tourettes Records at some point. We did other recordings as well and from them Frans put together this excellent single. Prometheus is a fire stealing liver eater with a truly astounding sonic palette. Dr. Perati's Laboratory has some dark secrets indeed and they are revealed here for the very first time. The infernal mechanism! Great cover by Jos Meeuw and a real 7" sleeve! Fantastic!!

0337206 CD CYCLE 23 CYCLIC LAW	ALLSEITS - HEL ALLSEITS is the solo project of the German instrumentalist Nina Kernicke known from her recent collaboration with German drone pioneers Troum of which Nina has also been a recent live member of and her work under her other alias, ALLSIDES. The album "Hel" describes the way into the underworld, the listener is guided through various stages on the journey down to Hel, the Norse mythological term for hell and also for the goddess Hel who is said to keep watch over the underworld. The journey begins at the foot of Yggdrasil, the world tree, under which the entry to Hel is hidden. We then ride the river Gjöll, that flows along the human world before it runs down to Hel. Gjöll is is spanned by the bridge Gjallarbrù which is guarded by Modgudr, a female giant, who decides who can pass the bridge. Leaving Gjallarbrù behind, the large dog Garm that sentinels the gate to Hel is waiting and at his side sits Fjalar, a rooster that will crow to signify the beginning of Ragnarok, the end of the world. After passing Fjalar Hel is finally reached. This allegoric tale is expressed diligently by Kernicke with the use of guitar, bass, drums and skillful sampling creating thick drony layers of deep and solemn emotions. "Euthanasie in Hadamar 1941-1945". 60 pages book+CD. Between 1941 and 1945 the national socialists killed ten thousands of so-called 'mentally ill and retarded' people within their 'euthanasia' program. For this purpose they built special killing institutions where selected people were brought and murdered. Among the victims were also people with bomb and battle trauma. The biggest of these institutions was located at the idyllic Hessian Hadamar. The building is nearly untouched and is kept as a reminder of one of the darkest chapters of German history. The multi-media-art-project 'Stille||Silence' by German photo artist Birthe Klementowski and German soundartist Vortex will document these incidents in an audio-visual way. The carefully composed images shows what is still present from the killing institution at Hadamar, some information is added in English and German. The musical composition transposes these aspects and atmospheres into a complex 50 minutes electro-acoustic composition, featuring manipulated piano and violin sounds as well as field recordings. An introductory essay is provided by the head of the Hadamar monument (German). Photo artist Birthe Klementowski has so far created several album- and magazine-covers and was celebrated in Konkursbuch 47: Der erotische Blick (2008) and the cultural magazine :Ikonen:. In 1988, two British soul enthusiasts were sitting in Hamilton's house listening through a stack of old reels. One track in particular caught their ear. In fact they were floored with the discovery of hearing Little Ann's What Should I Do blasting from the speakers. Even though it played slower, the song was familiar to them as the mysterious Rose Valentine fictitious cover up spin from Wigan Casino's northern soul all nighters in the UK. Leading from the front comes Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa, the first new studio album in 15 years from the seminal spiritual roots collective African Head Charge. With interest in AHC given renewed life by the recent re-issue of their classic 1991 album Songs Of Praise, new fans and the groups legion of dedicated followers alike will be eager to submerge themselves in this latest deep collection, produced entirely with Adrian Sherwood at the controls. Without doubt, their patience will be rewarded, the passage of time having caused no dimming of the light in Bonjos truly mesmerising and booming vision. AHC leader and chief protagonist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah was born and raised in a Rasta community in the Jamaican hills, and after many years of international travel, in the mid-90s he followed the Rasta dream and relocated to Africa, making his home in Ghana. Returning to London to rehearse for some live shows with Asian Dub Foundation, he teamed up again with longtime collaborator Adrian Sherwood, and Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa is the remarkable result. Originally inspired by a comment made by Brian Eno in a 1981 interview discussing My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, this album is African Head Charge at their very best, rich in varied percussion and spritual chants, set over hypnotic and transcendent layers of African rhythms, trippy and bubbling dubbed-out effects, and trademark pounding bass. Pioneering singer / banjo player Dock Boggs (b. 1898) got his start playing (while working) in the coal mines all over the poverty-stricken Appalachian region. His earliest recordings, a blend Appalachian old-time music and early blues, come from 1927-1929. During this time Boggs was fairly popular and able to make a living with his music, much to the dismay of his wife who, like many others at the time, considered secular music a sin. By 1930, however, the Great Depression had forced Boggs to pawn his banjo and go back to selling moonshine and working in the coal mines. This would have been the end of Boggs' career had he thankfully not been rediscovered by folk revivalist Mike Seeger in the 1960s and subsequently recorded some great records for Smithsonian Folkways. This record is comprised of some extremely rare alternate takes (recorded between 1927-1929) of some of his greatest songs. Tracks - Side A: 1. Lost Love Blues (alternate take #1) 2. One of the earliest figures in American music, Charley Patton is not only often credited with being the father of the Delta Blues, but perhaps equally importantly was one of the first true "rock stars" of American music. Not that he played rock music (according to musicologist Robert Palmer, he played "deep blues, white hillbilly songs, nineteenth-century ballads, and other varieties of black and white country dance music"), but he acted like a modern rock star: flashy clothes, flashy stage performances, virtuoso guitar playing, and a "live fast / die young" lifestyle. The tracks found here feature another giant of the Delta blues: Willie Brown. Although Willie Brown was an accomplished vocalist and his guitar playing was second to none, Brown was perhaps best known as a sideman (and for his seminal "Make Me A Pallet On The Floor"), accompanying Robert Johnson, Son House and, as heard here, Charley Patton. He appeared on many of Patton's sessions recorded between 1930-1934 and his amazing guitar playing can be heard here on "Moon Going Down", "Some Summer Day", as well as on his own "Dry Well Blues". Much of the material recorded here was recorded in 1934 in NYC, just months before his death. "Hang It On The Wall" and "Poor Me", recorded in February, were the last songs he ever recorded. This is pure T Model, with some newer young musician friends playing along with him. It is also the only acoustic album T has ever recorded and it's a blast. "I don't have a care in the world," T-Model would remark occasionally. He'd back it up by taking time in the studio to sip Jack Daniels from his flask and tell "blue" stories or tales of his life's hardships to his new set of listeners. Each year, on the Sunday prior to Mardi Gras, a rag tag group of musicians assembles to provide the soundtrack for the progression of the parade of the Krewe of Eris. This past parade, a food based banquet, the sounds of this 62 piece band was captured on cassette and two microphones towering overhead. Brass and percussion working through seven originals and a cover through the streets of New Orleans, with accompaniment of paraders, bottles, sirens, and food. Field recording that sounds just like it sounded. A pressing of 1,000 with an insert and silk screened covers. And then they ate cake...On Domino Sound via Mississippi.
