They cover the full length and breadth of the `stoner` spectrum, from the mid-tempo power grooves, to the slow and low heavy riffing, to the darker psychedelic passages, and they often do it succinctly within the context of a single song. Bands like Witchcraft, Burning Saviours, Graveyard, and Witch all pulled this off and raised the bar considerably from the first notes of their first albums, and now you can add Green and Wood to that illustrious list. 0336965 LP ASHLP 3026 5051125302628 PHOENIX	SPEED, GLUE & SHINKI - EVE Ex-Foodbrain guitarist Shinki Chen, bass player Masayayoshi Kabe (also know as M Glue) and Phillipino Vietnam war veteran Joey Pepe Smith, who doubled as both the trios drummer and vocalist, released two legendary albums in the early 70s. Eve, the earlier of the bands two efforts, was probably the bands only "real" recording as the self-titled 2nd release in 1972 was put together by Smith from studio outtakes of Chens guitar playing and tracks omitted from Eve. Eve is a bluesy, psychedelic album, with Chens Hendrix-style guitar playing firmly underpinned by Smiths insistent percussion style modelled on the playing of his idol, Ginger Baker. The band dissolved immediately after the release of Eve as the other two members found Smiths drug-fuelled lifestyle (he was a huge fan of amphetamines and diligently applied himself to establishing a prodigeous habit) decidedly unappealing. Chen decided he didnt want to record again, and became a successful live artist, Joey went back to the Philippines and started the power trio Juan de la Cruz Band, and Masayoshi Kabe would win fame with the band Pink Cloud. Back in the early 70s a curious group owned and operated a health food restaurant in Los Angles. The Source Family was a religious group of young people centered around the father figure of Father Yod, a WWII flying ace and spiritual searcher. This group of young people also performed improvisational music backing Father Yod under the name Yahowa 13. When Father Yod died in a hang gliding accident in 1975, the group dispersed. In 2007, with the publishing of a book about the Source Family, the original Yahowa 13 reunited for some shows and did some studio recordings. These are the long awaited results, the first studio recordings in over 30 years by Ya Ho Wa 13! Original members Djin, Octavius and Sunflower jam out like the ensuing years never happened. Incredible improv pieces with mind melting guitar and the psychedelic low end throb that all Yod fans will immediately recognize. Literally, the best reunion album of all time! AERA founded in 1972 by "Ihre Kinder" guitarist Muck Groh and 2066 & Then keyboard player Steve Robinson were in their very beginnings, when they recorded their special extended version (26 minutes) "Mechelwind Suite" of their later classic title "Mechelwind" (on album "Hand und Fuss", LHC 44, vinyl-edition). The Mechelwind Suite is divided into 5 parts and is rather different from the later album-version, not only because of Steve Robinsons excellent keyboard playing but also because of Muck Grohs fine guitar playing and Klaus Kreuzeders pleasant sax tunes. CD 1 finishes with two SWF-recordings "Hodibbel" and "Mechelwind" from Oktober 1973 again with 2066 & Then keyboarder Steve Robinson. Your typical 60's teenage ups & downs Boy/Girl song themes. Being mastered from old records, you'll definitely get that Pebbles lo-fidelity sound on this CD. The moody ballad, 'Please Don't Go' is pretty good and alternates its' slow/fast tempos back & forth well. The title track appears twice here, first as the band's only A-Side released single and secondly, as a similar sounding abet, a slightly slower early first version. Both are very typical but, very likeable 1965 Garage. It's B-side, Dylan's 'Like A Rolling Stone' (and featured on Pebbles Volume 1) is given the Farfisa driven treatment with upbeat harmony vocals working very well as a Garage tune. 'Satellite' is a pleasant sounding 'Telstar' like instrumental which, reminded me of music you would've heard played in a 60's roller rink. 'You can't have my woman' their first demo from late 1964 is an atypical mid-tempo Garage rocker yet, features more guitar than their later Farfisa lead stuff. 0337137 7" SING 11 SING SING	HILL, JEFF -BAND- - SOMETHING'S WRONG WITH MY BABY Immediately after the release of the Chiswick single, JEFF HILL recruited drummer DAVE BUCKLEY (ex-MOONSHINE, who recorded a 1976 EP titled Too Young To Love Me) and bass player RAY HUMPHRIES, and played their first gig in Burtonwood on October 19. A few demos were taped in Warrington on November 26, two days before entering London's Pathway Studios to record a second 7-inch for Chiswick, which never saw the light of day. In the second half of 1978 a deal with Rabid Records was negotiated and two tracks were taped at Cheshire's Revolution Studio on February 19, 1979, with STEVE HOPKINS as guest musician and ANDY MAC taking production duties. Rabid planned the release of a single then decided to include the two tracks on a compilation album: both projects were eventually aborted. Undeterred, the Jeff Hill Band decided to found their own label, Balloon Records, and self-financed the pressing of 500 copies of a 7-inch housed in a cartoon picture cover with a Ramonesy drawing of Jeff wearing a 'gabba gabba hey' badge. The record emerged on December 20, 1979, and is worth tracking down, though it is quite hard to locate: its two Punk/Powerpop songs are enjoyable efforts with the A-side "Something's Wrong With My Baby" arguably being the better track. 0337140 7" SING 10 SING SING	ORBITS - MAKE THE RULES Formed in Milwaukee, THE ORBITS were a mod/powerpop three-piece band whose outstanding "Make The Rules" can be heard on the second volume of Powerpearls. Old bandmate (and also SHIVVERS drummer) JIM RICHARDSON once qualified the combo as "Brian Jones on speed fronting The Jam." In fact, the trio was typical of the US vintage late '70s power-pop sound, as they were true garage activists drawing from the '60s legacy much more subtly than their UK contemporaries. Juvenile, disarming, devoid of all pretense or anything. Released on the tiny label No.1, "Make The Rules" backed with smashing "Phenomenal World" were in the bins in 1980. The Orbits sound was tight like a strong black coffee (or its chemical equivalent) but enriched with a lot of pop artifacts (clear vocals, handclaps, peals of guitar riffs, "lalala-la" background vocals). The recordings of the 24 Electromagnetic Walks in Poitiers were made on August 14, 18 and 19 2008, using only Christina Kubisch's electromagnetic induction headphones and a portable recorder. The sounds have not been electronically modified. The only intervention was the use of a frequency filter. (...) Since putting an excerpt of this in the Vital Weekly podcast, I have to transfer it to my computer and normalized (meaning make it zero DB) and noticed there is also actually music in there. Odd, why should it be so incredibly silent? If you would turn up your volume all the way up in those parts (three minutes at the beginning and five at the end) it would mean ripping your speakers apart in the middle part, when things become so much louder. A Lopezian take on dynamics, perhaps? Since this was recorded for a radio broadcast I am pretty sure these minutes were not broadcasted. Novi Sad from Greece is the youngest 'star' on the scene of microsonic, field recording and laptop artists, with a considerable profile, playing for instance the Gaudemus music week here in The Netherlands (who hardly invite would invite a like minded Dutch artist I'd say) and works for Touch. And quite rightly so: what Novi Sad does, might not be entirely new (but then: who does?), but what he does he does with some excellence. Following his silent intro, there is an outburst of sea wave like noise sound for a while, which forms the absolute counterpoint of the silent intro. The middle part - of the part that actually can be heard - is a sort of organ like drone piece and in the closing part, the organ and the seaside meet up and make a brutal return of cascading sound. Before we leap into silence again, the organ makes the final fade out. Its microsonic in that respect that the changes in this piece are as minimal as they come, whereas the sound has a maximum output - when there is something to be heard of course. In that respect Novi Sad is not microsound at all: the music is loud and abrasive. A really great work, which brings a lot of delight here. The Oda Relicta project, hailing from the Ukrainian city Zhytomyr, was created by Olegh Kolyada, a musician known by his electronic experiments since 1998, mainly due to his projects First Human Ferro, Ostarbeiter, and In Meditarivm. Oda Relicta was created in 2005 with the intention to represent the legacy of the local military orchestra - Zhytomyr Military Brass Orchestra, where Olegh Kolyada's uncle was involved into while serving in the army. Hence the military component of the project is the marches, and improvisations upon classical works performed throughout 1990s-2005 by the local orchestra mentioned. In the year 2006 Oda Relicta came into an agreement with the Belgian indie-label Neuropa Records for the debut's "The Crown & the Plough" production, being issued a year later. In 2006 Olegh Kolyada got in touch with the Ukrainian contemporary classical composer Mykhayil A. Shukh, whose priceless legacy became the neo-classical/liturgical component of the project. In early 2008 Neuropa Records released the second Oda Relicta's album "Czarstvo dukha" ("The Kingdom of Spirit"), which highlighted the deep religious creed and background of the project, Christianity. Oda Relicta was assisted on that record by an Italian band Albireon, and the French ones, Dissonant Elephant and Lonsai Maikov to perform a spiritual lithurgy heavenly enriched by a professional soprano singing. This is a master piece, very intense, atmospheric and deep, a work and sound unique and very personal.
